A word from Barnyard

Barnyard is an intimate, neighborhood restaurant by Chef Jesse Barber. Bringing a soulful menu of small and shared plates, small-production beers and naturally farmed wines to Venice.

Known for his mastery of seafood and respect for seasonal produce, Barber cooks with a nod to classical French and Japanese techniques. House-made sausages, slow-cooked stocks and seasonal produce are meticulously cared for; the quality refelects Barber's training under Thomas Keller, at French Laundry and Bouchon.

As the opening Chef de Cuisine at The Tasting Kitchen in Venice, Jesse led a troupe of talented, young professionals on a journey that involved late nights, early mornings and loads of commitment to their culinary craft. They transformed the space from near bankruptcy into one of GQ's “Top 10 Restaurants in America” and nominee for three James Beard Awards.

  • "The small plates at Barnyard are so good that you should order them all! There's almost no need to get a main but the Pilota (like a crispy risotto) is good for sharing. My favorites of the small plates are the small salads--kale and butter lettuce salads were delicious--and the grilled bread is outstanding!"

  • "One of the top meals we've had in a long time. The decor is not fancy at all, but the food and service were wonderful. A real gourmet experience."

  • "This is an amazing little restaurant in a very hot location. It's in the heart of Venice, but is out of the Venice density. The small plates are interesting, delicious and something for everyone, even a vegetarian like me. The chef does amazing, creative food. The wait staff are knowledgeable and very friendly and helpful. I have been there a couple of times and it is currently my favorite restaurant."

  • "The food relies heavily on seasonal vegetables. The combinations are surprising and delicious. We always come away delighted."

  • "Found this on OpenTable - looked interesting. Showed up - was a bit taken aback by the casual decor and all - but then sat down. Service was extremely attentive and food was absolutely amazing. Wine list was very interesting - with a lot of vintages that you don't often see everywhere, and not horrifically overpriced like most restaurant wine. They went a little slow between appetizers and main course, but on their own came out, apologized, and gave us another appetizer on the house to hold us over. Looking forward to going back to try some other things on the menu. Overall very pleased with the experience."

  • "After reading all the negative reviews regarding this restaurant, we were hesitant to dine at Barnyard. What a mistake that would have been! This is our new favorite place for creative, simple food that is infused with wonderful flavors. We loved the half-chicken, farm to table butter lettuce salad, risotto pilota and especially the super fresh cruda. Our recommendation: try everything on the menu. This is one of those places where the wait staff treat customers like dear friends, attentive and casual service that includes detailed information on each dish. Street parking is readily available within blocks, especially if you are willing to walk off the delicious apple pie dessert. The price is a bargain for the quality received."

  • "Dinner was overall delicious and vibrant. The only thing we didn't like was the fava bean salad. Having spent many an hour shucking fava beans and then peeling off the outer skin on each bean, I understand the desire to create a wonderful way to serve the whole thing. It just didn't work for us. The pod was too tough and stringy. The skin on the bean takes away from the delicious sweet flavor and texture of the bean. Spring time means fava beans, little jewels you have to work for! Needless to say we love Barnyard and we do appreciate the adventurous cooking attempt."

  • "I have been to Barnyard at least four times. On this visit we were greeted by the host telling us we would only have our table until 8:30 and would we please be mindful of that. Then the waiter literally hovered around us, pushing us, giving us our final check while we were still dining. Not such a great experience. I'll try it again because I really like the ambiance and the food...but the feeling of being rushed was a spoiler for our party. I spoke with the host about this as I left but he didn't seem to be hearing me...was defensive and blamed Open Table for needing to warn us about his schedule (we were 10 minutes late for our reservation, but I called ahead and let them know we were in traffic and on our way). Great food though."

  • "It was ok. It wasn't bad but it wasn't special. To me a 16 dollar burger should be better. I also personally don't like how they tell you that you can buy the kitchen a beer for 10 bucks. How about you give them some for free rather than charging me?"

  • "This was the most memorable meal I've had in a very long time! I'm from the SF Bay Area and travel to SoCal with my husband occasionally for work. He's in the wine industry and were booth foodies with a palette for sustainable, fresh, clean food. Barnyard did not disappoint, and has become my favorite gem in Southern California. I can't wait to go back. The octopus was the best I have ever had... I am still dreaming about it! And the staff - they are so authentic and wonderful. So personable and accommodating, especially for us high maintenance gluten free types. I love them! This is a wonderful place."

  • "On our first visit, I tend to be cautious (I'm not that good with change), and maybe even a little harsh. I noticed that our server really understood the menu and easily conveyed it to us no matter how many questions I asked. Even though we arrived just as they opened their doors the dishes appeared in a timely manner. We felt incredibly welcomed, with a sense of accommodation and efficiency. Most important to me, was hearing about the chef and his dedication to the tastes & textures integrated to work in a pleasing result. Each dish was fresh, well prepared, a delight to our senses as well as our taste buds. And perhaps most importantly, how are the soups? Show me a great soup and I'll almost always show you a great restaurant."

  • "The Valentine's prix fixe menu was out of this world. I come here all the time but my girlfriend is much pickier about where she eats and she loved everything. The wine pairings perfectly complemented our dishes. I love the food here, whether it's a special menu or their standard fare, which is constantly rotating with seasons. My favorite place to eat in Venice hands down."

  • "This is a GEm of a place, this time i thought the food was too greasy, a lot of fried foods that i didn't expect. The BREAD is always a treat but i think the specials this time did not compliment the the fabulous fried bread. Too much!"

  • "The portion sizes from the appetizers to the entrees were really small. I actually prefer normal portions not large portions because I don't like to over eat. Maybe this would be okay if the food was amazing but it was just alright. And the prices did not seem that expensive till the plate came to the table and everyone realized that we needed twice as much food as we actually ordered. So I won't be back and I would not recommend the place to anyone. There are way better places to go in the area."

  • "A group of four of us all loved our food and the cheery attitude of the staff. I wouldn't go here if you're starving, tThe portions of even the largest plates are modest but in a good way, you don't overeat and all the flavors are delicate and yummy. he tag team way they wait on you, however, led to some confusion, when one waiter took a wine order, then a second one gave us the happy hour menu so we switched our wine order, then that order was mistakenly brought to the table twice."

  • "I must have walked by the Barnyard a thousand times and didn't really notice it from the outside. I'm so lucky someone mentioned it to me as an area favorite. I had some of the best mussels and bread I've ever had, and a wonderful winter salad. The service is lovely too. Thank you!"

  • "Not only did the food look incredible but the dishes were absolutely incredible when it came to taste. Beef tartare and the sea trout were perfection, literally heard heaven bells with every bite. Not only that but it was incredibly well priced. I can't wait to go back!!!"

  • "We had a good meal at Barnyard and an overall good experience with just a few uneven moments. Delicious starters and the mains (halibut) were well-executed. The one thing that knocked stars off was that we were a bit cold seated in the back area. It's essentially a covered porch and, at night, it gets pretty chilly unless they turn on the heat lamps. For some reason, nobody thought to do that until we were headed to the door at the end of our meal. Wait staff was friendly but still seems a tiny bit rough around the edges. Overall experience was good but seemed a little less-than-polished for the price point."

  • "disappointed in the food. Small portions and most of the dishes were tasteless"

  • "Excellent, friendly service. Love the happy hour menu. Amazing flavors in all the food. Who knew radishes and butter could taste so wonderful together! Chef, you are a genius! I can't wait to dine at Barnyard again."

  • "Wonderful service, so friendly and inviting! Food was very unusual. Lots of little extra seasoning and spices. Forget your calories and enjoy the home baked goodies."

  • "From the moment we walked in, my date and I felt well taken care of. The waiter made excellent recommendations on the menu and the food did not disappoint. The environment was casual with a sense of style. Great place to spend an evening!"

  • "I bring a new friend each time I dine at Barnyard. People from near and far. The meal and the experience is great each time. Never forced. Just simple, clean and perfect like their dishes. The wine list is thoughtful and a perfect complement."

  • "We dined here on 2/3/14 and generally enjoyed our experience. We ordered a wide variety of food (including all of the entrees), but did not leave wowed by the food. There was one dish, the gnocchi, that was unbelievable. Second-best was the sausage and Brussels sprouts. But the burger, rice dish, and fish were all just okay. The biggest disappointment of the night was the chicken, which was completely undercooked and pink inside. We had to send it back, and the kitchen agreed. That said, I would still come back for the gnocci and excellent vibe / beer list."

  • "Almost every trendy mid-priced restaurant is doing the small bites thing. In order to stay in business, one must stand a cut above the rest. Barnyard is a cut above. It is very loud, no matter where you sit inside. The patio is quiet, but you must contend with smokers, who I believe are not legally allowed to smoke near an eating establishment, but I could be wrong. In any case, after a nice glass of a well sourced wine, you won't mind the noise -- too much."

  • "This is a place to which you can go if you want to stay consistent with your dietary regime but still enjoy fabulous, creative food. I love their roasted octopus and along with the brussel sprout appetizer was a perfect meal for me. There are so many choices on the menu so if you want to indulge, you won't have any trouble doing that. The wait staff is prompt and attentive. The chef and hostess are partners. Very pleasant atmosphere; warm, friendly, terrific food and drink. Street parking nearby too on a Friday night just a short walk away north of Venice Blvd."

  • "Food creative and satisfying as always, many great vegetable choices. In my view, a better meal than a recent one at Chez Panisse. One small gripe: the back room, though closed in, was chilly."
    Dined on 12/31/2013
  • "The food was outstanding however the fumes from the many oil based candles on the tables in the outside room upset my palette. Other that this, the presentation, tastes and service were excellent."

  • "We only received 100 pts for this restaurant. It's listed as a 1000 pt table if you reserve at 6:15 pm, which we did. Can you please look into this for me? Thanks, Sandie Graham"

  • "We really enjoyed the Barnyard! The food was incredible, yet very reasonably priced. The decor is relatively basic, but comfortable. We were surprised by how low the bill was at the end of the evening. They were fairly busy when we arrived so it took a few minutes for the host to seat us, but nothing problematic."

  • "The Barnyard was a fantastic experience all around. The lighting was dim, which gave off a romantic and homey feeling. Our server was knowledgeable about the food, recommending which starters go well together. Don't miss out on the Beet Tarinne and Bread with homemade strawberry jam. The main courses are perfectly paired flavors and textures, that don't disappoint! The monkfish was savory, served with broccoli rabe for a nice crunch. This restaurant is perfect for a date night, special occasion, or the ultimate dining experience."

  • "Fell well short of expectations. Bread and cheese plates were fine but nothing special. Our crudo was near flavorless, chewy and downright bad. Gnocchi was ok but uninspired. I've made better at home. I forgot what our dessert was but I guess it was decent. The standout was the octopus, of which I was initially leery, but it turned out to be a nice surprise. My dinner companion said it was the best she'd ever had. Service was friendly and efficient. Some good beers available. We had a nice little nook on the patio that was quite nice. Recent meals at Abigaile, tasting kitchen, gjelina, and a.o.c Winebar were definitely better and no more expensive. I doubt I'll return to barnyard. Too many good restaurants out there to waste time..."
