A word from Barcode
'To those of us who work a few blocks away, the opening of Barcode, in the former Fourth Estate Grille space near 17th and L streets NW, qualifies as big, huge, stop-the-presses news (at least as far as our happy hour options are concerned). Gone is the casual bar-and-grill vibe of the old place; in its place comes LED lighting, brushed steel surfaces, dark-wood paneling, lounge seating and communal banquettes. A set of turntables stand by the front door, as if waiting for a passing DJ to set them in motion. It makes sense to see them, because the bar is run by the DC Hospitality Group, which also oversees Lima and UltraBar.' - Washington Post. Come enjoy an after work drink, stay for dinner and enjoy the scene.

I understand the energy and loudness for Happy Hour and After Hours-- but downtown at lunchtime, it makes sense to have a spot where business lunches can happen. Other than that, I love the place!   • "Good food and environment, but it took 20 minutes after we were seated just for someone to come ask our drink order, then another 20 minutes just for our food order. We had just been outside all day sightseeing and we were very impatient. However, the atmosphere was AMAZING and a fun place to be at. Ideal for bar hopping/drinking and bar foods. The cheeseburger was great!"

I recommend Bar-Code to anyone for great sports viewing as the have several large HD monitors spread across the venue."

  • "My girlfriend and I tried Barcode for a light supper after a tour at the National Geographic Society a block north. We ate quickly, since we weren't interesting in the Latino music and dancing that was supposed to start about 10 PM. The staff was busy removing tables throughout our meal, but we still received friendly and attentive service. I had the beets and spicy shrimp and she the spinach-artichoke dip and grilled artichoke. All were very tasty, with the habanero butter from the shrimp almost too hot to eat. We'll try to get to Barcode earlier on our next visit."

  • "The location is perfect. The waiters kept on asking us if we were ready for the order as if they were trying to get us out of there sooner. Every 1-2 minutes a new waiter would show up asking for the order. And even as we were finishing up they would keep asking us if we wanted them to take our plates away. Food wasn't amazing but wasn't terrible either. Great environment, fun place to be with lunch when catching up with old friends. "

This time was fun and food and drinks were good but Iididn't understand why our waiter gave our table of 5 individual checks and automatically added a TWENTY PERCENT tip to each. We sent them back and had him 're run the checks. We were not happy that he assumed he should get top billing for the tip. This is unacceptable and management should retrain their staff."

  • "I made a reservation and I told the waitress that when I stepped in with 2 of my other friends. She told us to go to the table, it's shared with another group, which was closest to the door and where people walk in and out and I didn't prefer that. Clearly, there were tables down the line where we could sit and so I said again, I made a reservation, could we please sit there instead? and she said she'd check. She came back and didn't give us the seat and said that only 6 ppl could sit there. then I hesitated and said okay, although I made a reservation and clearly there would have been no problem. Five minutes later, I saw that it didn't matter again because there were 3 men who sat in the table I wanted to be seated in. Awful service!"

While the place is not set up for kids, no high chairs or boosters (which is fine given the venue), the staff and our server never made us feel unwelcome. Server was especially great. Food was above par and reasonably priced. I wouldn't call this place kid friendly, which is fine, there are many other choices nearby. But given the location, the volume and energy of the space, i'd recommend this place to parents that want to impress their well behaved 3 year olds."

  • "I kind of expected better from Barcode. I ordered the mahi mahi since the restaurant week menu was extended. The mahi mahi was bland for me. It lacked flavor. The most tasteful item on my plate was the mashed potatoes. I only ate half considering my diet preferences. Needless to say, I was disappointed. When it came time to order a desert, I wanted to order something a bit healthier. I'm sure this would not have put the restaurant out of the way. I was forced to purchase an item I did not eat. I gave it as a gift to a friend. I preferred the yogurt with fruit. The service in general was okay. Nothing to go home and brag about."

(DC restaurants have a tendency to slip in quality.) But, the food is still pretty good! Lots of space, so never have to worry about getting reservations, and good service. It felt good to be back."

  • "I met a friend for lunch and this was our first visit to Barcode. They were still offering the Restaurant Week menu and pricing so I chose a salad, hangar steak and tiramisu. Is was not that busy around noon but it took a while for our server to acknowledge us and take our drink order. The manager came by and asked if we had been helped yet and he took our drink order. The food came quickly and the portions were generous and delicious. I would consider coming back in the summer as they have outdoor couch seating that would be good for happy hour."

  • "I went on a Friday night during Restaurant Week. The restaurant was not crowded at all, but it seemed as if they only had one waitress working. It took her about 20 minutes to come take our order, then about another 30 minutes for the food to come out. We were charged 20% gratuity for a party of 3. The menu says parties of 6 or more, so when I asked her she said it was because of Restaurant Week, I told her that needs to be posted somewhere. I am generally a generous tipper, but the service we received only deserved a 15% tip at most. The food happened to be really good, but I won't go there to eat again."

  • "It was our first time dining out at Barcode. We went there to celebrate my sisters birthday. Nonetheless, the waiter we had was not friendly, helpful with the menu (couldn't recommend what was most popular on the menu), and not attentive to our table. He checked on the customers at the table next to us often, however he would not look over at our table to see if we needed any drink refills or to see how we liked the food. My food (pizza), came back half burnt. Finally I had enough and I had to request to speak with the manager from the host. He came to our table, apologized to us, he made my pizza over (which ended up being delish). The manager took my pizza expense off our bill."

  • "My husband and I are in our early 50's. We went to the Bar Code for a burger based on a blog on the Loews Madison Hotel website. We were the oldest people in the bar. Early 20-somethings. Food was good and service was good. We frequent many bars and restaurants in NYC so are accustomed an active urban atmosphere but this was just too young for us. Shame - but we won't return. I will recommend for my 21 year old son."

  • "This restaurant is great. My only complaint is that it's a bit tight in there. The tables are all pushed together and there isn't much room to move around. That and the fact that you can't have a decent conversation without yelling is the reason why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. I assume the proximity of the tables contributed to the noise level. Definitely not the place to hold a business lunch but perfect for an outing with friends."
