Welcome to our home, come on in, sit down and enjoy the food our talented kitchen creates for you. Would you like a beer or wine pairing to go with your chef’s menu? We have crafted the best pairing for each so sit back and relax, we got you covered. Would you like to pick a unique bottle of beer or wine for your party? Perfect, we have that too.
Headed by Chef Bryce Gilmore, our chefs are committed to the relationships they have with our farmer friends and sharing their bounty on every plate carefully put together for our guests to enjoy.
We now take mostly reservations but walk ins are always more than welcome.

  • "This was my first time to Barley Swine, and I'd already heard great things. They no longer offered the a la carte menu, but the prix fixe 13-course meal is unbelievable. I'm a native Austinite and I love experiencing new places in my home town. It took me a while to get to it, but I have to say that Barley Swine is, without a doubt, one of my new favorites. FYI: Price wise, it's not cheap, but it is well worth it."

  • "Be prepared for 2+ hours of 13 tasting size plates of some of the most artful and deep/layered flavors and textures of cuisine. My business associate and I were in town for a conference and wanted a dining experience away. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly to the point of your almost exchanging phone numbers at meals end. When I'm in Austin next, I'll be back and also go to their sister restaurant - Odd Duck just down the street."

  • "I advised them that I could not eat gluten or soy. They seemed totally unphased by this and came up with a very interesting and delicious stream of foods. The wine pairings were fantastic, but way too much wine for me. I had thought I was getting some modified version of the wine pairings (only half of them) based on our discussion beforehand, but I got all of them. Luckily my date was able to help me out with them. I would recommend this as a fun and very different dining experience. I love that they source their foods from local growers!"

All of the dishes were interesting and delicious, service was warm and caring, and the overall value was amazing at $70 for an 8-course tasting menu.   • "The only reason I didn't give five stars was the lamb dish. I had two pieces that I had to spit out after chewing for quite some time. All gristle. Otherwise it was a five star experience. And personal preference -- I hate the high bar stool type seating. For a three hour meal they become extremely uncomfortable, especially if your feet can't rest on the rungs and end up dangling. Chair backs are also somewhat uncomfortable. Having said that, I would go back for any special occasion. The food and service were excellent."

  • "I fear change. When I heard Barley Swine was changing their menu format, I was nervous-ish. However, all fears are gone after a lovely dining experience earlier this week! Each course was exciting, beautifully arranged, and completely delicious. Every bite made us change our opinion about which course was the best. There weren't any long waits between courses despite new menu additions and we both left stuffed and incredibly happy. I can't wait to go back!"

  • "If I am going to pay $70/person and make reservations 1.5 weeks out, I expect a TABLE - instead we were seated at the BAR! This ruined my whole experience. Be wary of this place - the food was not even that good (used to be way better) and don't be fooled into the $40/person wine/beer pairings - its not worth it. I think that 13 courses is way too much for the average diner to handle and they come out in such rapid succession that you hardly even have time to process what you just ate. I will not be returning to Barley Swine - try Odd Duck instead (Barley Swine used to be so much cooler and better)."

  • "Fantastic food, amazing service. The menu is every changing and the chef is very creative in his combinations, paying immaculate attention to both taste and texture. They make it a point to use locally grown foods from Austin area farmers markets. A true gem! Plan to dine with a party of 2 (or more) as most plates are sharable, as are the tables. Small place, recommend getting reservations early (30 days in advance). The service is amazing and very Austin. While the food is at the foodie/snob caliber, their staff are very down to earth but know their menus well."

  • "Celebrated my birthday at Barley Swine on the 15th - having been there several times before, we were not disappointed! Food, Service and the overall experience were exceptional! Special thanks to Billie for making the night so enjoyable and we can't wait to be back for another phenomenal meal. Seeing the menu change as frequently as it does adds to the enjoyment of returning to Barley as your treated with great new ideas and combinations on every plate. As well, the shift to the fixed menu was a great move. Instead of trying to figure out what to pick on the menu (in times past), now you sit back and let the staff bring you each incredible taste as the meal builds to completion! There is no better meal in Austin!"

  • "I booked Barley Swine from Australia before coming to SXSW. A few days before arriving I discovered it was a 13 course degustation menu and would cost more than I thought it would so wondered if it was the right choice. But it was. I've eaten in top restaurants and this is as god as any. The dishes were inventive, different, subtle and full of flavour. Each one stone alone and a few were knock-outs. 1 taster, 10 courses, and 2 deserts combined with a pre dinner sparkling wine and a glass of cabernet sauvignon made for a memorable meal. The women servers were friendly, knowledgeable and professional and made for a really enjoyable night."

  • "Amazingly creative dishes/small plates, freshest ingredients, extremely good service, cheery accomodation/understanding of food allergies/preferences - so what's not perfect? Although ambience is very energetic, it detracts from food and contrasts with the prices - spent almost $300 for two for dinner including 4 average glasses of wine. That tab in Seattle/SFO/NYC gets you an amazing view, better wine choices, and an elegant/memorable dining experience. While being on top of the kitchen was cool, wooden bar top tables and constant loud din was far from optimal. In addition, I felt like the chef was pressured to push the ingredient list over the top with each of the 11 small courses. Glad I went to check it out, probably won't be back."

  • "Very good food, competently prepared and attractively presented. We enjoyed ourselves but the concept needs fine tuning: the change to a tasting menu of shared small plates didn't quite work for us. Some dishes that would have been great as large plates made little sense in miniature. Others (e.g. excellent tilefish) could only be shared by taking turns, we couldn't enjoy them together. Many courses were overly complex: often, fewer ingredients would have been better. Service was friendly and competent. The food was described well, the wines less so ("this is a Malbec blend from Argentina" -- no name or year). The seating isn't appropriate for a two hour meal (high chairs with only one place to rest your feet). Value: fair, not great."

  • "We have been to Barley Swine two times. The food on both evenings is not only some of the best we have had in Austin (and we are cooks ourselves) but it is so different from any place in Austin. The little plate idea lets you explore some wonderful creations that you can't find anyplace else. However, on our recent visit with the new set price, we were not happy being forced to eat 14 courses. We were pretty full at about 8, and struggled through the last half. It would be more appealing to us, for future visits, to have a smaller plate count breakdown. Maybe offer a 8 + dessert, and 10 + desert. ... it was just too much food for us."

  • "This dining experience consisted of skillfully orchestrated small plates, each delicious. It is truly a " shared" experience, as you have one plate per couple. Fresh farm to table food, with unique combinations of flavor, thus my inner California food snob was blissfully satisfied. Some of my favorites- the panacotta with caramel sauce, pine nuts, and edible flowers, and shrimp papoosa with cheddar and jalapeno, and desert- brown butter ice cream with aerated chicolate! Wine or beer pairing is optional; we quite enjoyed the unique beer selection. The staff is welcoming, dining experience intimate, great for date night . Best restaurant in Austin!"

  • "Fixed price 13 course dinner was very good; good use of interesting ingredients and outstanding plating. I particularly appreciated the use of less commonly served fish (Cobia and tile fish). The beer pairing with the fixed course was also a lot of fun and were very good selections. All that being said, because I came in with absurdly high expectations due to everything I have heard, read, and scene, I left feeling very satisfied, but not blown away."

  • "Finally got into this place, it wasn't worth the wait or the price. The employees were friendly, attentive (sometimes overly). Their friendliness is the only reason I gave this an overall 3 stars. Otherwise I would say it's incredibly overpriced, for ok food. The combinations were not flavorful or memorable. One member of our party took one bite out of each dish and didn't eat anymore. She is not a picky eater either. One of the fish dishes was served only with spoons, but was impossible to cut as it was very tough. Other dishes had undercooked root vegetables, hard and raw tasting. Dishes, silverware and cups are being cleared constantly and the courses come out with such frequency that having an uninterrupted conversation is impossible."

  • "I pat myself on the back after I left Barley Swine. Why? It was the best decision I have made in years! My friend and I were seated at the bar - the interior is adorable - large bar-height tables allow you to sit with others and invite conversations with strangers. The kitchen is open and viewable from most any table you sit at. This was wonderful - I felt included in the cooking/meal experience from first dish to last. The adorable kid photos also added a nice touch. As far as the meal goes, nothing I can say will capture how much I enjoyed every single dish. The meal was a conflict of relishing the lingering flavors in my mouth with the anticipation of what is coming next. Well done! I am proudly promoting y'all to everyone I know!"
