Diner Reviews
  • "The menu options were varied and all sounded wonderful, including the specials for the evening. The small plates were delicious including the tuna tartare and curry mussels. As well, the salt and pepper prawns and shaking beef entrees were incredible. Our server was helpful and knowledgeable."

  • "Consistently one of the best dining experiences in Louisville, or just about anywhere for that matter. The food is prepared meticulously and with flair. Not cheap, but worth every penny. Cocktails are outstanding, too."

  • "The food was awesome! Went with a party of seven and everyone left happy!"

  • "Great food! I wanted to experience some different ethnic foods, and Basa did not disappoint! I love some of the comfinations of ingredients that I would never think to put together (scallops with figs ontop of grits with cheese)... Wonderful! I'll be bringing out of town guests in for a visit to show off Louisville!"

  • "I would recommend to anyone. Food was out of this world. Service was a bit washy from our main server. But other picked up the slack. Can't blame the whole place for one slow/forgetful server. A must try establishment. We will be back."

  • "I hadn't been to Basa in a while and decided to take a visiting friend there for dinner. It was the best choice I could have made! The food was sublime, the service wonderful. I'll go back much sooner than last time!"

  • "I had the ribeye special and my girlfriend had the Shaking Beef. Both were excellent. Service was very good too."

  • "We've been to Basa several times over the last five years and the food has slowly declined each time. The specials used to be "special" , now a Vietnamese restaurant is serving steak and potatoes as a special. I've had everything on the menu and everything is too salty. We really used to love Basa but with all of the great restaurants now open around Louisville it has fallen way behind and I won't be back."

  • "A gem of a place, superior service without being invasive, delicious food, nice people."

  • "I really enjoyed the food. I got the shaking beef and it was delicious. The service was seamless and attentive. I really enjoyed catching up with friends. When the restuarant got busy, it did get a little loud for such small quarters. I will return again and recommend to friends and family."

  • "The food was delicious and promptly served. The portions were quite small and apparently the rice they serve is a ration. I had the shaking beef and loved to mix it with the rice. Unfortunately there was not enough sauce to make it work. My girlfriend ordered the special, which was scallops. They were very well done, but not having enough sauce, they had a rather bland taste.I still believe that the food was tasty, but considering the price (over $80 for two persons) would not recommend it unless it was a special occasion."

  • "If you like very flavorful meals, Basa is not to be missed. I've never been disappointed with a meal there. Chili lime mussels are a great starter. The eggplant dish is one of the best vegetarian meals anywhere. Definitely recommend this place. Service was a little slow, but other than that I have no complaints."

  • "This was our third trip to Basa. Loved it the first time, but very disappointed the second and third. Both times the place was FREEZING and our food was cold. Not going back and will not recommend."

  • "As always, Basa was wonderful. I'm finding a pattern when we fine here that I'm happy to share. No matter what the soup of the day is, just get it. All the food is wonderful but the soups are always amazing!"

  • "The food was all delicious and modern, but it never lost the Vietnamese feel. Service was excellent, and the choice of music was impeccable. Between the food and the atmosphere, this is a great place for a romantic date."

  • "My wife and I have been to Basa at least six times in the past three years. We live in Elizabethtown and whenever we decide we want to try something else we can never choose and pick there anyway. Love the atmosphere, decor, service and most of all, what else, the food is melt in your mouth delicious!"

  • "The best part of the meal was the Thai basil mussels which were flavored nicely and cooked to perfection. Everything else fell flat. The spring rolls were so-so, better could be had at most holes-in-the-wall. My husband had the Ahi for his entrée. While the cut of fish was beautiful, it was very under seasoned. I had the salt and pepper prawns which were just ok. I expected fewer and much larger prawns, but received a plate of basic fried shrimp tossed in sauce. They were flavorful but nothing unique. My friend had the beef salad which we did enjoy. We had the chocolate cake with pumpkin gelato and berry compote. It was a lot going on but I liked it ok. No one else did though."

  • "The food at Basa was very good. Although given that it was Vietnamese restaurant I was disappointed in the lack of Pho. But, we had an appetizer and an entree and both were very good. My only other complaint was the noise level but that's to be expected in a small setting that is completely full."

  • "A wonderful and diverse menu at Basa is unfortunately marred by slow service from both the bar and the kitchen. We were there on a Saturday night, so it was crowded. Perhaps the restaurant wasn't staffed properly for this big a crowd. Regardless, it simply took too long to get both drinks and food. The other problem with the bar is skimpy volume on the drinks. The really good restaurants we frequent are not afraid to pour a generous portion, but that's not the case here. The food, however, is great. We had two different salads and two different entrees, all of which were delectable, with multiple and subtle favors emanating from each bite. It was almost worth the wait."

  • "The food has always been good, though we noticed that they are now serving much smaller portion sizes. They have a very limited list of wine by the glass, but we enjoyed what we chose. Service is always good."

  • "The fried oysters are wonderful! Could make a meal on either these or the curried mussels. Both unique to Basa and not equaled elsewhere in town. The Pho was, however, lacking in substance. I would pass on this again. The Tuna and the scallops, are indeed well worth it. Wine list is affordable and decent, yet limited. Good beers. Service is great and Stephen greets you at the door and makes everyone feel special. A great experience."

  • "I have been to Basa many times, but not for about 6 months. Great to have the same great food and service. The menu is interesting, always great seafood (I had the shrimp and one of my colleagues had the scallops). Good bar and nice, not overly large wine list. Pricing is great and it made for a very nice evening."

  • "This restaurant is really a fantastic find. I have been very impressed with the very warm welcome, the smiles upon my arrival. The staff is very professional, friendly. Cocktails were very good and very original. The food was of great quality, served at the right time and with the appropriate quantity... These veggie spring rolls were.... Fantastic! The salt and pepper prawns were delicious. I recommend this restaurant...mans please: keep this fantastic lounge atmosphere going.... NASA is a local gem."

  • "Initial thought yummy, then after a few more bites, the overwhelming salt takes over your palette. That's really my only complaint, but we probably will not return. I like my heart healthy......"

  • "The restaurant ran out off tuna and two people in our party wanted to order that, then we got the recommendation of ordering the duck which turn to be not a pleasant dish, kind of a soup with a really strong flavor. We had been there before and this time a little disappointed."

  • "The food is as innovative and the ingredients as fresh as one will find in Louisville. All 4 of us were delighted by our dinner, and we were happy to introduce our friends to Basa. They had the mistaken idea that the cuisine was merely along the lines of Thai or Viet Namese, but Basa is so much more electric than that. We will definitely be back."

  • "The restaurant is laid out in a "shot-gun" manner, i.e. very narrow and long, and has low ceilings. Therefore, the tables are very close together and it makes it impossible to carry on a conversation because of the noise level. The restaurant has a "some plate" theme, but the prices are certainly not set according to the size of the portions. After seeing so many frankly better "small plate" restaurants like Avalon, etc. go under you would think these places would learn that people really don't want to overpay for a very lite dinners. Sorry, but the atmosphere is way too laud, the prices are too high, and the portions too small. We will not be going back unless all this changes."

  • "The food was surprisingly good and well prepared and presented. The service was attentive. However, the noise level was unsatisfactory. The dining area is small and sparsely decorated. Therefore, all the noises reverberate from wall to wall to ceiling and make it impossible to carry on a normal conversation. Wall tapestries or other noise abatement measures for both the walls and the ceiling would work wonders for this establishment."
