A word from Bâtard
Drew Nieporent’s long commitment to Tribeca continues in the space that housed the legendary Montrachet and Corton. Chef/partner Markus Glocker’s modern European menu reflects his Austrian heritage and diverse experiences (Gordon Ramsay, Charlie Trotter). Dishes like Octopus “Pastrami,” Roasted Beets Linzer and Veal Tenderloin “Tramezzini” are inventive and delicious. Diners may order two ($55), three ($65) or four courses ($75) - fixed prices that represent excellent value.

Managing partner John Winterman, former longtime maître d’ at Daniel, welcomes you to a relaxed setting warmed by golden light and cozy banquettes. The wine list highlights the best of Burgundy; cocktails are expertly crafted.

overall had a good dining experience. food was great all around. service was mediocre which was surprising. also adding a $20 supplement to the lamb for 2 was totally unnecessary as it isn't any bigger/better than the other entrees. i would go back but would expect better service next time.

We went to Batard on friday evening. Could only get a 530 reservation. Food was terrific...seasonal, creative, not too fussy, and quite enjoyable. Service is still a little rough around the edges..... stumbles were addressed quickly and with a pleasant attitude. Would definitely return. Nice to see this quality of food at such a reasonable price point.

Really enjoyed the restaurant.......the food was very good & the service was attentive. The room is a do over from Corton & little has been done to spruce it up but since Batard delivers on the important points it doesn't detract much from the overall experience. Lamb was really delicious!!

I read a review of Batard and decided that my husband and I should celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary there. We were not disappointed. The prices were fair with 2-,3- and 4- courses offered. The food was seasonal, local and sublime: gorgeous chilled corn soup with scallops, the duck breast was succulent with a decadent duck liver mousse that makes you cry! I finished with the highly touted caramelized milk bread and was happy. The sommelier was attentive and service in general terrific. The noise level is a little high.

Batard was everything we'd hoped it would be. Polished servers were the perfect complement to a modern yet warm setting, until a table of oneophiles began to take precedence over our table of two. We enjoyed 4 courses, all impeccable. The tuna appetizer was one of the most interesting preparations of what is sometimes an overdone fish, with intricately seasoned loin segments, chopped fatty tartare, and gingery accents. The lobster was another winner, and the various uses of the buttery meat made for extremely interesting eating. Mains included the schnitzel (greaseless yet juicy) and the monkfish with perfectly textured, mushroom-infused house made pasta. The icing on the cake was the fromage blanc, light, airy, and just a bit sweet.

Overall great experience, however the courses came out too fast and the noise level was quite robust. But with a place as busy as Bâtard that goes with the territory.

Taking a credit card # is a little more pretentious than the overall ambience suggests. My biggest objection was the service. The food, which otherwise was well prepared, came out lukewarm. It is likely it just sat for a while before it was brought out. We couldn't flag down the server, as she was gone or helping the large party next to us. We did tell the sommelier who at first didn't think anything was wrong, and then said he would tell the chef. We never heard anything about it and did not see the server until the check. The food was good but there are too many choices available.

The food was excellent and creative, worthy of many trips. The service was a bit rough, though ... our waiter did not really know the menu or the offerings. The piece de resistance was, however, hearing from the Manager in response to my question of "Why Nespresso?" was "what's wrong with it?" At $6 a shot to be serving Nespresso (freeze dried flakes packed into little coffins many months ago) in a coffee town like NY is blasphemy. I can only guess that Nespresso made them a deal. It features prominently on the menu. Highly bizarre, must be meant to appeal to out-of-towners.

We dined at Batard for our annivesary and were pleased to see it had gotten off to a good start replacing Montrachet. Food was very good and the wine list, though short, was well thought out. Service was good but a little uneven. The only issue is the noise level which appears to be endemic in restaurants these days - some of us do want to converse and not shout when having dinner!

Attention was given to every detail! The fine service and exquisite food commenced with hot crusty mini baguettes with and without olives and sweet butter. The cold corn soup was as good as any I've ever had with poached scallops and crunchy, pickled small rectangles of jicama. The lobster hors d'oeuvre was equally masterful as was the roasted halibut. Just a splendid experience, with a thoughtful complimentary scoop of hand-crafted mint gelato to celebrate my husband and my anniversary!

First off, it's odd that reviewers feel compelled to talk about earlier incarnations in the space -- Corton and Montrachet. It's like saying a classical pianist who last played Beethoven on a Bosendorfer should not be doing Bach on a Steinway. This is a fresh and novel approach to fine dining -- casual and upbeat, but none the less refined. The décor is certainly laid back, but casual looks can be deceiving. The cutlery is Christofle and stemware and other accoutrements are all elegant and fine. The food is simply wonderful. It's an explosion of flavors, supreme inventiveness, passion for ingredients and flair for composition. We started with three courses and were compelled to up it to four. We wanted to taste everything!

If you can get a reservation...Batard lives up to the critic's hype. I would describe the food as transcendent. The space is beautiful without being stuffy, and the staff was friendly, attentive, and extremely professional, but no question the food is the star. Though I was disappointed the short rib appetizer had run out, we enjoyed the octopus, tuna, and (WOW) corn soup immensely (they allowed us to swap an extra app for dessert on the 3 course dinner option). I checked frequently for available times on a Thursday evening. With some persistence, I was able to get a table 9:30. The only service negative was that I was on the restaurant's wait list for that night, and they never called me even though clearly a table had opened up.

Bit better than Corton, but the room basically remains the same, clinical and impersonal and if you're a couple seated in the area with tables for two privacy is lacking, as other diners seated next to you jump into the conversation. No complaints about the service. And the food was good. As it stands Drew Nieporent's Montrachet will never be equaled.

Quite a comedown from Corton, the previous restaurant at the location. Food -- the veal and monkfish entrees, for example -- is good but not great and in too small portions. The octopus pastrami appetizer scores for its inventiveness (making octopus look like headcheese and taste like pastrami) but, with any real octopus flavor lost, it's a disappointment. Also, for the food being served, some less expensive wines should be available.

Dinner at Batard was delicious. We had three courses. Chilled corn soup was outstanding as was the pork belly. For dessert they sent out a little scoop of mint ice cream with a candle for my boyfriend's birthday. Portion sizes were perfect for a three or four course menu. Cocktails were well done as well. Milk punch was the perfect pre-dinner drink. We can't wait to go back!

We went to Batard with very high expectations remembering many memorable meals at Montrachet in years past. Batard was 'excellent' at times, but 'just good' at others, & unfortunately never rose to the hype that surrounded it's opening. Neither did it rise to the level of the Montrachet of old. The mains that we enjoyed (veal and duck) were much better than the starters which were often overthought. When time came for dessert, the much praised Milk Bread was dry and just run of the mill. On a positive note, the service was very friendly & quite efficient. Please know that Batard is not a bad restaurant. I think it has the potential to be so much more than it showed us the night that we dined there. I hope that it rises to that challenge.

This is one of the rare new restaurants that deserves repeated visits. Considering the high bar of new york restaurants the few notable new places we try although usually good don't merit being added to our repertoire. Batard does. We each ordered different dishes and each one was great certainly 3 or 4 star level. That was 8 different things. The service was wonderful but very low key and casual. Very grown up. The ambiance is especially comfortable with tables very well spaced. All in all a welcome new place in a very historic space.

Corton was a budget buster, but Batard is much more affordable-and if I'm not mistaken, the portions have grown!. The wine list offers some affordable yet great wine choices, and I'm glad the all-white look is gone. Service of course was impeccable. All in all a really nice night out. Drew doesnt dissappoint!

Having been to the restaurant's previous incarnations (Corton and Montrachet) we were really expecting to be wowed. Oddly, the sterile decor that was a negative at Corton remains but without the amazing cuisine. Don't get me wrong. The food is good and there are no complaints about the flavors, presentation or creativity. But there isn't much soul. Prices are fair for the quality and cocktails are inventive. But we had 4 separate wait staff asking if we were ready to order, if we wanted something else to drink or if we wanted dessert. It seems none had spoken to the other. My duck was perfect (unlike previous complaints of being rubbery) and the corn/scallop soup was excellent. The bill was incorrect so be sure to check the addition. - Rob

Batard's space was most recently occupied by Corton, a luxury restaurant. Today, the interior doesn't look terribly different, but the linen tablecloths are gone, and prices are slightly lower, though not by much. In fact, service seemed a bit rushed, apparently because at the lower price, Batard needs to turn over its tables more quickly. As for the food, my wife and I thought our appetizers were good, and everything else was exceptional. The delectable entrees and desserts will likely get us to return -- but we'll expect to be finished with dinner in less than than an hour.

We went with our sharing restaurant friends. We taste as much as we can and everything was beyond words. The halibut was the least interesting. The duck and veal were extraordinary. The pork belly a bit less so and the halibut more ordinary. The appetizers were each fantastic and the milk bread pudding indescribably delicious. My husband, a major chocolate lover, literally swooned over the chocolate sable cake. Fabulous. The service people dear and Drew Nieporant a welcome return.

We were greeted by Drew himself, who worked his restaurant like a man on a mission. We were seated immediately. The restaurant is bright & unpretentious, an easy fit for this Tribeca location. The food is off the chart fabulous. Tuna, halibut, schnitzel, salad, wine(s). Each a superb preparation. Service is happy & attentive. The price for this near perfect experience is not for the budget minded, but definitely worth the price of admission.

I went there as part of a party of four this past Saturday night. The menu is short and sweet, and I love that they have the flexibility of letting you choose how to configure your tasting experience. The food was exceptional. Perfectly cooked, beautifully presented, and exceptionally delicious. Everyone at the table had something different, and we all loved our dishes. The service is good, if not quite perfect. It felt like we had two or three servers, not quite sure who was supposed to be our main person. One of the runners, I think the only female, was a bit brusque when delivering one of my courses. That was the only flaw in the experience. Overall fantastic, and I look forward to going back to try out other menu selections.

We had foodie friends visiting from overseas so we decided to give Bâtard another try. This is our 2nd visit, we enjoyed our 4 courses with the exception of 'Octopus' (too salty and sour) overall, food was good. But here is the main problem... We noted slow service in our first visit... But service this time got so much worse! We waived our hands and turned our head to get attention of any staff just to get our first drink order... Nothing, no staff or waiters in sight. Finally, It took us 15 mins to get our drinks and another 15 mins to get our food order...( Our waiter has a stern and serious face..) Enough said. We hope the restaurant will find a way to train its staff and improve service quality. Until then we shall return..

I had been to Corton on several occasions and was eager to try Batard. I agree with others that Batard is loud, but easy enough to ignore once you get talking yourself. We had a great leisurely meal, 3 hrs, and never felt rushed. We had the 4 course option; but be aware if you want two "entrees" you have to pick one of the pastas. Not the end of the world, but not what I was expecting. I had the Yellowfin Tuna (my favorite dish of the night - the quinoa was really crunchy with a great texture), the Sockeye Salmon (lovely and fresh), the Black Olive Tortellini (nothing special), and the NY Strip (excellent). I had the cheese plate for dessert, which was fine. We enjoyed everything and I would return again when the budget allows.
