Drew Nieporent’s long commitment to Tribeca continues in the space that housed the legendary Montrachet and Corton. Chef/partner Markus Glocker’s modern European menu reflects his Austrian heritage and diverse experiences (Gordon Ramsay, Charlie Trotter). Dishes like Octopus “Pastrami,” Roasted Beets Linzer and Veal Tenderloin “Tramezzini” are inventive and delicious. Diners may order two ($55), three ($65) or four courses ($75) - fixed prices that represent excellent value. Managing partner John Winterman, former longtime maître d’ at Daniel, welcomes you to a relaxed setting warmed by golden light and cozy banquettes.   • "I went there as part of a party of four this past Saturday night. The menu is short and sweet, and I love that they have the flexibility of letting you choose how to configure your tasting experience. The food was exceptional. Perfectly cooked, beautifully presented, and exceptionally delicious. Everyone at the table had something different, and we all loved our dishes. The service is good, if not quite perfect. It felt like we had two or three servers, not quite sure who was supposed to be our main person. One of the runners, I think the only female, was a bit brusque when delivering one of my courses. That was the only flaw in the experience. Overall fantastic, and I look forward to going back to try out other menu selections."

  • "We had foodie friends visiting from overseas so we decided to give Bâtard another try. This is our 2nd visit, we enjoyed our 4 courses with the exception of 'Octopus' (too salty and sour) overall, food was good. But here is the main problem... We noted slow service in our first visit... But service this time got so much worse! We waived our hands and turned our head to get attention of any staff just to get our first drink order... Nothing, no staff or waiters in sight. Finally, It took us 15 mins to get our drinks and another 15 mins to get our food order...( Our waiter has a stern and serious face..) Enough said. We hope the restaurant will find a way to train its staff and improve service quality. Until then we shall return.."

  • "I had been to Corton on several occasions and was eager to try Batard. I agree with others that Batard is loud, but easy enough to ignore once you get talking yourself. We had a great leisurely meal, 3 hrs, and never felt rushed. We had the 4 course option; but be aware if you want two "entrees" you have to pick one of the pastas. Not the end of the world, but not what I was expecting. I had the Yellowfin Tuna (my favorite dish of the night - the quinoa was really crunchy with a great texture), the Sockeye Salmon (lovely and fresh), the Black Olive Tortellini (nothing special), and the NY Strip (excellent). I had the cheese plate for dessert, which was fine. We enjoyed everything and I would return again when the budget allows."

  • "Went here for dinner. We had the yellowfin tuna, maine lobster and octopus appetizers, followed by the branzino and the strip loin, and ended with the caramelized milk bread. Everything was delicious and beautifully plated. The service was excellent and the place was nice."

  • "There are very few restaurants in Manhattan where you can enjoy a 4 course tasting menu for under $100 and this is one of them. The food was delicious and service on par as well. The only aspect that was lacking was the bar. I ordered two different cocktails and both were bad...it had more to do with the balance of the ingredients than my personal taste as these are drinks i have had variations o themf before. I am sure they are more used to serving wine but they need to step up their bar game. Would return for the food!"

  • "Dining room has all the warmth of a college dining hall and food is not much better. While menu certainly looks promising and seems to offer a fair share of luxury elements, the actual results lack the clarity and sharpness of flavors that one expects at this price point. Starters suggest that they have been sitting in the fridge and main courses, such as the strip steak, are totally devoid of flavor. Considering the restaurant's wine pedigree, it is instructive that the vast majority of the bridge and tunnel crowd appears to opt for the fancy cocktails instead."

  • "The atmosphere is warm and inviting. It feels right to order a good bottle of wine to pair with the tasty, elegant plates of food. Everything went without a hitch until I decided to order the "cheese from our cart". I envisioned past wonderful meals in France ending with a selection of cheeses presented from a cart. Instead, two different waiters asked if I liked, aft, hard or smelly cheeses. I thought, "Oh, they don't really have a cart". Then, while I ate my cheese, I watched another table getting the full presentation and explanation from a waitress wheeling a cart to their table. It was disappointing and felt insulting."

The bread is hot and delicious and the halibut is just the right flavor and seasoning. Also the portions are not to big and just right.   • "We were intrigued and excited by the food critics' reviews, so we went with raised expectations. We don't really care about ambiance, but that is definitely not a strong point here. Service was unobtrusively attentive. The lobster starter was just OK, tuna fared a little better. I found the veal tenderloin quite good, though not super tasty. My husbsnd had the same, but said he liked the pork tenderloin I cook at home much better ... Very good bread. WeDessert was fine: Sacher torte, Caramelized milk bread, but sweets are not our priority when we eat out. Price is reasonable. At 6:00 PM it was quiet, became bearably noisy by the time we left. While we would not rave about the experience in general, we would say Bâtard is worth a try."

And the carmelized milk bread....Well if you like the crunchy top on a creme brulee you will have it and more. Soooo great. The sommelier, Josh, was extremely knowledgeable and took lots of time to answer all my questions. It was our 21st anniversary and they brought us an additional scoop of stawberry sorbet with a candle and happy anniversary written on the plate. It was so extraordinary for them to read what I had mentioned on our open table notes."

  • "I've been to all the incarnations of this wonderful space, from Montrachet to Corton to Batard, and Batard honors its predecessors while being fresh and original. The Austrian themed highlights of the menu are a new dimension and a welcome one. The food is artfully presented, innovative and very satisfying. Not art for art sake as we sometimes felt at Corton. The corn bisque that was a special on the menu was a surprising hit, which got universal acclaim from all at our table of 6. The entrees were all delicious, fresh and unique, and the deserts stole the show. We sampled all the desserts and loved them all. This reincarnation is a real gem--we will gladly return to over and over for both romantic and special group occasions."

  • "The food was fab, with the exception that the Adam Platt praised lamb bacon was so minuscule that we almost missed it on our plate! Truly! The cheese course was banal and the pre-cut bread, which wasn't toasted, tasted stale. Otherwise we enjoyed our food. But the dinner was marred by the noise level. We had to shout to hear each other (a party of two) over the noise of adjoining tables. Since this was a problem at Corton, too, we don't expect a resolution. It's a shame, because it's a factor that will skew our desire to return and the restaurant truly is a gem....."

  • "Outstanding food and a great menu - Chef Glocker is one of the best chefs in NYC today imho. The plates are well composed, beautiful, have acidic balance, multiple textures and great flavors - solid all around. I followed Chef Glocker from his days at The London in NYC - which had a much nicer dining room (but higher prices). The only negative is that the dining room is a bit tight and the noise level can be a bit high. But the food will keep us coming back..."

  • "Took my boyfriend here for his birthday, was really excited since I enjoyed dining at the former Corton but heard that this was same quality food with a more relaxed environment. We were seated right away for our 9PM Saturday reservation, but then waited about 10 minutes to receive a menu, and about 20 or so additional minutes for our server to greet us to take our drink orders and talk about the menu. We went for the 4-courses. I had the pea soup, lobster appetizer, rabbit entree, and the 'off the menu' chocolate cake. The pea soup was the only noteable dish, lobster, rabbit & chocolate cake were pretty forgettable. My boyfriend had the steak for entree, that was also good, and the rest was forgettable."

  • "The food was excellent and timed between courses appropriately. Wine was poured when glasses got low. Staff was friendly. Would want a better description of what's on the plate when food is dropped next time, most courses were placed and offered a very vague "salmon", "pea soup" not enough when served intricate dishes. Was offered a "I'm not really sure what happened" excuse when their was a course mishap. Should and could have been handled differently. Assume all the negatives will work them selves out as the restaurant evolves past the first few months. Will def. go back and try again."

  • "Marvelous restaurant. Great food, ambiance and service. The room is beautiful with super lighting. Walls are beautiful. Very very romantic feel. Service could not be better. Everything taken care of and never intrusive. Food was wonderful. Two great starters. Heirloom tomato salad fabulous and roasted beet salad equally excellent. The main courses were the chicken schnitzel and monkfish. Again excellent and for dessert the chocolate cake with ice cream, whipped cream and sour cream. Second dessert was caramelized bread cake. For wine a bottle of Chablis and for an aperitif a kir. Very very highly recommended. Prices are $55 for 2 courses and $65 for 3. Not so high considering the overall experience. We really loved it and booked in August."

  • "To be fair, I have to give high marks to Betard, though if it becomes too popular, getting a reservation will be difficult. The food is wonderful: first course, lobster and octopus; second course, branzino and schnitzel. Drinks: ol dirty batard (similar to a Manhattan), glasses of Riesling and pinot noir. Lots of staff, seamless service. We didn't feel rushed, but the time between courses could have been a little more. The menu is limited and I hope there will be periodic, seasonal changes, though everything on the current menu sounds worth trying."
