Diner Reviews
  • "For the money, the food was okay. I had the Pork Saltimbocca. The pork was cooked well but was under seasoned and the Prosciutto had casing that had not been removed. Our server was very good but the starkness of the walls with no artwork whatsoever made the ambience uncomfortable at best. Although there was nothing horrible, there was also nothing to make go back."

  • "If you're a beer geek, this place is a must-try. They've got a full tap of their own brews--go for a sampler!--and some very strong guest taps and bottles. The food was very good, and our server was friendly and knowledgeable. The decor feels unfinished, insofar as there's absolutely nothing on the walls. And it would be great if they'd designate a handicapped parking spot or two and put a ramp that would allow someone in a wheelchair to easily get from the main entrance to the main dining area. As it is, customers in wheelchairs have to go around the side of the building to be let in."

  • "My father and I ate brunch at this restaurant for our first time. My dad ordered the Danish Apple Pancake and I ordered the mushroom feta omelet. Both dishes were delicious and the portions were large enough to have another meal."

  • "First visit, met a group of friends and it was awesome. Beer selection outstanding. Staff friendly. Atmosphere relaxed. Great spot."

  • "The menu needs a more coherent theme, but is always delicious. Most importantly, the beer is fantastic, creative and the list is constantly changing with guest taps from great brewers. "

  • "We stumbled upon Barrent Hill and were so happy with what we found. The food was fun, interesting and delicious. The beer menu was varied, but not overwhelming, and the ambience of the restaurant was cozy and inviting. Our server was patient and attentive. And the owner or manager was clearly present and engaged with the customers about the brewery and the experience. We will definitely go back!"

  • "My wife was a little skeptical when I told her we were having brunch at a brew pub. She was game, though, and we met our two daughters and our son-in-law at 11. There were two orders of the Brioche french toast, one pulled pork, one breakfast quesadilla, and I had the salmon BLT. The food was served promptly and the presentation was understated but nice. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meals. I also enjoyed BBQ Bloody Mary, consisting of tequila, stout, and mary mix with a bacon garnish - everything's better with bacon! As we left, everyone raved about the food. Another successful Mother's Day brunch!"

  • "1 of our group is vegetarian, several are really into good beers.Everyone was pleased. The soup special of shrimp bisque was delicious, although 1 diner wished for more shrimp. The falafel was perfectly cooked and had great flavor-they served it open face for 1 diner.Hummus was good but could probably use a little less spice.Braised short ribs were tender and flavorfulSeveral diners had Wagyu or Angus burgers and though they were great. I think we will be back soon."

  • "We've never been disappointed by our dining experiences at Barren Hill. Food is always spot on. The beer is, of course, fresh and tasty as any other Philly area brew pub. What stands out the most to us, is the service. We've had Michaela as our server several times and she never disappoints. She was able to handle our table of 10 with no problems at all."

  • "My husband and I enjoyed ourselves for dinner past Saturday night. The food was great and I am so grateful for the vegetarian options. Our server was knowledgable and super friendly. Lots of fantastic beer selection too!"

  • "The food was good enough to warrant a return visit, but the menu was extremely limited for such a large restaurant. I'm afraid this restaurant, once a neighborhood gem, is not going to make it under its new ownership. The night we ate there the dining areas were virtually empty with just a few patrons at the bar, but only a couple of tables in use. An expanded menu might help, but that may be hard to rationalize with so few diners. A chicken and egg problem?"

  • "Service was so not good. Food was pretty much tasteless. 8 people in our party, only decent choice was the Wagyu burger had by 2, and the hummus plate. Manager should not be waiting tables - hire experienced wait staff and manage. Ketchup, S&P should be on the table so that we didn't have to ask for 3+ times. Spicy ketchup should be a choice not a given. HOPE this sinking ship can be fixed! In house beer and guest offerings were great! Hostesses were very nice. *Might* return for a beer at the bar...*sigh*."

  • "A small group of us went to Barren Hill Tavern for brunch not long ago. The restaurant looks great, though the old building provides some challenges. Because of the recent snow, there was a leak in the ceiling right next to our table (as in, if we moved two inches over, it would be dripping right on us). We told the waiter, who completely shrugged it off - it would have been nice if he'd offered to move us (the restaurant wasn't very busy and there were several open tables). Speaking of our waiter, he was a bit aloof - we had to ask several times for salt & pepper and when he brought coffee at the end of the meal, he didn't bring a spoon or creamer. The food was good, if not great, but I would go back."

  • "The beers were fantastic but the food was really lacking. We ordered a bunch of appetizers. The mac and cheese was good but nothing to write home about, the large "pig in a blanket" was tasty but almost tasted like you bought it frozen and not fresh. The entree's were bland (fish and ships) and this was after we ordered two other items that they ran out of for the night. Lastly the light over head kept flickering above us which was quite annoying. The beer made the trip worth it and I am chalking it up to just a bad experience because I want this place to be good and it was fairly crowded."

  • "Ate here for the third time in three weeks. Outstanding, plentiful array of on-premises and guest draft beers and ales that changes regularly. Creative but non-fussy menu. We'd like to try everything on the menu but what we've chosen has been so fabulous we have done some repeats. Highest marks for excellent treatment of salads and seafood, especially shellfish. Prices that are right on the money for quality and value. It is a tavern, so there is music and sports on TV, but staff will happily accommodate those who desire more quiet in the dining room. This is fast becoming our "go-to" place when we are too busy or tired to cook."

  • "Visited with six others as part of a monthly beer club outing. The beer, brewed on site was good. I had several of the IPAs and was impressed. Along with their own beers, they have a nice selection of guest beers. The food was good and some interesting unique twists. With the fairly tun of the mill fish and chips, they served a fried kale. They also offered a pork belly Reuben. We would recommend and will return."

  • "The food is good, but the Craft Beer choice are amongst the top in the Montco area. I would like to state that I wish that the menu was more electic with more choices, but the beer really makes it a fabulous place. Set in a very old historic building, the ambience and the history of the building is absolutely fabulous. The beer is great!! Seriously great! The menu is somewhat limited and I would hope that they would expand their selections as they grow."

  • "Went for a late lunch.6 dined;1 vegetarian;1 toddler.Very nice wine- by- the- glass list. Those who tried the beers really liked them.A special black bean soup was wonderfully spicy-one of the best I have had. Fries were crunchy and tasty. Porchetta sandwich had very tender pork and a great garlic sauce. 2 had the roast turkey sandwich and found it delicious. The chicken sandwich wsa also delicious. We will be back very soon for dinner. Try this place!"

  • "Second time visiting Barren Hill and consistency was evident. Their beer selection is very solid and their appetizers were very tasty. Their Hummus platter was great and my guest liked their meals as well. Very busy for a Saturday night, but the noise was not an issue for our table. Visit the bar and have the tenders recommend some selections. They have not steered me wrong."

  • "The menu is different from the Gen. Lafayette, but the atmosphere is the same, maybe better. Staff were friendly and efficient. Drink choices were great, especially beers. Back to the menu: There was plenty of variety and all four of us enjoyed our choices. All of our picks were prepared and presented well, except for the crab cake. It was lonely on the plate and should have had some lettuce or coleslaw or something with it. We will surely return."

  • "The beer selection is amazing (my husband said so), even though I don't drink beer. The food was very good. Comfort foods, and very different menu than the typical pub fare. The mushroom gratin was awesome, with lots of fresh mushrooms, diced vegetables in a savory sauce and topped with cheese. I do wish the menu had descriptions of the food instead of just ingredient lists. I had to ask Dominique our server about 6 questions to determine what I wanted to order. She was patient and kind, and just attentive enough. One food server handed me my plates over the table instead of walking around to serve me, which I did not appreciate especially because I have a bad wrist. All our meals were very good, except the pecan choc pie, too hard!"

  • "Our party of 10 came recently on a Sunday to celebrate our mother's birthday. Although our reservation was at 3:00pm we were only issued a "brunch" menu. According to their Sunday regulations you may only order from a brunch menu or wait until 5 to order from the dinner menu. Even though our server tried twice to persuade the chef to let us order from the dinner menu we were denied. The brunch menu was very disappointing, consisting mostly of breakfast dishes. Choices of lunch items such as sandwiches were minimal, and no salad or soup entrees were offered."

  • "My husband and I dined at the Barren Hill over the weekend after recently learning that it reopened. Overall, we had a very good experience. The food and service were both great, as was the beer selection. We are looking forward to returning."

  • "Made reservations for 6pm on a Thursday night. When we arrived, only 2 other tables in the dining area were in use, but plenty of people were enjoying the bar area. We were promptly seated and advised on the available drinks. They had a great beer selection with a dozen or so brewed in-house as well as many "guest taps". Our waiter was very friendly and helpful in explaining the specials and answering our other menu questions. The chicken wings were fantastic. A miscommunication about the special running out caused a delay in our food, but it was more than made up for by an out-of-this world prime rib and complimentary house chips. All in all, a great place in a charming old house."

  • "This was our first visit. The food was good, generous portions and very tasty. As other reviewers report, the homemade fries are great. There are televisions and music in the bar areas but they are not overpowering and I was able to enjoy conversation over dinner with my date. There is still no exterior sign or decoration in the interior, but I believe this will soon be rectified. We enjoyed our meal and will be back again."

  • "We're glad we found you for the perfect casual dinner on New Year's Eve. The food was good and our server and other people working at the restaurant were outstanding. We'll come back again just for the warm welcome they gave us."

  • "Been here twice now and sat in bar area each time for a more casual experience. Extensive beer list, great service and wonderful food. Ate here on New Year's Eve and had two amazing seafood specials- sushi grade seared tuna and a delicious lobster dish. Will definitely be back again. Also met the owner who was really nice!"

  • "We had a nice meal with great service. I probably won't return unless they add some healthier selections. Large size salads with grilled veggies or grilled salmon would be a great addition to menu."

  • "I loved this place when it was General and continue to love it today as Barren Hill. I'm working my way through the new menu and have enjoyed everything so far. However, the stand out continues to beer the beer, particularly what they brew themselves. But I really like how they've added a guest tap list of amazing microbrews from across the nation. I highly reccomend this place to grab beer with friends."

  • "The beer was fantastic, I will come back to try some more of their great varieties. The place looks bare, no pictures, looks like maybe they painted it since they moved in, no lights in the parking lot or sign. They have an opportunity for something great, but it looks like they haven't put much thought into the look of the room and theme of the food. An ecclectic menu, sandwiches mixed with larger entrees, a bit scattered. Shrimp came with legs and all, but my wife would have liked a description from the server, she may have ordered something else. I liked the mussels Aventino very good dippable sauce. The porketta sandwich was good, a little dry, definitely spicy, which I like, but this could be too hot for those who dont like hot food."

  • "My husband and I had different burgers and were both really pleased with them. The beer menu was extensive, and our server was attentive. The restaurant's decor was a little spartan, but that didn't detract from our satisfaction."

  • "I had a delicious rabbit "stew" - rabbit over rice with a thick, stew-like gravy. A bargain at $15. My wife had the hanger steak and it was delicious. For beer, I loved the saison. The porter was rich and tasty. My wife had vodka and tonic and according to the bill, it was Absolut. Her drinks were $6 a piece, a little pricy for our wallet. Maybe that's their bar vodka. My wife is content with house vodka. Next time we'll ask ahead of time. We were originally seated in a near empty dining room and asked to move to the bar area and they accommodated us gracefully."
