Diner Reviews
  • "My husband and I went to Barrio for dinner on a Friday evening at 5:30. We picked a few things from the happy hour menu and a couple small plates to share. Everything came out very quickly and was delicious. We ordered more than when could eat, but it all sounded so good, and we wanted to try a little of everything. Good prices, good food, good service, good atmosphere. I would recommend this restaurant, and we will go back again."

  • "The staff at Barrio was very supportive with my dietary needs..I have gluten and dairy allergies and our waiter was spot on making sure I did not have any thing that would make me ill."

  • "Food for the four of us came out at drastically different times. Chips and salsa after the tacos. I was done eating by the time two daily specials came out for my friends. Very frustrating."

  • "Poor service, OK food, nothing to write home about. I made the reservation for a group of 6, when we arrived no table was available, we sat at the bar for over 20 minutes waiting on our table, The hostess once again informed us that no table was yet available and offered us a cramped booth not suited for 6 people. We initially turned down the booth as unsuitable, I asked the hostess how much longer it would be before a suitable table would become available, she informed me it would be quite awhile, We then asked her, "you took the reservation correct?" she replied "technically yes" We should have taken the clue and left at that point! save yourself the time, there are plenty of other places nearby."

  • "If you are cool with sitting on your neighbor's lap and having to yell at your dining partner, then this is your place. This place is incredibly loud and crammed with no place to wait for a table. The service was strange...they want you in and out as fast as possible. They actually told the guests next to us that they had to leave because they had another reservation in that spot, they were just as shocked as I was! They had just finished their food and were finishing up their drinks. The food was just ok but the drinks were great. I won't be back, I would spend my money elsewhere where I get good service and great food."

  • "This is a great choice for anyone looking for a fun time out. The staff is excellent. Great understanding of the menu and extensive drink offerings."

  • "Service was great and the bar was packed. Guacamole and rest of the food was very good. Not huge portions, so you can try a few different things. Will be back!"

  • "We were staying at The Marquette in Minneapolis and were looking for a fun restaurant to go to while being downtown. We loved Barrio. The food was great, the service was good, and the atmosphere was fun! It is definitely worth checking out."

  • "I love the Barrio and find myself there for lunch, a lot! They have a fabulous lunch special that comes with chips and salsa, which is always a hit. Great drinks too!"

  • "Great place to get a bite before going to the Orchestra. Server was very helpful. Enjoyed the small plates. We were able to try different plates without being stuffed."

  • "guac was bland. other items also lacked any spice. coffee tasted like it had been on the burner for hours"

  • "Barrio has great, inexpensive South American food. The Nicollet Mall location is small and loud, but our group had a great time. They have a good happy hour menu. The wait staff explains the menu well and has excellent recommendations."

  • "It's a great spot that we frequent whenever we are in the area!"

  • "Barrio is the Best! Gourmet food at great prices. Selection and knowledge of Tequila is outstanding."

  • "The food was bland, but if you enjoy unique desserts come try theirs. If there weren't so many other places to eat around it, I would suggest it to a friend, but not given its location and price. I've tried the restaurant, but am not impressed enough to go back!"

  • "The food was fresh, flavorful, and great to share, creating a fun date-night dining experience. The tequila list was extensive and impressive. Waitstaff was friendly and knowledgeable."

  • "Fun spot to spend Valentine's Day. The service was great with good recommendations from the waiter. We were treated well and weren't rushed though the restaurant and bar were very busy."

  • "We have been to Barrio one other time and really like the food and ambiance. With few options available on Valentines Night at a decent time, my husband and I picked Barrio to spend a romantic dinner together. The service was great and the food was good too, while not the most formal dinner for Valentines, The biggest complaint was how packed in we all were and having a "romantic" dinner was not an option. I realize we were lucky to get a reservation and they accommodated as many guests as possible - so what were we to expect!? We'll go back - but not on Valentines Night!"

  • "southwestern-inpired, for sure. Crab empanadas, wonderful! They arrived piping hot in an interesting masa tortilla. We had a quiet time arriving mid-afternoon. Our server was nice but not too overly friendly. The cut up raw vegetables were julienned much earlier so when we got the dish, the jicama was getting slimy. Overall, not a bad place."

  • "The food was very good but our server made the night! What we ordered wasn't exactly what we thought it would be and he went above and beyond to make sure we were happy! It was a wonderful night out."

  • "Had a meeting during lunch and had a great experience. Easy to make reservations, great food that came quickly during the one lunch time."

  • "Went here to celebrate my husband's birthday and had a great time! Got the window seat so our entertainment was people watching on Nicollet Mall. The food was amazing and the server was very knowledgeable about tequilas and had great recommendations. The margaritas are also the best around. I've been here for lunch in the summer as well and you can't beat the $10 lunch on the patio!"
    Dined on 1/11/2014
  • "I asked for table for 6 by the window, based on another review I read. While they did honor the request, sort of, the table was right in front of the front door. Brrrr! Food was good, Shrimp skewers were the best. Of course the Margaritas are all really good. Fun for small groups, pretty noisy, but it was a Friday night."

  • "The atmosphere in this joint is pretty neat. I loved the candles and the cozy bar feel. I honestly didn't expect much in terms of food, but the food was top touch. I think this is a great casual restaurant with amazing food."

  • "The food at Barrio never disappoints. Everything I've had there has been delicious. On my last visit I brought my sister-in-law who is from Chile and she loved the food and said it was very authentic South American cuisine. Our waiter was very knowledgeable regarding the tequila and his enthusiasm convinced us to try a tequila flight...which was surprisingly very enjoyable (I'm not usually a big fan of drinking straight tequila.). The ambiance was very chic and warm, lots of candle light, original artwork, and red hues in the decor. Last but certainly not least, the margaritas are THE best in town. Can't wait to go back!"

  • "Love the Barrio. Prices keep out the coupon cutters, staff is professional and attentive. Lot if fun in the summertime."

  • "We had lunch during a weekday when it was pretty slow until about noon. At that time it seemed to start getting busier. The food was delicious and fresh."

  • "We were a bit disappointed at first because of the location of our table -- right next to the main entrance. We booked a reservation earlier. However, there was a holiday party upstairs, which caused the shortage of good table locations. That being said, the food and drinks did not disappoint our guest. As usual, the food and drinks were great! We love bringing visitors to your restaurant because of unique drinks and food. We will be back again."

  • "Our family went to Barrio before the Holidazzle parade on a Friday night. We requested a table near the windows so that we could see the parade. I was contacted by someone from Barrio a few days before my reservation to warn me that our view may be somewhat limited and we may not have the best view of the parade from our table. We decided to keep the reservation anyway, and were actually in a perfect spot to watch the parade from our table. Our server was exceptional. It was our first time at Barrio, so we told him to just bring us 4-5 dishes that he recommends. They were all fabulous. We had a great overall experience at barrio and I would suggest it to anyone!"

  • "Tasty but a little pricey. Loved the tenderloin and hearts of palm salad - wish this was main course sized. Very flavorful. Guac was very tiny portion, as were the super oily tortilla chips"

  • "We love the food and ambiance of this place. Always a great experience. The wall of tequilas is the best!"

  • "We were visiting from out of town and found this via Open Table. It had great reviews so we decided to try it. We were pleasantly surprised from the moment we walked in the door - great ambiance, outstanding service, delicious and inventive food, as well as an exciting cocktail menu! If I lived in Minneapolis I would go all the time, and I would absolutely recommend this place to a friend. Do not miss this restaurant (and don't miss the housemade guacamole)!"

  • "Try the margarita with the hot pepper in it, on the rocks as the server suggested--mmmmm! Also very, very good: skewered shrimp, guacamole and chips, and the beet/arugula salad."
    Dined on 11/22/2013
  • "My family and I chose Barrio's as it is close to the theatre district. I wouldn't necessarily go there for the food-it was good, but the tequila drinks were unique and flavorful! If we go again, I would choose to sit in the lower level as the upper level does not have the same ambiance."

  • "My new favorite downtown spot--can't believe I hadn't found this place sooner! I love the ala carte style of menu! Our waiter was very helpful in helping me make a choice of taco and tostado with just the right amount of "heat". The Mahi Mahi taco and Carnitas taco were fantastic, and their signature tortilla chips (laced with cumin) are incredible--a perfect match with their perfect homemade guacamole and smoky, but not too spicy salsa. The service was superb, and the prices were very reasonable..."

  • "This was my first time and I had really been wanting to go there. I arrived about 5 minutes early and was immediately seated. As I sat there and waited for my lunch companion I watched several of the wait staff, including what turned out to be my wait person, stand around talking to who I assume was the manager. This went on for a good 5+ minutes. The restaurant was not very busy so you would think that they would notice that someone was seated. I received water very quickly by a nice man who was not my wait person. Once my waitress finally came over she was OK. I was previously a waitress and a bartender so I know what it takes. Very disappointed as it did not seem that providing service was a priority by my waitress or the "manager"."

  • "Every time we are in Minneapolis we for sure make a stop here for guac and the specialty margaritas. The service is always friendly and prompt. The corn chowder is also outstanding. All the little details at barrio are always appreciated! Thank you!"
