Diner Reviews
  • "I had researched online about a location in Montrose and this place called Bashan was among 20 of the most underrated restaurants in Los Angeles. After our experience I can see why that is the case. According to our waitress' Elizabeth the restaurant has been in existence since 2007. We got great service but the food just stood out. Few of the items in our menu that stood out were steak, aragula salad with crispy pecans, eel, and the Belgian beer called St Bernardus Wit. Will definitely come back for another special occasion. Here is the link for the that we tried at Bashan: http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/259/7879/ BevMo website does not carry it at the time I inquired."

  • "I visited few MIchelin star restaurants is US and was quite impressed with the Bashan. Great presentation, creative menu, food tastes as good as it looks (but it comes at price of course). We went for LA restaurant week, and ordered wine pairings which I absolutely loved. Bashan is a great choice for special occasions."

  • "All of the entrees were outstanding: Scottish Salmon, Duck Breast, Scallops and aged New York Steak. The Arugula salad and Pork Belly appetizer were amazing, and the chocolate bread pudding with vanilla ice cream was to die for. But we were uncomfortable during the entire meal because we were sitting under a vent with a cold draft blowing on us. We asked two of the staff members to adjust the temperature and they said they did, but we noticed no difference. In addition, the wait staff seemed very inexperienced. Our waiter could not explain the preparations, or the wine list. we were not properly checked on or asked if we needed anything. The Chef at Bashan is excellent, but the wait staff needs training."

  • "Generous portions, an intimate atmosphere, a handful of tables: everything you want to feel like this is your neighborhood place - but you're from out of town. Be sure to make a reservation as it gets crowded from 7-8. Lots of fish and meat options but vegetarians may want to stay away."

  • "Bashan always serves up great food in a cozy bistro atmosphere. I had scallops. Others enjoyed skirt steak and salmon. Each was a unique take on the dish. Very tasty with lovely presentation. Enjoy the use of spices. Skirt steak is a great deal, too. They have a small but selective wine list."

  • "We will definitely go back again! The food is creative and overall reasonably priced. The yellowtail sashimi was excellent. They offer free corkage Tuesday-Thursday on wines from Rosso wine shop next door."

  • "Came on a Thursday evening, few customers, place was about 25% full. We ordered the lobster risotto for appetizer, wild scallops and wild halibut for main entrees, and cheesecake for dessert. The service was excellent. The food was disappointing. The risotto was tasty but the lobster meat was tough. The scallops had a mild bitterness, maybe from the star squash, but essentially tasteless. The halibut was good. The cheesecake tasted like it's been in the refrigerator too long! We will not recommend this place if you want good food."

  • "We have been enjoying this local find since they opened. Their menu is always interesting and broad enough for everyone, their 3, 5, and 7 course dinners always a delight. Whenever we bring guests they always rave and are greatly enjoy the meals and evening. Chocolate bread pudding is outstanding...."

  • "Bashan is a beautiful moonstone culled from a memorable walk on the beach, that I only want to pull out of my pocket to share with my closest friends. It is an intimate space, tastefully decorated, and the food is simple exquisite. Yes, there are seasonal and occasionally exotic ingredients, but each component adds to the whole balance of the dish, and nothing is extraneous. Plates are so artistically composed that I always stop to just soak in the visual before plunging in with my fork. The service is exceptional, and the menu contains just the right number of offerings to allow the chef to focus his talents to the maximum degree. The prix fixe menu is a great value, and the wine pairings are always spot on."

  • "The salmon roe amuse bouche was delicious. We ordered the pork belly app, as this was just so perfect last visit. Again, it did not disappoint. Regarding entrees, he salmon itself is very bland, but if eaten with all the components together, it is very nice and full of flavor. The Asian style pork loin was good but light on seasoning and without the bold Asian inspired flavors expected. For dessert, the buttermilk panna cotta with pomegranate granita and calamata olive caramel was tasty and unique. Each course was portioned generously. I realized this much more after having eaten at both Trois Mec and Maude, where their multiple course menus did not leave us as satiated as this 3 course meal, and for a fraction of the cost at $40 pp."

  • "Really great food at small locals type location. Plenty of variety for the foodies out there. Enough good wines without the Bible size of choices."

  • "Excellent food. A good choice of Appetizers, Entrees and Desserts. You must try the Pork Belly "Adobo" appetizer and Buttermilk Panna Cotta dessert. But everything we've tried so far is very good. Excellent value - $40 Prix Fixe 3 Course menu Tuesday -Thursday with a $15 wine pairing. Even the coffee (French Press) I had with dessert was very good."

  • "We did the 7 course tasting menu this time and it was delightful. Most of the starters were seafood, but they do check with you in advance regarding food allergies etc. Every course was delicious and exquisitely presented, fresh and unique. Great service and the price is so much more reasonable than equivalent quality on the westside. We bought a bottle of wine off the wine list, and the corkage was waived on the one we brought with us. They have a nice wine list that isn't outrageous price wise, or stop next door at the little wine shop with some interesting picks from all over the world."

  • "Friends took to here for my birthday and in a month I've been back 5 times. Spring is a busy birthday month - so I've brought everyone here. We've all tasted everything - and it's wonderful!! I recommend everything - the duck is out of this world, halibut - amazing, beef cheek OMG!, salads are so fresh and inventive, risotto - melt in your mouth. . And the staff -- all lovely. Go here for any occasion -- and stop in at the wine store next door - great select and tastings.c"

  • "Bashan offers a contemporary and warm atmosphere, excellent service, and innovative delicious food. The prix fixe menu for $40 is a good deal offering 3 courses with several options. I had the pork belly adobo, which was succulent, crispy, and well seasoned; the roasted duck breast, cooked perfectly; and the coffee tiramisu, creamy and just sweet enough. My companion enjoyed the braised beef cheek, which was very delicious and the crème fraiche cheesecake, deconstructed with ice cream on the side, a little ball of heaven! Bashan is a jewel in a quaint neighborhood. You will enjoy it."

  • "We went here for my birthday on Wednesday night. The server was very attentive and knowledgeable on the menu items. This is our favorite restaurant in Glendale that we go to on special occasions and this night was no different. Great food, great service, well done Bashan."

  • "This is a delightful restaurant. The four of us ate outside - it was quiet and we never felt like they forgot us because we were out there. The food is interesting, fresh, flavorful - and makes you moan a little at first bite. We loved all for of our meals - and starters. Nice interesting wine list --- and some yummy desserts. Go."

  • "I feel very fortunate to have this calibre of a restaurant in nearby (to me) Montrose/Glendale. There is not the effort of driving to Pasadena, Los Angeles or Glendale along with the hassle of parking. The food is wonderful and I love to take advantage of the Tuesday - Thursday Prix Fixe menu with wine pairings. I tell all my friends and family this is my favorite area restaurant (and let them take me there for special occasions)."

  • "I have been to Bashan now about 5 times and I always bring someone new. I'm always raving about this restaurant and am nervous that when I bring a new guest, it might not be as good as I claim. But it never disappoints. It's always SO amazingly delicious and well thought out. My guests always enjoy and are wowed. Thanks Bashan for living up to my hype and never disappointing. :)"

  • "I'm a returning customer and I lived in the area for 19 years. The transformation of this place over years was great. I think the food was a hit and miss. My friend ordered the scallops. The presentation was confusing and it wasn't as presentable as the one I ordered which was the duck. The scallops were scattered on the plate including the side dishes. It looks like the chef was trying to fill the plate to make it full, I don't know. The place can be romantic if there were table cloth on the table. It's a lovely place and there's plenty of potential. We will return to try the rest of the food."

  • "This sweet petite eatery may not be known by many. Especially nessled in Montrose but it delivers some good eating. They make a delicious kale salad. I wish it was a bigger serving! And we had a fantasticp Halibut entree. We will plan on coming back!"

  • "Evidently this restaurant got voted LA's Most Underrated Restaurant. If everyone who eats there rates it, it'll lose that standing soon. We tried several dishes. All delicious and artfully prepared. How can a skirt steak be that tender and rich?! The scallops melt in your mouth. The decor was simple and well maintained including the restroom which generally fails miserably elsewhere. The relaxing ambience allows for a quiet conversation. The servers (plural) were top-notch; very attentive but seemed invisible unless we engaged them in conversation. Had theater tickets so can't wait to go back to spend more time with a great glass of wine to soak it all up and top it off with dessert. We'd rate this restaurant as extraordinary."

  • "Totally impressed by this place. Didn't know such a gourmet place existed in my neighborhood. The food was amazing, great beer list, awesome dessert, and very cute decor. Can't say enough good things. The scallops were a tad too salty, but it wasn't a big deal at all. Yum! Can't wait to go back."

  • "We celebrated my wife and daughter's birthdays and were delighted with the prompt but unobtrusive and intelligent wait staff. We had the 5-course Tasting Menu, all servings were just enough and very tasty. We have eaten at Bashan's many times in the past and have never had a better experience than this time and the last time. Over the years it has come far in our opinion in all the components that make for an outstanding restaurant, more than worth the six-mile drive for us. We highly recommend Bashan's, which is not inexpensive but you more than get what you pay for. It is an outstanding destination for special occasions."

  • "I love the warm feel of the restaurant. The lighting and decor make it feel like a special night out. We had the 5 course tasting menu with wine. I highly recommend it. They customize the selections per table based on anything on the menu you may not want to eat. We had sashimi, salmon, beef and pork belly. It was all delicious. The wine paired perfectly with each course. Can't wait to go back to try the summer tasting menu."
