Diner Reviews
  • "Admittedly, my husband and I visited Barter to try the food, not revel in the ambiance. We were seated next to the most obnoxious table. They were loud and disturbing the tables around them. Unfortunately the food wasn't good enough to overcome this. Truthfully, even if the environment had been more relaxed, I still would have left saying, "Meh, it was okay." The poutine did nothing to distinguish itself from the gravy-smothered fries everyone else is serving right now. The "Coke float" that came with dessert was a float in name only. More like a thimble of Coke with the odd texture of what once was ice cream. It seemed to be the first thing made in our dessert when it should have been the last."

  • "The ribeye steak was outstanding!!!!! The fried fish was excellent!! Those were the table favorites. I will say the burger looked really good! Our service was excellent!"

  • "Had brunch outside in great weather which was fantastic. The food was good but we went for brunch and I wasn't blown away by any means. Pricey for what you pay for but they did have live music which good. There would be other brunch places I would choose first to go for brunch. Didn't get to try the regular menu."

  • "We were very excited to dine at Barter last Saturday night as I had been to the bar previously. The dining side this particular night was very dissappointing. Our waiter (for a table of 5) missed the mark on many areas...including being friendly, having any clue on the menu both food or cocktail lists, keeping cocktails and water flowing, checking in to see if we needed anything, or just being an enthused server. Definitely seem like he had already checked out and wanted us gone. The place was not busy so would assume tips might be welcomed from us. The waiter helping t. he table next to us seemed to have gone to the same wait staff academy as he was very condescending to his table and downright rude. Atleast we didn't have him...."

  • "I was expecting a little more of a restaurant, but it is a bar that serves a-cut-above bar food. Now I know, my mistake"

  • "Time Love does it again in Uptown Dallas. A cool rustic setting gives life to reenergized unique takes on classic dishes. Chili Crab Fajitas, Roasted Chicken Pasta, Shrimp &Toast, and more reflect the classic Tim Love style. The charcuterie board is artfully layed out as a starter with a couple home made sausages, hand selected cheeses, and pickled fruits and veggies. Cocktails were unique and well layered to compliment the tone of the restaurant. All in all a great experience that would lend a second return to sample more of the excellent menu."

  • "The food was amazing and the service was great. Tito was so helpful in guiding me toward the right dishes to order according to my preferences. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a great new fine dining experience."

  • "When think back on my life, there are the restaurants and dives that seem to blend with my soul... Those places that feel like the comfort of a warm blanket on a Sunday afternoon. Barter might just be one of those joints. If there is any piece of Texas that has invaded your soul, it will resonate when you step into the rustic but refined, casual and comfortable atmosphere. And the food... Come hungry. It's like your favorite BBQ joint had a love child with really good food festival. And the drinks... If you don't know Rocco then you don't know jack."

  • "My husband and I love the bar at this restaurant. The craft cocktails are simply outstanding. I have never been disappointed when I have asked them to make up a drink for me. The food is also excellent. The small plates are great and my husband can't stop talking about the lamb. This place is a must try!"

  • "We had a great first experience. Cocktails were amazing and the food was fresh and delicious. Love the option of ordering the small dishes as appetizers to share with the table. Large dish favorites were the chili crab fajitas and the crispy bronzini. We stayed with cocktails and never moved to wine, but all my favorites are on their list. Service was just the right amount of attention, and the timing of the food was perfect. Can't wait to go back!"

  • "Awful service. Boring ambience. Average food. Not coming back."

  • "They have the best lamb I've ever had. It isn't gamey and cooked perfectly with spices. The cocktails compliment the meal well just ask them to make you one. Go eat and drink here !"

  • "The bar was one of the most comfortable I've been to for a drink w friends: nice decor, super comfortable barstools, attentive service. The bartender even "created" a vodks jalapeño drink I asked for. The dining room was nice. Comfortable seating & good light. We sat in front of the private room & there was an incessant beeping noise that almost caused us to leave. Our server said it was from "the projector" . Not enjoyable. Service was very attentive & we shared several small plates. Very good. Crab Fajitas were terrific. The valet dented my car & of course didn't point it out. I called Barter the next day & though the manager was "sorry" she was quick to point out that they are "totally separate" from the Valet co."

  • "The food was not "wow" inducing, but their drinks were top notch. Everyone did enjoy their dinner, I just expected for their concept and price for it to be really awesome. However, the only notable party of my dinner was that the farm chicken thighs were oddly spicy (there was no indication for this), as was the tempura salad but that one indicated chilies, and the tenderloin sandwich was dry. The host was annoyed that we added an extra person to our reservation, though she made it work for us in the end. And our waitress seemed annoyed with us too, but the other staff that brought food /cleared the table, were all friendly. It was a mixed experience. It is a lovely, lovely spot."

  • "This wasn't the first time I had been to Barter and it was still as amazing as the first time that I went. The hostesses are always polite and inviting as soon as you walk in. The food and service are always great and the ambiance just adds to the experience! Barter is definitely one of my favorite places in Dallas ."

  • "Took my wife here for Valentines Day as I had heard a great review of the place on the radion by Steve Kimbell (sp?) about the drinks and the Poutine (sp?). We had a great time but most noticeable was the service we were given from the second we walked in from a very nice hostess to our wonderful waiter Craig. Overall, would return for drinks as the main meal wasn't anything to write home about but--we both had special which were crusted fish dish and pork shank. The shank was very fatty even for someone like me who loves to eat grissel and fat. The fish was good. Anyway, plan to give it another shot as the service will bring me back for sure. Thanks Craig for the level of service an all the education you have us about our drinks."

  • "Ordered the Beef tenderloin sandwich.....dry, tasteless and.......like cardboard.... Fish and chips: fish cooked well, but no flavor, even with malt vinegar (Better to have used a store bought blend, than the housemade. Waiter said took the sandwich off the bill, but did not....will not be back.... Too bad! Menu looked interesting and appetizing"

  • "The place is very nice, lots of wood. We ordered the steak (NY Strip) and it turned out to be very fatty, making it hard to eat and probably not too healthier either. The service was very good and they would be checking up in a timely fashion."

  • "It was a great experience. Our waiter was super nice and his recommendations were spot on. The Tempura Bucatini Salad was incredible. I've already recommended it to several people and will be returning."

  • "Despite having to tell our waiter out order twice, this was one of the best restaurants and outing experiences we've had in uptown dallas. Food/drinks were fabulous and we are looking forward to going back."

  • "Our server, Chris, was very helpful, but the food lacked flavor. I did enjoy the crudo, but the buffalo short ribs were actually spare ribs and were almost inedible."

  • "So there was not much a crowd but give it time... great lunch spot!"

  • "My visit to Barter was disappointing. In fairness the only food I had was the fish and chips. It consisted of a small portion of mushy cod with a soggy coating. The fries were average. Overall the menu appears over priced for what is coming out of the kitchen. Others at my table were underwhelmed with their food as we'll."

  • "The food was average...a mix of family style dishes and individual dishes. The menu is relatively small, so definitely not for everyone. The atmosphere/decoration are great though! Definitely a fun place to come for drinks and apps. I recommend the poutine...french fries with gravy and cheese (homestyle cooking)."

  • "My wife is choosey about steak, and I was surprised when she said the tenderloin was the best she'd had--maybe ever. We came back two weeks later and she said it was just as good as the first time. I had the bologna sandwich. Yep...bologna. But it was exceptional. We live in Uptown and Barter might become our most 'regular' place."

  • "The ambiance is amazing! The staff wonderful! The food is delicious! The ONLY negative is how small the portion sizes are. I had the cheeseburger and fries, but still left a little hungry."

  • "Just sit at the bar and watch the guys do their magic. I wouldn't bother eating there. Food was way too salty for my taste. Even with a reservation we waited 45 min. to be seated. Next time we'll just sit at the bar, and enjoy the drinks!"
    Dined on 1/18/2014
  • "3 full pages of cocktails & drinks and 1 poor page of food and none of it appetizing. While the cocktails seemed prominent, the tightly packed pages of drinks where overwhelming. What's the identity here? We wish we could have bartered for better food. It was bland, boring, heavy handed and not flavorful. The steak was mediocre and in this town, that is not a good sign. Nothing remotely memorable in a good way."

  • "My wife and I tried Barter for date night. New spot with a great chef. One of the innovative items on the menu was a plate of pickled everything. Pickled Celery? Wow. They even used my favorite whisky - George Dickel- to pickle things. I had a ribeye - buttery and cooked right. My wife had the quail and it was so plentiful I got some as well. We'll be back."

  • "Extremely limited menu. Little to nothing for non meat eaters, including vegetarian or fish dishes. Even the fish tacos came with pork on them. I had to give them to another guest at our table. Setting is great, what a waste!"

  • "Good: As expected with a Tim Love place, Food was great. Design was new. Great location. Bad: Showed up for a 8:45 reservation and we weren't set til 9:20. Told mutiple times, "5 more minutes". Hostess and manager both offered a free drink for the delay. Neither got them taken off the bar bill. After being set, waiter didnt show for 10 minutes and when he did, he flew by dropping of menus and moving on, or dropping of something else and moving, rarely asking if we needed something and it was too loud to yell at him to come back. Wine we order came with a waiter endorsement but was horrible, even after being decanted. Barter has quite a few kinks to work our at that price point before we will go back."

  • "I love Dallas restaurants, and am excited about all of the new restaurant openings -- except for this one. The service was poor. The waiter asks if we want bottled water or tap; I asked for sparkling, and we got tap. He never noticed. The table next to us had to ask three times for bread (and only asked because they saw that we got some). The bread wasn't good, so they weren't missing much. I ordered the wild board chop special on recommendation of the waiter. The chops were so tough that I could barely chew them. They were, however, better than my date's food. He got the burger, which was so salty that we decided the chef must have somehow spilled an entire container of salt into the meat. It was simply inedible."

  • "The setup is exactly the same as the former private social, but the vibe is much more southwestern (think Stampede 66 or lonesome dove except less formal). Wait staff in jeans and pearl snap shirts. The food was good, we are the buffalo wild boar ribs and the special sausage (which was camel and very good!). The dessert (we tried the bread pudding) was probably the worst we have ever had. The drinks however were awesome. I had the champagne cocktail with the wine floater and my husband did the bartenders choice. Overall a good restaurant, but definitely for a more casual occasion or for watching sports (there was a TV in the dining area...)"
