A word from Barnyard

Barnyard is an intimate, neighborhood restaurant by Chef Jesse Barber. Bringing a soulful menu of small and shared plates, small-production beers and naturally farmed wines to Venice.

Known for his mastery of seafood and respect for seasonal produce, Barber cooks with a nod to classical French and Japanese techniques. House-made sausages, slow-cooked stocks and seasonal produce are meticulously cared for; the quality refelects Barber's training under Thomas Keller, at French Laundry and Bouchon.

As the opening Chef de Cuisine at The Tasting Kitchen in Venice, Jesse led a troupe of talented, young professionals on a journey that involved late nights, early mornings and loads of commitment to their culinary craft. They transformed the space from near bankruptcy into one of GQ's “Top 10 Restaurants in America” and nominee for three James Beard Awards.

Diner Reviews
  • "Reserved for 11 people on sat 9pm. Had beer, halibut crudo, tomatoes, and lamb. Bites of friend's octopus and grilled bread were great. Group was happy and I'd return."

  • "Great space but over priced and small portions not sure if I will be back - there are other restaurants with better prices"
    Dined on 8/22/2014
  • "The food was quite good, but very expensive. The wine list did not have the types of wine we were wanting and the glasses are very expensive as well."

  • "I really wanted to love Barnyard, but I only liked it. Some of the food was great (octopus, seasonal peach salad). But, unfortunately, for my tastes, it was not all that memorable. Sorry. Over-all, I feel that I really over-paid for just "good" food."

  • "Barnyard is a gourmet retreat amongst hot dog vendors. Wine list is way overpriced (3x wholesale+) and unfathomable. I am a wine lover and I did not recognize one bottle. All over $45, and many over $80. Wait staff was helpful by offering sips, but in the end we could not find a white wine to our liking. Shame on you, Barnyard! I perceive this approach is intended to run up the wine bill! We had the chef's tasting menu. Way too much food to handle, but most dishes were tasty, none truly extraordinary."

  • "Service was solid, food was excellent. The raddichio salad and gnocchi with crab were amazing. The grilled bread was wonderful, but we filled up too quickly on it, so use restraint. Only complaint is that some of the screened windows have holes, allowing a few flies into the dining area. But don't let that stop you - the food is really, really good."

  • "Great food. Nice atmosphere. Accompanied changes to our group size without a problem."

  • "Make's this place a fantastic experience - I'll be back!"

  • "We went to Barnyard on a restauranteur's recommendation. We placed ourselves in the hands of chef Jesse and our server Richard, who suggested he would bring whatever Jesse suggested and match that small plate with a wine. It was a wonderful idea and a memorable meal."

  • "Went here because a friend raved. All around it was a bad experiece for our table of five. The portions on the main plates were extremely small and rather boring and the presentation was unattractive. Our bill had to be corrected three times. We had five different people wait on us and no one seemed to get anything right. Bad management. Don't know what the raves are about. Wouldnot go back."

  • "It was probably dumb to focus on seafood at this land-named restaurant. But that’s what we did. The grilled octopus appetizer was the best. The warm olives also great. And the fish belly crudo we had was terrific. But the mussels dish disappointed. The fish plate looked nice, but seemed ordinary, and a special house-made sausage served with a slice of tough fatty lamb wasn’t so good."

  • "Wow. We went with the omakase - chef's choice - and so glad we did. Every dish was amazing - and interesting. A great value for the money as well. And as Jonathan Gold said, on the surface so simple that you'd think you could make it yourself. Notably the yellowtail crudo, the sald with pine nuts and herb vinegarette, the fries with harissa and creme fraiche, pork links...and the raddichio salad had us puzzling over its bitterness yet cleaning the plate. Budino for dessert, wow. Very casual, entire restaurant screened windows and an outdoor patio. Very casual. Family friendly, we saw a couple of families there for Sat night dinner. We bought the kitchen 2 rounds of beer, and you should too!"

  • "What a surprise. Funky, but great ambience. Attentive waitor. Great wine recommendation. The food was unusual and excellent. I had a pork sausage with fennel on top of a marinated bean salad. The food was great. Would return. Wine list filled with European wines and the white wine recommended almost as good as greinleiner I had in Vienna. I will return."

  • "We were excited to go after hearing great things about this place. The food was excellent and always updated with fresh ingredients. I recommend checking with the restaurant on daily features and menu highlights if anyone in your party has allergies, preferences, vegetarian, etc. (it's not a huge menu). The menu that is on the OpenTable website is not accurate and some of the entrees were 2 - 3x the listed prices. Rated high for food, our waitress unfortunately wasn't attentive so docked on service."

  • "We tried the chief's tasting menu and it was truly a revelation. Brilliant food, original without being precious. Delicious tastes. Fun!"

  • "Had the tasting menu, $50, about 7 or eight courses. Fantastic food. Interesting wine list as well."

  • "Food was great, but server didn't write down our order and instead of one of the orders of salmon, gnocchi came to the table. It was attributed to a "mistake" (salmon & gnnochi don't even sound alike, forget the caloric/nutritional disparity). As I was hosting a guest for a special occasion we didn't want to create a delay or awkwardness in the evening, so we played it off as fine and we'd just go ahead an eat that dish since it was already on the table, and were happy to be told it wouldn't be on the bill. It was on the bill. So kind of a drag - given the choice between being "that guy" or being agreeable & accommodating, I feel like I made the wrong decision."

  • "The food bar at Barnyard is close to the kitchen, close to the wine, close to perfection."
    Dined on 6/16/2014
  • "We greatly enjoyed our meal, but were a little put off with the heavy selling vibe -- being asked to pay for bread, coffees running at $5 a cup, etc. Also, why do so many new restaurants want to be in your face giving you water ALL the time? Barnyard is such a place, providing small glasses that are constantly in need of refilling and a server who reaches across everyone's plates to fill them. Did they think we don't have anything to say to one another, or do they see constant "service" as a goal? Why not just leave the bottle on the table? The wine list has only a few bottles under $50 and the first one we ordered was disappointing. However, the restaurant was good enough to exchange our oops order for a great, less expensive wine."

  • "We ordered the omakase menu - chef's choice. It was fresh, absolutely delicious, and the amount of food was incredible. It seemed like they may have brought one of everything on the menu. In order to get it, the whole table needs to order it, and they accommodated one vegetarian and some other food aversions beautifully. For the price of $50 each it was a noteworthy deal, too! The back patio has a lovely atmosphere and the staff is friendly and informed. Good wine and our water glasses were always full!"

  • "This is a great restaurant for foodies! Small portions good for sharing. Decent wine selection."

  • "Everything was OK. The bread is delicious, but the wait for it was far too long. Also, why do you charge extra for bread?"

  • "This was our best dining experience in Los Angeles. We had the chef's tasting menu, well paired with wine for each course. The food was wonderful. Deceptively simple, made with the best stuff, just really great. Awesome flavor combinations. Same with dessert. Service was friendly and attentive. I could say more but I'd rather leave it as a surprise. It was a beautiful experience, everything we ate was excellent, and we all felt very comfortable in the candle lit yet laid back atmosphere! "

  • "Seated at the wrong table, moved to another one after we ordered drinks and appetizers with nothing said nor offered other than an apology. Severely poor entree timing and kitchen out of quite a few items. Dry chicken came out 8 minutes after main courses. Pea shoot salad highly acidic and hard to eat. So close to my house I was really hoping this was going to be a hit"

  • "Friendly service and good food. Parking is nuts. Randall accommodated our sudden party size increase like a champ. The grilled bread is a must, and the crudo was killer."

  • "I've never said that before, but it seemed like every 2 minutes a new staff member was coming over to ask how everything was. It started to get a bit annoying. The food was ok, cooked well just lacking flavor. We had the steak frites and salmon. Beer and wine only, a good selection but fairly pricey. I think the cheapest wine was about $12 a glass. I probably wouldn't go back, it wasn't bad but there's a lot of other places out there. We stopped off at hotel Erwin which is next door for drinks after and the food smelt amazing. "

  • "Don't believe Jonathan Gold; this place is quite overrated. The food, while altogether fine, was uninspired and a bit clunky in execution. "

  • "Food was delicious, organic and so tasty -service was incredible this place is a gem!!! "
    Dined on 5/29/2014
  • "Food was fine but overpriced. $35 for a flatiron steak is ridiculous. Yellowtail was good. Grilled bread was very good but you shouldn't have to pay extra for bread grilled and served with mayo, a bit if mustard and some preserves. "

  • "Arrived and was promptly seated. Richard are waiter looked after us very well, and had an excellent understanding of the menu, and a good feel for the wine. I don't know what it is about the US, but every time a Brit asks for a beer recommendation the answer is always something over 8%ABV. Great wine, from around the world.. Menu is imaginative and the Sea Trout Tartare was superb. Well done all"

  • "This local Venice restaurant is a nice find. The food is outstanding and the service excellent. We were made to feel very special. "

  • "What a great find for us. This small Venice restaurant serves up some magical dishes with the freshest ingredients. From the heirloom tomato and burrata salad to the gnocchi del mare (sea bass delicately tossed with homemade gnocchi) this restaurant and the creative genius of the chef blew us away. Can't wait to go back."

  • "We always enjoy going to Barnyard and went with friends who are foodies. The only negative was that the waiter suggested some wines by the glass without telling us the price. We were surprised that the glass of wine we ordered was $21. We would never pay that for one glass of wine. Our mistake ultimately because we should have asked, but we think he should have given us the cost before hand. "

  • "The Barnyard is a small restaurant with a friendly, polite, attentive, & knowledgeable staff. Our waiter accurately described the dishes without pressuring us. We were provided with tastes of beer/wine, again allowing us to make our own choices. The roasted octopus with garbanzos was terrific as was the oil- poached halibut. We all enjoyed the small plates & the entrees. Definitely a restaurant to go back to often."

  • "Service was lousy and indifferent. Four dined and we sent two dishes back. The pilota, which is basically a poser-ish was of say risotto, was like eating pebbles."
    Dined on 5/3/2014
  • "We loved the food, but sitting in the back was a bit cold. We will be back for the food for sure."
    Dined on 5/2/2014
  • "Food- Deliciously creative Beer/Wine- Triple Karmelite is the best beer ever. Wine selection was unique and exceeded expectations. Service- very attentive while not being pressuring. Very descriptive in bringing food to life. Ambiance- Simple and comfortable, while being stylish. Prices- very reasonable for area and food quality. Overall Opinion- Solid all the way around, will go back, and will recommend to everyone with confidence. "

  • "The food its not bad seems a bit average..if this place just had a little better presentation on thier dishes it would make a world of difference.the plates seem like something you can just throw together at home real quick "

  • "Barnyard's food is simple, deceptively so, and well executed. The grilled chicken, a throwaway dish a most restaurants, was a masterpiece. "
