Award-winning Executive Chef Paul Gstrein brings culinary drama to his inventive dishes for lunch, dinner and the enormously popular Champagne Sunday Brunch.   • "Some of the food was really good and some not so good. It took 45 minutes to get a menu and an hour before we got our initial drinks. The bread actually came out after the appetizers which were about 1.5 hours and when the main course finally came they brought 2 dishes from another table and completely missed a meal. The whole restaurant seemed to be running in slow motion. However some of the seafood was very good. I might go back just to see if it was the server or the whole operation that was that bad."

  • "This was my first visit to the Bayside. It is a nicely decorated spot nestled in Newport. The bar looked like a hot spot and the live music from the piano sounded sweet. The staff was friendly and service was very good. We sat on the patio with a beautiful view of the bay. The food was outstanding and dessert yummy. I will definitely return and highly recommend the Bayside."

Not good service, not good valet (didn't even want to give us a ticket!), dated appearance, server clothes actually quite gross and dirty looking (and smelling). Not a professional service staff at all - yet expensive menu items. Won't be back."

  • "I went to Bayside for dinner with my girlfriend and found a wonderful and elegant restaurant in the process. The restaurant is located almost in a residential area and is surrounded by tasteful piano bar music and high-standing cream drapes. My girlfriend and I are foodies and think that Bayside is a great romantic restaurant with solid service and a smile. We both had a nice bottle of wine (the restaurant has a nice wine list). I had the spicy crab cake and chicken. Both were moist and excellent. My girlfriend had the beet salad and paella. Both dishes were incredible, fresh and very solid. If you are looking for a laid back restaurant with high class feel and grace, Bayside is indeed a proven winner."

  • "I ALWAYS CONTEND THAT MOTHERS DAY AND FATHERS DAY ARE THE WORST DAYS TO GO BUT THAT BEING SAID THE FOOD WAS VERY GOOD. IT WAS VERY CROWDED SO THE STAFF WAS OVERWORKED BUT FOR A HOLIDAY I WAS VERY HAPPY. THEY HAVE GREAT SALADS AND OUR WAITRESS WAS VERY PLEASANT. IT WAS COLD ON THE PATIO THOUGH AND OUR HEATER DID NOT WORK.."

  • "Bayside has a long standing relationship with the local neighborhood and Balboa residents, delivering consistent and familiar fare. Service is very good, very friendly and engaging. The food is pretty basic and "safe" but given the clientele doubtful the restaurant will get too adventurous and will continue to stick to a formula that works - my mother would definitely enjoy this place. The bar scene is pretty good, a few Tv's and a nice combo house band playing a mix of music."

  • " My dining partner and I like to try places we haven't tried before. We were not disappointed. We were seated at a large booth and had very good service. A lot of activity seemed to be happening in the bar area some distance from our dining location, where the atmosphere was quiet--our preference. The menu has lots of interesting items, but I chose the lamb shanks and he chose the lamb chops. The portions were large and the accompaniments were lovely, as was the salad we split. We will likely go to Bayside again!"

  • "When we arrived the hostess surprised us by stating that we had no reservation. From the very start the hostess had a very unpleasant and unprofessional attitude. When I inquired about the reservation missing she responded rudely asking if I wanted to review her reservation list insinuating I did not believe her. We were seated outside on the patio which was a poor location due to all the street noise. Our server was great smoothing out the initial wrinkle we experienced."

Christy, our waitress , was very helpful with explaining the menu and seemed pleased to serve us. The staff was efficient especially since it was a busy Saturday night. The music was an extra bonus which we enjoyed."

  • "We have dined at Bayside many times, always enjoy the dining room there with good food, drink & service. I will mention two negatives concerning our most recent visit. They do not offer Caesar Salad because the Chef doesn't like anchovies. I don't like some wines, but I make sure to have them on hand for guests who do. Second, an excellent shrimp entree was paired with a poor choice compliment, an ugly and bad tasting risotto. But we will be back, the good far outweighs an occasional bad."

The lamb was very gamey and the paella (mussels undercooked, risotto not cooked and was more like a rice) Would not return. The prices were out of line for the quality of food."

  • "When I found 2 flies in my drink at the bar, the bartender wasn't at all concerned and offered no apology. He replaced my drink with a glass with a napkin pulled over the top and made some sarcastic comment. The shrimp in the shrimp cocktail are not fresh (they are pre-frozen and thawed). The waiter was very nice, though, and the swordfish was very good. "

  • "On busy Mothers' Day, our 2:30 p.m.reservation was honored, on time, at a very busy time with lots of people waiting at the door. The service was speedy with no rushed shortcuts. The waitress was totally charming. All ancillary help were efficient and timely. The food was delicious. Bayside is one of our favorite places to dine. "

  • "Although Mother's Day is a special event and groups may stay considerably longer, Bayside has been serving a Mother's Day Brunch for years. Even though we came on time for the Mother's Day Brunch, we sat about 55 min late for our 1 o'clock meal. The food was excellent quality. Five of us ordered the lamb. It was very good but we were told it would be medium. It came an excellent well done. I realize the facility was having trouble keeping up to its high standard for whatever reason. We all had a good time, but it wasn't really quite at the level we have come to expect for the Bayside. "

  • "My husband, son and I had made a reservation for Sunday brunch at 1:30. When we arrived, we were told the only table they had available was behind a piano and the singer that performs during brunch. To sum up the entire fiasco would take more characters than allowed here, but suffice it to say that because we were seated at a table that didn't have a waiter assigned to it because of the terrible location, we waited 15 minutes to be acknowledged at our table, and about 45 minutes for our first course. Then our main course came out 3 minutes later. I ordered dessert when we received our main course as we didn't want to wait another 45 minutes...of course, our dessert came out about 5 minutes later. Worst service ever at any restaurant."

But even better was the Octopus appetizer - very unique preparation that was a feast for the senses and NOT too filling. The Halibut was perfectly cooked but a bit bland. Nice wine selections.
