Diner Reviews
  • "We chose this place because it offered outdoor seating. When we got there they seemed annoyed that we requested on Open Table to sit outside. They did not have their patio open so they sat us on the patio that was next door, our waiter seemed very annoyed. By the time we ordered & are he was better, I appreciated the accommodation, but wish they would have called to let us know. The food was amazing & we had beautiful weather for outdoor seating."

  • "Menu advertises dining is family-style, encouraging sharing. I ordered a half-order of the pasta while my dining companions ordered pizzas. Pasta was excellent, but a half-order was much smaller than I expected, and certainly not enough to sate me. Pizzas were excellent, and definitely big enough to share. Overall very good food (but order a full portion if you're hungry)."

  • "We chose a variety of things to eat and they were all excellent! We had the cracked pepper pasta which is the most generic pasta they have and it was fabulous. Filled with flavor! I will go back! The basement atmosphere is cool and fun! Holly was our waitress and she was a doll!"

  • "Wonderful flavors happening with just about every dish. If a first-time visitor, suggest ordering a number of small plates to get exposure to a number of dishes"

  • "The noise level was off the charts with the final four, cardinal baseball and the crazy techno music beat in the forefront."

  • "Had a really nice dinner at Basso Saturday night around 8pm. We started with the calamari which was excellent, and the chicken wings, which my husband loved. We both had pasta (the hazelnut pesto and the agnolotti) , which were good but not great. Our server was excellent. The only problem was the acoustics are so bad that we had to shout at each other to be heard. That made for an unpleasant experience. I guess the good news for Basso is that the place was packed and no one else seemed to care!"

  • "Great spot. Enjoyed with a group of 8 on a busy Saturday night. Noise level is high, so not the spot to go if you're looking for romantic dinner conversation. Food was excellent, atmosphere is fun and energetic. We were there on a very busy Saturday evening, so service was a little slow. Definitely a spot I'd recommend."

  • "The food was amazing! Wine and beer selection great. We had fun passing the dishes around to taste everything, and I didn't try something I didn't like! It was a little loud and made it a little hard to visit... but in reality we are all too busy eating!! Will definitely be back!"

  • "3rd time we ate at Basso--and as expected more great food. Fresh ingredients and very good service--Thanks Mark!! Tried the new Fonduta-very good. Will be back."

  • "3 of us went and shared carrots, brussel sprouts, lamb meatballs, kale salad, and a pasta dish. All were exception with the exception being the meatballs which were only okay. The wine was great and the service prompt and friendly."

  • "We ordered several dishes and shared them among 4 people. The salad was easily split between 4 people, the ribs were wonderful and served 4 to an order, a nice size vampire pizza gave all us of 2 pcs each and a large pasta dish was passed arround. Food was great and they had a wonderful $40 bottle of Chianti"

  • "Everything was great except the pasta. A bit overcooked. But the desserts, and small plates of cauliflower and dates were outstanding. Charming waitress, good atmosphere. We'll be back."

  • "The food and service at Basso were excellent, but the noise level on a Thursday evening was so loud that the four of us had to yell to be heard at our table."

  • "Basso has what is probably the best salume e formaggi platter in St. Louis. But be warned: it's to share, and I almost overdosed on pork and cheese goodness. That said, I made room for a half-order of the pasta mafalda, which comes with (again) one of the best Bolognese sauces in town. Yes, the place is pretty noisy, but get a booth away from the crowd, and enjoy."

  • "Had never visited before. Met a friend for drinks. Great beer list and server was very knowlegable and helpful with selection. Not being a beer expert he helped me make a good choice. The Crispy Meatballs were wonderful and I really enjoyed my Pizza. Will visit again."

  • "Seems they can't decide if they want to be a watering hole or a dark upscale restaurant. The drink menu has bourbon/gin/scotch drinks and very few to choose from. Had calamari and chicken both of which had a tomato base. Calamari was tasteless and so was the pizza we didn't even finish."

  • "This was my husband and I's second visit and I enjoyed it as much as the first. We absolutely love this place. The food is a touch of different with flavors that make your mouth happy! The ambience is outstanding and perfect for us. The help is fantastic too! All around awesome. We will definitely go back."

  • "Restaurant has a nice look to it, but the open rafters make for a very noisy experience. My companion could not hear me. The food and drink were very good; the servers were attentive and knowledgeable."

  • "We decided to try Happy Hour at Basso before catching a show at the Firebird. The drink specials were great and the food was very good. The antipasti portions were generous and the pizza was delicious. Even though it's an upbeat, buzzy place, we could still carry on a conversation comfortably. Perfect for a romantic or girls/guys night out. We'll definitely go back for dinner."

  • "Thanks Basso for coming through in the clutch on Valentine's Day. I had never been to Basso, so I was relying on some on-line reviews, including a mention from Sauce Magazine, in selecting it for our Valentine's Day dinner. We were not disappointed. Definitely coming back."

  • "This was my first experience at Basso and overall it was great. I really enjoyed the Ribs they were fall of the bone good. The only real complaint I have is the music was way to loud and my pizza was a bit over cooked. Other than that I would highly recommend to anyone who enjoys good food and fantastic service."

  • "Arrived early on a reservation and was politely accommodated. Being my first dining experience here, I had several menu questions. My waitress answered with knowledge and enthusiasm. Food was cooked perfectly and had complexity in every dish. I will be returning and recommending to friends/clients."

  • "Whether it is the fresh pasta, wood fired pizzas or freshly made salads, the food at Basso is thought out long before it hits the table. There are no strange combinations and nothing that screams pretentious as the food is simple yet elegant."

  • "Although I had to take a much earlier reservation (my own fault, procrastinated), there were still plenty of other diners. We were seated promptly in a nice booth, and our server arrived shortly thereafter. She made some recommendations and our appetizers arrived so quickly it was amazing. Quality of the food and visual appeal were top notch, crispy meatballs did not disappoint and the dressing on the bib lettuce was amazing. I should have asked about the ingredients. The server really listened to my comments and responded appropriately. This is our fourth visit to Basso, and each has been consistently great. We will be back."

  • "Clubby, casual yet vibrant. Feels like a wine cellar. Sports on the tv's, but not an overly themed sports-bar. Interesting food - you can have a full meal or a pizza and salad."

  • "My husband and I have been chasing the proverbial white rabbit since our trip to Italy 2 years ago. We were extatic to find an authentic Italian flavor at Basso. The pizza was amazing as we're the pasta dishes and desserts we had. We will certainly be going Barack!"

  • "Basso has a great reputation for a younger set, benefiting from the pedigree of the Cheshire (and its restaurant) while making for a bit more of a casual dining experience. Good beer and liquor selection and high quality food make up for what can be a bit of an overwhelming ambiance for a more intimate dining experience."

  • "We had another enjoyable meal at Basso on Saturday. We started off with the crispy meatballs app and the kale ceasar salad. Both were delicious and the salad is more than enough for two people. Then we had the Golden Arches pizza, by far the best one on the list. Next time we plan to try some of the sides. We saw other tables getting the cauliflower and it looked amazing. My suggestion would be to come with another couple and share a bunch of stuff, there is not much that disappoints on this menu. The only downside is the noise level which we knew about in advance and had requested a booth, unfortunately that did not work out and we got seated at a two top near the bar. This issue aside we will still be back we love the place!"

  • "Quick dinner at Basso before heading to Grand Center for a show. Packed as usual, with a fun, high energy vibe--and no problem being seated immediately with our opentable reservation! Always enjoy the salads and pizza but tried a few new menu items of particular note--the roasted dates were both unique and delicious, perfect for sharing with cocktails--and the crispy meatballs really hit the spot on a cold night. The sauce was so good we licked the bowl clean! Great spot for a pre-show meal with the added bonus of being able to catch some of the Olympics opening ceremony."
