A word from Bastille Cafe & Bar
Opened in June of 2009 and housed in an historic 1920’s building in Seattle’s Old Ballard neighborhood, Bastille Café & Bar is a bustling homage to a Parisian brasserie. Owners Deming Maclise and James Weimann scoured Paris flea markets and local salvage stores for vintage accessories to create a truly authentic feel. From the white subway tiles, antique mirrors, and Paris Metro clock to the zinc-topped bar and stunning crystal chandelier that takes center stage in the Back Bar; they’ve truly hit the mark. Chef Jason Stoneburner creates French focused cuisine inspired by the abundance of seasonal product found locally---and it doesn’t get any more local than the restaurants 4500-square-foot organic rooftop garden. The wine list is French focused with a smattering of NW wines and the bar offers an extensive collection of absinthe.Continued

  • "….menu on the web site has several items that were not offered……halibut overpriced and served cold…..food marginal at best."

  • "This was the first time I had eaten here since soon after the restaurant opened, when my husband and I found it difficult to talk over the noise level. My husband won't go back, so I took my two teenage grandchildren to what I would call an early dinner (6 pm), hoping to find it less noisy. Unfortunately, it was still difficult to hold a conversation without talking loudly ourselves. Maybe the outdoor seating would be better? The food and service has been good on both visits and the frites with truffle aioli are not to be missed."

  • "We decided to do small plates. Oysters, pate, cauliflower/fava bean gratin, asparagus salad with wine and dessert. Everything was wonderful. Small, tasty oysters, rich pate great. The gratin was tasty and flavorful. Perfectly grilled asparagus with feta and an herb salad was a wonderful palate cleanser. And profiteroles for dessert. Food was well prepared, flavorful and eye appealing. Would definitely return."

  • "It's hard to beat the combination of walking through the Ballard Sunday market and capping it off with brunch at Bastille."

  • "We came here for our Anniversary Dinner and everything was fabulous. The cocktails are great, and there is a great variety of vegetarian options, without even seeming like they are vegetarian. The food was delicious, and the ambiance is amazing. There was an old French movie playing on the TV, the waiter was very attentive and everything was perfect. We will be coming back often!"

  • "I love Bastille. Not only do they have great food, that's delicious, beautiful, and reasonably local, they have awesome cocktails."

  • "Flat beer. Food was good but really $3 for bread?!!! Come on."

  • "A Seattle gem that has the sophistication of DC or SF. I love that they have the rooftop graden and build their menu off it. This is our date night restaurant that we go to on a regular basis."

  • "Bastille's food is great, as is the service. The white subway tiled walls look nice, but bounce the sound around the room. Prices are a hindrance to making this more than a "special occasion" place to eat."

  • "Awesome food and service! A little loud on a Friday night, but can't complain about that too much. Highly recommended."

  • "It was our first time dining at Bastille Café and we were very impressed with the level of service and quality of menu options. The classic breakfast and French toast portions were just right for brunch. Our waitress was attentive and cheerful, answering questions about dishes and ensuring we did not run out of coffee at the table. We were seated in the enclosed patio which was pleasantly warmed by a fireplaces and heaters. The energetic atmosphere was enjoyable for the casual occasion. And just steps from the popular Ballard Market. We will certainly visit again."

  • "This is known as a Ballard gem but we must have had an off night. The steak frites was a bad choice. The steak was tough and fries were cold. Our server was knowledgeable and very nice but service was extremely slow. I understand that Bastille is a very popular restaurant and the back bar was packed. The open kitchen showed everyone was busting their butts, however, I'll try other popular spots before going back. And - parking is a b---- in Ballard !!"

  • "Great food, great service. It did get quite a bit noisy, but overall it was fine. It is pricey, but the quality of the food is up there. I wish there was more variety in the specials - everything is very much cheese-filled. That's the only thing keeping it from the 5 stars."

  • "Excellent French bistro food and unhurried service make Bastille a dining experience we would happily repeat. The moules frites are delicious, tender plump mussels and crispy frites, best with the optional truffle aioli. Steak also excellent and the profiteroles are a yummy way to conclude our meal."

  • "4 of us went out for a birthday dinner. After some drinks for starters we waited a little while. Unfortunately our server was also serving a very large group and so he disappeared for little chunks of time. He was very friendly though. If you go sitting outside is very nice as long as it isn't too cold. They have heaters but a back door gets opened and let's in the chill. Happy hour is great!"

  • "I really enjoyed Bastille- it is quite noisy , so keep in mind If you are planning a serious conversation this is not the place. I do like the vibrant energy, great food, vast wine list, and friendly service."

  • "I gave this restaurant a low rating because the noise level was so out of control, we could hardly hear what anyone at the table for 4 was saying. You are not giving an option of "too loud" on the above noise level grade. Why is that? I would only recommend this restaurant for those who want a loud and lively bar scene. It's too bad because the restaurant is very attractive and could be a lot of fun."

  • "Food was a bit disappointing and not as good as the first time we diners there several years ago."

  • "We had a nice table on the enclosed patio, and the heaters were on, but it was so chilly that we had to keep our coats on during the meal. The patio was quieter than the main restaurant, but it was tough to fully enjoy the evening when stuck in fleece. The beet salad was amazing, and the mussels perfectly tender. The onion soup was a vets small portion for the price. We didn't stay for dessert, but might go again. Service was decent."

  • "This was the 4th time we have eaten here. The chicken is Fabulous! Made the mistake of ordering a lamb special which was awful :(. Over cooked, tough and on top of a luke warm purée of carrots. After two bites I sent it back. The service was great but so disappointed this visit."

  • "We had a reservation in the restaurant and, when we arrived, the place was packed. We decided to check out the back bar and were able to get a table immediately and decided to stay back there. It was pretty loud (it's the bar) but the bar scene is great and we were able to order off the dinner menu and the service was fantastic. We've eaten at Bastille many times and it continues to be one of our favorite places. They also have a beautiful wine list. We usually have our waiter make recommendations based on our order - always great. I would highly recommend this restaurant to people who love food, people who want to be romantic, people who want to impress and even people with dietary restrictions as they'll modify anything for you."

  • "After hearing good things about Bastille from a couple of friends we were eager to try it. Went to a Happy Hour. All right, not great, but decided to give it another try. Have to say we were disappointed. Although the flavor of the cassoulet was nice, it was way too dry; breadcrumbs all over the meat just accentuated the problem. The malbec was undistinguished, and the waiter didn't seem to know much about wine. The hamburger was just a hamburger. Must say the French fries were excellent, though."

  • "The portions were not very big, however both my girlfriend and I felt that they were appropriately filling. Very good quality dishes. The entrees and dessert were all excellent. Can't say anything about the wine as we had beer, but I thought they had a decent enough draft selection. Service was fine, thought we did order coffees that never came. We had 9pm reservations on a Sunday, and the restaurant was about half full. Lighting and ambience fit for a romantic dinner. This place came recommended from a friend, and we'd definitely recommend it too."

  • "My husband and I celebrated our anniversary at Bastille on Thursday evening. We are headed to Paris in April and this was a fantastic appetizer for our trip. All our dishes were exceptional, as were the wine and the service. We can't wait to go back."

  • "This is the second time I've been to Bastille and I had a great time. Our server was great - attentive and pleasant without being in our face and overly nice. Food was excellent. The steak was cooked perfectly. Muscles were great. Cocktails were interesting, some better than others but generally pretty tasty. Atmosphere was pretty energetic because it was V-day. Overall a very positive experience."

  • "This is a great restaurant. The food is fabulous and the selection of items has something for everyone. It's a family friendly place but also wonderful for a special occasion dinner. I've been there many times and will dine there again any chance I get."

  • "I recently dined here for the first time. We were seated in the garden area, which is heated and enclosed from the elements in winter. The service was leisurely, but attentive, which allowed for enjoyment of each course. The food was in general very good. I enjoyed the cauliflower soup, but the large scallop in the soup was slightly undercooked. The steak frites were very good, but frites themselves were almost too salty. One of the members of our party indicated that the coffee tasted old. Another friend enjoyed the kale salad and cauliflower chateaubriand and enjoyed these very much. I would definitely dine here again, despite these issues."

  • "I had an egg dish in a cast iron bowl and all I could taste was the ham. Way too much ham. Should of had the French toast but wanted to try something else and was very disappointed."
    Dined on 2/9/2014
  • "Salad was bland - why no dressing of any sort but a smattering of flavorless vinaigrette? The rabbit pate' was nice - not great - but came out quickly but without the baguette we ordered so we couldn't eat it for about 15 minutes until they brought the baguette. The brussell sprouts gratin was ok but overcooked; I would not order it again. The lamb with rigatoni was good. All in all, I was somewhat disappointed. I had high hopes for this lovely place."

  • "This is my most favorite restaurant in Seattle. Hands. Down."
    Dined on 7/14/2013
  • "I'd give Bastille 3.5 stars, not 4, for a couple of reasons. First, the hosting staff was not very good. We arrived a bit early and our table wasn't ready yet. Typically in this situation the hostess will offer to take you to the bar so you can relax with a drink while you wait. Not this time. She had nothing to say or suggest. The food was very good, and I do enjoy the atmosphere. But there was an extremely loud child seated right next to us. His piercing screams stopped conversation in its tracks. The acoustics are unforgiving. I could not recommend this for a romantic dinner or conversation."

  • "The food was very good. Prefectly prepared. The restaurant was very noisy hard to have a quiet conversation. Service was good. Knowledgeable wait staff"

  • "We love the ambiance, it's beautiful! The service is fantastic too, but while the food is interesting, and tasty, the portions are so tiny you'll need more than just an entree. We aren't big eaters, and feel most restaurants serve too much, but for close to 200 dollars, a table of 4 should not go away hungry. Also we were surprised to find our glass of wine was 18 dollars a glass! Honestly, that should have been communicated. I'm sorry to say, we would not likely go back for dinner, but might return for drinks only."

  • "I moved beyond my usually mussels and F rites (they have the best mussels) and was not disappointed at all, the chicken was wonderful. I wanted to treat my Nephew for his 40th birthday celebration all 4 dinner's were delightful and we were so pleased with how the evening went. Don't forget to check out the bar in the back of the building....it is a great alternative to having dinner in the restaurant."

  • "The food and service was wonderful! The ambiance was perfect for a first date except for the noise level which was tough to hear over! Was lucky enough to be eating with someone who knows French cuisine so she could explain the details of the menu."

  • "We went here when they first opened and didn't really recall or have poor opinions other than it was really loud. Wanting to bring an employee out to a special dinner, we thought we should give this place a go again. At first, the hostess tried to seat us next to the kitchen despite numerous better tables sitting vacant. So annoying and yes, we had reservations so not just some passersby dropping in. I asked to be seated in the outdoor heated and covered patio area, which I think is the only acceptable place to sit for dinner due to the high noise level this restaurant produces...maybe it's all of the tile? Food is okay, service is good enough but next time we go, it probably will be as passersby dropping in on a whim."
