Diner Reviews
  • "Dined here last weekend for 35th birthday. Very impressed! The seasonal Spring menu gave us more options than we could select. Each dish was a great balance of complimentary flavors and textures. The staff was informative and engaged."

  • "We have dined at Barolo Grill many times, food is always perfect! Consistency is important, esp for a restaurant with a long history like this one, and they nail it. We have always had great service, with very personable waitstaff. This was unfortunately the exception. Our waiter was a bit smug and impatient. Seemed like he couldn't multitask- got one diner's drink order, then ran off to the bar before taking anyone else's drink order. This continued through the night. He wasn't all that thorough in explaining the menu and didn't really seem interested in us at all. I love good food but I HATE bad service. No matter how much I spend, I want good service, but especially when our total was $600! I will go back for the food though."

  • "It had been almost 5 years since we've dined at the Barolo. Still in my opinion, the best restaurant in Denver. I consider a good restaurant something that should a true experience and the main event for the evening. Not a meal before a show. Barolo delivers! It was my wife's birthday and I was rewarded for my choice. She loved it. We made our own tasting menu, sharing just one one dish from each course. It was the way to go. So much fun and all the more romantic to share the whole meal. Everything was outstanding. The gnocchi was our favorite. The buffalo tenderloin appetizer however is a very close second. Our waiter was extremely helpful in helping us select our pairings. Each course seemed better than the last. Highly recommended!"

  • "The beet salad and seared scallop dish were outstanding. The flavors in each of these dishes complimented one another superbly. The other starters were less memorable. We chose to share the beet salad, split two small starters (pasta) and the main dish (scallops). We also purchased a bottle of wine. The bill was well over $100 yet we were still charged for several split plates. For a restaurant that encourages sharing several small plates, this seemed like we were being nickle-and-dimed and will make us think twice about returning."

  • "The meal was amazing...try the carpaccio and mushroom souffle. The anchovi risotto and berkshire pork tenderloin was a real treat. Very firendly patrons too. While sitting at the bar for a pre-dinner cocktail, a patron shared some great tips...split some dishes since the portions are generous. Good advice. Wine, yes a robust list, maybe overwhelming unless you are very familiar with Italian wines. Again, advice from the patron; use Ryan, the bartender for wine advice and he was spot on! We had a wonderful 2001 Super Tuscan 100% Cab Franc - Vignamaggio Toscana. Topped off a wonderful 50th bday dinner with my lovely wife!!"

  • "I hadn't been to this restaurant in about 15+ years. That it's still there is already notable but the food was amazing. Creative and tasty. The wait staff was knowledgeable about both the food and the wine list making for a very tasty and enjoyable evening."

  • "A cozy table by the fireplace, the best service we have gotten in this area for a very long time, what more could you ask for,oh great food!!! We started with the foie gras terrine.A little piece of heaven. Love that they serve smaller portions of pasta, tried the strozzapreti cooked it perfection. Felt like we were back in Italy. The seared scallops were wonderful and the tagliatelle d'agnello did not disappoint. Not a bad thing on this menu. The homemade biscotti was Devine bite after bite. We will make the trip back from Boulder just for this restaurant. Our waitress was so attentive without being annoying. Great evening all around."

  • "This is a very pretentious restaurant - great if you are a fat cat wearing an ascot in your sports coat. Make sure you bring pearls or you'll feel out of place. Food was just good, but for the prices you'd expect better."

  • "We celebrated my wife's 50th birthday with family and out-of-town surprise guests and had an absolutely wonderful dining experience! We were seated in the private wine room which was the perfect setting and all of our meals, the Slovenian wine and service was outstanding. Thanks for making this a very special evening. We look forward to coming back."

  • "Was really looking forward to dining here, as I had heard and read good things. The atmosphere was stuffy and dated. Our waiter was not very attentive, recommended everything on the menu (instead of highlighting the standouts), and the food did not stand out. For the price, I expect everything to be spot on, and some dishes were lacking. A disappointing meal."

  • "Handmade pasta, great wine and great service. We will be back regularly!"

  • "Barolo Grill was very enjoyable. The staff was terrific, very friendly, attentive, and aiming to please. The menu was interesting, but not the best for my taste. My food was good, but nothing special. The presentation of the food, and the ambience of the restaurant were excellent. I would consider going there again for a special occasion. You are definitely paying for the service and ambience, because it was quite expensive."

  • "Lukewarm Frito Mixto. Issue with decanting of wine and none of our 4 meals could be described as more than average. Risotto was also lukewarm. Subpar given our other visit."

  • "This was our first time to dine at Barolo Grill and it was superb. The food was excellent (savory, fresh, a creative take on traditional dishes...) from start to finish and our server could not have been better. The staff and food at Barolo Grill made the evening, a birthday celebration for my husband, extra special."

  • "Service was the best I have had lately. Very knowledgeable; helpful."

  • "I had been to Barolo a few years ago and had outstanding food. I even declared the risotto the best I had ever had. This time the food was very bland. My co-worker had the gnocchi and had to add salt to give it any flavor. My dish was just ok. I will give it another try but really surprised."

  • "We've had many delicious dinners at Barolo Grill over the years. The last time we were here though, it was not as good as in past visits, so it has been a couple years. We decided to go back during Restaurant Week. I'm glad we didn't pay what we usually do because it was hugely disappointing. The food was bland and uninspiring. The wine pairings nothing special. I don't expect we will go back. The restaurant scene in Denver has become quite competitive and Barolo just hasn't kept up."
    Dined on 2/26/2014
  • "The staff was exceptional, knowledgeable, and passionate about the wines and how the all the food was prepaired for each dish. This is why I enjoy dining at Barolo, excellent!"
    Dined on 3/11/2014
  • "Convenient valet parking, great food, and exceptional comprehensive service (coat check, etc). Only 4 stars for food this time because the lobster risotto was a bit watered down."
    Dined on 3/11/2014
  • "I am prone to have the tasting menu which may be the best in Denver right now; reliably delicious, interesting and builds with each course. Portion size was perfect; we were not over stuffed and yet no twee dishes arranged with tweezers. The restaurant is decorated beautifully which also provides sound insulation to allow for quiet conversation, yet it is not so quiet that it feels like you can be overhead. This contrasts with the cement chic of some restaurants I like a lot (Spuntino, The Plimoth) but when full are too noisy; who really wants to pay for a nice meal and not be able to hold a conversation? We had a fabulous server: so knowledgable and helpful. A full rave for this place from me!"

  • "I hadn't been to Barolo in years and figured that maybe they had lost their "freshness." Not so, however, as everything had the feel and dedication of an uptown, just-opened hot spot, yet it was still the Barolo Grill…our long time neighborhood gem. Better than ever!"

  • "I took my girlfriend here for her birthday having never been. I knew it was going to be a little pricey, but I was worried about service for the price. Our waitress, (I forgot her name) was very helpful in explaining the menu to a first timer. The good was beautifully and artistically presented and plated. The meals were portioned well so you are not uncomfortably full afterward! The good was delicious and I would definitely recommend and come back!"

  • "Our experience with Barolo Grill goes back at least 20 years. They have maintained their level of excellence throughout this period,---- rare for this part of the world. We spend much time in Europe (second residence in Mougins/France, within a moderate drive from Piemonte. Our favorite restaurants in Italy are the Piazza Duomo in Alba and Le Calandre in Rubano (both 3 stars Michelin). By those standards, Barolo might be a 1 Michelin star candidate, one of very few in Colorado. Barolo Grill, applying these standards is surely among Denver's "Top Five"."

  • "Restaurant week can be very hit or miss with a lot of great restaurants providing sub-par experiences due to the over whelming volume of people that can flood their spaces. The two times I've been lucky enough to go to Barolo this has never been the case. This last experience was especially nice. We had a group of 8 people and although our reservation was a little on late side, were able to get a private table in a back room, which was a great surprise. In addition, the service was superb. The server was able to steer us to a couple cocktails and wine recomendations more on the value side (for us even $30 pp constitutes a big splurg). The food was likewise exceptional. All of the dishes were served warm and at the correct temperature."

  • "Another amazing meal during Denver Restaurant Week. You can always expect a great meal and wine at Barolo."
    Dined on 2/28/2014
  • "The food was excellent! Enjoyed the butternut squash soup and the pana cotte for dessert! The wine list was a little pricey, it would be nice to have a few less expensive wines to choose from."
    Dined on 2/28/2014
  • "The wine list is amazing, unfortunately the food was not at the same level. The foie gras was old and oxidated. The sweatbreads in the gnochi were deep fried and had lost all of their subtle taste. The sauce with the duck was deglaced with to much vinegar and therefore very sour. The restaurant has all the right ingredients but unfortunately not the level of kitchen staff to life up to the expectations."

  • "The two of us have come here 3x each on the 5280 event. 2012 & 2013- outstanding. 2 nights ago, was not up to what we remember. Something changed. We're guessing a new chief, or a big cut-back in the food. Portions were smaller, fringing on skimpy, and the two selections were not the outstanding flavors, spices, and gourmet experience that we expected. The presentation- still beautiful, creating art. We got both menu selections- one each, so could sample both entries. We will call & find out if the chef changed. Appetizer and 1st course excellent. Portion on appetizer and 2nd course skimpy. Pasta on the 1st course just right and wonderful. I hate to be negative on Barolo Grill- it's an institution on 6th, but we were disappointed."
    Dined on 2/27/2014
  • "We went there for 5280 week and were really excited for the meal. The first and second course were amazing, no complaints there. I paid the extra 9 dollars to get the steak and it came out cold. The plate and potatoes were so hot you couldn't eat the potatoes or touch the plate. They did comp my glass of wine for mistake. Overall I have found that the nicer end restraunts that participate in restraunt week really lack good service and their food quality isn't the best. It was so loud in there too, making it difficult to have a romantic evening. I wasn't impressed. We won't be dining there again."

  • "Barolo Grill is one of those places we save for special. Dining there is just that, dining, not eating. Restaurant week brings an opportunity to try things in small portions - which is a good thing. The salad, soup, risotto and steak were a hit with our group of six. The pasta was labeled ordinary, and the fish too fishy and too salty for 3 of the 4 who chose it. Dessert was delicious."
    Dined on 2/27/2014
  • "The food not only tastes great, but the presentation is beautiful."
    Dined on 2/26/2014
  • "This was our second time Barolo Grill during Denver Restaurant Week. They do a wonderful job of offering a varied menu and trying to impress which isn't easy with a packed house. Both times we've taken advantage of the optional wine pairings, and that makes the evening all the more special."
    Dined on 2/25/2014
  • "Superb. The waitress knew exactly what wines to pair with our dishes. A little noisy, but the place was packed. Very unique flavors. The chef's a genius! It's our standard 5280 place."
    Dined on 2/25/2014
  • "We went as part of 5280 Denver Restaurant week. Overall the portions were well sized, and we got 4 courses instead of the usual three which was a nice surprise. The Prosciutto toscana-thinly sliced tuscan prosciutto, buratta cheese, ciabatta crisp was excellent, as was the Risotto ai funghi-acquerello carnaroli rice slow cooked with foraged mushrooms, broccolini, mascarpone cheese. The location offers valet which is nice because parking in the neighborhood can be a challenge, and the coat check was a nice touch as well. there is a fireplace inside which added to the overall ambiance. Will definitely go back."
