Diner Reviews
  • "The appetizer and desserts were VERY GOOD. The main course (hanger steak) tough, and the salad extremely uninteresting… I would go back and try something else for the main course"

  • "We had a recent sat dinner outdoors in the patio. The food and setting we're wonderful. I was disappointed in the service as I'd eaten previously at Bastille and thought the service first rate. It seemed, because we were on the patio the service was more "relaxed" . Our waitress was nice but there was a language gap and she didn't seem as knowledgeable about the food on the menu. When I asked for a taste of a wine, I was served a 3 oz glass and charged 5.95."

  • "The outdoor dining is the best in Old Town. The service exceptional, especially thanks to the very charming and professional Khadeja. The cold melon soup was delicious and the mussels cooked to perfection is a delightful sauce."

  • "This out third time at this restaurant and have not been disappointed. Highly recommended!"

  • "Been to Bastille many times for lunch and dinner. Really like it. Great food. But, this time the menu's gotten weird. Fish choices were sardines and calamari. Not my favorites. One odd salad. No chicken. I'll check the menu before we go back for lunch."

  • "I've been dining at Bastille for years and have never once been disappointed. It is a sophisticated yet cozy, friendly, exceptional gem on the Alexandria dining scene. I wouldn't call it kid-friendly, but as a place to have superb food with adult conversation, there's none better."
    Dined on 7/16/2014
  • "All the food is to die for. Service a bit rough at time, but efficient."
    Dined on 7/14/2014
  • "As usual the food is well prepared - the reason I keep coming back. But the service is just fair, the staff needs to interact with the guests and upsell! No offer of a cocktail before dinner. No offer for another glass of wine when a glass is empty. No offer for a coffee or Apéritifs with desert. It gives the dinner the feeling they just want to turn the table quickly. This is too nice of a place with great chefs to have this kind of dining experience."

  • "I ate at Bastille when the restaurant had a special pre fixe dinner in observance of Bastille Day. The $39 three-course dinner was a great value. The waiter was especially helpful and brought us extra silverware so we could taste each other's dishes. After ordering, we asked him which wines he would recommend to go with our entrees. He not only recommended two very good wines, but also explained why they went particularly well with the dishes we had ordered."

  • "Bastille continues its tradition of fine and precise tastes, exclusive wine offerings, attentive service and ideal French countryside ambience!!! Always a memorable pleasure to dine there!"

  • "Spectacular, tight dining area, very quiet outside."

  • "Nearly everything was excellent except for the planes going overhead. We were seated outdoors. And it's a bit pricey. But if you have the bucks to spend, it's a great place."

  • "Visited the restaurant a couple of times, a few years ago. A lot has changed. Ambience improved, everything else ... not so much. We picked: Moullard Duck confit, grilled VA peaches, Honey lavender gastrique sauce, $16 It was a small portion of duck meat with bone, sprinkled with corn (possibly GMO). A few symbolic micro potatoes added with orphans of veggie family. Depressing to look at. Desert: Valrhona chocolate pot de crème*, blueberry compote, crème Chantilly $9 It was really glamorized chocolate pudding. Really, who do they think we are?"

  • "Superior service, delicious food and great ambiance. My guest and I had the Smoked Salmon & Egg Benedict. Absolutely delicious and the service is always top notch at Bastille. Check it out!"

  • "Wonderful outdoor dining! Delightful menu. The cold pea soup was delicious and the duck confit excellent. The mussels in a new recipe were the best."

  • "I am starting to become recognized due to my frequent visits to this neighborhood gem. The food is delicious and fresh, the service friendly and understanding of the tone at the table. I would highly recommend making a reservation since it is a cozy restaurant. My friend and I did the wine pairing 4 course dinner. It was well done!"

  • "The Hidden Gem of Alexandria. Great food and service and a relaxed atmosphere. I particularly enjoy it for lunch. Easy to park and usually easy to get a reservation."

  • "We visited Bastille for the second time and we both find this a relaxing restaurant with outstanding food. The presentation and preparation are just great! The service was terrific as the waiter was attentive but not overly attentive. I was only a bit disappointed there wasn't a chocolate choice in the dessert menu."

  • "Had a family dinner in Bastille on Sunday. It was our first time there and we were impressed! The atmosphere was nice, very casual and relax. We tried the Sunday dinner menu - all dishes were really delicious, especially the foie gras and the snails. The services are professional too. Will definitely come back again."

  • "We had another excellent dinner at Bastille on a Friday night. We arrived 5 mins before our reservation and we were seated promptly. The noise level was moderate to low and it was easy to have a conversation at our table. We had three people in our group who had not eaten at Bastille before so the waiter explained the menu and options perfectly covering the entire menu and answering all of our questions. The food was excellent and Mark Slater provided excellent wine pairings yet again without breaking our bank accounts. The food, wine and service were excellent and I cannot wait to return to this great place."

  • "Everything was delicious. Waitstaff were very knowledgeable about the food and wines/drinks. The "Bistro Menu" of an appetizer, entree, and dessert was a great value."

  • "VERY MEMORABLE food - seafood and meat. Great wine. Great service. Quiet downtown location, and 'neighbor' has multitude of water fountains to serenade the experience. Perfect recipie for a grand patio dinner w friends. BONUS: All this w/o having to dress to the 9s. LOVE BASTILLE!"

  • "Excellent place for a romantic dinner, both outside and inside. Food quality is also very good, among the best places to go in Alexandria."

  • "My wife enjoyed her duck and the whole meal. My foie gras was excellent as was my cheese plate, but my scallops were over salted and I did not enjoy them at all. Unless you love salt, tell the kitchen to go light on it when you order your food. Service was attentive."

  • "This was the first time I had been to Bastille for lunch and it was quite lovely. The menu was interesting and creative. Everyone in our party of four had something different (hamburger, mussels, eggs benedict) Two in our party chose the prix fixe option and two went al la carte and everyone was happy. I had been to the Bastille once before for dinner and enjoyed it enough to suggest it for brunch. We ate outside and the lovely weather was a bonus."

  • "Bastille was a really lovely setting. Our waiter was fantastic, very attentive and incredibly accommodating. The mussels were tasty but a little on the small side and, though I'm sure they came out warm, they immediately cooled since we were seated in the outdoor dining. The roast duck was delicious but incredibly fatty and wound up upsetting both of our stomachs. In all it was still a nice experience, but if I dine here again I'll probably be trying something else and maybe stick to what I know is safe."

  • "Two of our party were visiting from Rome and appreciate fine food, so we were interested in their opinion of the Bastille's French cuisine. Both enjoyed the soup. One had salmon, and the other had mussels - both were pronounced excellent (and my wife and I agreed). The two were visiting their son and grandson, who were also in our party. The chef prepared the salmon especially for the little boy, who is 5 and doesn't like any seasoning or sauces (yet), and he ate every bit of it. We all very much enjoyed the evening."

  • "I love Bastille, especially for lunch, and especially when the weather cooperates and the outdoor patio is practical. It was too hot and rain threatened on my last visit. But the food was especially good. My friend and I both got the 3 course lunch for $39 with the soup de jour (an excellent chilled asparagus), I had the grilled octopus and squid with grilled vegs which was wonderful, she had the grilled sea bream, I had the almond cake with saffron ice cream, she had the cherry cheesecake ice cream stuffed profiteroles. All fabulous. Plus we had an excellent and well priced Muscadet. Well, okay we had two bottles. We hadn't seen each other in months so lots to talk about and what better place to do it."

  • "Asparagus chilled soup, veal medallions and the pâté were superb."

  • "Food and service were excellent, but was expecting a quiet dinner. Turned out to be full on a Tuesday night (a good thing) but it was very difficult to have a conversation due to the noise level."

  • "Very good food (duck is excellent). Very noisy room - hard to hear. Patio would be nice - but in the 90s the day I went there."
    Dined on 6/17/2014
  • "Loved the food and the offering of a multi-course fixed price option. Mussels were fantastic and a huge serving. Wait was kind of distracted/aloof/too busy. He did not mention upcharge for cheese course, but it was well worth it. Very substantial cheese course. I go here often, nice place."

  • "We celebrate most of our special occassions here. Service and food cannot be bested. Wonderful place."

  • "From the start with fruit and pate, to finish with a wonderful fruit dessert our meal was wonderfully delicious. The service is top notch for attention to detail and timing. Being busy for Father's day did not cause any issue with food or service. We definitely would return to Bastille and recommend it to our friends. Bastille is a little gem tucked into an unpretentious neighborhood. It is very accessible, off the main streets and the parking was good on a Sunday."

  • "The food was good. We took our 2 kids for brunch and they had the grassed burgers and loved them. We had the fixed price 3 course. My salmon was perfect, crispy skinned and lovely and my husband enjoyed his steak and eggs. The ervice was excellent..attentive and discrete but not hanging over you. The only detraction being the location of the restaurant which is next to train tracks and an ugly factory. I guess real estate there was cheap."

  • "I took my husband for Father's Day brunch; we had an absolutely wonderful time outside in the courtyard. We both had Eggs Benedict which was delicious and Parisian Morning, a wonderful drink I had never had. Our waitress Khadija made the morning more fun. This was our second visit, the first time was for my husband's birthday which was also awesome!"
