A word from Barrel 44 - Bexley
Barrel 44 Whiskey Bar was born of our love of fine foods and whiskey and the desire make them accessible to everyone. We enjoy dispelling the myth that fine foods have to be enjoyed exclusively in a fancy pants environment or that whiskey is hard to drink or can only be enjoyed by scotch snobs with a discerning palate.

We bring to the table a menu that is rich, noble and diverse and pair it with a selection of over 200 hand crafted, carefully aged whiskey.

We are a neighborhood joint and welcome everyone, from locals to out-of- towners and strive to make you feel at home in our home.

Slainte, Cheers, Salut...

First they did not have a very upscale selection of whiskey. It is a whiskey bar for heavens sake! The restaurant was empty on a Saturday night. We ordered two entrees and asked if the both could be split in the kitchen so we could each have half. There is a charge for that. It's not as if we were splitting one entree, we ordered two full entrees. The mushroom flat-bread was tasteless and had a powdery consistency. All in all, I would not go back to this restaurant nor would I recommend it to anyone.

This restaurant, in a great location on the edge of Bexley, and near two campuses, has gone through at least three owners in the last fifteen years. The current owner is the best. The menu changed to include some truly unique items, but it retained the classy atmosphere it had 15 years ago. The flatbreads are wonderful and there is a significant choice of them. There are a wide variety of starters and salads, and the main offerings are diverse and well prepared. The service is friendly and knowledgeable, but not intrusive. Unlike some restaurants, where there are a couple menu items that bring you back, this one has a majority of items that anyone would like. You can come back assured of the same service and quality menu each time.

  • The food, service and ambience

The food, service and ambience were all excellent. The only fault I have with Barrell 44 is their lack on nutritional information for their food, either on their website or at the restaurant. If you are on any kind of restricted diet this makes it very difficult to stay on task. It appears that they do offer healthy choices, but without the numbers you cannot be sure. It remains one of my favorite spots, but I would feel more confident of my choices and would go there more often if I had access to the necessary information. Most restaurants make this information available, at least on-line, so I think they are falling behind the health trend in this area.

I met a friend for dinner at Barrel 44 last Friday night. We had a great time, the food was delicious and the service was good. No surprises there because I have always enjoyed this restaurant. My friend paid cash for her bill and I placed mine on a credit card. The next morning, I went online to do some banking and saw that my friend's bill had been applied to my credit card. So the waitress accepted cash for that bill and also charged it to my account. Surely, that was a simple mistake/oversight/accident. I will contact the restaurant to get it straightened out. I am hoping there will be not problems with getting my account reimbursed.

As we first went in, the hostesses did not give a professional impression, but the server's service once we got to the table was fine. We are not big on whiskeys, so we had wine but their wine selection was very limited. Both the salmon entree and chocolate cake dessert were fine, but nothing noteworthy.

First time in Columbus and we were looking for something close to where we were staying for the night that would be fun and have a good meal and boy did we find it! Excellent steaks!! Oysters were tasty as well. The liquor and beer list is really spectacular, especially if you like whisky and bourbon. Our meal was so good when we were done we went to the bar and sampled a few different whiskeys in different flights and they were all really great. If you are in Columbus, I highly recommend it!!! Easy to get to from the airport hotels.

Our experience was excellent. The food was superb and everyone was pleased with their choices. The portions seemed to be smaller than before but that's not bad since I dislike restaurants that attempt to feed you like you're four people in one. All in all, Barrel 44 is a consistent winner for us.

We found this restaurant through Open Table. We enjoyed the most wonderful Mother's Day brunch! I really could not have asked for more- the menu was just unique enough to make it feel like a special occasion, and when the food arrived we were delighted! Everything was made perfectly and was so delicious. The ambience was perfect- warm and inviting with lovely colors and rich wood booths. Our service was well-timed and gracious. We are already making plans to go back for dinner!!

I have yet to have a bad or even "so-so" meal at Barrel 44. The menu is extensive and the food is well prepared and delicious. My favorites so far are the Trip Roast Stack sandwich, the Whiskey Penne Pasta and the blackened catfish. Service is excellent with a young, but surprisingly courteous and efficient wait staff. It's so good that I was there with friends for dinner Friday night and when an old friend called on Saturday, I suggested dinner there again!

I took my parents here for dinner. Our Appetizer was really good however all out meal were not. They no longer carried the sandwich that my dad and I wanted. Sandwiches came out cold and bland. Mothers pasta was over cooked and bland. And my girlfriend could eat nothing on the menu being a vegan. Service was also very slow and the restaurant was empty.Overall would go back for drinks and maybe an appetizer, but definetly not for dinner. In a vegan friendly city like Columbus, I would encourage them to update their menu to accommodate dinners of all kinds.

I hadn't been to this restaurant since it was the Bexley Monk. I was looking forward to lunch there with a friend. We were very much disappointed. My friend ordered salmon on her salad and got shrimp. I asked for ranch dressing on my salad and received bourbon vinegarette. My friend wanted a piece of bread or crackers to go with her large salad. The loaf of bread that was delivered to the table was hard as brick throughout. The center crunched when we bit into it. My grilled chicken filet was like rubber and was so hard around the edges that it was difficult to even cut it with a knife. Lastly, the carpet was so filthy that it was almost revolting. All in all, this was a very bad experience.

The food was, as usual, superb and we were happy to introduce a friend couple to the restaurant, which is a local favorite. The service, however, left much to be desired--drinks came after appetizers, main courses were brought before appetizers were finished, my husband said no chicken in his pasta but was charged for chicken. We were also crammed into a small booth that was hard to get in and out of. Hope this is not a trend at this restaurant we love!

We were a party of 4. The food was great. The flights of scotch/bourbon interesting. The wait person was rude. His name is Rob. I would start to ask a menu question, he would cut me off with "I'll be back" an was gone before I could get anything else out. At first I thought he was just busy. But the others at the table took notice after the 3rd time. When our dinners arrived via expeditors we still had the remains of 3 sets of flights, and 3 apps on the table. They stood there looking at us as though it was our error that the table had no space. We stacked the dishes and they were removed in a huff. We were NEVER asked how our food was or if we liked the flights/drinks. Too bad for him, I left 20%, I usually tip up to 75% for real service.

Had a group of 12, and Barrel 44 provided us a wonderful seating arrangement where all could easily talk and discuss. The food was delicious, and the service was prompt. I had the flank steak with mashed potatoes, and it was prepared well for a flank steak - juicy and excellent flavor. Two of our group ordered the whiskey flights and enjoyed them. The prices are not cheap, but you definitely get what you pay for. I highly recommend this place - it is a definite step up from any chain restaurant, but not so posh or elegant as to be reserved for special nights only. Great place.
