A word from Bâtard
Drew Nieporent’s long commitment to Tribeca continues in the space that housed the legendary Montrachet and Corton. Chef/partner Markus Glocker’s modern European menu reflects his Austrian heritage and diverse experiences (Gordon Ramsay, Charlie Trotter). Dishes like Octopus “Pastrami,” Roasted Beets Linzer and Veal Tenderloin “Tramezzini” are inventive and delicious. Diners may order two ($55), three ($65) or four courses ($75) - fixed prices that represent excellent value.

Managing partner John Winterman, former longtime maître d’ at Daniel, welcomes you to a relaxed setting warmed by golden light and cozy banquettes. The wine list highlights the best of Burgundy; cocktails are expertly crafted.

Very good experience. Very good dinner overall, with the entrees (duck breast and venison) being particularly outstanding both for concept and execution. Sommelier suggested a very good and enjoyable wine. Very reasonable prices - considering the level of the restaurant - providing good value for quality. One of the high points so far this year.

The food was excellent and the staff were all super friendly. Everything we ordered had its own uniqueness and flavor. The waiter recommended the lobster appetizer and I was surprised to find that was actually my least favorite dish. Everything else was just wonderful!

I came here with my boyfriend for dinner on a Monday night. You will definitely need a reservation, as the place filled up quickly, even on a Monday. The sommelier was knowledgeable and helped us pick a great bottle from their impressive selection. We went with the 3 course option, which was more than enough food. Between the two of us, we had the octopus "pastrami," the short rib terrine, the branzino, and their special - a chicken schnitzle dish. We both had the milk bread for dessert. Everything was great, but I definitely liked the octopus and the chicken schnitzle the best. The atmosphere was casual, but the room was a little loud, and like every NYC restaurant, the tables were packed in very close together. It would have been nice to have a little bit more space from our fellow diners, but overall, it was a great experience.

We have a repertoire of high end restaurants that we go back to over and over. To this we add new places that seem interesting. Very few of then new places make it into said repertoire. Batard is one of the very few. We have been back for a second visit and it was just as good as the first.. It is good in every way. I guess everyone feels the same way as it is one of the few places packed by 6:30 for the early seating.

  • A little disappointing

We read raving reviews about Batard, so I had very high expectations... very very high expectations. Unfortunately, it did not match up to it. To get me wrong, it is good, mainly the appetizers. But my entire table of 4 got disappointing with their entrees. The gentlemen took the duck - my beloved one who loves duck did not finish his plate (when he eats 2 breasts at home...). My friend had the venison loin, and not only portions were ridiculous (we could not stop laughing for 5 minutes), but although very well excuted, it lacked invention. Yet, probably the best dish on the table. I had the branzino. Nothing special about it. Really nothing. Service is nice, but it can sometimes be hard to get a bit of attention... But it is very trendy and they are all so nice! BUT please, do not clear my plate when I am still chewing my last bite. We shared 2 deserts for 4: Black Forest and Milk Bread... Milk Bread is way too sweet, and the Black Forest is not what you expect is you come from Eastern France... but it is ok. All in one, it was good, but not outstanding. Not sure to be back.

We were 4 people and had the 4 course dinner. We didn't have to have dessert (I am diabetic). Each course was delicious. The pastrami octopus was outstanding as was the artichoke. My duck was out of this world and the sweetbread was yummy. We all loved what we had. We were celebrating a birthday and our server unobtrusively brought over a candle. Very nice.

Food lives up to the hype. Thoughtful flavor combinations, acceptable portions and perfect temperatures. Decor seemed dated, lighting was bright and it was a bit chilly. Service was sterile and initially rushed but settled down after we ordered...not a big deal but a little disappointing given the price point. Still, food alone was worth the trip.

I took my CEO and an important client here for a Tuesday night dinner. While service was a bit slower than ideal at times, this was overshadowed by the food. They offer an array of unique and phenomenally prepared dishes with reasonably* priced 2, 3, and 4 course options at a $80/head before booze.. *(reasonable for the deliciousness of food and Michelin star to back it up.) Highly recommend it if you're looking to impress

The ambiance is pleasant and relaxing. The service is professional, neither intrusive nor neglectful. Course pacing was good. Nice wine list. We had 4 appetizers (cauliflower soup, beet salad, lobster, octopus) -- all were very good, with creative garnitures. We also enjoyed the bronzino, duck breast and venison loin entrees - all excellent, perfect temperature, well seasoned, sauced and garnished. The deserts were pleasing to the eye although they were not equal to the standards set by the first two courses.

My boyfriend and I had a very enjoyable dinner here on our last visit to NYC. The decor is modern but not stark and the crowd energetic. The food is very good and priced appropriately. The wine sommelier was able to help with a couple of good suggestions on burgundies that were drinking well. Good experience. We will go back.

We saw the review in the NYtimes and decided to see if it was all the review said. The short answer is "yes, and more". The room is lovely- a bit lively- we had reservations and were seated immediately. The service was impeccable, there was always someone aware of us to answer questions and all of our needs. The menu was inventive and creative. All of our dishes came out perfectly and were delicious ( as was the wine) .i cannot say enough about this gem.

We're so glad we found BATARD. The welcome was warm and immediate and the service throughout was attentive without being overbearing. The menu was not overloaded: it had just enough temptations to make a choice challenging. None of our four diners were disappointed. The appetizers, main course, and desserts were all delicious. And the price for such a 3-course feast was fair.

Our two-top was in an odd place, at the junction of two aisles, with a column immediately behind the back of one chair. Very different from the familiar banquette/table/chair arrangement. That said, the food was very good indeed, and the service was warm and personal, without a touch of pretension that too often inhabits places with steep prices. The 2-course-for-$55 may not sound like a lot--and it isn't--but have two glasses of wine each and, with tip, you are easily over $200 for the evening. There is a very small bar on the right as you enter which, unaccountably, made me wonder if there was a separate bar menu. The one thing that isn't memorable about Batard is the decor, but then you can't eat the decor.

It's been a long time since I can truly say I was blown away by a meal in NY. We did the 4 course menu including dessert and cheese and everything was perfect. The Canadian Lobster starter was the most tender lobster I've ever enjoyed, and the carrot fondue was delicious. My friend's octopus pastrami was unique. The duck breast was tender and flavorful and the accompanying mushroom crepe was a standout. For dessert the caramelized milk bread with brown butter ice cream was unlike anything I've tasted before. The sommelier recommended an excellent and reasonable wine from their extensive Burgundy list. If I had to list one complaint it's that sometimes it was difficult to get the server's attention, but when we did service was excellent.

We had a late dinner at Batard, the place was completely full, extremely noisy but with a nice vibe. Service was uncoordinated, 3 different waiters asked within 5 minutes if we wanted a wine list, 3 others asked if they can recommend a wine. Great to have somebody to ask, but too much is too much. It took about 1 minute after ordering that our starter was served, which clearly gives the impression that dishes are not prepared a la minute. While preparations were tasty with good ingredients, most dishes were protein heavy and not really balanced. After 45 minutes we had finessed our desserts, speed is certainly a virtue at Batard. We like the concept but there are plenty of toothing issues to be dealt with.

Was expecting a much better dinner based on reviews on New York magazines. Octopus starter was wonderful, but the show ends there. Strudel main course was with hardly any filling, not much of a main course. The halibut was well prepared and adequate portion. The pear desert was tiny, one slice of pear and not much else. For the money go elsewhere.

In order to insure that I got a table for my girlfriend's birthday at the time I wanted, I made the reservation at 12:03am, exactly 1 month before. I was shocked to find that there was nothing available between 7pm and 8:45pm, so I made the reservation for 6:45. What was interesting was that by 7:30 (the time I would have preferred) the restaurant was 1/3 empty, with 6 available tables for two, and stayed that way until we left at 8:45pm. Whatever that was about, it was odd and annoying. The appetizers were pretty good, but the main course, chicken schnitzel, which was recommended online and by our server, was tasteless. When asked how it was, we told them it was disappointing. They gave us ONE free desert, the milkbread, which was so-so.

The food was very good. The service needs a little polishing and finesse. We started with the Rutabega soup, the octopus pastrami and beet salad. The soup With the lavender croutons was fantastic as was the octopus pastrami. Not so sure on the beet salad, it was missing something. The main course Atlantic Halbut, roasted Monkfish and Pork belly were all fabulous and enjoyed by all. On to dessert, blood orange and caramelized milk bread were extremely tasty, especially the caramelized bread, to die for. Definitely will return.

The food was very good, the wine, excellent and well-priced. Drew Nierpont himself stopped at our table for a chat and to pour some wine. We will go again. It's a trendy spot. Batard is an outstanding restaurant that serves inventive dishes. Chef Marcus, who worked in London with Guy Ramsay, is very creative and consistently provides excellent cuisine. The Michelin star that Batard obtained last week is well deserved. I highly recommend Batard.

I still miss Montrachet but Batard i s well worth a visit. The pale yellow walls give the room a warm glow. General feel is low key. I feel it could use a little jolt of vibrancy or something. The maitre'd who greeted us was somewhat aloof and not that friendly even when we mentioned we had been at Montrachet many times and had eaten at Corton. Oh well. The server was excellent and the food very good. I would give it an 8 out of 10. The most outstanding dish was the veal. worth going just to have it. well balanced tastes, excellent flavoring and spices. wonderful food presentation. the milk cake dessert is incredible. delicious cocktails (strong). definitely like it better than Corton.

After Pete Wells wrote an elated review of Batard, I made a reservation. I don't know which Batard it is that Wells experienced, but it wasn't the same one I visited for dinner. The room is cold (as is the service), the tables are too tall or the chairs are too low, the food is well presented but not especially delicious or memorable, and a $10 supplement for the poorly executed "rack" of lamb, which is nothing more than a single rib served with overcooked chunks of lamb in a ceramic pot, is completely unnecessary. Doesn't help that you can't see what's in the pot because the tables are too tall. Desserts are fantastic and the sommelier knows his admittedly very good wine list. This isn't a three star place yet, not even a little bit.

The food was seasonal, local and sublime: gorgeous chilled corn soup with scallops, the duck breast was succulent with a decadent duck liver mousse that makes you cry! Polished servers were the perfect complement to a modern yet warm setting, until a table of oneophiles began to take precedence over our table of two. We enjoyed 4 courses, all impeccable. The tuna appetizer was one of the most interesting preparations of what is sometimes an overdone fish, with intricately seasoned loin segments, chopped fatty tartare, and gingery accents. The lobster was another winner, and the various uses of the buttery meat made for extremely interesting eating. Mains included the schnitzel (greaseless yet juicy) and the monkfish with perfectly textured, mushroom-infused house made pasta. The icing on the cake was the fromage blanc, light, airy, and just a bit sweet.
