Diner Reviews
  • "As usually, food was consistently good. Sides were great. Wine list really good, and service great."

  • "I've eaten my fair share of steak and without a doubt Barclay Prime is the best. The bone in filet was flavorful and tender. The appetizers and sides were fantastic, as was the coconut cream pie. The service was impeccable. I highly recommend this establishment."

  • "Best Steak I have ever had. Great wine selection. Service was excellent."

  • "Overall a fantastic evening. Completely impressed my client so I thank you. Only when it got busy did I feel that we were a bit forgotten, but it was quickly overlooked when you brought the chocolate truffles."

  • "Barclay Prime was an amazing experience! Food and service was above and beyond our expectation! If you're in the Philadelphia area, and are looking for a fantastic meal, try Barclay Prime!"

  • "We've been to a few of Stephen Starr's restaurants and this one is his best by far. We went to a very expensive, well-reviewed steakhouse in Philadelphia last year for my husband's birthday and there is NO COMPARISON between that and Barclay Prime. Incredible food, attentive service, creative drink list--we tipped 30% and it still didn't feel like enough! For any special occasion or if you just want to splurge on a delicious meal, you'll surely have no regrets. Can't wait to go back!"

  • "Everything was great from start to finish. The food as well as the service."

  • "This restaurant has such a reputation of being a great steakhouse. It fell short of that reputation on our visit. The tuna tartar and oysters were good, but not amazing. The dry aged Ribeye was the best food item of the night. It was very good. The Wagyu New York strip was lacking flavor and was not as tender as it should be. For double the price of the ribeye, you would expect a truly outstanding piece of meat. Unfortunately it wasn't."

  • "By far the best piece of steak I've ever had! 16 oz 28 day dried ny strip is a must!"

  • "If you're a carnivore, this is the place for you. High quality meat, prepared perfectly. Excellent service, good drinks, everything you expect from a top notch steak house and while I'm not a steak house diner ordinarily, this place does it to perfection."

  • "In a historic building near downtown. Fun retro modern décor with brightly sofas and upholstered armchairs for seating at marble tables. Great wine selection. The Alaskan King crab and yellowtail crudo were very tasty, but we have had better lobster bisque (it seemed a little heavy on the white wine). The 28 day dry aged strip steak was phenomenal with a great buttery taste and texture. The staff is very attentive and friendly yet unobtrusive. They even split our steak on separate plates for us without requesting. Their signature desert was amazing for the peanut butter fans at our table and I loved the decadent chocolate cake with molten center. This restaurant is definitely worth visiting."

  • "This is not a stodgy steakhouse ! I wanted to take my husband somewhere he could enjoy a perfectly cooked prime dry aged steak. He was extremely impressed by the beef, and the level of service, which was attentive yet unobtrusive. Our waiter was knowledgeable and courteous. The oysters were divine. He thoroughly enjoyed his NY strip as well as our son who ordered the dry aged rib eye. My veal porterhouse was succulent and cooked to perfection as were all our steaks. We all loved the creamed spinach, I was not a previous fan. We will definitely return."

  • "My family had the waggu filet. They loved it. I had the ribeye. Thick and very tough. Love the atmosphere and sides. Just once again, disappointed with my dinner."

  • "A few of my buddies and I drove from Washington, DC to Philly, just to check out Barclay Prime! The front end staff was great. We got there in advance of our reservation, and were seated at the bar for a few minutes. No problems, yet. Once we were seated, we were "greeted" by our server, Jason. NO CONVERSATION! He just hands us the menus and gives us a beer list. He never mentioned the specials, which we heard described by other patrons. He forgot 2 of our drinks. He rarely checked on us for refills or anything for that matter. We got better service from the bread server (the popovers are great by the way!) Everything about the meal was fantastic. Great steak and sides. Horrible server. I'm not sure that I will go back!"

  • "Had the steak and the $100 Cheesesteak. The steak was out of this world!"

  • "Even though the old restaurant was great, the contemporary look is not bad since it is full of interesting books about arts, antiques, history, etc. that you can even take a look at while sitting next to the shelves. Despite the noise, conversation is possible because the dining room acoustic is good. The lighting is beautiful and just right light-wise. Seats are comfortable. The most important though is what is in your plate, and I have never been disappointed, rather the contrary. You always remember something particularly delicious from your meal."

  • "The fresh baked, warm bread and butter/salt spread was like we were in France. Caesar salad was delicious. We both really enjoyed our prime filet and 18oz rib eye steaks, they were amazing and perfectly cooked! The sides were good, but not mind blowing. Would not have chose the asparagus if I did it again. "

  • "I have to say hands down Barclay prime is the best restaurant I've ever eaten in. The service was impeccable. Food was divine. We had the perfect night celebrating our wedding anniversary!"

  • "I have been dining extensively in Philadelphia over the past three years and this is one of the finest steakhouses in the city. The colossal shrimp was fantastic, the bone in filet was amazing and came sliced and cooked perfectly. The sides were delicious, and the since we couldn't decide between a potato side, the server brought us both, one of which was on the house. Everything about the occasion was great! Highly recommend. "

  • "Took girlfriend for dinner and experience exceeded expectations. Our server, Drew explained the menu and make it easy for us to order. Excellent service and a delightful meal allowed us to enjoy the special occasion. "

  • "Steaks were outstanding, cooked exactly as we requested -- which is not often the case with steak places. Sides dishes were very good. We had the broccoli rabe and the mac & cheese. Wine list was silly-expensive. All bottles were easily triple the retail price so we each had a martini or beer instead. Next time, we check to see if bringing our own bottle (corkage) is an option. Our other complaint is about the chairs -- trendy and cool, yes, but they make conversation difficult. The arms are so wide that they don't allow you to get close enough to one another to feel part of intimate conversation. Nor can you lean back and still feel part of the group. They are just not functional."

  • "My colleague and I were interested in having dinner at a high end restaurant to finish out a successful business trip to the Philadelphia area and Barclay Prime came through with flying colors. No detail in this establishment was overlooked from the classy ambience to the knowledge and attentiveness of the wait staff to the absolutely fantastic food. I had the (bread) popovers, kale salad, filet mignon, and sautéed mushrooms for dinner. What was great is that the bread, salad, and sides were by no means just supporting acts for the entree steak. They were each delicious in their own right and clearly designed and prepared very meticulously. The salad in particularly was handily the best I've ever had. And the filet was cooked perfectly. "

  • "My husband and I went to Barclay Prime for our wedding anniversary. We couldn't make a better choice! Food was great, I got 8 ounce fillet and it was melting in my mouth. They make your meat to the perfection! My husband likes his steak medium without red, just pink, and that's exactly what he got. Dessert was delicious and they even put Happy Anniversary ! on the plate. Also, the pastry chef gave us a present to go , a delicious blueberry cake. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants to eat their steak the way it suppose to be."

  • "Warning: this review might be a little biased just because my date was so great everything was that much better but here goes. I came with a date that's not into red meat so we did seafood dishes. The kind crab was so good but the most memorable and best dish I probably ever had was the Chilean sea bass. I am normally love my steak but because of that experience I will have to think twice and checkout the fish entrees before ordering anywhere now."

  • "My girlfriend and I went late sunday night and could not have found a better meal. Our waiter was perfect, the food even better. Both had 18oz ribeyes cooked perfectly---We are going to be talking about this place for a long time!!! PS the banana dessert-- WOW!!"

  • "We try to dine here at least once a month. Bob, the bartender, is a master mixologist! It's a pleasure to wait for our table and have him make a cocktail. The popovers with salted butter are delicious, as is the kale salad. Oysters are always fresh. I generally alternate between the fish and steak even though this is primarily a steakhouse, correction THE steakhouse. You haven't really had a good steak until you've had one here. I have been to all of them in Philadelphia and South Jersey and there is no comparison. The tater tots are not to be missed! (I don't even like potatoes of any kind so this is saying something!) Whatever you choose, save room for dessert. The banana cake is OMG delicious! Do yourself a favor and dine at BP!"

  • "We celebrated our anniversary. Fabulous from start to finish. Drinks first at the bar- a great experience. Then to our table- cozy and so comfortable. We split a shrimp cocktail-,so large and so fresh. Wedge salad crispy and perfect temperature. Rich bleu cheese dressing. Baked potato- delicious and large enough for 2 of us with some left over for hash browns the next morning! We both had filet- cooked to perfection, tender, juicy & tasty. Maybe best dinner I've ever had- definitely in the top 3. I NEVER box my leftovers- but I could not leave anything behind here and had a top notch breakfast the next day!"

  • "Good for special occasions, because it's expensive! great wait staff. The choosing the steak knife bit is a little hokey. "

  • " B.P. has consistently been among my favorite Phila. "go to" places for a great steak/continental type dinner. Rittenhouse Square location, subdued, quiet atmosphere complements the always excellent food. Wide variety of raw bar, appetizers, salads, steak , seafood and desserts. Nice pre dinner, wine and post dinner drink selections complement the meal nicely. Service generally solid. My only quibble is not receiving the bread (great popovers) for a good 20 minutes post sitting. The waitress seemed to be pullled a bit "thin", and disapppeared for stretches of time. When present, however, she was pleasant and helpful. Overall, not inexpensive, but well worth it. "

  • "All around great restaurant - service, food, ambience. I knew it would be expensive going in, and I have no problem with that sort of thing, but given the price I would probably reserve this place for special occasions as opposed to a regular spot."

  • "We loved the contrast the modern seating (couches and nontraditional chairs) gave what seemed to be a traditional steakhouse. The service was exceptional, and managed/provided by a single waiter rather than an army. Very accommodating in mixing dishes and on-the-fly celebrating my wife's birthday. Drinks and the food were amazing. It's rare that each course is as good as the last and at Barclay, that is exactly what we found. Strong recommendations for the sliders, lobster bisque, filet, and Chilean sea bass. My wife wanted to go back for a second straight night, but we couldn't get a reservation that fit with our schedule. We will certainly be back next time we visit Philadelphia."

  • "Food and service were very good. Chairs were very comfortable but more appropriate for a coffee or lounge table. A little low for a dining table. Tables were close together. Would not recommend for an intimate date. "
