  • "A warm and inviting restaurant great for a romantic evening for two of dinner with friends. The wait staff are friendly and accomodating and the food is classic French bistro fare."

  • "It was a great experience and the food was fantastic! The ambiance outside is very pleasant and there are great shops right around the corner."

  • "My wife and I celebrated our recent anniversary at Le Bastille and are very happy we picked it for the occasion. We ordered from the 4 course fixed price menu with wine pairing. The food was excellent except the escargot which we both felt was not up the rest of the meal. We liked the wine pairing selections from many parts of France. Our waiter provided efficient and courteous service. and we enjoyed chatting with him.Overall, we found Le Bastille close to 5 star establishment at a moderate price. We very likely dine there again this year."

  • "This is my second time dining at Bastille. As usual the food was delicious and we had a very pleasant person serving us. The nice surprise is that they had a 3-course fixed price lunch menu. I really enjoyed the Asparagus Caesar salad for my appetizer. My entree was a calamari-octopus dish that was delicious and refreshing - it was perfect for a warm day. If you're looking for a great French restaurant in Alexandria, Bastille is the spot."

  • "The best restaurant in Old Town for outdoor dining. Excellent food, exceptional service."
    Dined on 4/12/2014
  • "Bastille is consistently EXCELLENT! The subtle blending of flavors makes each and every course distinctive and delicious! The restaurant will not blow you away with its ambience BUT your taste buds will be blown away by the food!"

  • "We sat outside for dinner and it was pleasant. The tables were kind of rocky cast iron tables without table cloths. All the food was overly sweet. The foie gras was unexpectedly flavorless, and didn't have enough contrasting sides to be interesting, although the strawberries marinated in balsamic vinegar provided a great sour taste. Overall the food was not memorable, and not the treat I was expecting."

  • "Bastille has it all. Great food and wine, classic service in the European style, and charm. Bastille is affordable fine dining. Good value for what you get. Highly recommended for a special night out."

  • "Service and the outdoor dining make Bastille and ideal lunch spot. The food is excellent. The mushroom soup and beet salad were exceptionally tasty appetizers. The cassoulet was just the right size and delicious."

  • "The monthly Bastille Wine dinner is a must try. The restaurant is a small intimate comfortable space tucked into the edge of a neighborhood. The wines were all from the Bordeaux region and the Sommelier was very knowledgeable about each wine. The chef created a divine 6 course menu that paired beautifully with the wines. The service was spectacular, timely, unobtrusive."

  • "We really enjoyed our experience here. We had been in Paris recently and it felt like going back to a favorite neighborhood bistro. Food was great and service good. Cute neighborhood. It made for a lovely evening."

  • "We attended a special Bordeaux wine dinner event. It was immaculate."

  • "We celebrated my birthday at the Bastille. We took advantage of the Sunday Dinner special - 3 courses for $39 each. It was excellent. The three of us enjoyed escargot persillades; the, Soup du jour - a wonderful mushroom bisque; Moules a la creme- mussels steamed in light cream and white wine and the Poisson du Jour, a very savory Bouillabaisse. Dessert consisted of French apple cake with cream fraice ice cream and peanut brittle; chocolate pot de creme and the chef's creme brulee. The meal was a treat and a wonderful respite in our hectic world."

  • "Bastille is a nice neighborhood gem that I would recommend trying when you feel like something a little different. The reason I titled this "Close but..." is that the restaurant just missed on most things. The greeting wasn't unpleasant, but wasn't welcoming either. The service was good, but not attentive. The food is a good portion size and tasty, but attention to detail wasn't there. As an example one of our entrees contained 3 very nicely displayed mussels shells, one of which was empty. My opinion is that if this mussels are to be a statement, it only takes a second to see that it's not just a shell. It could have been more, but it is good value, good food, and worth a try."

  • "When scallops are on the menu, they are always a treat. Mushroom soup was excellent. The service was exemplary. The best outdoor dining spot in Alexanddria."

  • "Nice ambience for a local neighborhood restaurant. The food is not up to par. Good ideas but the execution and preparation not great. Bastille would be better if it focused on healthful, flavorful and fresh recipes. Cod beignets were bland, too much flour and soggy. Duck and Lobster Paella were both just okay. Waiter told us if one person ordered the 4 course, then everyone had to order the 4 course. Really?? We did what he said but that is utterly ridiculous. Certainly a restaurant can time the service. This was our first time so we will try it again as we like neighborhood local spots. Hoping next time is better."

  • "Bastille has a nice ambience and good service. You paid for what you get for the services but can't speak the same for food. My husband, my daughter, and I ordered bistro menu (3courses). We all disliked the lobster bisque soup. My scallops dish was fine but had better. My husband had hanging steaks, not recommended because it was not tasty at all. My daughter had a mussels dish and the size of the mussels were so small. Also, she said she had it better. We did the wine paring - we probably could do our own paring and would enjoy it better. We will not come back to this restaurant. I love French food and will continue trying another French restaurants."

  • "Second time at Bastille, this time with my European parents. They LOVED it. The service is superb. The waitress is an absolute old school professional. The food is divine, and so well done you actually feel transported to France. And the wine list is excellent. You simply can't go wrong. I cannot speak highly enough about this place!! They were also kind enough to bring me a glass of champagne for my birthday, which is always a nice touch."

  • "We have eaten here several times, but this was among our best visits. The choice of chaucuterie is always great and the duck prosciutto is outstanding. I has a lobster risotto which was among the best dishes I've ever had. The risotto was perfectly cooked with a whole lobster out of its shell and succulent. Great frites, great desserts, wonderful wines. What's not to like?"

  • "As usual, Bastille continues to be among the top French and among the top restaurants in Old Town Alexandria, despite its more northerly location. Service good but a little erratic."

  • "Always an exceptional lunch with the most pleasant service from Khadija, who makes dining such there such a pleasure. While there are many delicious dishes offered, their cheeseburger is excellent ~ it's always a hard choice between scallops, when offered and the cheeseburger."

  • "Salads and deserts a strong suit, steaks (au poivre and hangar) lacked flavor and were not cooked to order. Good wine list. Pleasant ambience. Parking on a Friday night was a crapshoot."

  • "I had the cod fritters, risotto, and chocolate on the Sunday dinner menu. All were ok. None were great. M friend had the soup special, hanger steak, and apple tart. He thought they were all really good. I'm glad i went once, and the place was full, but I wouldn't return. It's a very pork heavy menu, and I found the options limited."

  • "You can always count on Bastille to serve a good meal with a twist. French Scrambled eggs were on biscuits with a wonderful mushroom sauce that enhanced the eggs perfectly. It came with a side of potatoes and a nice little salad. Very filling, generous portions. It was washed down with the traditional Sunday mimosa. They offer a very nicely priced pre fixe option with 3 courses but the servings are so generous, I chose not to go that route...too much food. We did share the cod beignets which was the only small disappointment. They were a little undercooked inside and tough on the outside. The aioli sauce made them edible. Great server...very tolerant of 6 adults who couldn't make up their minds."

  • "I love the relaxed feel of this restaurant - very comfortable. The staff friendly and ready to help with wine and food selections. I had the salmon and was not disappointed."

  • "I have been to Bastille several time for brunch which is lovely especially on a nice day when you can sit outside. Dinner was great and the service is wonderful. They have a three, four and five course dinners as well as individual selections. This is real country french cooking nothing better with a good glass of wine. They do offer a discount for dinner if you eat at the bar. Highly recommend."

  • "We went for Sunday brunch to celebrate 2 birthdays and had requested a table not by the kitchen and not in front of the door/drafty area and they first at us at a table right in front of the door so not sure they read the request or not. They did offer us glasses of champagne gratis and put candles on the desserts so they did get it at some point. The restaurant was almost empty as we arrived right when they opened. We asked to be moved and were. The food was quite good but portions were larger than necessary for me. Service was good but food was slow in getting to us between courses. As it grew more crowded, the waiter was harder to find but not frustratingly so. He was quite nice and professional. Would go back."
