A word from Basin Seafood and Spirits
The idea for Basin began several years ago when Chef and Owner of Baru, Edgar Caro and Thomas Peters, a former fishing guide whose family operates a fishing charter business from Venice, Louisiana, returned from a fishing trip. They caught a snapper and Edgar made it into a dockside ceviche that Thomas maintains was one of the best fish preparations he ever tasted.

Along with their friend Antonio Mata, they decided to open Basin, a seafood restaurant serving modernized, lighter versions of traditional Louisiana dishes. Basin sources the best possible ingredients from local sources, highlighting seasonal vegetables and Gulf fish in our daily specials.
Basin offers sidewalk seating along the busiest sector of Magazine Street. We also have a lush courtyard for additional seating and a relaxing escape from the city.

Diner Reviews
  • "Noise level made it difficult to carry on a conversation but the food was great. We'll be back."

  • "Our server knew the menu well, and was able to make several recommendations that were right on the mark. Absolutely no complaints about the food. Since we were in a small group, we opted for several appetizers that we could all share."

  • "The whole fish was better than the one I had at Peche a few weeks ago -- the skin was crisper and more delicious. Everything was great: octopus ceviche, crab balls, boudin balls, fish tacos (except one of us doesn't like fish tacos made with a whole piece of fried fish), fried catfish. Even the pork dish with gravy was good. My only gripe was that the place was too noisy -- mainly because of the canned music; it just ramped up the noise level as people had to talk or shout over the music. Why is that considered necessary? But I'll gladly go back!"

  • "The location was great, especially when the weather is nice and outdoor seating is an option. We ordered an arugula salad and was told that they were out of arugula. The menu needs some work"
