  • "We brought out of town guests to Barlata for the first time and we all enjoyed our dinner immensely. We love the small plates that enable us to try different dishes. We always order at least one paella. We did a seafood one this time and went for the larger one. It was one of the best ones we've had here. We also tried a different wine than we usually get and it was a great choice, as well. The food is great, fair price, and the waitstaff is enjoyable, friendly, knowledgeable, and courteous. I highly recommend Barlata. One of my favorite restaurants in Austin."

  • "This new restaurant in Austin -- I've now been there three times within two weeks -- is very very welcome to Austin residents, of which I am one. The Spanish (-style) food is excellent -- a nouvelle cuisine verson of a tapas bar and restaurant. The bar is terrific!, as are the opportunities to sit at "community tables" (what a great idea!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!), at bar stools, as well as at tables reserved in advance. I've done all three formats, and they work very well. The concepts of the tapas is excellent--you can eat a little, or a lot, you can share different plates with your friends. The Catalunyan and Mallorca wines were very very good. The noise level is very high near the bar and community tables; if noise bothers you, sit at tables."

  • "Disappointed. No dish was "wow" in taste,... The prices make me say wow. 2 tiny picillo for $10?? I have been in real tapas place and this is nowhere need the quality of food expected. This Is a very expensive Californian knock off that left their prices too a Californian levels. This is Austin, we demand better quality and Texas prices."

  • "We ordered three hot tapas and a wonderful beat salad. The salad was to die for! All of our food, including the crowning gem of black paella, was very salty. Our reservation was taken right on time and the server was very helpful, knowledgeable and gave us great suggestions. The wine was outstanding!"

  • "If you haven't been there, go. Food is very good and very authentic, the place is cool and there is usually a crowd, which makes it nice and lively. Brunch on the weekends is the best. I wish that it would open for lunch, as Spanish food is great for a late, slow, enjoyable lunch with some nice wine... Very recommended...."

  • "We came here for our 18th anniversary. Sat in a booth on the sidelines watching the younger crowd. Lots of communal sitting make for friendly talk and meeting new people. Our waitress, Veronica, lent a Spanish country flair to the modern atmosphere, giving us ideas for tapas choices that would work with what we wanted to try anyway. Also, she made an excellent wine choice for us; Prima. We started with Boquerones with pears and Idiazabal cheese, a delightful light combo with fresh, white anchovies to round out the flavors. Our next two tapas were the Gambas Ajillo (crunchy shrimp crusted with a red chile and garlic, and mussels with sofrito, peas and pancetta. The shrimp were fantastic! Finished with Paella Barlata, also very good."

  • "Though by-the-glass menu has changed, our server was happy to offer tastes of new wines. All (2 reds, one white) were very good. Bringing food out when it's ready makes the meal informal - a good thing when the vegetarian has something to eat too. The owner stopped by after an hour or so to see how things were. (Very good.) A happy experience every time we go - either just the 2 of us, or a place to bring out of town guests. Reservations work here, I don't want it to get TOO popular, but I understand why it would be high on any list."

  • "Despite some of the hype, we found Barlata's food to be somewhat underwhelming. The presentation was generally weak (quail plopped on top of chopped lettuce in almost exactly the same way the lamp was presented. The gambas however, came on a sizzling pan which was excellent and tasty. Over-all, the tapas were uninteresting and poorly presented."

  • "Great atmosphere and great authentic food/tapas - made me feel like I was back in Spain. The owner is a friendly guy and the vibe managed to be both trendy and relaxed at the same time. It's a great place to have lunch or to go for a beer (they have Estrella on tap) while watching a soccer game. We went for the Barcelona/Madrid Clasico and there were lots of international fans which was cool too."

  • "The menu of tapas can be daunting at first, but be rest-assured everything on there is a unique and delicious choice. Highly recommend getting at least one pan of paella to split -- the traditional varieties as well as the more off-beat gamey recipes are all good. The only knock was that the two-person tables are cramped and a little precarious, creating an air of nervousness when there's an open bottle of wine sitting on them."

  • "Barlatas is still on top of their game! Savory food with great seasoning. Patatas are crispy outside & hot & soft inside. Excellent combination! Gambas ajillo are a favorite selection as well. And you can't go wrong with any paella b/c they will customize the ingredients. Can get loud but it's a vibrant energy so all is good. Service is attentive w/o being intrusive. Love to introduce friends to the place."

A varied and interesting spread of tasty dishes ranging from the exotic to the so, so coupled with an extensive wine and liquor list made for an enjoyable evening. Waiting staff were attentive and knowledgeable with a fun ambience one would expect from a popular tapas bar later in late evening Madrid. Make sure one's credit card is primed and up to date because while taste options are flavorful and delectable, portions usually run to a couple of mouthfuls.So, as one's dining companions savor the chef's morsels, remember that at around $3 a tasty spoonful and with wine flowing freely, the bill can reach Michelin 3 star dimensions!"

  • "We went to Barlata Tapas on a Friday night around 7 pm. Granted, it was the beginning of SXSW, so maybe it was busier than normal, but dang...it was crazy and LOUD. Hubs and I could barely hear each other. Plus we were seated at a 2 top table that was in a row of 2 tops, all close to each other. We spent the first 20 minutes being quiet because the two ladies next to us were talking so loudly, and there was zero privacy. After they left, we felt a lot freer to talk. The food was fantastic! We had 3 tapas, some Paella, dessert and 2 glasses of Sangria, and the bill was a reasonable $70. Our waitress was super knowledgeable and helpful on picking tapas. Overall, we really enjoyed the place! I think we will definitely be back."

  • "We were excited about Barleta, having read a glowing review, and so it took a while to tumble to how truly bad this place was. Our waitress seemed knowledgeable, and we followed her recommendations -- octopus with fennel, garlic shrimp, anchovies with pear and sharp cheese, plus lamb kebobs and pigs feet. As I said, we wanted to believe, but literally nothing tasted good. The shrimp was drowning in oil and despite a pile of garlic slices had no discernible garlic flavor. Octopus, anchovies, lamb, same: no flavor. The pigs feet tasted subtly of star anise, but the texture was alarming. Meanwhile, our waitress had disappeared, and no one else seemed to want to take our money, so we had to walk up to the hostess to check out."

  • "6pm reservation was perfect for an early saturday night. Had 3 cold plates and 3 warm plates - not a bad one in the bunch. We were adventuresome and tried all new items - Octopus warm and cold was fabulous. Waiter was very helpful in suggesting what order to eat our selections. Pigs feet was the perfect way to end the evening! Would definitely recommend."

The bar is very well stocked, and the staff are knowledgeable about almost everything they have.   • "Have been before several times for dinner and love the place. This time we decided to try brunch, and it was the best in town to date!! There are still no crowds for brunch, and that is great.. Service was very good, and the meal was amazing. The table had the eggs and chorizo, which are powerful, Spanish and amazing, also the poached eggs, which were perfect... Pancakes fluffy as air, perfect torrijas.... You got to try it!!"

  • "The second visit confirmed the first. This is a spectacular tapas bar. Amazers food. Tasty sangria. Super staff. The tapas plates were every bit as good as the real deal in Spain. The energy and crowd of the place was exciting and fairly loud, but clearly there were lots of people enjoying this place a LOT."
