Diner Reviews
  • "First time at Basil. Experience was excellent. Will definitely return when we are in the Carmel area."

  • "If you go during lunch they have delicious asparagus ravioli that you will never forget!"

  • "the food was amazing, since the menu changes frequently it is always a fresh experience. The service was friendly and they handled our reservations well. overall a good experience."

  • "This was the third time we dined at Basil. After our first visit we were hooked and that is saying something when the choices in Carmel are amazingly good. The food is ever changing and beautifully displayed. The regular customers speak to the dependability and personal service you can expect. Try a winemaker dinner if you can."

  • "I just picked it off a list on the internet and was very pleased at the choice. The service was great as was the food. The seafood soup with shrimp, clams, mussels, and halibut was delicious as were the small dishes of lamb meatballs and abalone. We shall return."

  • "What a great place for a fabulous dinner before the ballet at Sunset Center. Food was fresh, unique and excellent. Something for every taste."

  • "If you are in the Monterey Peninsula area this is a great place for dinner. It is affordable ($20-$30 main course) and delicious. It is very small but very cute. The staff is excellent!"

  • "Overall, I have a hard time recommending this restaurant. Waitstaff did not seem interested in us, even though we were one of only two tables with people. The duck gnocchi seemed to be missing both duck and flavor. I did enjoy the salmon (although a bit dry) b/c of the celery root puree. Wine list is ordinary."

  • "A wonderful experience. The wait staff is the BEST! and the food is pretty fantastic."

  • "We came here for my birthday. I've been review stalking this restaurant for a while and have been impressed. So we started with drinks, their signature drinks are unique and flavorful. They have awesome vegetarian options. I had the roasted vegetables with spinach ravioli. Oh my goodness it was delicious. I recommend Basil for the vegetarian looking for something creative and delicious."

  • "We have been to Carmel many times but it was our first time to try Basil. The food and service were both excellent. The burrata, arugula, and pear salad was delicious and a different twist on burrata. We had had the special fesh fish, petrale sole with asparagus and their classic braised beef cheeks. Very different dishes but both w ere excellent. The decor is nothing special but the the food is well worth a visit. We would definitely go again!"

  • "Dined here Friday night on a girls weekend getaway. Was excited for seasonal and local fare. Was fairly underwhelmed with the menu selection. Definitely a "foodie" menu, beef cheeks, lamb meatballs, etc. The selection was small (although to be fair, so is the restaurant), and a little too eclectic for my taste. Should have researched the menu a bit more before making reservations. The service staff was extremely friendly. My biggest complaint was that the glass of wine served was EXTREMELY small, especially for a $14/glass (ouch). In a town that has so many lovely tasting rooms, their wine selection was small, pricey, and then to top it off we barely got more than you would at a tasting - where you'd get 4 pours for the same price or less."

  • "Cute, tiny little restaurant. GREAT food. Not the run-of-the-mill dishes and all outstanding. Small restaurant but comfortable. Lovely outside dining. Our only negative for the evening was that they sent one of the waiters home early thinking they would not have a big night and there was only one waiter and one busboy for the entire inside and outside restaurant. Made for very long waits between courses. The waiter and the busboy did their best, but not fair to them nor to the patrons. If not for that, would have given them five stars!! A must go to and we will be back."

  • "Stumbled upon this place the night we arrived. This unpretentious little place turns out very good food and is a decent value for Carmel. Loved it and will return."

  • "We chose this spot because of the vegan options. I arrived a little early for our reservation and was seated immediately. I was a little apprehensive because I had read how close the tables were together but I was seated at a very nice table at the end of the courtyard but it turned out to be fine. Bread and water came right away but the waiter didn't bother to come over until we were both seated. I would have liked to have ordered a glass of wine while I was waiting but it wasn't that much of an issue since my friend arrived within 15 minutes. I started with the beet salad. It was good, but in all honesty I have had better. I ordered the swordfish special with parsnip puree for my entree. It was amazingly delicous! Definitely a must try"

  • "We went for Valentine's Day and $162 for 2 people to have "3 quarter sized scallops, 3oz of beef cheek, soup, salad, and dessert" was way too expensive. Also, the advertising for the Valentine's special was poorly advertised. I would think a price on a couple's holiday would include both person's courses. And then you give away a complimentary glass of champagne...HAHA!"
    Dined on 2/14/2014
  • "We have had almost everything on the menu and then start again when they change it, and there is nothing we wouldn't try again. Basil is a great place to get delicious, creative food."
    Dined on 2/14/2014
  • "We loved the intimate and relaxed feel of Basil. The duck gnocchi was amazing! Our daily local seafood special of sea scallops on a bed of farro and fall veggies was very flavorful. Our glass of the local Pinot Noir was young and needed time to breathe; however, we did enjoy it with our meal. The warm, fresh olalliebrerry cobbler with vanilla gelato was a delightful end to a very good and enjoyable meal!"

  • "Dined at Basil for the third time and again it was a treat. I consider myself a drink snob. One of the main reasons I go to a restaurant is to enjoy the cocktails. No bar but they build a beautiful drink (I had an old fashion) which just starts everything off so well. I was there with three golfing buddies and we all had the special (short rib) and it was perfection. Then we had one of their wondefull desserts. I love this place and will continue to search it out every time I come to town."

  • "Basil is great. Small location, but great food and service"

  • "My husband and I enjoyed this restaurant. It's a small, cozy place to eat. Many of the tables are close together but we met a really nice couple next to us. The service and food were excellent The Waitress and Chef customized our meals and the couple next to us. We were very restrictive with our ingredients and the chef was able to come up with creative and delicious options while maintaining wonderful presentation. Price is moderate to high and portions were small to med. I would go back."

  • "Basil is small but nice. The food was very good and unique enough to be interesting."

  • "The three people at our table had the cauliflower cream soup, the autumn gnocci, the lamb meatballs, the shaved brussels sprouts salad and the roasted beet salad and all were delicious. We also shared Pumpkin Cheese Cake with Vanilla Sauce and Rum soaked Dried Plums. The cheese cake was light, moist, and tasty and the rum soaked dried plums were incredible. I am not sure if they always put three on the plate but they did this time so we could each have one. The service is always attentive and very pleasant. Definitely a place worth frequenting."

  • "Accommodates vegans and meat-eaters well and even your dog. Highly recommend."

  • "We were very happy with the lunch at Basil. The salmon sandwich and black squid ink linguine were both quite tasty. The wait staff was very attentive. This is a place worth a return visit."
    Dined on 1/4/2014
  • "Everything was delicious from bread to dessert. The portions are not big, but sufficient. Not enough inside sitting. A little hard to find on a quiet alleyway. Will definitely go there again."
    Dined on 1/3/2014
  • "Abalone was great. Had to wait for main courses too long."
    Dined on 12/30/2013
  • "We have eaten at Basil's on several occasions now, mostly because of their emphasis on organic foods and local sourcing of ingredients. The food selections are always well-prepared and interesting. The service this time was quite slow---perhaps just a busy time of year or a short-staffed situation...would still return and recommend to others with patience!"

  • "We visit Carmel often and make sure to eat each visit at Basil. Favorite with the locals. Usually crowded, but worth the wait. Service is great and the food is better."
    Dined on 12/26/2013
  • "I am in Carmel several times a year on business and always try to eat here at least once while I'm in town. Food is wonderful...fresh, inventive, perfectly prepared, beautifully presented. Service is attentive without being intrusive. It is a small place and can feel a little cramped with tables close together, but don't let that stop you. A meal here is an experience you don't want to miss."
    Dined on 12/7/2013
  • "This is probably one the the best places to eat in the Monterey Bay area. The food is wonderful, and the service is excellent. It's also one of the few places one can get squid ink pasta, a very special treat. Also, try the lamb meatball appetizer."
    Dined on 12/5/2013
  • "You have got to have the lamb meatballs - - awesome!! This is our second time and the food and hospitality are exceptional!"
    Dined on 12/6/2013
  • "Everything was fine - but the hostess was super rude and spoke to us with phony inflections."
    Dined on 11/30/2013
  • "We were 2 adults and 2 kids hoping for a special place to dine for a birthday and Basil came very close to fulfilling this. The venison, rib-eye beef and beef ribs (divided for the kids - no kids menu) were beautifully presented and very delicious. The waiter was very knowledgeable and made some excellent wine recommendations. The only (albeit small) downside was the slight claustrophobic, loud and very warm internal ambience which made us all quite drowsy - but that may just have been all of the sea air we'd consumed beforehand. Carmel is a joy and is blessed with such a cute restaurant with a wonderful reputation for local, sustainably produced seasonal food."

  • "Great California food with excellent service. The staff run the place like each one of them own it. They are passionate and you can tell love what they do."
    Dined on 11/10/2013
  • "Very much enjoyed the locally sourced organic food that was presented in creative ways. After our first night there, we decided to come back for a second. Also enjoyed the local grappa sampler we had for dessert."
    Dined on 11/10/2013
  • "This is a very small restraurant. The food is thoughtful and well done. I ate alone and was very comfortable."
    Dined on 11/3/2013
  • "We found the food to be excellent. Inventive and delicious. However we were a table fo 7 and the tables were simply too small so we could not have bread, water, drinks, and appetizers on our table at the same time. it was an annoyance in an otherwise very nice experience. Also, there was some strident music playing for the first ten-20 minutes. It did not match the upscale dining experience."
    Dined on 10/27/2013
  • "Butternut squash ravioli and short ribs were both great."
    Dined on 10/24/2013
  • "Two of us got the "short ribs" and when it arrived, it was actually brisket - it was good - but not what we expected (and we didn't have time to send it back and wait for something else). The food was good, and I may give it another try, but it wasn't so good that I am going to rush back."
