Diner Reviews
  • "Can't say enough about this place. We were literally there from 8 pm until 1 am. Started with an hour or so at the bar. High Tide was my favorite. Then sat down for dinner and had a mix of apps from the bar and regular menu, followed by entrees for our group of six. Three great bottles of wine later, we moved to the lounge room and kept the night going. Staff was friendly and on point"

  • "Been there for lunch and dinner. Food is a big improvement over the previous owners, great view and good service. Only complaint is the lunch menu needs more choices - very limited. Maybe take some of the dinner choices and downsize them."

  • "It is no longer Michael Anthony's The decor is changed but not that much.... The menu had few choices the night I was there. It was passover, they tried to help... I didnt have wine... Came to about $100 2 salads 2 entrees 2 coffees Had read some reviews that were not very good but decided to try it anyway... My girlfriend loved the restaurant, the atmosphere, the decor... the food... and the view... So... Its a nice place to come for a night out. Nothing to rave about, didnt have anything to complain about although it seems pricey for chicken and halibut... Great place to go once the weather is even nicer to sit outside or have the windows open... for the view..."

  • "We had a great dining experience this weekend. The appetizers and oysters were delicious. The drinks took along time to get to the table and the entrees were lacking in flavor for the price. "

  • "We spent Good Friday and our 5 yr Anniversary at Battello's. It was a wonderful evening. We hit the seafood tower, prawns scampi, and halibut. All were fantastic. The risotto that came with the prawns was the best I've had. For desert we split the beignets and Irish car bomb Sundae- both were great and the right portions- not too heavy. We will be coming back a lot. Parking was a bit tricky to figure out. Oh and by far the best views of lower manhattan you can get! "

  • "The atmosphere is just incredible especially because of the views. After the shrimp ball appetizer which was great we went on Open Table and proceeded to make 4 additional reservations. Then the main courses were served and the fish only adequate the side dish was very salty while the chicken was good, but the portion was very small. The staff was courtesy and helpful. I have heard that it is a good spot for brunch and may give it another try being as the views from this restaurant are just over the top. Unfortunately, we cancelled the 4 other reservations while we were sitting there. "

  • "I met some girlfriends for lunch here. Not crowded as the day was rainy. It's a beautiful location though parking could be an issue at night or weekends. It sits at the end of the Newport Yacht Pier. We sat overlooking the water. The servers were very friendly and attentive. The wine they suggested was lovely. We shared the Wagyu Beef Carpacio-excellent. Funghi pizza was delicious. Wish we could have tried dessert but didn't have room or time to indulge. I'm panning to return with my husband when the weather gets warmer. You can stroll along the water and enjoy the NYC views."

  • "They have a good thing going at Battello. The ambiance on the water with the skyline is fantastic. Chef DePersio's menu and food were delicios. The service was solid. A new hot spot. Can't wait to go back."

  • "Food was great. Service stellar. The bar staff needs to hustle more but short of that it's a great place."

  • "Based on their reviews and Facebook page I choose this place to celebrate my 25th birthday. BIGGEST MISTAKE EVER ! The food is overpriced for no reason, my vegetarian friend only had one food option . The waitress went on praising their fresh drink so I ordered a mojito. However, I had no mint leaves in my mojito . ( First time this has happened) Also the biggest issue, the servers are slow. They are too busy talking to each other than doing their job. I mean come on I went on a Monday April 14. You would of think service would have been much quicker. Not that this is relevant but their uniforms are hilarious . Reminded me of GAP clothes from 1996."

  • "so i really wanted to love this place, but they have a way to go. i booked open table for 4PM, only to be call the morning of my res to be told the kitchen closed at 4. that threw off my day, but we arrived at 3:30, only to realize it was brunch and brunch only. 5 of about 12-15 offerings were not offered, but i was only told this when i tried to order said items. food was only ok, french fries were dreadful and portions were small. a burger ordered medium rare was delivered almost raw, which was ok with me, but would not have been for most. the servers were nice kids but not seasoned servers, so looking for them to come back was annoying. so, will i go back? yes, i'll give them a month first tho, and then make a final determination."

  • "Having lived in the neighborhood for a little over a year...we were less than impressed with this place when it was Michael Anthony's. HOWEVER...that has ALL changed! The food is AMAZING! Great selections of fresh seafood as well as other options for the land lovers...we did the Chef's Tasting, and from the salads to the appetizers...all the way through dinner and dessert...we just kept saying...OMG this is incredible! Our server was a little overwhelmed, as the place was packed, so some elements of the service were slow (i.e. getting a bottle of wine, and attentiveness) - BUT...even though our server was slammed...the rest of the staff (runners and even one of the managers/owners) were HAPPY to help address our needs. WE WILL BE BACK!"

  • "My first visit to Batello was a good one. I like the architectural and decorative changes they've made to the space (relocated the bars, etc.). The food and service was good and an improvement from Michael Anthony's. Suggestions: please make more "tables for two" available outside. Holding tables for four 'just in case' four people arrive, while letting two people who had a reservation for a table for two wait may be financially smart, but not good customer service and sets a negative town. Lastly... the restaurant now has more of a contemporary vibe... I suggest you better dress your service staff. Waiters should be in black pants and white shirts, not blue denim-style shirts. It cheapens the atmosphere and makes the staff look sloppy."

  • "My wife and I stopped in for dinner on a Saturday night. I started with PEI mussels which were deliciously spicy, followed by pancetta wrapped scallops on red quinoa, also delicious. My wife had two appetizers -- a wonderful scallop crudo followed by grilled octopus with shaved sunchokes. Both were very tasty. The service was attentive and efficient, and the view of the Hudson River and the New York City across the river is always beautiful. It is great that the space finally has a restaurant worthy of the view. We will be back."

  • "Had dinner with a party of 8 at Battello this Thursday. Mixed crowd - Every person at the table was blown away. From the initial entry into the behemoth of a restaurant, to the welcoming, sunlit NYC view, mouths were agape and smiles were awash. From the artisinal cocktails (try the Shipwrecked) or local NJ brewed beer, attentive service, charming and understated decor and fantastic food you can remember that magical feeling of awe and gratitude that sometimes escapes us jaded NYers and is reserved for tourists. Fave apps include the scallop crudo, crab cake, zucchini salad and tuna rollatini. For entrees go for the cod or steak. And save room for the Irish Car Bomb. Prices are reasonable for a nice night out and you won't be disappointed."

  • "drinks and food overpriced. drinks 16.00 for a drink that is 3 sips. we are not in nyc! my husband had a special appetizer which was stuffed calimari with lamb. he received 4 thin slices of calimari and a bunch of potatoes to fill him up. perhaps, 1 whole calimaro sliced would be more approproate. i had a fried shrimp ball appetizer which came out lukewarm. my clams and spaghetti with scallions and paprika was excellent but very small portion. both, the bass and skatefish entrees were delicious and dessert was excellent. restaurant beautiful and staff efficicient. glad i checked it out but won't be back."

  • "I hate to be negative because I really like the place and it has great potential. Service was excellent. Ambiance is nice with amazing views of Manhattan. The food however was rather blah. The wedge salad was disappointing. The scallops were super salty. Maybe it just wasn't my night and I'd probably try it again if in the neighborhood on business. Definitely go for drinks and a view of the city. They had a good wine list and the bar was happening."

  • "We were really excited to try this new restaurant... Loved the design they did inside. Terrific views of the City. Cool bar area with lots of space. Overall ambiance is really good. Drinks at the bar took a long time (almost a half hour), but our server was apologetic and nice. It was dinner that was basically not great. The zucchini salad was dry and uninteresting. The gnocchi appetizer was good, not great, but small. Our friend ordered this as a dinner and liked it, despite the small portion. The ink pasta was fine. The scallops dish just didn't hang together. Wine list was limited but they had some decent wines for a good price, though. Overall, we left feeling bummed that this didn't deliver...maybe needs some time to improve."

  • "Food and service with few exceptions don't live up to price. Amazing location and view. Decor is sparse and cheap- but fine if the place wasn't at such a high price point. Would be fun for large events- food nothing mind blowing. Desert pretty great but didn't make up for the lack of remaining menu. Service has potential just very unorganized. Often non-existant. Better places for a couple to drop $200"

  • "After only being open 4 days, Battello put out an excellent meal. We had oysters to start and then Rock Shrimp Polpette and Sambuca cured Salmon as appetizers. All were outstanding. For dinner we had the Skate Wing and the Striped Bass. The only comment would be the skate wing wasn't seasoned properly. But I'm sure that will be corrected very soon. For dessert try the Bourbon Street. We loved it. The wine was reasonabley priced. We had a local Long Island wine that was very good. We look forward to returning as soon as possible."

  • "We had wonderful service, to accent a superb meal. The steak was amazingly tender, and tasty. The scallops were superb. And the Lobster Chowder was a dream. On top of all this, the view from the patio is unbelievable. We had a full moon and clear sky to go with the terrific view of downtown New York. Get there as the sun is setting if you can, its something to see."

  • "Battello is a knock-out restaurant right on the Hudson River in Newport, Jersey City. With the most breathtaking views, its hard to imagine that you would leave talking about the food and not just the NYC skyline. But the tuna rollatini appetizer, the black cod, and the Bourbon Street style beignets for desert was all we talked about the rest of the night. Servers are friendly and attentive, while water and clean plates and silverware seemed to appear seemlessly between courses. The owner, Cory, and his management staff worked the floor and greeted everyone as they entered this lavish large dining area. I would highly recommend this for a romantic date or for the wedding/important events that they are catering towards."

  • "We had dinner their opening weekend. Cocktail menu at the bar was great. Bartenders were prompt and courteous. Dinner service needs to improve. Waitstaff needs more training and restaurant should be staffed accordingly. Appetizers were great & arrived quickly. Lobster bisque was unique. Time between appetizer and dinner was over 70 minutes. Other tables were given complimentary drinks for the delay. Not a big fan but if they are going to do that for one table they should do it for all or none at all. Dinner itself was fantastic. I had the black cod which was cooked perfectly. My fiance had a seafood dish as well that I can't recall but she enjoyed it. We will return in a few months after they hopefully work out some of their opening kinks."

  • "Often times these new spots open up in the city, but Battellos truly is a spot I'm looking forward to going many times. Can't wait until the warm weather and the doors open on the water. Food is amazing and drink cocktails are very refreshing. Get the chicken ... I know, but it's worth it!"
