Béarnaise transports the flavors of Paris to Capitol Hill. Located at 3rd and Pennsylvania Ave. Southeast, Béarnaise serves bistro fare in a humble, but chic, atmosphere describes as "A French Revelation" by The Washington Post.

Inspired by their childhood memories in Montreal and years of training and living around France Chef Spike Mendelsohn and his sister, Micheline Mendelsohn Luhn, opened the bistro to rave reviews.

In the lively dining room, guests dine on classic French dishes with a twist in comfty leather booths surrounded by antique mirrors and vibrant original artwork from Parisian galleries.   • "I purchased a voucher from LivingSocial for brunch for two and it was marvelous! I took my BFF who is a frequent diner there, but had never done their brunch. The mimosas were terrific and the hollandaise sauce was the best she and I had ever had. Perfectly poached eggs, too. The only downside was the noise level. It was very high. However, I would not let this stop me from going back for brunch again! It was a delightful time with excellent food and service."

  • "Went with a group of 5 friends for brunch Sunday afternoon-had one of the best meals I've enjoyed in some time. The steak and eggs are outstanding! And our waiter was from Normandy, and a lot of fun. Everyone ordered different items, and commented that they really liked their meals. The baked goods are FRESH and HOT, as well as delicious!"

  • "I love Bearnaise - the first time I went I was absolutely blown away by the service. However this last time I was really disappointed. Not only did we wait for 10-15 minutes for our drinks to arrive, our server was so disinterested in us he would walk away before I could ask for anything. He was slow, not particularly friendly, and all and all just didn't seem like he wanted to be there. It was really disappointing for such a yummy restaurant!"

  • "We had a 9:15pm reservation on Saturday however we decided to go much earlier and see if they had room. The host was nice and was able to move our reservation to 6:30 which was significantly early but the place was empty. Online it showed tables were all booked however even when we left before 8pm they were maybe 75% full. The French Onion soup (even in August) was well worth it. Couldn't have tasted better, stock was perfect and the flavor was just right. I had the Mussels and my finance had the Steak Frits.. Nice to know the Mussles came with re-fills on the fries.. Overall a great dinner.."

  • "I went to Bearnaise with my friend during restaurant week- we started with a delicious baby greens salad, then had mussels in a sauce that was so good I wanted to take a bath in it. I seriously could have just had a piping hot mug of sauce and been happy as a queen. The french fries served with them were also delectable. Finally, we can a pastry sliced in half with homemade vanilla ice cream and --- get this--- homemade chocolate sauce. This sauce wasn't too sweet was was chocolaty enough to taste like sweet sin. Believe me, I will be back."

  • "The food might be good, but who cares. We have waited for over an hour here and still no food. This is completely ridiculous. Same for like literally everyone here. How difficult is it to make a French toast and a steak? When we arrived every waiter ignored us. No water, no drinks, nobody cared to take our order. Finally a waiter came by, clearly bothered by the presence of any guest. This is one of the worst service experience we have ever had. Period. Anywhere in the world. Spike - this is an embarrassment for you. I wish I could give 0 stars."

  • "Food, service, and ambiance were all wonderful. We enjoyed every aspect of our brunch. The food was cooked to perfection, flavorful and very fresh. Our server was attentive to our requests and always kept an eye out to refill our mugs. The place looked busy, but was not uncomfortable. The noise level was acceptable, considering the busy hour. Will definitely return here!"

  • "I arrived after my husband, and we moved from one table to another (patio was empty.) Waiter Alex barely hid his frustration (though nothing but a glass of water had been brought to the table.) We used a voucher, and since we had already ordered Montreal Caesars, we asked to sub the Caesars for the mimosas...they are exactly the same price on the menu. Flat out "no", and when I asked if I could see a manager, we got rolling eyes and heavy sighs out of Alex. The manager did damage control nicely, and we loved the food and our new waiter. And we noticed that after that, Alex's demeanor became a whole lot friendlier to the other diners who were on the patio by that time. We will be back for the food."

  • "The food we got was delicious. However we had to send the chicken back to get it cooked all the way through. When it first arrived it was pink, cold, and clearly not cooked through in the center. After it was cooked it was delicious both at the restaurant and again the next day as leftovers."

  • "This was a first trip to Bearnaise for me. We were there during Washington's restaurant week, but chose not to do the special. The restaurant feels like a bistro should feel -- tables close enough, but not too close, and noise-level somewhere between moderate and energetic. The Vietnamese mussels were outrageously good, and all of us ordered steak and frittes, which comes with choices of sauces. My wine reduction sauce was fine, but really nothing too special. Fries were great! OK selection of wines by the glass. Service was excellent. One of our party was 45 minutes late, staff didn't seem to get annoyed and we never felt rushed. Fun area and the pizza place and diner next door were hopping. I'll definitely go back."

  • "Great location, plenty of space, good sidewalk seating, & beautiful. Good range of menu options & the wine list. Staff could use a smile - it seemed to pain them to be friendly. We had to ask for everything. 2 people at a time carry only 2 plates each - why they don't have staff carry more, or give them trays so they won't have to make 6 trips is beyond me. Food is hit or miss - the cucumber gazpacho & profiteroles are delicious. Crème Brule is boring - chocolate chips strewn on top. Chicken paillard w/Dijon sauce & frites is 2 breasts pounded out & grilled with dark grill lines with a greenish oil over it - is overcooked & dry, oily, needed salt. Sauce is bland, tastes nothing like mustard, & I would classify as more of a hollandaise."

  • "I thought the poor service was due to the TZ deal, but having read through these reviews I am seeing that it may be the plight of Bearnaise itself. Our server barely said 10 words to us for the 90 minutes we were there. He was rude and never once asked us if we wanted refills on our drinks or if we were doing ok with the food. We were given no service. Every single thing that was brought to our table was asked for by us specifically. He even walked by at one point after bringing the check he took our mimosa glasses without saying a word. Eventually another waiter came by and asked if we wanted more and indeed brought us more drinks. This place is a huge waste of time and money. We couldn't be paid to go back."

  • "This was our first visit to Bearnaise. We arrived on time for our 10:30AM brunch reservation. We were seated promptly and given very prompt attention from our waitor, Marcello. We used a certificate from TravelZoo which included a bread basket, entree and endless mimosas or bloody marys. The bread basket was very good; our favorite was the coconut topped coffee cake. We ordered mimosas all around and they kept coming as advertised. They seemed to be a bit heavy on the orange or grapefruit juice and light on the the sparkling wine, but they tasted good. Our brunch entrees arrived shortly after the bread basket emptied, perfectly timed really. I ordered the croque madame with frites and my wife had the steak and egg with frites. It was good."

  • "This was my fourth time at the restaurant and each succeeding time has been a little less impressive. I'll be taking a break for a while, at least. The food didn't have a lot of taste, the steak I had was wrongly prepared to order and not much better when re-done. The cocktail which promised to contain a number of different ingredients tasted pretty much like whiskey on the rocks. I love the atmosphere and the waiters and want to like this place more."

  • "The food was very good, although my husband's and my steaks got mixed up (his was au poivre which was very spicy) Brussell sprouts-amazing!! We used a Groupon which was a good value. The only down side is I told them in the online reservation that we were celebrating anniversaries and again when I left message to confirm. I said it again when we checked in asked specifically about the "Locks of Love" trellis they have. At no time did anyone wish us a special day, offer us anything or make it special in any way. We still had a lovely time and did put our lock on the trellis. It would have been so much nicer if the restaurant had done a little to make it special for us."

  • "Best tartar in DC. The duck confit was outstanding, as was the chicken. We loved the profiteroles. Our server, Xavier, was personable, helpful and knowledgeable with the wine list. Wish we could have tried the corn soup and the vietnamese mussels, but we just couldn't eat all that food--guess we'll just have to return! We really enjoyed our night here. Also have heard that brunch is good--will have to try that as well."

  • "My boyfriend and I went to Bearnaise to have Saturday brunch. While the place was maybe 3/4 full, it was not slammed. Nevertheless we waited over 10 minutes after being seated for our coffee and our mimosas--both of which we ordered immediately upon sitting down, and were staples of the brunch service that were clearly mixed up and ready to be poured. The food itself (French ham bennie for me, spinach bennie for him) and the bakery basket was very good, but the service remained inattentive. We had to make a point to flag down our server numerous times for our coffee and mimosa refills (unlimited refills came with the meal.) I'll definitely give them another try, but it did make the experience less than we'd hoped for."

The salmon was too undercooked for my taste (others may like it) and not very creative. The frites are great, but is that a reason to go to dinner here?"

  • "Bearnaise was very charming. My husband and I were able to carry on a conversation and we found the ambiance to be quite relaxing. I especially appreciated the soft and flattering lighting. The french onion soup was authentic and delicious. I had the flat iron steak with au poivre sauce and the steak frites, both delicious. My husband had the special, which was wild sockeye salmon over a bed of lentils and greens; it too was cooked to perfection. The waiter was wonderful and guided us in our choice of a bottle of Malbec. We did not have room for dessert, but they had creme brulee....next time! What a wonderful choice for a long overdue date night!"

  • "Bearnaise is great at appearances: the front patio looks straight out of Paris, the food looks delicious and the waiters even speak french. If this is enough to attract you, stop read. However, this atmosphere is just a mask for bad service and exceedingly mediocre food. For the bottomless brunch, drinks came out slow and were of inconsistent quality (warm mimosas, bloodies either exceptionally bland or saturated with horseradish). I'm not sure if this is typical, but it seemed like only one waiter was assigned to the entire top floor. There seems to be a D.C. wide shift (at least in the "trendy" areas) of emphasizing looks at the expense of quality, to which Bernaise is unfortunately not an exception. P.S. stay away from the French toast."

  • "This was a brunch special. The food was very good. The 'unlimited' drinks (bloody marys or mimosas) were good, but noticeably on the weak side. Neither the ambience nor the restaurant location were anything special (located on Pennsylvania Avenue SE, several blocks from Eastern Market). Our waiter, a GW graduate named Joe was super nice but, unfortunately, will be off to Penn State for a graduate program in the Fall."

  • "Met up with a friend for a nice Sunday Brunch to take advantage of an online deal. All of the food was delicious! I could probably eat those blueberry muffins all day (too bad the bakery baskest only one comes with one). I had a Bloody Mary, it was a little on the spicy-side so "Bottomless Bloody Marys" could be a bit much for some. I can't wait to come back and try out the lunch/dinner dishes!"

  • "Their brunch is very welcome in an area with quite a few boring options. Everything is reasonably priced, including bottomless drinks. The bread basket was warm and delicious. The hangover hash was outstanding. And our excellent server pronounced "croissant" with just the right balance of sincerity and French-restaurant snobbery that it actually added to the occasion. I'll definitely be coming back."
