Diner Reviews
  • "Had dinner saturday night and sat inside since the patio had a long wait. Our server was a bit brusqe and forgot some of our orders. The food itself came out really quickly though and it was all really good except dessert. We had the crispy oysters, mustard crusted trout and the short ribs which we really liked. The lemon cheesecake was really dense and the crust was not that great but it was decent. I think I'd come back for the patio which is always nice."

  • "Tough decision but we decided to eat inside only because it was chilly after the sun set....we had just as much fun inside, our server was amazing, made our experience even that much more enjoyable. We shared a ceaser salad, lobster bisque, fried oyesters. My husband had the short ribs, I had the trout. Everything was beautifully presented and amazing in quality and taste."

  • "Basi always does it right! Food is the freshest and more originally prepared. We were there a bit early in the evening and service was a tad different than usual but overall just so outstanding! I only wish they had the chocolate balls for desert that night I was there!"

  • "My husband and I went to celebrate my birthday. The food was delicious and the service was so friendly and helpful. It's small and intimate. Great for a romantic dinner for a special occasion."

  • "Cozy, small, quaint, authentic Italian ambiance. Wonderful service, awesome menu...good wine list. A must try, very enjoyable dinner out. We will go back. It was hard to choose because there was so many enticing items on the menu, including several specials."

  • "As soon as my friends and i finished our last bite, we all agreed that we could never eat again....that there will never be another meal that would top this! We all had different appetizers and entrees. Each of us raved about our meals and had to share. It was unbelievable how delicious and perfectly prepared each dish was. And the Sea salt caramel creme brulee...there are no words to describe this. Our server, Matt was knowledgable and charming and fun. My one friend is very hard to please and she was blown away. We will be back for sure. I will come alone if i have to!"

  • "We spent our 1st anniversary at Basi. Very cool vibe, food awesome. Our only issue was that our special entree (meatballs on polenta), was cold by the time we ate it. Other than that, great experience and we certainly will go back!"

  • "My boyfriend and I went here for the first time for our anniversary. We actually live very close so it was a lovely walk. We were seated right away and the Host and our server all wished us a Happy Anniversary which we thought was a nice, personal touch. Food and drinks were amazing. Definitely going to be going back soon."

  • "I love this restaurant for an impressive dinner that is delicious every time and within walking distance. I love Italy and consider Basi's Italian cuisine unique and upscale with quality ingredients and creative presentation. I can count on Basi for any special occasion. I have found it difficult to carry on business due to high noise level. That's my only point of negative criticism."

  • "I had heard good things about Basi for years but some reason never went until recently. The location is a little strange, the entrance is off of what I would consider an alley, not a main street. We were seated immediately and our server was great - she told us about the history of the restaurant and the specials that day. Our food was inventive, cooked properly, and delicious. Service was attentive but not overbearing. It is a tiny restaurant though and the tables are right on top of each other, so it felt a little cramped. After dinner, we retired to the bar area for another drink. I asked for a Jack Daniels and the bartender told me they were out - how does a bar run out of Jack Daniels? Overall, a very nice experience."

  • "A friend and colleague frequents Basi Italia and recommended it. Once per year, my bride and I enjoy a dinner at a local restaurant of this type and Basi Italia was our choice this year. I had read the backstory and listened to interviews with the owners. It was the kind of place I wanted to visit. What surprised me the most were the prices, in a good way. You can easily rack up $75/person at Basi if you drink, enjoy an appetizer, and splurge for desert. But if you don't, you can also eat here for as little as $17/person. My wife and I are teetotalers, but I had the lobster bisque and we both had desert. Our bill was $68 and the food was worth the money. We're already planning to return with friends."

  • "The food here is right up there with the best (and priciest) Italian I've had in NYC. It is such a friendly, loving place, and the dishes are innovative. However, they do still carry a few old favorites like the eggplant parmesan. The waiters are obviously a part of the restaurant family. It is a very small place when the weather does not allow for patio dining, so it can be close quarters. Make a reservation or you probably won't get in."

  • "Very close quarters, which is part of the charm, unless you a large person or hard of hearing! We had a wonderful dinner and a terrific waitress. My 6'7" son admitted to feeling a bit squished but we will definetely be back."

  • "Basi is one of my favorites. The food is always amazing and the service is great! I can't wait until it warms up enough to sit on their great patio!"

  • "We had a wonderful early dinner before a show! Waitress and entire staff were very friendly and energetic! They loved their work and believed in the product! So wonderful...no wonder this place stays on the top! We will be back."

  • "This off the beaten path restaurant was excellent! All three of us had different meals: I had the special of salmon wrapped in bacon with pesto cream sauce and roasted vegetables. Not sure I was going to like the bacon on salmon. It was delicious! It had just the right mix of flavors. I also had their soup- vegetable minestrone with was excellent. One of us had the short ribs and one the prosciutto wrapped scallops. Both were excellent! It is a very small restaurant which can make for a noisy evening. Ask for a table by the window. The outdoor patio looked delightful but not fof our cold evening. Service was excellent and fast! Definitely a great restaurant."

  • "This is a wonderful Chef-owner restaurant in the heart of Victorian Village that I couldn't recommend enough. It is a great "foodie" restaurant. The food is amazing and there a wonderful bar. The back patio is wonderful even in the dead of winter!"

  • "Food and service was excellent and the noise level was tolerable. The only negative is how small and tight the space was. Not even a place to wait to be seated. Don't know how the waiters get to the tables with food and drinks without spilling on someone."

  • "Great atmosphere, very SoHo like in ambience and energy. The patio is enclosed and open almost year round, great dinner inside but the patio after was even more fun. The Owner, John and his wife attending to customers is always a treat! Highly recommend"

  • "Restaurant was recommended by my daughter. Food and service did not disappoint. Received good recommendations from waiter on meal choices and a great recommendation on a single malt scotch."

  • "BAsi is one of the best restaurants in Columbus. I prefer o eat here in the warmer months as there is little space inside and it is crowded ands noisy. Good service and the menu looked great as usual. Appetizers were good but I had the trout and the kitchen burnt the entire side of the fish (breading) and simply served that side down on the plate. FIsh is easy to burn but should not have been served at a good restaurant like this. Server apologized but no discounts. Mistakes can happen anywhere but when a kitchen burns something like your entrée, apologize for the delay and make a fresh one, don't serve it."

  • "My boyfriend and I went to this restaurant for our Valentine's celebration. All the reviews said it was a great place, but when we got there I was surprised at how small it was. It was really cramped and I felt like we right on top of the couple sitting next to us. The food was amazing though and the service was great. I would probably would visit again but not on a weekend night, and definitely not on a holiday."

  • "It was very good all around and also very New Yorkish. Small and loud but a cheerful loudness....everyone around us was having a good time as were we. The food was terrific and the server, who has a difficult job navigating, was also terrific.."

  • "While Columbus Ohio sometimes seems to lack any real food stars, Basi Italia is well on its way. Creative menu, attentive staff and well thought out wine selections made our February 15, 2014 dinner a real treat. This is not your neighborhood pasta palace, but Italian food prepared with simple recipes and fresh ingredients. Try the eggplant parmesan, fried oyster appetizer and anything on the dessert menu. Well done Basi Italia!"

  • "The last two times I have been there, someone in my party had a problem with food temperature. The kitchen needs to be sure they send out hot food. I don't want to fall out of love..."

  • "This continues to be one of the my favorite restaurants in town. Creative, strong flavors, local, healthful ingredients whenever possible, and actually quite reasonably priced for what you get. I've never been disappointed at Basi - except when they're out of the Special, but even in that case my disappointment is always short-lived. They're also quite flexible about bending the menu on request to make almost anything gluten-free. It's hard to go wrong. Negatives for some - space is tight, sometimes hard to get a reservation, can be a bit loud at times because of small space (but all part of a positive neighborhood ambiance for me)."

  • "We enjoyed the food and the service was terrific. Given the small space, they have done an excellent job of making the place pleasant, but the tables are very close together...you can't help but completely hear your neighbors' conversations. The closeness also contributes to a high noise level. I'd love for Basi to move to a larger space."

  • "This is by far the best and most original restaurant in Columbus. If you want fantastic food that can't be found anywhere else...this is the place for you!!!"

  • "Our food was very good - my Caesar salad was delicious, our portobello mushroom appetizer was really, really good (sadly, it was a special). My entree was a shrimp carbonara - but I am positive that mine didn't have any bacon on/in it! If it did, I certainly couldn't taste it. Very disappointing. My wife got bacon wrapped scallops (another special) and they were very, very good. The most annoying part of the trip was that we were seated near the door (really, every table is near the door), and every time it opened, a blast of arctic air smacked us hard. Don't go when it's very cold - wait until the spring."

  • "I loved basi in the past recommended it to many of my friends but this last time it missed the mark for me. Staff was great as usual. We were seated by the window and it was cold I did not take my coat off the entire meal except to use the restroom which was also freezing. My boyfriend sent his first meal back (short ribs) which we never do because they just didn't taste that good the sauce was too sweet and his replacement meal was average at best. I received the wrong dish at first which they quickly corrected the error. My mushroom risotto and endive salad were both very good. It was just a rare night out and missed the mark a little bit this time."

  • "Sat at a table where every server and customer ran into us. The restaurant was very cold as was the food. The clams were cold and under seasoned. The scallops were also cold and somewhat underdone. Don't waste the calories on the dessert. Service was poor. Diners arriving long after our table were served first? I use to rave about this place, but they have definitely lost their mojo."

  • "Basi Italia is truly one of my favorite restaurants in Columbus. It's small, somewhat hidden, and oozes charm. The wine list is robust, the food is just right, and the patio is magical. This is a perfect date spot. Not only for the aforementioned qualities but because there's a solid chance your date won't have been here before. Five stars!"
