This past Sunday evening was my first time visiting, and I was not disappointed. Their beer list is extensive and the few I tried were great. The food was REALLY good. We started with the short rib quesadillas, which were amazing. Then we each got burgers, which were also delicious. The different types of mayo they make are particularly awesome...that bacon mayo...omg. Even the french fries were great. Oh, and thanks to the bartender for recommending the cappuccino cheesecake! SO GOOD! I will definitely be going back soon. The brunch menu looked awesome, so that's probably going to be my next trip to Barren Hill.

Excellent brunch. The Bloody Marys are great, with lots of horseradish. Eggs Benedict with salmon was out of this world delicious. All items are reasonably priced. Good spot if you have a group brunch. I highly recommend.

What a pleasant surprise. Barren Hill is an exceptional upgrade from the old General Lafayette Inn. Because we were there early, the restaurant was not very crowded. More people came as the evening went on. But the good news was that "Happy Hour" included the restaurant not just the bar. There was an extensive beer menu with most glasses costing $1.50. We had hummus for an appetizer, Thai curry mussels and risotto with vegetables for entrees and cheesecake for dessert. What a delicious meal at a very reasonable price. Plan to go again - often.

I've been here twice for brunch now and both times were outstanding. The food is well thought out, rich, and tasty. Their beer selection is also top notch. I've only gone afternoons, but it hasn't been crowded when I've been there - not empty but not overflowing. It makes for a great relaxing afternoon.

This was our first time. We saw a lot of food on the menu that we wanted to try. The macaroni and cheese was very good. I ordered the wings. I enjoyed the sauce but they serve the wings whole. I don't really like them whole. The fish and chips was very good. My wife had their grilled cheese special and it was awesome. The food there is simple but full of flavor. As the place filled up the noise level got louder but we were still able to hold a conversation.

We sat for several minutes before we even had anyone come to our table. My husband ordered steak. What came was a steak with French fries covering the steak. Presentation was sloppy. Too expensive for what we got. The beer was not good. Tried some did not like it. Got charged for it anyway when I tried to send it back. Nothing came with our expensive meal. No rolls or bread, no salad.

We really enjoyed our meals at the BHT. One suggestion - I had the quesadillas which were great, but came with only two "sauces" which were both heavy (I think sour cream and an aioli). It needed a third option, something very light to balance the heaviness of the other two. A really good fresh salsa would have been fine. Nothing fancy - just to lighten up the palette. Otherwise great food and atmosphere. This is a nice local go-to place for us: Good food with fast and friendly service.

6 of us went for a girls' night out. Not looking for a big party scene, just decent food and drink at a nice pub. My beer which was one of their own was warm, the burgers were average at best with 3 of the 4 having the order wrong, and the service was slow. The feeling in the place was one of isolation and almost creepiness. We will not go back.

Gave it a mixed review a while back for good beer, very poor vegetarian options. We gave it another try last night and I was really pleased with all of the veggie options. I had corn empanadas and a watermelon salad, but also thought about felafel, a highly praised grilled cheese, some salads, and more. I lost my husband in a vat of duck fries which he thoroughly enjoyed. We sat in the bar area and enjoyed really attentive service. I like the spiffier spot next door too, but there is something really nice about the old, familiar, cozy ambiance here. Liked the beer less (not a fan of Belgian style beers which feature heavily on the menu), but the food and overall experience will draw us back again.

The title says it all. Open Table wouldn't allow us to reserve Barren Hill for more than eight, but the hostess (Kelci) arranged it so we could accommodate two latecomers. Kelsi also ensuted that we were accommodated with a birthday cake for two of our party. We were going to bring our own, but they charge a re-plating fee (small negative, but understandable since they have a pastry chef), so we went with their plain sheet cake - which was a wise choice indeed and a topper to a wonderful meal. As for the food - in one word, WOW. I don't have enough characters left to describe how wonderful it was, but I'll say this: if you're eating in the Barren Hill neighborhood, choose the Barren Hill Tavern before sny other restaurant.

We enjoyed our meal, but were glad we had made a reservation as the place quickly filled up by 7pm (this was a Friday night). The kitchen service was a bit slow, but the staff (and especially our server Rose!) was as attentive as they could be with a full house of patrons. Would (and will) definitely dine here again. Great food, and an amazing selection of beer on tap to choose from!

The Barren Hill Tavern and Brewery was formerly the General Lafayette Inn. We were happy when they re-opened under the new name and continued the tradition of brewing their own beer. In addition to their own brews, they have an extensive beer list, on tap and in bottles. This seems to be a larger offering than the two other beer serving restaurants on G-Town Pike. We like the old historic architecture, the quieter scene and incredibly friendly service. The menu is gastro pub and changes occasionally to offer seasonal dishes.

If you're a beer geek, this place is a must-try. They've got a full tap of their own brews--go for a sampler!--and some very strong guest taps and bottles. The food was very good, and our server was friendly and knowledgeable. The decor feels unfinished, insofar as there's absolutely nothing on the walls. And it would be great if they'd designate a handicapped parking spot or two and put a ramp that would allow someone in a wheelchair to easily get from the main entrance to the main dining area. As it is, customers in wheelchairs have to go around the side of the building to be let in.

For the money, the food was okay. I had the Pork Saltimbocca. The pork was cooked well but was under seasoned and the Prosciutto had casing that had not been removed. Our server was very good but the starkness of the walls with no artwork whatsoever made the ambience uncomfortable at best. Although there was nothing horrible, there was also nothing to make go back.

My wife was a little skeptical when I told her we were having brunch at a brew pub. She was game, though, and we met our two daughters and our son-in-law at 11. There were two orders of the Brioche french toast, one pulled pork, one breakfast quesadilla, and I had the salmon BLT. The food was served promptly and the presentation was understated but nice. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meals. I also enjoyed BBQ Bloody Mary, consisting of tequila, stout, and mary mix with a bacon garnish - everything's better with bacon! As we left, everyone raved about the food. Another successful Mother's Day brunch!

We've never been disappointed by our dining experiences at Barren Hill. Food is always spot on. The beer is, of course, fresh and tasty as any other Philly area brew pub. What stands out the most to us, is the service. We've had Michaela as our server several times and she never disappoints. She was able to handle our table of 10 with no problems at all.

The food was good enough to warrant a return visit, but the menu was extremely limited for such a large restaurant. I'm afraid this restaurant, once a neighborhood gem, is not going to make it under its new ownership. The night we ate there the dining areas were virtually empty with just a few patrons at the bar, but only a couple of tables in use. An expanded menu might help, but that may be hard to rationalize with so few diners. A chicken and egg problem?

Service was so not good. Food was pretty much tasteless. 8 people in our party, only decent choice was the Wagyu burger had by 2, and the hummus plate. Manager should not be waiting tables - hire experienced wait staff and manage. Ketchup, S&P should be on the table so that we didn't have to ask for 3+ times. Spicy ketchup should be a choice not a given. HOPE this sinking ship can be fixed! In house beer and guest offerings were great! Hostesses were very nice. *Might* return for a beer at the bar...*sigh*.

A small group of us went to Barren Hill Tavern for brunch not long ago. The restaurant looks great, though the old building provides some challenges. Because of the recent snow, there was a leak in the ceiling right next to our table (as in, if we moved two inches over, it would be dripping right on us). We told the waiter, who completely shrugged it off - it would have been nice if he'd offered to move us (the restaurant wasn't very busy and there were several open tables). Speaking of our waiter, he was a bit aloof - we had to ask several times for salt & pepper and when he brought coffee at the end of the meal, he didn't bring a spoon or creamer. The food was good, if not great, but I would go back.

Ate here for the third time in three weeks. Outstanding, plentiful array of on-premises and guest draft beers and ales that changes regularly. Creative but non-fussy menu. We'd like to try everything on the menu but what we've chosen has been so fabulous we have done some repeats. Highest marks for excellent treatment of salads and seafood, especially shellfish. Prices that are right on the money for quality and value. It is a tavern, so there is music and sports on TV, but staff will happily accommodate those who desire more quiet in the dining room. This is fast becoming our "go-to" place when we are too busy or tired to cook.

Visited with six others as part of a monthly beer club outing. The beer, brewed on site was good. I had several of the IPAs and was impressed. Along with their own beers, they have a nice selection of guest beers. The food was good and some interesting unique twists. With the fairly tun of the mill fish and chips, they served a fried kale. They also offered a pork belly Reuben. We would recommend and will return.
