Diner Reviews
  • "The burgers are wrapped in a thin coat of pizza dough and baked in the pizza oven. Delicious & worth going for! Salads were also fresh and good."

  • "Super nice place to eat in with the lovely environment and tasty food with super nice service and romantic restaurant"

  • "My Husband and I decided to try Barra and take advantage of the 1000 points reservation. The food was good but not great. The service AWFUL. It took over 20 minutes to receive our drinks. We received one entrée BEFORE the appetizer and salad. The second entrée arrive 30 minutes or so after. We were not offered refills, a second cocktail, bread, or even told about the specials. The tables to our right and left received better and more attentive service. I am not sure what is going on there but we will not return."

  • "Me and my girlfriend made reservations at this place, and were disappointed. The food was mediocre and overpriced. My raviolis looked like they had been sitting out for a while. Also, the fact that there was a large bachelorette party, and spill over from people wandering in from erin express bar crawl made our night less than enjoyable."

  • "I made reservations on a Sunday at 1:15 for a friends 30th birthday three days in advance and we were totally ignored! We all (6people) ordered entrees directly from the menu with no add ons or changes. 45 minutes later still no food! When we asked about the wait we were told everything was on its way. 10 minutes later the server brought out 2 of the 6 entrees with cold hard food. We asked to speak to the manager and he was unapologetic . As the rest of the food was slowly brought out we all questioned the incomplete presentation i.e.: eggs with no hash browns, veggie benedict with no veggies etc. Finally we just decided to leave without touching the food. Very disappointing considering how much I love the sister restaurant BIRRA!"

  • "staff was extremely friendly. However, as the restaurant became more crowded the skill of the staff became very obvious. For example, she brought a cup of hot water with the tea bag already emersed and no saucer in which to put the spent tea bag. When asked for more hot water since the tea was stronger than I like, she brought a little demi-tasse cup of hot water. She walked back and forth twice past our table without being able to drop off the dessert. We had allowed 1 1/2 hours for dinner, and we ended up running off to get to the theater in time. Although we had announced our theater discount, 15%, it was not taken from the bill. The food was very tastety and ample and i would most likely return to this restaurant."

  • "I came here as a late minute reservation on Valentines Day; being there were still reservations available I was skeptical...but the place smelled amazing...the service was prompt and the service was excellent...wasn't noisy at all...and the Chicken Toscano was pretty good...and do try the Blood Orange Margarita if that's your thing...."

  • "My wife got the baked Penne, which were really heavy and very fat. Furthermore, the texture was very dry which made us think that it might have been frozen food at some point. I got the Penne with shrimp and Vodka sauce. I could have done better with fresh pasta and sauce from the Italian market. Good if nothing else is open or if you come as a group with low expectations. Service was nice though."

  • "They have brunch on Sundays, but don't make a reservation and expect to get points. Anything on the separate brunch menu won't count as an entree. Very disappointing and makes no sense as the items are comparably priced."

  • "Went to this restaurant per a groupon. Food was decent. Wine list not too extensive. Had the salami cheese tray as an app. Was nothing to brag about based on price. Cheese not too great on its own. We actually took some of them and crumpled over salad. Meats were okay. I had the filet which was cooked spot on. My boyfriend had the penne and meatballs which he said was average. Best part of dinner was the homemade tiramisu."

  • "This place strives to do everything right but doesn't quite hit the mark. The ambiance is casually hip and the menu has a good mix of food, from pizza to traditional Italian dishes to a few aspirational items. They make a good meatball and the short rib ravioli was a change of pace, but unfortunately both felt as if they were sitting around the kitchen waiting to be heated up. The tiramisu was extremly disappointing, tasting as if it was a defrosted frozen dessert. Mind you, I'll take the occasional slice of Sara Lee, but don't charge me $8 for it. The service was friendly and they let us linger without complaint. You can't beat the location close to Penn's Landing, but maybe it is best to try the pizza."

  • "The food was fair, the pizza was good but everything else was mediocre. Went last week and the pasta was bland, went this week and the chicken parm was over cooked."

  • "I had the meatballs for an app and they were good, the sauce has a little kick to it. They were not that hot though. The caesar salad was a little heavy on cheese and light on dressing but wasn't bad. Also, I got the filet. It was a good cut of meat. I ordered medium and was a little more medium well but close enough, was not worth having an issue with. I noticed they split the filet in half from the side, I guess to check the center, but have never seen that done before. They did not give me a steak knife and I was using the regular knife. The cut was tender enough it wasn't an issue. My friend's salmon was a bit over cooked & described as chewy. We were among only 2 tables in the place so you would expect a little better."

  • "wow... the lasagna had the flavor of a ready made lasagna you buy in the frozen section to warm at home. it wasn't bad, i like this flavor but this is not what i expect when i go to a restaurant and pay good money for my food. also, the bread was dry and stale. really not good food. the restaurant was empty (for a reason) and it felt gloomy there. they own the hookah bar next door so the smell of the hookah came to our dining area (as there's an open door connecting them) and it didn't smell nice. the server was good though and very friendly and service was fast and efficient. but food and ambiance... wow, not good at all."

  • "I'd never heard of this place before I made the reservation. I was going to a movie with my mom at the Ritz Five and we wanted somewhere nearby for dinner. The food was excellent, and so was the service. I'll definitely go back next time I'm in Old City."

  • "Service was bad and all food ordered was served room temp. My coffee was even cold. Not a fan, won't be back."

  • "The kitchen took 30 minutes to cook eggs and pancakes for 4-we were the only ones in the restaurant. The omelets were dry and bland-the pancakes oozed raw batter when I cut into them. We will never go back- shame-it is a pretty place"

  • "My boyfriend and I had a nice time at Barra. It was the last game of the Eagles' playoff attempt so maybe that's why we were the only table that night. The appetizer was good but the pizzas were much, much better and our server was very nice, attentive and accommodating. While the one half of the restaurant seems like it's always a night club/ hookah lounge (a hookah lounge in an Italian restaurant with Frank Sinatra blaring...?) the part we were in converts from a restaurant into an extension of the club next door. Overall, the staff is great, the food is good, but I'd leave the ambiance behind."

  • "We went to Barra for an early dinner on New Year's Eve; even though the restaurant was not crowded my family of 4 was placed alone in the back room near an exit door. We were quite cold and when I asked if we could sit in the front room (which was nicely decorated and seemed more desirable) we were not accommodated. A few minutes later some others came in and we were all squeezed in to that one part of that back room (they were setting up for a New Year Eve party). The food was very good, service good. Not eager to go back."

  • "I took my family here after the theater for lunch. It was very quiet and the place was warm and cozy. The server came right away but she often disappeared for long intervals at a time and we had to ask the other server several times to find her. The pizzas were excellent! I would not recommend the goat cheese salad as I saw very little goat cheese in it. The chicken parmigian was pounded and cooked so long that my husband thought it was veal. The chef was very courteous and quickly cooked him another one. We did not drink any wine but they were not cheap at around $9 per glass. The selection on the menu looked great and we would come back again."

  • "I was in rehearsal with a group of friends and we decided to go out to lunch together. I looked on Opentable for what was available and this menu appealed to us most, so we went here. The food did not disappoint and there were large portions--the white mussel appetizer was especially delicious, and we shared it amongst four people--and i was impressed by the marinara sauce on my shortrib ravioli. Great spot, we were the only customers at the time so I cany say much for their service and noise level, naturally the former was impeccable and the latter nearly silent."

  • "Myhusband I went to the Barra's prior to going to a local theatre in the area. Selected this restaurant based on reviews. The food was good (not great). The service was very good. We were actually done eating earlier than we anticipated. Would try it again but not the best Italian food."
    Dined on 12/21/2013
  • "This restaurant needs to decide if it is meant to be a bar-food place or a real restaurant. Our salads and appetizers hit the mark but when both of our entrees came, the meal went flat! Maybe stick to small plates, pizzas and bar food. I think this is where you excel."
    Dined on 12/20/2013
  • "The burgers and chicken sandwiches are wrapped in A thin layer of pizza dough & cooked in their pizza ovens. They are delicious & unusual...A must try."

  • "Not the most amazing place. Not going to be dreaming about the baked penne. Red sauce is average. Friendly service."

  • "Fantastic food, friendly staff, reasonable prices, pleasant atmosphere - what more could you ask for?"

  • "A very pleasant surprise. Barra had a solid breakfast/brunch menu but my wife and I went with lunch foods. She had a BLT with speck instead of bacon and I had one of their famous burgers. They make their burgers wrapped in pizza dough, which is cooked in their brick over. Both lunches were very tasty. We would come back for these items. Also price was reasonable."

  • "I ended up at BARRA on a whim when I was in the city - excellent Italian food, and somewhere I'd definitely visit again when I'm in the area. The bar was lively and sometimes loud, though considering it was a Saturday night, that's to be expected. Just a good, solid Italian meal."

  • "Been there a couple times for lunch and was pleasantly Surprised at how good the food was. They bake a lot of Items in their pizza oven including their cheeseburgers Which they wrap in a thin jacket of pizza dough. They are Delicious and made with high quality beef. Salads Are also fresh & not overly dressed."

  • "The service was excellent. The happy hour prices are very good. All of the food we had that evening was EXCELLENT. I guess you have to have good food to survive in Old City. We will definitely go back there."

  • "A friend and I made a reservation and showed up early. The place was busy but they sat us immediately. We waited 15 minutes for a glass of water, another 10 minutes to meet our server. We placed our full order at that time. 20 minutes later our wine arrived. 25 minutes later our tasteless beet salad arrived. 5 minutes later our entrees arrived. When the owner walked past, we let him know that the service was non-existent and the food was not great. He said, "It's not our fault. We had over 200 reservations tonight and we're busy." Well sir, it actually is your fault. You shouldn't have taken so many reservations and you should offer to make the food a more pleasant experience. This is a service industry and you're not serving."

  • "There were 7 very hungry people at 6:45 on Saturday Night. The restaurant was packed but we should have suspected that something was wrong when the 8 people in back of us were served 1 pizza and no other food came out for 1/2 hour (in dribs and drabs). We ordered and waited about 1/2 hour for 2 appetizers and then waited and waited until 1 pasta dinner was served and then a cold ravioli and then....nothing. Asked for bread and got a basket with 5 pieces and no oil or butter. I went to another table for salt and pepper. Eventually were told by another server that only 2 of the 3 chefs showed up and the kitchen was a disaster. It took us 1hr. 45 minutes for dinner only....never asked us if we wanted coffee or dessert."
    Dined on 11/16/2013
  • "The food, once we got it, was very good. That said, the meals are relatively simplistic and it took over an hour and a half to get the entree. Our server barely seemed to know we were there and we had empty glasses for a while until the woman I was with complained to the manager. The food was good but not good enough to support the lousy service."
    Dined on 11/16/2013
  • "Waitstaff seemed very confused all night including bringing the wrong food and not coming to a new table quickly. Food took a long time to come out and when it did it lacked flavor (not bad food just bland)."
    Dined on 11/16/2013
  • "We were sat by the kitchen so there was a lot of foot traffic and there wasn't much space for servers to get by, they would often knock our table when passing through. Our server was very quiet and not attentive. The reservation I had was for 7:15, it took about 20 minutes to get seated and another 45 minutes for our food to come out. With all that said, the Hawaiian pizza and the mussels in white sauce were fantastic. I may get pizza from barra again, but it'll be carry out."
