It is dark and cozy. There is a great big bar with lots of draft beer choices.
The menu is really interesting g. It's Italian but not the same old pasta dishes that you can get from anywhere. I'm really not even an Italian food fan and I LOVE the food at Basso. I've had a pizza, asparagus (a MUST-TRY) calamari, burger, desserts and a couple of daily menu specials and its all been great! The food is fresh, well cooked and nicely presented.
Our waitresses/servers have been very good, as well. They've been very knowledgeable about the menu and drinks (beer). The food comes out fast. It's cooked like you ask. It tastes great.

Terrific room. Inventive menu, especially at dinner. The lamb meatballs and polenta were fantastic. Gnocchi was delicious. If you're looking for a hot bar scene, go on weekends; if you want to be able to converse over dinner, go on weeknights. The weekend noise level is beyond "energetic" and we'll into "loud". As for the food, the salume and cheese plates were stellar as were the pasta mafalda and the cacio e pepe. Not so much the gnocchi, which were textureless and way too highly flavored with dill. The atmosphere, service and food were all top notch, which is all you can hope for in a dining experience. Zelee was an excellent server, and Chrystal went above and beyond to make us feel welcome. The comfy booth allowed for toasts and reminiscence, the mood was relaxed, yet perfect for celebration, and the service was very personal and competent. We will definitely be back. I would even consider sitting at the bar for small plates and a drink because of the comfort level - which is unusual for me. I had heard that all the tables surrounded the bar, and that made me fear the place was about drinks and partying, as opposed to good food. What a surprise to find not just the expected well-made cocktails but also a delicious salume plate with warm oiled bread, plus a really superb pasta mafalda with a quite authentic Bolognese sauce. My husband and I went to Basso on a Monday evening for his 31st birthday. When the waitress, Amy, asked if we had ever been there before, I told her "No, it was recommended to us for his birthday today". So she said, "Happy Birthday" and let us have a few minutes to look over the menu. She then brought us a surprise champagne toast for his birthday! It was such a lovely gesture. She was very knowledgeable regarding the menu and a very sweet girl. She wasn't lying when she said the mushroom pasta (forgive me as I cannot recall the fancy italian name), certain pizzas and the apps we ate were some of her favorites! Excellent and creative food, large choice of bar offerings, both mixed and beer. Good but not outstanding service (both times it seemed as though our wait person had too many tables or responsibilities, although "helpers" made it efficient by bringing the dishes. Design is cool!! As are the late night patrons. It was practically empty at 7:30 but full by 8. Two issues: very, very noisy but similar to other hip bars. And the $4 valet "fee" in an area that has little other parking available seems "captive." The carpaccio was good not very good as thought it was a little bland, so no five star today. We got a lesson in grappa from the manager after I asked about it and we did a blind tasting with him, and, of course, picked the most expensive, but best tasting, one out. All in all a fun lively spot with interesting food to eat. We were skeptical after reading the post dispatch review, but we do not agree with it all.
