Diner Reviews
  • "Barrio is a fun, casual bar serving tapas style plates in a vibrant area of downtown. The tacos were among the best I've had since moving north from Texas, and the margarita was spot on. Our waiter was aggressive in trying to get us to order almost everything on the menu. Aside from the service, the atmosphere and food were excellent."

  • "Enjoyed everything about this place with the exception of a bit noisier than we'd prefer. We started with Black Diamond margaritas which were very good. For our second round, my date selected the white sangria which she loved and I selected the Trinity margarita which was excellent! We started with the fresh made to order guacamole - accompanied by a terrific ancho salsa. We selected from the small plate and taco sections of the menu: Beef tenderloin antichuros (delicious), skirt steak taco (very good), wild mushroom enchilada (very nice meatless selection), and then heated it up with the pork belly taco and the spicy habanero chicken tamale (both delightful if you like heat). Excellent, attentive servers and staff!"

  • "We recently dined at Barrio, and thoroughly enjoyed the shrimp tacos. The chips and guac are our favorite, and are always fresh and flavorful. Our only disappointment is that the patio is first-come, first-served. We had hoped to reserve a seat there, but the reservations are only for interior dining which isn't as appealing on a sunny nice day."

  • "Sadly out waiter was rude to the point it made me uncomfortable. My family was afraid to ask him any questions or to tell him they brought the wrong food. We ate out delicious food in a hurry and left before we troubled him anymore."

  • "Offers indoor and outdoor dining with lots of people watching opportunities. Located in a busy "foodie" section of Nicolette Mall, it is a hot spot with excellent food. Italian with a twist and some innovative combinations. Attractive decorations make the dining room fun and vibrant."

  • "Reservations highly recommended during lunch rush. The place was packed!! The small portions were a treat too. The tacos were fabulous and the tostada was great as well."

  • "The food was good, and my group appreciated that there were small portion sizes at a lower price. However, our server seemed rude and not happy to be serving us."

  • "I must say this is a great summer lunch spot. Nothing beats sitting on the patio enjoying some great food. I said the food here is usually great but there must have been something in the air as at my last visit; the food was truly memorable!"

  • "We had an excellent experience at Barrio on a Saturday night. The service was great. Our waitress did an outstanding job. The food was delicious as usual. Our only complaint was our seat. There isn't really a good seat in the whole restaurant. Every table seems crammed in there. We were wedged between the stairs and the bar near the restrooms. People always rushing past the table. This however, is really the nature of the space there. Still a great birthday dinner. We'll be back."

  • "We stopped at Bario while visiting downtown and had a great array of dishes to share: the corn chowder was the best we have ever had. The heirloom tomato salad was very fresh and tasty, and the skewered tenderloin was tender and smoky. Hip crowd, attentive waiter, and great people watching for a Friday night."

  • "I think the #1 reason I come here is for the fabulous guacamole and chips. Unique mexican that isn't your standard tortilla/meat/cheese combos. There's a reasonable lunch special (tacos and guac for $9) and you can get in-and-out for lunch in just under an hour. Outdoor dining fills very fast."

  • "The food is always excellent! Service is usually fabulous! But, twice now the waitstaff has been less than stellar. I get that serving busy downtown crowds would get old, but this last visit our waitstaff was clearly not happy to be at work. Not just with our table, but those around us as well. She seemed irritated with her co-workers too. I go out of my way to be friendly and appreciative when I dine out - Ive waited tables so I know what its like. I will go back because I love the food, atmosphere, location. But I hope the service is improved."

  • "Not at all impressed - I've stopped for an occasional happy hour on the patio, but this was my first time eating there or sitting inside. Happy hour portions were small and not shareable. Even portions that said (2), came with all ingredients stacked on one tortilla. Sitting there, scraping 'half' the stuff off was messy and not fun. Left a lot of the sauce on one serving and nearly none on the other. Our server was aloof, flippant and impatient - probably won't be back, unless it's for a quick margarita."

  • "We tried Barrio for the first time, before we attended a concert at Orchestra Hall. We got there around 5 pm on a Saturday evening. The inside would not be our style restaurant - we're in our 60s - but the outdoor was fun and lively. Kareem was an outstanding waiter. We wanted to try tequila shots and he recommended a flight we enjoyed. He also recommended a specific margarita based on the kind we had liked other places. His recommendations were perfect. Joe, the manager, chatted with us a bit and was professional and friendly. The portions are small, so it was a perfect light supper for us before the concert. We particularly liked the homemade chips and guacamole and the tuna tacos."

  • "Had reservations for a wedding anniversary on a Friday night and were seated immediately. Barrio is a unique bar scene with notable and memorable offerings for foodies. Clear expertise with crafted cocktails and attentive staff. For $3 chips and salsa selection is an unbeatable deal prior to or after a night out in Minneapolis. Dessert was a last minute decision before we had to leave for a concert but definitely glad we stuck around for the flour-less chocolate torte with banana 3 ways and coffee!"

  • "Our first visit several years ago was not great -- the menu was limited for vegetarians and seemed more bar food than an actual dinner. Our second visit was vastly different. The menu has changed and the waiter offered other veggie options which the chef could create. The mushroom enchilada was excellent, the potato sope unusual. The lamb meatballs were huge, although a bit dry. Their outdoor patio is a great setting to watch the sun go down."

  • "It was a very busy lunch hour, so service was a bit slow. We both had the special, shrimp tacos. My guest mentioned that he's had better food at Bario in the past. This was my first time there for lunch, so I thought it was good, but not excellent. Guacamole excellent!!"

  • "Great food. Textures were good and sauces were very flavorful. Lunch special was very affordable. Outdoor dining was nice, but pretty small. However, Barrio worked well with the small outdoor area that do they have. If you are looking for some great Mexican food, Barrio is a nice choice. Would definitely dine there again. Happy hour and appetizers would work well there also due to the upbeat environment."

  • "Even though I work a block away, I never tire of it. The food is always fresh and the guac cannot be beat. Barrio is always a treat and the servers are attentive & friendly. Love it."

  • "On a sunny Friday, this place was packed inside and out. But the service was still great, and I love how they bring the food out when it's ready, in intervals. Makes sense when it's busy. "

  • "We had a group lunch for work with 6 people total. I made reservations the day before, with a note requesting an outdoor table. The hostess called to confirm my appt, and did mention reservations are for indoor dining only (FIFO for outdoor space). I told her that seemed odd, but fine - if we saw no open seats outside, we'd try the Local and NewsRoom prior to sitting inside Barrio. Well, apparently every Target employee dines out for lunch on Friday, with no open outside seating anywhere. We ended up eating inside, which was fine in the end - great food, great atmosphere. The only complaint was the service. I understand the lunch rush on a nice Friday afternoon can be overwhelming (I've been there before), but 20 min gaps? No bueno."

  • "I've always been a fan of Barrio, but what I love the most about them is the first impression they give you when you order chips and salsa by bringing you three different options of salsa. It's the little things that count and they nail the little things. "

  • "My wife and I went here and loved it. The food is real Latin street food, verified by my wife (a foodie) who lived in Mexico for a year. She said her meal was authentic and outstanding. I had the Cuban sandwich which was excellent!!"

  • "I went to barrio for lunch and had a reservation. I made the reservation for 4 people and two of the group could not make it. When we checked in and told the hostess we only had 2 people, she was incredibly rude to us and made us wait until a 2 top opened up. The point of a reservation over lunch during the work week is that I don't have extra time to wait!! Nothing opened up and we ended sitting at the bar, which would have been fine if the barman was friendly and welcoming. But yet again, we were treated as an inconvenience and he barely spoke to us as he slapped two waters and menus down. The food was ok, but definitely not good enough to make up for the rude service. The staff at barrio need to learn customer service. "

  • "Serving time was efficient and food was tasty. Portions and pricing are a little odd... the soup was a good sized bowl but the lunch salad was tiny. Both were priced about the same."

  • "My husband and I went to Barrio for dinner on a Friday evening at 5:30. We picked a few things from the happy hour menu and a couple small plates to share. Everything came out very quickly and was delicious. We ordered more than when could eat, but it all sounded so good, and we wanted to try a little of everything. Good prices, good food, good service, good atmosphere. I would recommend this restaurant, and we will go back again."

  • "Food for the four of us came out at drastically different times. Chips and salsa after the tacos. I was done eating by the time two daily specials came out for my friends. Very frustrating."

  • "Poor service, OK food, nothing to write home about. I made the reservation for a group of 6, when we arrived no table was available, we sat at the bar for over 20 minutes waiting on our table, The hostess once again informed us that no table was yet available and offered us a cramped booth not suited for 6 people. We initially turned down the booth as unsuitable, I asked the hostess how much longer it would be before a suitable table would become available, she informed me it would be quite awhile, We then asked her, "you took the reservation correct?" she replied "technically yes" We should have taken the clue and left at that point! save yourself the time, there are plenty of other places nearby."

  • "If you are cool with sitting on your neighbor's lap and having to yell at your dining partner, then this is your place. This place is incredibly loud and crammed with no place to wait for a table. The service was strange...they want you in and out as fast as possible. They actually told the guests next to us that they had to leave because they had another reservation in that spot, they were just as shocked as I was! They had just finished their food and were finishing up their drinks. The food was just ok but the drinks were great. I won't be back, I would spend my money elsewhere where I get good service and great food."
