A word from Bathtub Gin
Gin was the predominant drink in the USA during the prohibition-era 1920's and many variations were created. "baththub gin" was developed in response to the poor-quality of alcohol that was available at the time; because the 18th amendment specifically prohibited the sale or manufacture of distilled alcohol, producers of gin were forced to use denatured alcohol. By mixing it with other flavorings, such as juniper berries, and allowing the mixture to steep in a tub for several hours or even days, the gin became more drinkable. Producers of "baththub gin" encouraged bartenders at hidden bars to create their own recipes for cocktails.

Still today, straight gin is not usually served on its own, since it tends to be extremely dry. Gin is often mixed with tonic water, vermouth or fruit juices to make it more palatable.
Upholding tradition, we mix our gin and other spirits with the finest and freshest fruits, juices, syrups and infusions in cocktails inspired by original recipes.

  • "Very unique and fun venue. We were a party of six which the host was able to accommodate after we booked a party of 2. Food was delicious, drinks were refreshing, and the servers had perfect timing. Will def come back!"

  • "The place is amazing and so much fun. The drinks were great and the smores are the best thing on the list!"

  • "The pork belly sliders with quail eggs were so good! The fries were crispy and the truffle aioli was a great compliment. The host and hostess were very friendly. The gnocchi was not good at all. The service was slow. The drinks were just ok and inconsistently made."

  • "This place is wonderful. The vibe, the food, the cocktails AND the service. This has become one of my "go-to" spots when I need to unwind amongst an unpretentious crowd in a beautiful setting."

  • "I came here with 2 friends on a Sunday night to watch the Wasabasco burlesque show while having dinner. We had a GREAT time! All of the cocktails were excellent and perfectly balanced. Get an Old Fashioned! It's the best one I've had in this city. We all shared: lamb spared ribs (good texture, but could have used a little more seasoning), lobster spring rolls (very good), gnocchi (very good), pork belly sliders (excellent!!), and smores. The smores were a lot of fun to make at the table. The service was OUTSTANDING... friendly, prompt and inviting. Ambiance was great and the show was really fun. I'd come back in a heartbeat!"

  • "First time at a burlesque show with my friend. We got the best seating! We were off to the side and in the middle, and we got wet! (interpret as you wish) :-P The food was delicious - small portions and a bit pricey, but it was worth it. Everything tasted great. I had the Dutch Gin Fix and I loved it. Evelyn (our server) recommended it - she is right on target with people's tastes and was very thorough with making sure our night was excellent. The burlesque performers were awesome too! Liked the artistry involved. The magical intro was fabulous! Everything made it feel like I was in a totally different world and it was delightful! Did some people watching, too, of the audiences around - it was fun to see their reactions as well."

  • "There was 3 of us and we booked way early to get a booth. When we changed the booking time by half an hour, they moved our seats to a 2 person table so that was uncomfortable. Apart from that,we left before the dj started so noise was largely only patrons and it was not somewhere you can have a quiet chat. Otherwise service was great, drinks weren't cheap but amply filled glasseshelped. Food was very good but the tastes were strong and not as subtle as we like. That said, the food was very good."

  • "The drinks and bartender are lovely. If you go early (right after work), no one is there and you can enjoy your drink and whatever else in peace -- otherwise the later it gets, the more pushy they will be trying to make you leave. This can be understandable in NY where there are endless lines... but the problem here is that they keep the entire place almost empty and still kick you out. The food isn't that great. The truffle fries were really the winner amongst the other mediocre items. I've now been here twice, and I'd rather have a beautiful drink somewhere else than deal with the hassle. The tippler is right around the corner afterall."

  • "An amazing end to our NY stay! We decided to to go to Bathtub for a final night cocktail only to find out on arrival it was burlesque night - bonus! An electric atmosphere, classy and entertaining performance from some beautiful ladies and perfect gin cocktails! When our waitress heard it was our honeymoon she brought us some complimentary S'mores which just topped the evening off for us! A must for all in NY! We will be back!"

  • "Bathtub Gin is one of those special places one should visit at least once, certainly more if possible. The ambience is amazingly different, a throwback to a by-gone era. The staff is very attentive, food is exquisite, and the prices certainly reasonable for the fare they offer."

  • "Cocktails are diverse, complex and absolutely delicious. I had one of their whiskey specials and a champagne/brandy cocktail hilariously called the Carol Channing. The Carol Channing is my FAVORITE. The roasted chicken came on a small platter, but was cooked perfectly and served with flavorful mushrooms. The truffle aioli fries were so good I ordered 2! Ambience is very 20's boudoir and with period-appropriate music playing in the background. It was quite dark and candlelit of course, but, hey! It's a speakeasy! What BLEW me away was the service. We had two different servers (we had to move to a bigger table) and they were both incredibly attentive, charming, and had a wonderful sense of humor. New absolute favorite in New York."

  • "Very cute & fun, right from opening up in back of the coffee shop. Service was very friendly and helpful, and the little tapas were quite nice. It might get expensive to try to fill up there, but for some nibbles and interesting cocktails it was great fun."

  • "Had a great time with a group of friends at this hidden little gin joint. It's inside a coffee store beyond a big door manned by a guy who looks like a bouncer. Very cool, 1920s vibe and decor. The food was tasty, though portions on the small side. The cocktails were a bit disappointing; they seem to make them on the VERY sweet side. But after a few of us sent ours back (the servers were very accommodating with this), we finally hit the right mix."

  • "Burlesque show on a Tuesday night, what more can you ask for? Great small platters as well as the whiskey menu. Definitely worth the visit and makes a perfect venue for friends visiting NYC. Overall a great experience, will be back again for sure."

  • "We went to Bathtub Gin for our first time while in NYC for our anniversary. I knew it was well reviewed, but I was still not prepared for what a fantastic experience it would be. Get dressed up, and add some 1920s elements to your outfit, if you wish. This is a very popular, classy kind of place with luscious decor and decadent drinks and plates. Reservations are HIGHLY recommended here if you wish to sit, even on a Sunday night! "

  • "Haven't tried the food at Bathtub Gin (had to submit a rating though so picked the middle one as I saw a table have smores which looked great) but have been a few times for late night drinks and it's a fun spot. On some days they have a light burlesque show (featuring a bathtub) and other times they have a light DJ spinning some great tunes. It's not always easy to get a table and it gets very crowded near the bar, but the convenient location in Chelsea and overall spirit of the place makes it an enjoyable spot."

  • "Great Sunday night out - free Burlesque show with talented performers.. ambience was retro, fun and cheeky and a perfect NY experience for my guest from out of town. It is a very special space, perfect for a group of friends or a romantic night out. Cocktails were delicious and service super quick - no snooty moody staff to be seen on the door or inside which was a relief, considering many speakeasys specialise in in a glacial welcome! Would definitely recommend."

  • "This restaurant was by far one of the coolest places I've been. My brother and I split 4 tapas and tried a few of the gin cocktails. The place had that speakeasy feel to it. I'd recommend going there with one other person. The seating for groups doesn't seem to be as comfortable. The tables are tiny. If you are looking for privacy this isn't the place. Awesome if you want a nice night out."

  • "we had a wonderful time, the staff, service and food was just fantastic. nicest people ever! I ordered the filet mingone... The most flavorful and tender I've ever had.....It cut with a butter knife . thank you all for a wonderful evening!"

  • "It's a prohibition bar, not a speak-easy. It was yell across-the-table loud, and the sound system pumped out techno and pop music as loud as any dance club. We went for casual drinks to chat, hoping for something like Raines Law Room, but couldn't hear each other. The drinks were ok and made with quality gin, but lackluster compared to other cocktail bars in the same price-range. On entering with a reservation, we were told we could only have the table for 45 minutes. I'm not sure if this was a normal rule, or if they had overbooked."

  • "This place is unbelievable! From the secret entrance, to the incredible staff to the phenomenal craft cocktail list, it just doesn't get any better. This will always be a stop for me in NYC from now on.... and at the top of my list of recommendations for others."

  • "Bathtub Gin is a great place to bring a date: lots of little tables, great lowlit ambience, plenty of fancy cocktails. The salmon I ordered was FANTASTIC. My only complaint might be that I wish they offered more vegetable sides or apps. Bartenders are generally awesome. Shout out to Theo! If you want to bring a date, or don't want to get caught in the bar crush on busy nights (like Fridays), RESERVING IS A MUST. Pretty much all tables are reserved every single night. Hard to get into the bar on Fridays/Saturdays, and bar is much more crowded then."

  • "Had a bad experience here (after having been before). Was meeting a client for drinks and we had a 6 PM reservation. Exactly 1 table out of 20+ had anyone at it (and I had a reservation) but they wouldn't seat me. Then when my client arrived they attempted to seat us next to the only other people in the entire place which was absurd. When I politely asked to be moved a few tables down (given that my client and I needed to talk about business) the hostess bristled. There was zero regard for our satisfaction. After I pushed back she went up front and came back a minute later and moved us. A terrible start to our evening there! Cocktails were delicious and we had a nice waitress but then upon exiting the coat check lady couldn't find my bag!"

  • "Putting this bar behind a false wall in a coffee-shop set the tone perfectly. It made me excited just to walk in. The bar looks and feels quite authentic, and it's fun realizing how much of the jazz music you're familiar with. While the $15 cocktails initially raised a few eyebrows, they are well worth it. Delicious and STRONG. You will not need more than two. The "Small Plates" were actually a good size. The hummus is recommended. Our waitress was super friendly, and the manager visited us twice, had stories to share, etc. Perfect night. The 2 hour time limit on the table was the only thing I didn't care for. We had a 7pm reservation, and had to vacate by 915. Still, I will be back for the Live jazz bands on Monday, or the cabaret."

  • "Taking a client out for what would be low-key drinks, I had no idea that we had just reserved prime-row seats for a burlesque show. I'd heard fanfare around Bathtub Gin, but this experience was mind-blowing. I've seen burlesque shows before, but never in a dining atmosphere. The girls literally walk through the entirety of the room while performing, and the finale show tops everything off. The drinks were great, and the food very good quality for a cocktail-oriented menu. Make sure you go to Bathtub Gin on a Burlesque Show night!"

  • "Wanted to surprise my gf with a trip to Bathtub Gin for her bday. We'd been there on a whim before, but got in too late to see the show. This time, she wanted a chance to see the ladies dance. Unfortunately, by the time I could make a reservation, the only availability was so late I was nervous we wouldn't get a good table or a chance to see much. However, Nikki took great care of us. Upon seeing the special request on my reservation, she called to confirm the bday plans and worked her magic to squeeze us into an earlier time slot, just before the show started. Even better, she snagged us a great table right up front! Needless to say, we had a blast. The drinks, the atmosphere and the show were all great. My gf had a wonderful bday!"
