Diner Reviews
  • "Restaurant is freezing! Good food, wine, service, but not enough heat! Everything I've ever ordered has been excellent, the house wine is very very good and very generous."

  • "I came here with a group of 5 girls on a Wednesday. The restaurant was very full when we arrives around 7pm, and quickly emptied for a theatre show nearby that was starting at 8. The restaurant was cold, we were sitting near the door and the weather outside was freezing but I don't think we should have felt it so much. We could not stay for coffee or dessert as we all needed to get up and start moving to get warm. The food and service was great, they let us taste some wines before choosing a bottle and the restaurant let me change the number on my reservation very easily. The salads with an added protein were equivalent to an entree salad in our experience and a pizza can definitely be split between 2/3. If you are super hungry or a guy you could eat a whole pizza. We had a great night and I would go back, just on a cold day I would ask for a table away from the door and the floor to ceiling windows."

  • "Overall, we had a very nice time here. The food was very good, as was the atmosphere. Our service was a little slow, but he was a very nice guy so that made up for it. It's definitely a great spot to go to before a show at the Walnut Steeet Theatre. I would recommend to family and friends anytime. :-)"

  • "Food was very good, if a bit oily, menu is imaginative. The house red wine was very good, but too expensive ($25/bottle) for a house wine. The hostess was especially warm and welcoming, and the waiters were friendly and funny. It was a fairly late Sunday night, so the place was not crowded and we could have a great conversation. Turning off the three televisions above the bar, playing football, would have been nice. I would definitely return."

  • "This is a very nice place for pre -theater dinner. Italian specialties and pizza give you a nice range of choices. though it is a bit noisy, we will definitely go there again."

  • "Upon arriving there was a short wait. Seated upstairs where room was filled with smoke from venting problem. Moved downstairs to high table that was uncomfortable. Ordered salad and pizza. Salad was good, but ordinary. Pizza had no flavor. Was expecting a pizza restaurant to have a more flavorful sauce. Diner next to us waiting at least 15 minutes for a cappuccino. Ran out of coffee cups and served it in a paper cup. Will not return, too many restaurants to try."

  • "We have dined here twice. The food is very good and the location is very convenient to many venues in Center City. The noise level verges on unpleasant at times."

  • "My mom and I decided to go to Stella Rosa before our 8 p.m. Show at the Walnut Street Theater and it was excellent! We sat upstairs and enjoyed the nice ambiance the place had to offer. The food was delicious and service was fantastic. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to show goers and to those looking for a great meal to enjoy with friends and family. My mom and I will be back for dinner before our next show!"

  • "We came here after a weekend afternoon matinee. It was already busy at 5 p.m., so I was glad we had reservations. The atmosphere was casual but friendly. The waiter was very friendly. We were all adults, but I saw children there and think it would be a good place for a family. Would come back."

  • "Took my best friend to Stella Rossa for her birthday before going to the Walnut Street theater. The food was excellent! We both has the 3 course prix fixe menu. The waiter, Gerry, was very accommodating, attentive and professional, as well as cheerful! He made the dining experience even more enjoyable than I expected. We weren't rushed through our meal and were able to relax before our play. My husband and I always go to this restaurant before the theater and this visit definitely made me want to return. Keep the price fixe menu. It's a great addition to your menu!!!!"

  • "This was my first visit to Stella Rossa and I would go back. I went with a friend earlier in the evening before a show. There were only a couple of tables filled it wasn't a packed house. The service was great, the food was pretty good, the food and wine were reasonably priced."

  • "Stella Rossa was OK. Been there several times and it is consistent but not great. Arrancini had some uncooked rice, otherwise OK. I'd rather have water in water glasses and wine in wine glasses, not the other way around"

  • "My son has several food allergies, and besides having a gluten free menu with lots of options, the chef came out and validated all our concerns and prepared my son's dish with TLC. I highly recommend this restaurant. The food was excellent and they were very accommodating!!! Also, a great atmosphere!"

  • "a restaurant can be empty, and they seat people next to your table especially 4 loud women cackling & speaking loud? Makes no sense, when the rest of the restaurant had a few diners at the other end. Lunch had a special and that was fine. A short rib sandwich, comparable to a steak sandwich was quite tasty along w/a salad Waiter very animated & had a few tables so he was in constant motion, but very good. Would go back & send others, good location"

  • "We found by accident after a major traffic jam on 76. We were late for reservations at another restaurant. They would not hold our table. Walking by Stella Rossa we said could you get a party of 4 in and they said yes. They got us right in and the service and food was fabulous! We have now visited 3 times and each time the service and food has been exceptional ! I recommend the Oreo Cookie Espresso shooter for desert. It will not disappoint. ..."

  • "Diner food quality. Very disappointing. It was inexpensive. It's off our list of places to go, no matter how convenient it is to the Walnut Street Theater. The server, Greg was nice. He should probably find a job at a good restaurant."

  • "If in the area and want a little more low key dining experience, you should go here. Our waiter was a bit rude, but the owner made up for it. Would go back for the excellent gnocchi dish!"

  • "Very, very loud inside and not helped by the music being blasted right by our table. They also ran out of two of the wines we ordered. A wine bar running out of wine? We had gone for a special birthday celebration, but couldn't even hear the other folks at the table."

  • "Our meal at Stella Rossa Ristorante was okay, not bad, not great, just okay. I ordered a glass of wine and to my dismay, they were out of all red wines by the glass except one. Our appetizer came very quickly, braised meatballs. Our entrees were okay as well, penne a la vodka and eggplant parmesan. The service was acceptable considering how crowded the restaurant was. So would we go back? Yes, we would try them again but would order pizza next time."

  • "This is a convenient restaurant with a good menu for dinner before the show at the Walnut Street Theater. Plus a discount is offered for theater goers. Service is friendly and food is good. The pizza has a wonderfully thin crispy crust."

  • "I went with a group of 9 people for dinner for my birthday on a Saturday, and we had the best time! The food was good, but even better, the service was fantastic (we loved our waiter, Jerry!) and we got to sit upstairs in a more secluded space allowing us more room and a quieter atmosphere to be able to talk with the group."

  • "Great place to eat, drink and be happy afterwards. If you're in center city shopping or just handling business Stella is a great place to stop for lunch, dinner a cocktail or all the above. Friendly staff. Great ambiance. Awesome food."

  • "We arrived at the restaurant at 10:20am, and although they advertised opening at 10am, the doors were locked and no one answered the door until we called. The lights were not on and the waitstaff was not ready for customers. We didn't stay long before leaving for another restaurant."

  • "Ate here for Restaurant Week--very disappointed. Ran out of one of the special entrees; food portions small; food was just warm, not hot; coffee was not hot; not at all a good value for the money. Overall a disappointing experience."

  • "My friends and I met at Stella Rossa Ristorante for a quick pre-theater dinner. The service was outstanding. George, our waiter, was knowledgeable and very helpful without being instrusive. The beet salad was especially tasty...sweet golden beets, crisp fresh greens and the dressing finished the dish perfectly."

  • "While the food was very good, the restaurant was ill prepared to accommodate the Walnut Street Theatre matinee crowd. The servers were friendly and curteous, however, it took over 20 minutes to receive our drinks, food was not delivered in unison for the table, coffee was served in paper cups which challenged my restrained comments. The manager intuitively sensed a problem and made some effort to compensate for the poor service. To be fair, the blame should be weighted on management not having the foresight to prepare in advance for a Thursday matinee crowd. I will go back because of the food and the way the issues were addressed. If however history repeats itself, Stella Rosa's existence will be short-lived."

  • "Not impressed with the food and server only came over to get us our first round of drinks and food. We didn't see him again until we were done eating. We couldn't even get a second around of drinks cause no wait staff was around."

  • "My wife and I were in for a theater show, coincidentally, it happened to be restaurant week and we chose Stella Rossa. They were flexible and courteous when we changed the timing of of reservation... twice. A brick oven kitchen and good bottle and tap selection. We would like to visit again for a pizza or two with friends. Their neopolitan crust was a specialty and very good. Thanks to the staff for a very pleasant meal and experience!"

  • "This was an okay spot focused on turning the tables quickly. The food was average and portions are are the small side. The food itself was good but not exceptional. The service was below average."
    Dined on 9/13/2014
  • "The food was really good. Did not too much like the service. We didnt get any bread... but the table next to us did. We had to ask for some after we notice that they had some that was just brought to them. Also our server was switched in the middle of our dinner. But the food was very good."

  • "Second visit. First was lunch with a selection of cheese, olives, and meats that you can choose, and of course the pizza. Second time dinner including one Restaurant Week selecton. Verizon tasty, service was attentive, and upstairs was nice and laid back. Nice selection of beer and wine. Next time want to start with Happy Hour."

  • "I ordered the same salad as the last time. The beet salad with goat cheese. I have a nut allergy and they added more of the other ingredients to make up for the missing nuts. I would have liked a substitute but not complaining. My lunch companions loved their food too one order chicken piccata the other a meatball sub and fries which that gutted the roll upon request. Fries were tasty! A must try restaurant if you are in the area. Do not judge by the temporary sign, hopefully this spot is here to stay."

  • "Our reservation was at 6:30, the kitchen did not get our appetizer out until after 8. The food was not great, definitely not worth the 1.5 hour wait."
