Diner Reviews
  • "I always enjoy the food, and the location is convenient with plenty of parking. My only criticism is for this particular visit. My wife and I asked for outside seating, but there were two tables for four, and we didn't want to wait for a table for two outside. We were seated inside, unfortunately on a break in the banquette, which was not very comfortable. When we left there were at least two tables for four inside and some outside that had one or two people at them. It would be nice if they were more responsive to the wishes of returning customers with reservations rather than waiting for the slight possibility of larger walk-ins."

  • "My wife and I were a bit disappointed, since the restaurant alays has high marks in Washingtonian magazine. It was above average but not spectacular. We might try it again in the future but we are in no big hurry."

  • "One of the best restaurant week deals I have been to in the DC area. They provide many options for each course and don't hold back on portion size."

  • "Bastille is one of my favorite restaurants in Alexandria, and this dining experience reminded me why. Restaurant Week happened to time out with my birthday week, and the menu--and value--was excellent. I will continue to return to Bastille and recommend it to others."

  • "This was my favorite restaurant week mms meal. The portions were hearty and the taste was incredible. I will definitely be going back and will make sure too try another awesome dish."

  • "I've lived in Alexandria for 11 years. This was one of the best meals I've had here. Went for Restaurant Week with 2 girlfriends. We all got something different & we were all very pleased with our choice. The bottle of Pinot Gris we picked was fantastic. I started with fresh burrata cheese with melon, pistachios, olive oil. Entree was duck with a honey lavender sauce, summer veggies, fingering potatoes...perfectly seasoned & a perfect sized portion. Service was good. Courses arrived in timely manner. Not too fast or slow. Never felt rushed. My only disappointment is that I didn't discover Bastille sooner."

  • "The food was excellent and so was the service. I had the duck and my date had the mussels. We were both very impressed and so hPpy to finally try this place. We will definitely return."

  • "Bastille is a gem of a restaurant in Alexandria, Va. It's near DCA and has parking too! Service is top and the manager is right on site so nothing is left to chance. Great food."

  • "and the deal of the century with the restaurant week in Alexandria....food here is exquisite....service fantastic.....a typical French Bistro - crowded, bustling, noisy, and wonderful...."

  • "This is a charming little restaurant next to an antique store with old world charm and amazing food. The Shrimp Beignet is a must...The Hangar Steak is the juiciest I have ever had, even the fries are awesome. Service is attentive and non-intrusive. I will be back"

  • "We had lunch here during Restaurant week and really enjoyed it. I bet it's little on the noisy side when full, but we were in a corner so it wasn't bad. Food was good; server was good; it was an all around pleasant experience. We would recommend to others."

  • "Charcuterie, fried green tomatoes, seared scallops, and Valrhona marquise (chocolate mousse) were all delicious. The service was perfect - there when we wanted it and absent when we didn't. Nice atmosphere. Altogether my favorite restaurant in Alexandria."

  • "The food was so good,so unique and so beautifully presented. One of those rare times when a dinner out is a memorable experience."

  • "My second time here - I just love the desserts!! I've tried three between the two visits and they're all great. Food is beautiful and inventive, and the duck entrée is amazing. Beignet appetizer is tasty. Steak frites is good. Was disappointed by the wines by the glass, the burrata starter had gone bad - cheese tasted like vinegar, the service was just okay. Waited 10 minutes at the door before the host surfaced. Tons of tables were empty and yet he made us wait in front of the door for another 5 before he'd seat us. And the water refills came so often and aggressively that we had a guy leaning over our table between us about every 5 minutes. Waitress was the service's only saving grace."

  • "Bastille is a hidden gem -- The food, ambiance and service were impeccable. The quality of the food was savory and complex; our servers were amicable, timely and had great banter. We didn't wait long for our meals, and special requests were delivered without a raised eyebrow. It was a delightful experience."

  • "The food was excellent, I enjoyed all of my courses. Overall the ambiance was great, cozy and homey but not cramped. I liked the small size of the place and that it is a bit tucked away in town....a good romantic spot. There are a few interior finishes/architectural details that could be improved but this didn't really detract from my overall experience. I would love to go back again and try some more of their offerings!"

  • "I was here for restaurant week with a friend. It took them 25 minutes to greet us after we were seated...I complained to management. A party that arrived after us, was greeted before us. Besides that, the food was pretty good. Nothing amazing. Besides the lateness, our server was pretty friendly. I had the shrimp beignets, lamb chops, and peach desert. The beignets were interesting, pretty good. The lamb chops were a bit chewy and not plentiful, only 2. But very tasty. The peach desert was near perfect. It was not too sweet and very well put together. I might consider returning, hopefully the service will be better next time."

  • "So, Bastille is always delicious. Restaurant week was no exception. Patrick was our waiter, and he was wonderful. He made terrific suggestions, and every single one of them was an absolute hit. My favorite were the scallops. They were cooked perfectly. My friend had the lamb… Oh my goodness! That lamb was the best I think I've ever had. I'm never disappointed when I go to this restaurant. You won't be either. Oh and don't forget to have a glass of the Bordeaux; it's always delicious!"

  • "Went for lunch during restaurant week, had a fantastic meal. Thank god I don't eat like that every day however or I'd be 500lbs. The burrata cheese was so fantastic, I'd go back just for that."

  • "This place never fails to amaze. The dishes are almost all always outstanding, creative and beautifully presented and of good size for the price. Service is always good, staff friendly and pleasant ambiance. We have eaten here about seven times in last two years and never have been disappointed. Just this week I went with four guys to lunch and aside from each of them loving every dish, they totally cleaned their plates to the last drop. Also, the wine list has a very balanced and good selection of wines for all tastes and budgets. Go - Bastille!"

  • "This is always one of our favorites for special occasions. We tried it for restaurant week and were not disappointed. There were a wide variety of choices with the same high quality as the regular menu. The mussels in particular were outstanding."

  • "Just an exceptional experience (again). I've never had bad service but this latest visit Patrick was particularly kind to this solo diner. It was a beautiful night so I sat outside for the first time. Other than the occasional plane departing Reagan Washington National (which I enjoy watching) it was very peaceful. I have never been disappointed with any menu choice. Highly recommend."

  • "This was my first time at Bastille. All of my 3 courses: Escargot, duck and peach dessert was delicious even the ice tea! Outstanding! Just love it! Would love to take my parents here sometime! Environment and our lady server are excellent too!"

  • "Wonderful food in a small, intimate setting. We went during restaurant week and the selections were off of the regular menu. They did not include the regular prices on the menu so we were unable to tell what the cost of our meal would have been."

  • "We came for restaurant week. The menu was amazing - couldn't have asked for more. Great to have such a top notch place in the north end of Old Town."

  • "This was our first trip to Bastille - we will most definitely return. The food was excellent - the duck was among the best I have had in years - and the service was impeccable. The server knew her stuff and we followed her recommendations. She was right about everything. We did the wine paring with out meal and they were execellent. We liked the ambiance and the whole feel of this restaurant and struggle to find any negatives to say about it. We look forward to returning soon."

  • "First visit to Bastille & the experience guarantees that we'll be back again. This North Old Town Alexandria location is unmatched for its uniqueness. Wife had the scallops & me the duck breast. Both were prepared flawlessly & perfectly matched with the wine recommended by our waitress. It was a beautiful evening so we opted for the patio dining but the interior of Bastille is also quite beautiful. They have a great happy hour deal at the bar during the week which will bring us back during non-Restaurant Week times. Give Bastille a try!"

  • "We found the pairing of the salmon and the sides to be spectacular. One of the best we've had. Kudos to the chef. We also enjoyed interacting with the wait staf. We found our waiter very knowledgable about the menu and food in general. He also has a flair for chatting with us and keeping the mood of the evening very light. We truely enjoyed the experience, are stil talking about it several days later, and will go back again."

  • "Visited this restaurant for the first time during Restaurant Week for lunch. The chef did not skimp. Our 3 course meal was absolutely delicious, beautifully presented and just the right portion size. Often the higher the price the smaller the plate. Not so at Bastille. The chef utilized in season fruits and vegetables raising the level of quality and taste. I would highly recommend this restaurant."

  • "My husband and I had lunch at Bastille during Restaurant Week. I had arugula with goat cheese cromesqui, peaches and pecans; duck confit with peaches and roasted vegetables, and the Valrhona pot de creme. My husband had the beignets, the beef burger with cheddar cheese and french fires, and the peach melba almond streusel. Both of our lunches were delicious. The service was efficient and friendly. We ate outside on the lovely patio since it was a lovely day with low humidity. The only downside was that when jets taking off from National Airport which is close by took a southerly flight path, conversation was a bit difficult. Luckily there were not many of them. We will definitely return to this restaurant."

  • "The food was OK, the service was OK. Everyone was perfectly nice, but the service just didn't work - no continuity and they actually felt very distant in a sense. There was nothing special, nothing delicious, nothing overwhelming about the food (or the place generally). We went for Restaurant Week, and normally I have great experiences with Restaurant Week, but there was nothing that would make me want to go back and pay for a full priced meal at Bastille. Also, there is not enough outdoor lighting for dining at night - I could barely see my food."

  • "Service was very good. Food could be better. The onglet was very chewy but the sauce was delicious. Fries reminded me of boardwalk fries which use the same oil over and over again. The fries need to be crisp with a slight crunch, not soggy."
