A word from BayWolf
Since 1975, BayWolf has been Oakland's favorite neighborhood restaurant, consistently delivering vibrant, world-class food in a Victorian home made modern with its popular terrace and eclectic dining rooms on Piedmont Avenue. BayWolf has several options for those looking to celebrate or meet with large groups of friends or business associates. The dinner menu changes monthly, always featuring the abundant locally-grown seasonal produce of Northern California and utilizing the culinary traditions of the Mediterranean. Additionally, the menu always showcases duck, raised especially for us by Liberty Ranch in Sonoma County. BayWolf remains a home away from home for all lovers of food, art, wine, friends and most of all family, which is who we consider everyone dining with us to be.Continued

  • "Springtime in Paris menu - they've perfected duck confit"

  • "We tried BayWolf again after a very disappointing dinner a while back. So glad we did!! The food was back to the standards that we enjoy and was delicious and beautifully presented. We tried the Sunday night prix-fix dinner and it was great. Highly recommended! We will definitely return to try other dishes. Prices were moderate for the quality and wine prices were reasonable. Give it a try!!"

  • "Had dinner with friends. Portions are great. Everybody cleaned the plates. Food was cooked great (and we had some picky eaters at our table). Food flavors were really crisp and clean. No fru-fru plates trying to be something overly complicated. Noise level was just perfect. You could have a wonderful dinner conversation without having to raise your voice above the music a lot of places pipe in to hype up the energy. Highly recommend for a night out where you just want to have a good meal and remember the dinner experience."

  • "Loved this place... everything we try is just phenomenal!! The service is always professional and attentive. Too bad we ate too much and didn't leave room for desert."

  • "This was my second time at Bay Wolf. I went with my fiancée and her mother. We had a very pleasant table on their enclosed, temperature-controlled patio. The sausage, ham, sauerkraut, and mustard appetizer was bursting with flavor. The duck confit and coq au vin were expertly prepared. The vegetables were buttery and delicious, and the chocolate cake had the most extraordinary texture: fudgy and moist yet light; it melted in the mouth. Definitely go to Bay Wolf."

  • "Steady and good. Not great, and I was surprised to find a spring menu with (the restaurant's signature proteain) confit duck leg instead of breast. Only the leg, not both, as I have been served in less venerable restaurants recently. But everything was nice, and the 30 year old place did not disappoint. Service attentive and friendly, seated very quickly with reservation. very satisfying."

  • "Always reliable. The duck is fantastic. The wine list is a bit limited but adequate. A little pricey but worth it."

  • "We never have a bad experience at Bay Wolf. We took some friends from out-of-state to dinner there recently and we all had wonderful meals, great service and a very lovely evening."

  • "Service and ambiance were lovely. Food was mediocre: no Lillet, no Prosecco, and the duck was dry..."

  • "As usual Bay Wolf is a terrific, all around great place for a nice meal. Not cheap, but no bank mortgages required either."

  • "This is such a long time favorite. Not terribly progressive on the food side but always good and not as expensive as it used to be. Well, technically, everything else has come up and BayWolf has stayed consistent on the food side. The buss gal recommended the BBQ calamari as a started and it was great. Tender and full of flavor. I always get the buss"boy" to throw in a recommendation and it is almost always a winner. They have no real skin in the game and tend to note what they would like to have."

  • "Some of the dishes don't work. the jambalyla wasn't like any I'd eve had before and large pieces of the ingredients left an unblended combination. Okra cut lenght-wise and fried, made no sense and added to an overly fatty dish. I regretted the choice. I'll probably go again, but hope that there won't be dishes that the chef is experimenting with. That shouldn't have been one of the experiments."

  • "We have been dining at Bay Wolf for many years and have never been disappointed. In my opinion they have the best caesar salad in The Bay Area. The overall quality of the restaurant just stays consistent."

  • "Everything at Baywolf is in good taste: The setting, the service, and especially the food. We were six for dinner. We sampled many of the menu items and were very pleased. And we could have a conversation."

  • "Orver many years I've died at Bay Wolf. It had been one of the best restaurants n the Bay Area.. Last night the food was fair but not really good. Vegetables were wilted and flavorless and duck leg was too dry. Service was OK, nothing special. This is now a mediocre bistro. Our previous experience was similar so we won't be going back."

  • "We both enjoyed the very good Celery Root soup. My wife had the rockfish & I had the Chicken & Andouille sausage gumbo. Both were very nice and we finished them with a very nice creme broulee. The highlight for me was the waiter taking my wine order and suggesting I order an Italian (Siciliam actually) wine instead because if fit our meals better. I was surprised because he was so certain and expecially because the wine was about $30 cheaper than what I was ordering. It turned out he was right on the money. As for the noisy neighbor, there were 2 older gals 2 tables over from us and the one kept going on & on about water & hay being shipped abroad. She was loud & distracting. Just a distraction that I wish we'd not had to deal with."

  • "This is our favorite restaurant in the Bay Area. We come for all our special occasions and then invent new ones. There are always wonderful choices, especially the fish, everything seasonal and healthy. Very imaginative combinations of flavors, textures; everything balanced and delicious. We have our favorite waiter, John, whom we consider a friend; we've been coming for 25 years and couldn't be happier with everything."

  • "We ate outside and I had asked for a quiet table. Perfect all around I could hear our conversations, without straining. The potato gnocchi was to-die-for.! Chardonnay was one of the best I have sipped. Table servers were beyond words of praise:) My guests were please and I have not been to Bay Wolk since 1995. Surpassed itself in all respects. Enjoyed the smaller portions also!"

  • "I've been going to Bay Wolf for decades and it continues to be one of the best dining experiences around. In very few other places can you get a relaxing, romantic dinner and also get food of such quality. Duck is the specialty here, but make sure to order calamari if it's on the menu (you'll never want the fried stuff again). The freshness and elegant preparation of the dishes shines through, and the prices are reasonable given the quality. Service is friendly and unobtrusive. We like to sit on the enclosed terrace, comfortable even in Winter. And make sure to check out the art in the inside dining rooms; these are not decorations, but real art by prominent Bay Area artists like Hung Liu and Rupert Garcia (to name only two)."

  • "We hadn't been to Bay Wolf for several years. We were surprised at how exceptional the food was, from the appetizers through the dessert. Duck flan may have been the best pate I've ever had. Excellent grilled calamari. My rockfish was cooked to perfection. Wife's duck was good but not as exceptional as the other dishes. Chcolate cake for dessert was sublime. Very positive experience."

  • "We were first introduced to BayWolf by our son. We so enjoyed the meal and service we travel from the South Bay and make BayWolf a destination for a great meal out. I had the marinated squid and my husband had the short ribs. Both were fantastic and we were both using our bread to wipe up the amazing sauce as well. We will return remembering such great food and fantastic service."

  • "The whole dinning experience was wonderful. We were seated promptly upon our arrival. The wait staff is experienced and knowledgeable about the food and wines at the restaurant. Our food was delicious! This was my third time eating at this restaurant in the last 12 months. I highly recommend BayWolf for any special occasion dinning. Their monthly menu is posted on their website. It is a great place to enjoy a special evening!"

  • "Bay Wolf is an East Bay institution, and deservedly so. The food is always creative and delicious. For our special night out, we reviewed the menus online for all the top area restaurants where we knew we could hear each other speak, from Boulevard to Chez Panisse to Pican and many others. We came back to this stalwart and were greatly pleased with our choice--again. Kudos."

  • "BayWolf was described to me as a fine restaurant that serves quality if somewhat reserved and traditional food to a middle-aged to of-a-certain-age clientele. Yup. This isn't a negative. Just cuz there was no rosehip foam and scorched lichen doesn't mean our duck and beef cheeks and endive salad wasn't tasty and the evening relaxing and pleasant."

  • "We arrived 5 mins early for our 8:15pm reservation the day after Valentine's Day; ended up waiting for almost 25 mins past 8:15pm. Hostess mentioned while we were waiting that they would pour some wine for us at the bar to thank us for waiting. This did not happen. Ordered starters, artichoke soup, a salad, and a duck liver flan. Artichoke soup was mediocre, duck liver flan was excellent. However, very confused by the salad, which was described as endives and beets, with blue cheese and blood oranges, but the salad came out looking like it was foraged from a camp ground. We dubbed it the "everything" salad, which would have been fine if the flavors were in harmony but it was far from it, and navel oranges instead of blood oranges."

  • "I have been going to this restaurant since 1975. However the past several years I haven't been able to go. I was delighted to find it was still the wonderful place it has always been.....excellent food, nice ambiance and friendly service. We were easily able to hold a conversation. There was no need to shout over our neighbors so we could hear one another. I especially liked being offered a half glass of wine instead of a full second glass."

  • "We had a lovely time at Bay Wolf. The atmosphere was nice. We sat on the enclosed patio and found it cozy and comfortable. The menu was creative and full of things we wanted to try. It was nice to have the option of getting an appetizer sized portion of all the entrees. The wine list was good. The only challenge we had was finding parking so allow a little extra time to search for a spot."

  • "Bay Wolf is a special restaurant. I have been going there on special occasions for the past 25 years. The service is excellent and the food is spot on even when they are slammed with customers. It is fine dining and in the fine dining capital (the Bay Area) of Northern California, they rank among the top. The only criticism I had on this particular visit was that their duck entree, while on appearance looked perfectly cooked, was somewhat tough and not as tasty as usual. The restaurant could not have done anything about my next critique. The people who we were seated next to made sure that everone heard every word of their conversation through their meal. Not the restaurant's fault."

  • "The service was very good, however our waitress was abrupt and didn't have time for questions. I asked for a sauvignon blanc and she said that they had a good one, didn't offer any explanation, and when she came back she brought it. My friend ordered the duck breast, which she did check to see if it was available, then came back and said that will be medium rare. I could hear her tell other tables the same. She didn't want to take the time for you to make a decision. When we first arrived, it was not busy, but was quite busy when we left. The food was excellent and it is in my neighborhood."

  • "This restaurant had been on our list of places to try in the East Bay. Making a reservation was quite easy. There was a covered patio or indoor dining. On a Friday evening we were given a choice of where to sit. That was nice. There were several birthday parties with multi generations enjoying themselves. The menu was comfort food at its best. We loved the duck and the calamari. The service was outstanding. When asked if I loved my main meal I was tepid about it. Not because of the way the dish was cooked, because my husband LOVED it. I just wasn't feeling it. Well that was just unacceptable to the lovely staff and they promptly took away my dish and I got to order something else. I was so touched they care that much."
