  • "At first we were a little disappointed with the original host with a non-welcoming greeting and for mentioning we would need to wait an hour beyond our reservation. We were suggested to go to the bar. We were put off and almost left, but I thought I would give the hostess another chance. As it turned out she had left and there was another hostess that seated us immediately. After the little hiccup, we had a great waiter, music, food and even better drinks. Recommend making a reservation as the place fills quickly and it is hot outside. Enjoy."

  • "We had reservations for 6 at 9:15 Saturday. First time there. Drinks over priced and very small. Have to say the list is creative, but deflated my excitement once we received them. Hostess was very polite. Looked at the clock, it took us literally 45 minutes after we seated before the waiter came by to take our food order. Food was seriously pretentious, overpriced for what you got, and overall underwhelming. Over cooked, bland, and not impressive, especially for foodies. Band was great, not all of it was brazilian, but was still good. Place has a nice charm, spacious and not over crowded.If I go there again, it will be only for the music. I'd be eating and drinking somewhere else."

  • "A friend recommended this place for an end-of-season office celebration. It was just right. The restaurant serves great Latin American tapas and phenomenal cocktails. Our waiter, Rigo, was continually attentive and very helpful. With an eclectic selection of meats, vegetable dishes, seafood and snacks, you can sample just what you want and make the meal fit everybody's tastes. I'll be heading here again soon."

  • "This was a business lunch. The food, presentation and service were all good. I expected a little more flavor or spice - not heat necessarily - as it is a Latin place. The food was good just not as 'punched up' as I was expecting. The ambience was perfect - we were able to hold a discussion without constantly having to escalate our voices as you have to do in some places. All around a good experience and I will return."

  • "We did Sunday brunch. We ordered two of the specialty brunch cocktails and were advised that they were not making them that day. Okay we made alternative selections but the specialty drink menu was quite small so found it odd that they declined to prepare two of them. We ordered a salad and were advised that chef was not making that today. We were wondering if we had made a poor choice in dining he. We persevered and made some additional selections. They were all available what's more they were outstanding! Batanga is significantly above the other Houston tapas houses. Each of our selections were freshly prepared with excellent ingredients. We will return!"

  • "I chose Batanga to dine with friends for my birthday. I got there by the time and there was no table ready, my friends were finding spots for parking and by the time half of them got there the table was not ready. The crew were really kind but it kinda bothered me the table was not ready by the time we were there. Aside of it, the food was great and the live music not that bad. Of course i am coming back :D"

  • "We went there on a Saturday night, had reservations, the hostess was not friendly our welcoming, the server was terrible, not friendly at all just took our order and never came back to check on us. I had to wave him down to try to get him to refill our drinks and for the check. Overall our dining experience was awful, very disappointed."

  • "I had high hopes and booked lunch with a friend on a Saturday. There were about 8 customers in the entire place, and the World Cup was on the TV. The volume was DEAFENING, and for no reason since there was no one there talking much. I had to ask to have the sound turned down, and even then it was too loud. Food was mediocre. Will not go back."

  • "My wife and I had a great time at Batanga's last week for dinner. We ordered the 6 tapas plate which was more than enough for the two of us. Every one of them was fantastic. Our favorite one was the fish tacos - one order comes with three fish tacos that are very tasty. Ambience was nice, but it seemed unusually loud based on the number of people there, but not to the point where we couldn't hear each other. Service was great. Wine selection is very good, but the draft beer selection is lacking. Definitely recommend."

  • "A group of friends and came to Botanga before a show at the Alley Theater. The food was amazing, the atmosphere was great, and the service was wonderful. We actually enjoyed it so much we came back after the show for some drinks and desert. I highly recommend Botanga and we plan on being back very soon."

  • "A wonderful meal that was blunted by the overwhelming salt content. We ordered 11 tapas and virtually all were oversalted. It's a shame that my party, wife, daughter and grandchildren (all foodies) all commented on how good the basic food and seasonings were, except for the overwhelming salt content. Verdict: excellent service, nice outdoor scene, interesting and varied choices...hey chef, you are in great shape, just bench the salt!!!"

  • "Had lunch for my first experience. Server was not knowledgable of the menu and was slow. Had the kale salad, chicken and fish tacos, and eggplant fries. Kale salad was best. Fish tacos were bland. Chicken tacos were literally nothing more than chicken in a corn tortilla. Presentation could be improved. Not sure I'd be in a rush to return."

  • "Poor service and mediocre food. We selected 10 or so items and the mushroom croquettes were the best of the lot. When asked what the house red was, the server replied 'savignon blanc'. When told that was probably a white wine, he said he would ask the bartender. He returned and again said it was 'savignon blanc'. We went with the house 'red' anyway, and it was quite acceptable."

  • "Dinner at Batanga's was a disappointment. We had the kale salad, ribs, chicken satay, and the calamari. Each one was unremarkable and lacked any memorable flavors that you expect with small tapas. The clamari was particularly bad as it was overcooked and greasy. Batanga's was recommended to us so maybe we happened to be there on a bad night, however, with four of four dishes found lacking or just plain bad, I can't see giving it another try, especially with so many other good alternatives in the Market Square area."

They have a great variety of tapas size portions - whether you prefer beef, chicken, fish or vegetarian, you can find something on this menu. The drinks are always unique and fabulous. Don't skip the Pan con chocolate for dessert - the combination works so well!"

  • "First time here last Thursday night. Loved it! Tapas were delicious, drinks wonderful, great outdoor area. We sat outside but we noticed that there was a Latin band playing inside - they were very good. We decided to return another night to enjoy the music. The pork ribs and bacon-wrapped dates were standouts. Will def be back!"

  • "Last night was my first visit to this restaurant. I found the restaurant to be a great find. I will definitely return. It has a great outdoor area; not too hot in the evening of a 90 degree day. The food selection was great. The waiter was very helpful on drink and food recommendations, including advice on not ordering too many Tapas."

  • "The patio of this place is amazing, shaded and always fairly quiet. The HH drink menus is really great, and they also have cheap tapas from 4 to 7. However, it is was pretty bad. We ordered the chicken skewers, hummus and plantans. If I went back again (which i would becuase the atmosphere is so awesome) I'd just get drinks and the hummus. It wasn't killer hummus by any means, but it was decent, and that compliments drinks nicely. "

  • "Reservation for 4 was @8:30 we arrived 45 min early. With 75% of empty tables, hostess ready to seat us as walk-ins. I mentioned OTable reservation and all of a sudden we were told we will need to wait until 8:30! Ran into friends that walked-in 1 min after us and were seated immediately! Disappointed in their seating policy!"

  • "This was our second annual Birthday celebration at Batanga and a fun time was had by all! The Tapas selection was fabulous - especially the dates wrapped in bacon and the crispy calamari. Giselle was singing on this occasion and she sings an impressive selection of music from Brazil to Pop. John, waiter extraordinaire, took especially good care of us and we had the pleasure of visiting with owner, Brian Fasthoff, too. Next on our Batanga agenda: their brunch on the patio!!!"

  • "My buddy and I headed down here for dinner but wow, did not realize that they closed the kitchen so early, maybe 11 pm or so. We started out with a bottle of wine and chit chatted for a while. By the time we were ready to order, the kitchen had closed already and their full menu was no longer being served. They do offer a very short menu after that, mostly fried finger food but not what I had anticipated ordering. I would've liked to have been told that the kitchen closed before the restaurant did but no one mentioned this at all. Overall, not too bad but I do recommend coming in early and ordering before the kitchen closes."

  • "What a fantastic find! I wrote Moderate for noise level simply because the outdoor patio is next to a busy road. It's not quiet, but definitely not loud. The patio was full, but tables are spaced far enough apart that you can still have an private conversation. The service was exceptional. They were very attentive and helped us understand the best menu options. It was a lunch for 2 and I really appreciated the server telling us 4 plates would leave us feeling comfortable (not overstuffed). Great advice. The EMPANADA DE CARNE and CAUILFLOWER & CHAYOTE CAZUELA are a must! Will definitely be back with friends to experience the live music and dinner scene!"
