  • Occidental Gem for beer lovers
    OpenTable Diner Since 2013

Since I used to live out near Occidental, I have seen restaurants come and go in this spot. I hope Barley & Hops stays for a long while. That seems likely, as the place was busy with a younger crowd of locals who have obviously been wanting a place like this in the area for some time. (I don't know if I'd call it a "vibrant bar scene", as it is way out in a tiny town in western Sonoma County, but it was busy.) Good pub-style food. My burger was very good, thick, juicy, tasty, with a variety of options. Fish & fries also very popular, as were a variety of shareable plates of appetizers. The selection of beer is incredible, and I tried an excellent bottle from Belgium. It's a great place for beer-lovers, especially.

If you like hippie waitresses that haven't washed their hands in what looks like days, incorrectly taking your order only to eventually bring you mediocre food (at best) in a noisy live-music bar setting, you've found your place. Good beer selection but doesn't make up for the rest of the experience. Wouldn't return or recommend.

As a bar/restaurant that celebrates beer culture, Barley & Hops also holds options for vegetarians and people who avoid gluten. Their selection of "on tap" and bottled beers and ciders is exceptional. If you're going to be near Occidental at meal time, take the time to book a reservation on open table.

Beautiful location, great food and service. Got the table I requested. Prices have gone up a bit, but still pretty good! Nice little bar with good beer selection. I hear they have live music Thurs-Sun and never a cover! I look forward to going back when music is happening. Lots of good pub food to choose from. I have had the Pretzle Chicken w/mashed potato & vegi's twice in a row, so delicious. I must move on to the Fish and Chips, Tri tip sandwich, Mac and Cheese sounds great. Many fish dishes too. Saw the Fish/Chips, they looked really good. The Onion Ring appetizer was great, enough to share with my wife! We love it here, friendly attentive staff. Nice little pub in a beautiful setting to get away and have some good food, drink, & music!

Had a great time at this local, friendly bar in the small town of Occidental. The bartender was very nice and friendky. A terrifc band (Jeff Eads) was playing some good blues. There's no dance floor which is one of my preferences however the scene was so friendly and fun with good food I'll be going back soon.

They're beer menu is great! Nice variety and they have a booklet that explains each beer which was great for a novice like me! The food was great. Real pub style menu, all their dishes went well with the different beers and the staff was really knowledgable.

GREAT beer selection, bottles & on tap, incl Russian River's Pliney the Elder on tap, BIG bonus. The bar area was full & lively when we arrived at 6pm & going strong when we left with large groups of people arriving through the door! Certainly a fun bar atmosphere. Food was decent. It's a gastro-pub so take it for what it is, pub food. We had bbq chicken wings which were tasty. My husband had the short ribs which were less than impressive, but the gravy sauce was great as were his mashed potatoes. I had the three little pigs, (three small pulled pork sliders) with fries. Good though a bit on the greasy side. We enjoyed the experience & will absolutely be back! Not to mention it’s in the eclectic town of Occidental which is always fun!

Great beer list. This is a pub so wine is not the primary beverage here. Many great beers on tap like Death and Taxes. The food here goes good with the beer. Burgers and meat salads, fish and chips. The waitresses are very friendly, attentive and a little West County quirky. If you get there early you can eat in the bar and enjoy the music being played in the tiny corner. The noise from the bar drowns out the music. It's not a quiet place on the weekend nights. This is a dark and cozy place.

Server was nice and prompt and knowledgable.THe variety of beers and ales is outstanding and their little binder descriptions are very helpful. We normally have great food there but the chicken stew was only OK ,kind of bland - needs spicing or herbs added. We set up a reservation and normally give them lots of time (one time WEEKS in advance) but we arrived about 45 minutes after making the reservation. We were admonished by the bartender (even though there were lots of empty tables on a Sunday) to the effect that if we did not reserve 2 hours in advance they might not be able to honor such a reservation in the future.

very disappointing. food was not very good. no one liked their meal. The fish and chips- chips very overdone, not really edible. The fish was very bland, no flavor, just salt. The Three Pigs just did not taste good and the fries were again very over cooked, ? re fied and pretty much inedible. The fish tacos were just OK. Would not order again. The beer was good!

Great beer and a great addition to the Occidental restaurant scene (there are not too many other choices!). We live in the Bay Area and visit my mom in Occidental. We're very glad to have this restaurant to have lunch at. Great burgers and fries. Pretty good fish and chips, too. Salads not bad, either. But--we mostly love the extensive beer selections. Lots of yummy stuff and tastes are happily provided until you have found the beer you're looking for.

Fun local place. Great selection of beer.Over all we had a good time. Reaction to the food was hit and miss. My Chamay pretzel chicken was great, but my wife thought the fish and chips were greasy. We'll go back, probably for apps & beer.

It was Friday night and there was lively music so the waitress was running around a little more than usual. She did a good job.Their extensive selection of ales from around the world is notable. We both tried two different kinds and they were all excellent. The food, though not fancy or expensive, was well prepared and unique.Unfortunately we did not have room for dessert but we did want some.

B and H is amazing- with great, local food and an extensive beer menu. I love the cozy atmosphere and down to earth people who work here. I also like the live music and changing menu options. Food menu offers diverse options with many vegetarian and vegan dishes, as well as great pub fare for those late night hunger pains. The beer list changes frequently, with tones of obscure beers available for the beer geek.
