Baume & BrixFun food for foodiesInventive dishes that don't seem to be repeats of every other new restaurant! Everything was delicious.5/17/2013 12:00:00 AMGood food but seemed abandonedThe menu is small but impressive and while we all ordered something different (including several different starters) they were all very good. The drinks are also impressive. I will say that while some places are a little too noisy, this one was actually quite quiet. I would come here again but try it closer to the weekend so it isn't quite as much like a library.5/14/2013 12:00:00 AMvery nice people, interestingvery nice people, interesting food, wait staff was educated, informative, and enthusiastic. the menu is somewhat limited, choices eclectic, it is hard to imagine people returning repeatedly for either the menu or the ambience.5/11/2013 12:00:00 AMOutstanding! The menu was a work of art. Such flavor and creativity. We loved it and cant wait to go back!5/11/2013 12:00:00 AMTerrific in Every WayThis restaurant has been open for about five months and operates up there with the best. The space is cool, the servers well trained, and the food imaginative and delicious.
The wine list is pretty good but on the pricey side as is the food but it is well worth it.5/4/2013 12:00:00 AMLunchDay #2 of serving lunch. All systems go! Pork belly mazuna appetizer was great. Burger with a fried egg was different and delicious. Service with lots of smiles. We look forward to a return visit.5/3/2013 12:00:00 AMWonderful Creative MenuHad a wonderful dinner with friends. The menu is very creative and the food really outstanding. Had a great server who was able to accommodate our every need.5/3/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat addition to the neigborhoodI had a great experience and will definitely go back. Everything from the food to the service and atmosphere was perfect. We tried the grilled Octopus, Burrata and Red Curry Short Rib and was loved them all. I also found the portion sizes to be appropriate for the price. Our server was very helpful in guiding us on the menu and cocktail list too, the Kimura was very refreshing. I can't wait to go back and try the Butterfish and Gnocchi.5/2/2013 12:00:00 AMOverpricedEverything tasted wonderful, but when you are paying entree prices for appetizer portions...I also thought this was a hot spot and was a bit dismayed as how empty it was when we walked in.5/2/2013 12:00:00 AMVery clever menu almost doesn'tVery clever menu almost doesn't do the inventive and exciting food justice. Can't wait to go back.4/27/2013 12:00:00 AMThe Naked Lobster and CrispyThe Naked Lobster and Crispy Duck were highlights, but everything was really good.4/27/2013 12:00:00 AMLove the blending of flavorsGreat food with a nice blending of flavors. The foie gras and oysters were outstanding. So was the pork chop and the red curry beef. The cocktails were so yummy. We would definitely go back.
It's a good place for groups and its loud in there. We went on a Saturday night.4/27/2013 12:00:00 AMThe total experience was exemplary,The total experience was exemplary, the food was outstanding and the service was spot on.
We had the short rib and the black cod and it was out of this world.4/27/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellent flavors and reasonableExcellent flavors and reasonable prices considering the quality of the food. Attentive, but not overbearing service. Very attractive space and surprisingly conversation friendly given the hard surfaces. We will definitely go back.4/26/2013 12:00:00 AMHave had three phenomenalHave had three phenomenal meals here so far. Not only does Baume & Brix have a great atmosphere, but the staff is extremely knowledgeable and have consistently provided wonderful recommendations. Highly recommend the Shrimp & Grits Bisque, Black Cod, and Cookies & Milk!4/25/2013 12:00:00 AMSpectacular food with an incredibleSpectacular food with an incredible mix of contemporary technique and classic preparation all used to remarkably positive effect. Haven't enjoyed a meal this much in a long time.4/23/2013 12:00:00 AMBaume and Brix has a large,Baume and Brix has a large, gorgeous bar that is underutilized before 11 pm. After that, it starts filling up with the younger crowd that can't afford to eat at the restaurant!4/20/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellent from start to finish.Excellent from start to finish. Pork Chop and Shrimp/Grits Bisque are a must. Great wait staff.4/20/2013 12:00:00 AMLiz HansenWe started with the buratta salad which was amazing. It was a great mix of salty, sweet and peppery. I had the duck leg which was cooked perfectly and was paired with strawberry and goat cheese grits and pickled salad which added a sweet and tangy aspect to the plate so that it rounded out the plate very well. The potato chip gnocchi was incredible as well. We were well taken care of but not overly doted upon which was wonderful! A great dining experience overall!4/16/2013 12:00:00 AMThis is a good place. TheThis is a good place. The menu is creative and the food tastes good. But I just wasn't wowed. Thats why I gave it a 3, but it is worth checking out.4/15/2013 12:00:00 AMThis place is "the Baume"!!This was one of the most enjoyable dining experiences I've had in the past several months. The "Dealer's Choice" cocktail was excellently crafted especially by the mixologist to suit my tastes - a wonderful option for those looking for unique cocktailing experiences. Our server (Dustin) was extrememly knowledgable and detailed in his descriptions of the chef's offerings. You'll end up wanting to try everything! The icing on the cake was the dessert. My friends and I ordered the Milk and Cookies which consisted of freshly baked cookies and delicious vanilla-infused milk. The presentations were amazing, the food was exceptional and the service was lightning-fast! Highly recommend!!!4/10/2013 12:00:00 AMWe went with another coupleWe went with another couple and shared three apps and four of their entrees. The Red Curry Short Rib was incredible!! Fantastic cocktails as well. Had a spectacular evening.4/6/2013 12:00:00 AMHave the octopus, and theHave the octopus, and the fois gras and the carpaccio and the cod.... You get the idea, fabulous food. If you are a slow eater (we like to savour our food) you need to tell them as our fois gras came out 2 minutes after the octopus- both are warm dishes. We sent it back and got another one 20 mins later so no complaints there. We will be back for sure- thoroughly enjoyable- and I really want to book the chefs table for 6!4/5/2013 12:00:00 AMInteresting menu. Lots ofInteresting menu. Lots of fish options. My thoughts was it was a bit too foodie. Nothing on it made me want to come back right away and try something else. I'm sure everything tasted great -- my appetizer and black cod was delicious -- but the portion sizes are super small, especially compared to the price (I definitely left still with an appetite). Presentation reminded me of fancy 80s food. The mark-up for a bottle of wine was also pretty high. Overall: great tasting food, excellent service, but high prices for portion size and drinks and menu didn't have those items I felt the need to return right away to try.4/5/2013 12:00:00 AMEverything was great the foodEverything was great the food was delicious, the restaurant was pleasant and the chairs were comfortable. Loved the drink menu!!
The only thing that could use improvement is when the servers deliver the food to the table they should look people in the eyes as they explain the dishes, speak in a audible voice without mumbling.3/28/2013 12:00:00 AMAmazing Octopus and Burrata.Amazing Octopus and Burrata. Food was outstanding, and the cocktails were even better. If you are adventurous with cocktails, go here!3/22/2013 12:00:00 AMLovely meal, pork chop, octopusLovely meal, pork chop, octopus and desserts stand out.3/22/2013 12:00:00 AMI was VERY please with ourI was VERY please with our visit....
There were four of us, so the waiter suggested appetizers to share and one entree each -
We went with the Octopus, the Naked Lobster and the Carpaccio
All of them were very good - the Naked Lobster was very fresh, but I didn't LOVE it, so if I went back and reordered 3 appetizers, I would get the Carpaccio, Octopus and then try something different!
For the entrees, the porkchop was our declared "winner" because it was a large enough portion to be filling and it tasted FANTASTIC! The cod was delicious, but the serving was pretty small and my husband was definitely still hungry... Gnocchi, very tasty, again, entree size kinda small. Skip the grilled cheese and get the Frosty & Fries and the panacotta3/22/2013 12:00:00 AMThe food was very good andThe food was very good and very imaginative, but uneven in execution. Service was very good and friendly. The wine list contained some very hard to find grape varieties and the sommelier was very helpful in providing information. The wine list was also reasonably priced.3/21/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellent meal from beginningExcellent meal from beginning to end to be repeated soon.3/16/2013 12:00:00 AMKids in towThis restaurant is absolutely beautiful inside. The decor is comfortable and elegant. The waitstaff is friendly and accommodating. It had been suggested we order many small plates but in hindsight I don't think we needed to. Would have preferred my own dish as opposed to sharing many. While the food was excellent especially the first courses, I found the prices to be a bit on the high side for the portion size you got. I would definitely return to this restaurant for drinks (which were very tasty) and a snack at the bar.3/16/2013 12:00:00 AMVery much enjoyed ourselvesVery much enjoyed ourselves and we were very well taken care of. Highly recommend.3/12/2013 12:00:00 AMCreative, Delicious & Fun!Such a fun evening. Our group of four ordered numerous dishes to share and everything was excellent. The octopus fun dip, the beef carpaccio and the duck were the favorites. Extremely friendly, attentive service and Baume & Brix has such a nice, energetic vibe. In addition to highly creative, delicious food there is a wonderful cocktail program and nice wines to compliment the food. We plan to return in a couple of months to do the special chef's table experience which is held in a room occupying an old elevator shaft! Definitely highly recommend Baume & Brix; worthy of celebrating a special occasion but affordable enough for a date night or nice dinner with friends.2/26/2013 12:00:00 AMThis is our second time here. This is our second time here. Loved it all. All the food was creative and delicious. We will return. Our guests loved it too. The cookies and milk, divine. I ordered short ribs and loved it all. Can't wait until the next time.2/15/2013 12:00:00 AMMixed Feelings...Beautiful restaurant. Dined during restaurant week but decided to order from regular menu due to some diet restrictions. Food taste superb and waiter best of the best. Portions were very small (left hungry) and chef not accommodating when requesting a lower fat option (could not find a starter that worked). Regularly dine at finer restaruants but found over the top expensive for what you get. Little thing like rolls not heated through and a little frozen inside, over zealous refilling water glasses each time you take a sip, no place for larger handbags from work (servers kept stepping on them). Better options elsewhere at this price point...2/6/2013 12:00:00 AMWe enjoyed our dinner duringWe enjoyed our dinner during retaurant week. Very creative food, great cocktails and wine pairing. Restaurant is very "California" in appearance and quite noisy until much of the crowd departed. A real hot spot.2/4/2013 12:00:00 AMBaume is the Bomb!Last night my wife and I enjoyed our second dinner at Baume & Brix; we had gone during the soft opening so it was nice seeing the expansion of the menu. Everything we ate was excellent with the Octopus Fun Dip appetizer (a play on the fun dip many enjoyed in childhood) and the duck entree being my favorites. The octopus is a must order - perfectly cooked, whimsical and interesting different flavored "dips" (spices). The staff at Baume & Brix is outstanding; they are really friendly and attentive and seem passionate about the restaurant. The space itself is really nice and they have amazing cocktails - Baume & Brix is the total package and well worth a visit. Just beware, it is so good that once you dine here you will want to come back soon!1/15/2013 12:00:00 AMDon't listen to naysayersPay no attention to the off-base reviews from Time Out and Reader. The dishes here were playful but hardly "science food." Every plate served to us had a perfect balance of sweet & savory, perhaps that duality is what confused some critics. The food was all quite simple, delicious, and well-prepared and nothing was overtly conceptual. The naked lobster is one of the best lobster dishes served in Chicago, the desert was exceptional, and the cocktails were perfect. This place seems to have it all going for it, even a beautiful interior and great service and even though it's only been open a few months it seems like everything is working pretty well already. I'll be back often in 2013.12/31/2012 12:00:00 AMWe very much enjoyed our wholeWe very much enjoyed our whole meal. Meant to be shared and we did just that between four people. We had the lobster naked (delicious) and octopus (wonderful) and pig's tail (good but was not our favorite). We will return for sure.12/8/2012 12:00:00 AMThe pork chop was excellent!!!
