Diner Reviews
  • "Let me start by saying that I'm Greek. I've been eating Greek food all of my life, so going to a Greek restaurant is probably a different experience for me than it is for others. That being said, the food was great, perfectly cooked. So good I actually said in the days that followed, "man Basil's was good"; however, the wait staff was another story. While they were attentive, they lacked authenticity. The waitstaff was unsure about some of the ingredients used in dishes, they didn't know how to properly pronounce the names of the dishes, and our waitress even had trouble lighting the saganaki. Still, I would definitely go back and would recommend this to others - a better staff would just take this location to another level."

  • "The food, ambiance, and staff were wonderful. I sat on the back patio area and it was a beautiful setting, tucked away. My only negative comment is the pricing of the menu. It's a Greek restaurant and I wasn't expecting the menu items to be priced so high. I would go back, but probably just for special occasions."

  • "Basils is a must, especially in the summer on their patio! Service and food is always great. Our female server and the busser were fantastic Thursday lunch."

  • "My wife and I dine here frequently. The food selections are great and the food itself is wonderful. Angelo, the host, is very affable and seems very interested that diners have an enjoyable experience. The place is well maintained, clean, and the landscaping outside is very pleasant. They offer outside dining in the summer which we find pleasant too."

  • "I've been here a few times before and always enjoy the experience. the food is excellent, if you don't like Greek food they have other choices that I'm sure are just as good. We ate outside just before the rain came and the only bad thing I can say is that a bus boy was walking a cart full of dirty dishes by our table to the back gate (why this couldn't be done inside the restaurant is beside me) and he banged the dishes and a gate as he pushed thru it. Not the background you want for a romantic dinner. Other than this it was all very good."

  • "Portions are very generous. Split the grilled calamari and then had tomato basil soup, which was both excellent and huge so had to take home the gyros(also enough for two)!"

  • "Everything was ok, good, just not as good as previous visits. We have been several times for normal and holiday meals with always great food. This just felt like an off day with everything ok but nothing more than just ok."

  • "Visit frequently, my wife had to send back the pork chops as way to over done and tough and the sides were cold. My lamb chops were perfect. They switched out the pork chops to a shrimp dish at her request and all was well. Just a bad night in the kitchen. We will be back"

  • "My absolute love for Greek food drew us here. And I must say I am so happy we gave it a chance! The food was outstanding! There are no other words to describe it. I have been to many greek restaurants and there are none that can compare to Basils. The service was impeccable and we felt welcome the second we walked in the door. I will definitely be returning soon, just typing this review is starting to make my mouth water! Cannot wait to come back!!!!!"

  • "Fantastic food, atmosphere, and service! They were able to seat us early despite a later reservation, and went on to be very attentive, recommend excellent dishes, and even help us plan a party."

  • "we went for mother's day. our waitress was very attentive despite that it seemed short staffed. our meals took alittle longer to come from the kitchen than we expected. out waitress got our appetizers and drink in a very efficient manner. table staff cleared area quickly. rather noisy and since tables are close together hard to keep conversation going and sometimes had staff or customers behinds alittle to close. but definitely a repeat."

  • "What a wonderful Mother's Day lunch we had. We were a party of 9 (which included 3 kids) and EVERYONE said how it was the best Mother's Day Lunch we've had in years! Thank you Open Table for finding us such a delicious and GLUTEN Free restaurant! You have gained future customers!"

  • "Went here for Mother's Day dinner. Not overly busy. Seated immediately but took several minutes for wait staff to take our drink orders. Ordered an appetizer with drinks (saganaki) which came without the usual flaming fanfare. Again had to wait too long to place our food order. Food arrived and was great. The chicken limonati on linguini was perfect as was my son's seafood linguini."

  • "Disappointed in the food, no vegetarian dolmades which was the main thing we were looking forward to after viewing online menu. Discovered bits of bone in the gyros and shell in the crab cakes, ug. The service was good, seated immediately with our reservation made just a few hours earlier and the waitress was attentive and efficient, but we will not return or recommend for the food. "

  • "The welcome and first impression we loved. The Maitre'D was superb in every way. The server was busy with many tables, but we did not feel ignored. We are both in the industry for many years, I myself as a Maitre'D. The food was excellent. If the chef was on duty, I would liked to have seen him or she table visiting. A beautiful experience. Thank You. We will be back !"

  • "Decor nice, food ok.Gyro meat flavorless. Service slow, odd, despite only 2 tables occupied in entire restaurant. Ordered bottle of wine and waitress asked if i wanted to taste...or just have her pour it? Who does this?--always let customer taste- made me feel uncomfortable and unappreciated. This after originally ordering 2 glasses--which she never brought. Manager was there, but didn't chooose to check in with guests despite only 2 tables occupied. With $15 gyro, they give you 4 pita slices and lots of meat. We asked for some extra pita and sauce, they said that would be $1 for each pita and $150 for each sauce container. they don't seem to understand this is a couterproductive charge, because folks won't return again. We certainly won't."

  • "We know that when we comment all the way home how good our food was, that we ate at a really great restaurant! It was SO GOOD and full of flavor. Our bill wasn't cheap but well worth the Greek experience. I would highly recommend Basils!"

  • "My wife and I tried Basil's after reading an online article about the "Top 10 Restaurants Outside Chicago." We both consider ourselves adventurous palate seekers, so we decided to try Basil's. The Hostess greeted us warmly and seated us very promptly. When our server greeted us and took our drink orders, her demeanor went from "welcoming" to "apathetic," as we did not order cocktails or other adult beverages--clearly we could see she was thinking "not getting a big tip off these two." Our soup and dinner were quite tasty and filling. We were not a huge fan of Basil's "Aromatic Meat Sauce" - nutmeg is an accent flavor, not a main one! We had a nice get-away from our children for one evening, but do not think we're going to Basil's again. "

  • "My mother and I went here for Easter. We had made reservations through Open Table and noted that we needed a wheelchair accessible table. When we arrived, our table was ready with one chair already pulled away. This made us feel very welcome. The food was delicious - the taramasalata was especially good. Our waiter, Katy, was genuinely friendly and helpful. Some reviews mentioned a long wait, but when we were there, between 11 and 12 noon, it was not crowded and there was no wait. Highly recommend."

  • "Basils is a little out of the way, hidden on the back (west) side of Fox Valley shopping center, but worth your discovery. We've been there a number of times. Though a bit disappointed that the patio was not yet set up for outside dining, we were nonetheless well looked after by the hosts and servers, always quite friendly without being intrusive. The food there is consistently good and reasonably priced. It's a lovely place with a nice bar area, too, but do try the patio some day for lunch or on a warm evening. And don't forget to order their delicious and plentiful saganaki appetizer for a shared starter! And end with a great desert, if you have room."

  • "Basil's was picked by Thrillist as one of the 15 best restaurant's not located in Chicago and it's true. The wine list was excellent and then by surprise a Greek/Mediterranean restaurant had a top notch craft beer menu. The appetizers were a little expensive but worth it. Get the grilled octopus, it was excellent. For dinner we had the lemonita pasta which was served hot and it was awesome. Also went traditional and ordered the chicken kabob and it was hands down the best kabob I've ever had. Grilled and seasoned perfectly and enough for two. The Greek style green beans and Greek potatoes were very good too. To top it all off, our server was excellent, checked on us without being a bother and very friendly. We're definitely going back."

  • "Yes you can find great Greek Food in the far West Suburbs. Basils has all the Greek favorites that you would expect from South Halsted Street near the Fox Valley Mall. My wife loved the Pastichio and I had some outstanding Saganaki with Greek potatoes and green beans. We also shared some of the best Saganaki I have ever had along with some solid Avgolemono (egg lemon soup). We will be back."
