Diner Reviews
  • "Bavettes is a fine dining establishment with great service, food and decor. The only thing to be improved would be more menu choices"

  • "Spent a lovely romantic anniversary dinner at Bavettes Sat evening. Took our reservation on time. Loved our little corner banquette table.Served us complimentary glasses of wine !!! Caesar salad with whitefish a must have( could serve two easily), and my husband loved his wedge salad with thick slabs of bacon! Husband had flatiron steak with pomme frites, and I had the petite filet. Both cooked perfectly. Pomme frites wonderful too. Also the creamed spinach was served piping hot and was delicious. Portion sizes were quite ample! No room for dessert but the chocolate cream pie looked Devine that our neighbors at the next table ordered. They said it was outstanding. Service was above average. Would absolutely return."

  • "beef tongue with potatoes, shrimp in garlic, oysters, whitefish cesars' salad - fresh, different, and delicious. service is very good and prompt drink menu is nice - had Negroni drink"

  • "Bavette's has amazing food and drink selection, and a great layout with beautiful decor, but the service was not so great. We were sat almost 25 mins after our reso, took nearly 15 minutes to get drinks at the (not busy) bar, and our server, after our order was placed, was not attentive at all."

  • "sexy but elegant room, classy service, phenomenal food, stellar drinks. my husband and I loved everything about Bavette's! there's something to be said about a place that does seemingly "simple" food impeccably well. our standouts were the fresher than fresh oysters, the indulgent Caesar salad, the perfectly cooked steak frites and the rich, but delicate, chocolate creme pie. we can't wait to return and try the stunning pork chop the table next to us ordered!"

  • "Bavette's provides a wonderful combination of great food, great service and great ambiance. Every visit reveals the outstanding consistency of the restaurant. You will pay for your experience, but will not find a better one in the city."

  • "Went to Bavette's, for my boyfriend birthday. Everything was amazing!"

  • "The seafood tower is amazing! It has huge shrimp, lobster, crab, oysters, and ceviche! Delicious! We split the 10 oz bone filet after all of that seafood and it is hands down the best steak in Chicago! This remains one of our favorite restaurants in the city!"

  • "We'd heard a lot about this restaurant and it lived up to it's billing! Great food. Terrific ambiance. I felt like I was dining in a clubby speak easy, Soft music in the background added to the experience. My ribeye was cooked to perfection. Attentive service. I'm going back!"

  • "Dined with several friends, to celebrate a birthday. First time and was very pleased. The space is beautiful, very intimate, yet warm and welcoming. Overall, food was terrific. Best smoked whitefish caesar salad I have ever had - would go back for that alone. Thought they might have offered the birthday girl a dessert, but did not."

  • "Just a purely classic steakhouse. Feels like you are in another generation. Service and food were spectacular! Highly suggest the parlor for a more romantic setting. Love everything about the place! I forgot I was in a big city and any stress just seemed to disappear. Very comforting food and ambiance!"

  • "The Elote corn is to die for.... Chop was great.... service stellar... Portions are very large so unless you can take it home, plan to leave half on the plate. Will be back!"

  • "I have dined here 3 times now, and really love this restaurant... this past visit the service was a bit slow (initial greet and drink orders, and I think they forgot to "fire" our food, as it was delayed)... food and choices are excellent --- fried chicken is good, but they could season it more (yes, they provide hot sauce and ranch on the side, but it needs some seasoning too). A fun place for a small to mid-size group, great atmosphere --- but it is very busy and that unfortunately seems to affect service sometimes."

  • "We chose Bavette's as our special dining experience in Chicago, and we were NOT disappointed! Beautiful rare filet, and service was impeccable."

  • "We had dinner with another couple and everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meals. the petit fillet was small at 6 oz, but was the perfect size for me. We had 2 shrimp starters and both were excellent. The spicy corn side was also great. The ambience is beautiful and although very dark, its a great setting. I highly recommend eating here, you will not be disappointed."

  • "Start to finish, the food was excellent. Really cool ambiance and attentive, friendly service. Perfect for celebrating a special occasion in Chicago!"

  • "My husband and I went with our 2 adult children and their sig other and had a great time and great dinner! Oysters to start are highly recommended. The food was fabulous and our waiter was just friendly and chatty enough without being intrusive. Probably one of our top 10 favorite restaurants in Chicago. Loved it!"

  • "Every aspect of this restaurant, from the greatest steak I have ever eaten to the frequency and magnitude of water refilling, was absolutely without equal. It is not cheap, but it is a bargain at twice the price."
    Dined on 7/10/2014
  • "One of the best meals I ever had. Generous portions, amazing, kind service, and above all delicious food. I will absolutely go again, and again, and again. The only drawback was the abnoxious group of business bros near us that were ruining the mood for everyone. One thing you can't control is your clientele I guess."

  • "My third visit and it just keeps getting better! The Berkshire pork chop was juicy and flavorful. The tomato salad was warm and smoky. The service by Brandon was charming perfection. I just can't get enough of this place!"

  • "Though it's known for great steak, I highly recommend the pork chop. It was fantastic! Don't pass up the corn as a side, it's a wonderfully unusual delight. The dessert offerings lead little to be desired but the Goldbrick makes for a twist on a classic sundae, especially if the malted whiskey is one of the Icecream selections for the evening. Great atmosphere, love the subtle romantic yet masculine design of the dining room. You won't be disappointed... enjoy."

  • "If you're looking for a great (and novel) dining experience, this is it. You can eat here a bit cheaply (amazingly), but the sky is also the limit on prices. It's well worth the trip."

  • "Our first dinner at Bavette's had been the best meal out we've had, and this experience (our second) topped that one. The steak was just slightly better cooked (go for rare-plus if you want literally no grey but no purple), and the service was impeccable. The hosts were clearly reluctant to let us have a cocktail at their awesome bar, pushing back our reservation, but they made it happen. Also, the bottles of wine we brought were chilled while we went to the bar first - a service the restaurant provides literally at cost to themselves, since the corkage is free. Make sure to tip your server extra for this, since s/he loses out the most for this service. Every dish we had was excellent - we skipped the very short dessert list this time."

  • "Awesome spot for great steak and excellent service! The cost was surprisingly reasonable considering what a hot spot the steak house is in Chicago"

  • "The atmosphere and service were outstanding - a great special occasion place, has a very "speakeasy" feel. Food was excellent - meats were cooked to perfection and server was very knowledgeable about menu and seasonal additions. I would definitely go back and recommend to anyone - but be prepared to leave very full - and make sure to save room for the chocolate cream pie!!"

  • "Was really excited to try this place but was very underwhelmed. We ordered the bone in dry aged rib eye, deep fried chicken, pomme frites, thick cut bacon and chocolate pie. First, the steak was not very good. It lacked marbelling and juiciness. I've had much better bone in rib eyes before. It was really disappointing. Not worth it at all. The fried chicken really lacked flavour. Popeyes chicken has more flavour. The thick bacon was amazing. Crispy, savoury, sweet. Lots of flavour. Pomme frites had a nice dipping sauce with it. Chocolate pie was outstanding. Delicious chocolate ganache with fresh whipped cream on a Oreo crust. It's a must try. Dinner came out to $140 with tip Entrees were terrible, sides and dessert were great!"

  • "This is my second time dining at Bavette's. Dry aged steak is my favorite all time red meat experience. Also loved their fried chicken, sweet potato & gold brick sundae. Excellent cocktails as well!"

  • "We had a fantastic experience. The food was outstanding (and dessert), the wine was wonderful, service was outstanding and professional, and the overall atmosphere was comfortable. We both had steak and it was beautifully prepared and exactly how we requested they be cooked. The wine list is descriptive and suggestive for pairings. The dessert we ordered was the cheesecake. We were not expecting how large the portion was. However, we went in the later evening (so many open tables) and instead of seating us away from a loud couple complaining the entire time they were dining, we were seated right next to them. Nonetheless my boyfriend and I completely enjoyed the experience and will surely return here for another special occasion dining."

  • "The $60 bone in Ribeye first brought to the table was very rare instead of Medium and frankly tough to cut! The waiter agreed and ordered me a new steak which was excellent and lived up to the excellent reviews. We appreciate that they were anxious to get it right so in the end, it was a great evening for our Anniversary!"

  • "We went for a great dinner as a cap to our weekend trip to Chicago (first time in the city for both of us). The food was excellent - the classic ribeye was fantastic, as were the sides (roasted tomatoes and the elote corn). We were jammed full and had to take dessert to go. Our waiter was attentive, helpful - and pretty enthusiastic about the menu!"

  • "The space is dark (not too dark), brick, and wood. Very warm and inviting. The mixed oyster appetizer was fantastic.....but expensive. $3.50 per oyster. The steaks were outstanding - this from a Houstonian where great steak places are in abundance. The wine list was surprisingly small and needs to be expanded. But absolutely worth putting on your list. Make your reservations well in advance - it's a tough reservation to hook."

  • "Had a terrific and decadent dinner. Cocktails at the bar were excellent. Our server was attentive and had a great personality. Fabulous corkage policy (one bottle per couple, no fee but share a glass with the table next door, who will do the same). Standout dishes included the bone marrow, the pork chop was beautiful and I had a bone on filet which was great. Not sure any dishes would be bad. Ill definitely come back."

  • "Amazing ambiance! You felt like you were back in the 1920's. You can really relax and enjoy the food here. We were there for over 2 hours just for dinner for 2. The food was very good and cooked perfectly; however, we were a little disappointed in the steaks. They did not have as much flavor and excitement as some of the other steakhouses. We will definitely come back for a drink at the bar to enjoy the atmosphere, but probably not for dinner."

  • "Steak was overcooked first time. So we ate the sides and then the steak. Still would recommend though. Amazing wine and vibe. Thanks"

  • "Oysters, salmon tartar, fried chicken, T-bone ribeye, filet mignon, and lemon meringue pie; it was all done well and we will definitely be back again. Loved the dark and intimate ambiance it offered along with the knowledgable and friendly service."
