Diner Reviews
  • "I went to Barbone with my girlfriend and another couple. The service was great - the staff definitely knew the menu and could offer advice, and we were very well looked after. We were at an outside table and it was a very charming little outdoor area with trees and soft lighting. The outdoor ambience was probably the biggest highlight for us. The food was very, very good. The five course tasting menu was the perfect amount of food and every dish was great."

  • "great as usual-never disappointing Wish we were able to sit in the garden"

  • "The menu offers so many delicious options...all I can say is GO FOR THE TASTING MENU! Not only do they offer choices - yes! You can select the dishes you want - but the entire table isn't required to eat the same items, so each diner can create a custom tasting menu of his or her choosing. The rest of it - the rustic decor, gruff and uneven service, the lack of reasonably priced wines on the menu - well, Barbone is a work in progress. Go and enjoy!"

  • "We did not like or finish one dish and the chef came out to ask what was wrong. A sign of an observant kitchen"

  • "On at least 5 different instances, the restaurant did not have something that we ordered in stock. They were out of wine and all but 1 type of beer that we wanted to order, completely out of bourbon, and they did not have 3 different items on the menu. The bar was not prepared whatsoever when our group ordered drinks. They were cutting limes individually when we ordered drinks and took them about 15 minutes to prepare 4 drinks. Thank God the food was still great because otherwise, the experience at the restaurant was very very poor. Disappointing."

  • "Got there just as the place opened around 6pm and were the first ones there. We sat in the cozy back patio area where it was wonderfully quiet and civilized. The staff was welcoming and ambiance was very inviting. Food selection, preparation and presentation were excellent. They were timed out perfectly and the wait staff were incredibly well-mannered, knowing just how gentle to be at the table. As the hour or so passed the place become more crowded with family, couples and a modest after-work crowd and naturally, it got a bit noisier. Still as busy as it became there was never any rush to get us out the door and turn the table over. A lovely impromptu conversation upon exit with who turned out to be the owner sealed the deal for my return."

  • "had been meaning to try Barbone for ages and so glad we finally did! we went on a quiet night early in the week so the place wasn't overly crowded. great spot for an intimate dinner or catch up with old friends. service was really lovely and they even brought a surprise dessert having heard us talking about how it was one of our birthdays. the apps were all tasty and the pastas were well balanced. the garganelli with spicy lamb was a standout. will recommend this place and return here. • "We had a really nice time at Barbone. The food was good, the restaurant is cute and the help was friendly and attentive. There is an outside patio for dining that looked really nice, but it was still a little too cold. Would definitely go back in warmer weather and sit outside."

  • "Sorry, but I found the food here to be boring. Portion sizes were decent and service was OK, but with too many good Italian places in the city, I won't be returning."

  • "We had a 8PM reservation - restaurant had several diners, but not busy. We were seated right away at nice window table. Menu was good, but restaurant was out of 3 main courses. Bread was good, but olive oil dip was really very mediocre. We had pepper fettucini and short - again food was good but nothing special."

  • "This restaurant didn't look like much when we walked in - it was 7.30pm, there were a couple of prams there (an immediate romance-killer for me and my wife!) and the place was a bit quiet. However, we were confident the food would offer something and it did. A very nice calamari which was prepared differently from other versions of this staple I've tried in other restaurants, very tasty. The asparagus appetiser was decent. The pasta was very good, well-cooked with a few key flavours which shone through. My wife had the fish, which was very tasty. We weren't offered dessert - not sure if they have any?!"

  • "My husband and I had a wonderful cozy dinner at Barbone. It's a cute little spot that works well for a date or small (4-6) group. Attentive and friendly service. It's laid back and casual and very, very reasonably priced. We decided to try the pasta tasting menu. You could have 5 pastas or 4 pastas and a dessert. Great way to sample several of the pasta dishes. We thought the pastas were fresh, perfectly cooked and flavored just right. This meal really hit the spot - especially on a freezing cold winter night. Great little spot that will recommend and hope to back soon."

  • "The food and wine were excellent, as was the service. My only complaint was the lack of heat. The tables by the door very very cold even though we went at 6pm when there weren't very many people entering. Other than that, the food was cooked to perfection! I'm excited to do their tasting menu next time."

  • "Fabulous find - we booked it late but found a real gem. It was very relaxed and welcoming. Felt just like we were sitting in someone's living room! The service was friendly and prompt. We had two children in our party and they were well looked after. The wine list was varied, if a little expensive. The food was wonderful. The braised octopus and the spinach gnocchi were absolutely wonderful. I would thoroughly recommend this restaurant."

  • "There has not been a single item that I've tried that i didn't like at this restaurant. great food and awesome tasting menu options at reasonable prices. has an awesome little garden in the back where you can eat outdoors when it gets nice out. Must check it out"

  • "Great food. The owner is very personable. I was pleasantly surprised at the level of cooking, because the place has limited ambiance. The wine list can use a little work. I'd definitely go back if I was in the area."

  • "Amateur service, and the plate were of the same caliber. The boar lasagna was unceremoniously service in a pool of lukewarm runny tomato sauce with nothing else. The cheese layer on top arrive congealed. The clam fettucine tasted like dishwater. I really don't get why this place is trending. Sub par in every respect, even if the kitchen was good it would still be a small neighborhood joint, nothing special going on here at all, next."

  • "My husband and I and our two grown sons met for a weeknight dinner before going to a concert. We had a perfect experience at Barbone. The food was delicious. The wait staff was very accommodating by tweeking the menu to fit our request. Everything we ordered was delicious. The wine that was recommended by the restaurant was great as well. It's a great neighborhood spot."

  • "Lively Easr Village setting; good service; friendly maitre d. Unfortunately, all our courses which included 2 apps, 3 pastas, 2 entrees were bland, lacking flavor. Added salt helped."

  • "This is my second visit after a stellar birthday dinner on the previous Saturday. The first meal was delicate, flavorful and superbly prepared. before I write my impressions, please note the first meal was spectacular. One of the better Italian meals I had in NYC in b the last 5 years!!!! My second visit was nice, but it just didn't reach the heights of my first visit. The black "Label "prosciutto" and with a fig compote/preserve was a lovely mix of savory & delicate sweet notes. The mussel app. was fresh, well cooked ,marred by an odd spicy finish. My Duck Lasagna was a touch under seasoned .The Tagliatelle Bolognese was spot on.Anyone can have an off night, so, do not get the wrong impression from this comment.Barbone is a real find!"

  • "I booked it in the morning of the day of with my high school girl friends. Before work I just went through Opentable for any available restaurants with high reviews, and chose Barbone just from the Yelp reviews. But it was successful. It was casual enough to come right after work, not too dressed up. It has an outdoor seating with a roof surrounded by wood fence. I would say, definitely go for the outdoor seating. It's really cute. The pastas were just decent. It wasn't too good, but decent enough to finish and have a great time. The wine list is also short and moderate. It was worth its moderate price. The manager was a bit rude and the waiters were shorthanded, but that's just worth the price you pay."

  • "restaurant has seriously slipped since I was last there. food was only fair and I would not bother to go back since there are so many wonderful restaurants all over alphabet city. I chose this for a special occasion with my family who live in the area and was disappointed"

  • "Our son just moved to an apartment in alphabet city, and we are just starting to explore the restaurants in the area. What a find Barbone was! It was a beautiful night so we were able to sit outside in the garden. The setting was lovely, the food was excellent, and the staff was courteous and well informed. We will definitely return."

  • "the good: empty on a Sunday night - didn't need the reservations i made. Outdoor seating is so nice on a lovely night. The cappacino's and dessert were very good. the bad: We were 7 people and only I enjoyed my dish. I ordered the pasta with clam sauce and it was excellent. Husband said meatballs were just OK nothing special. Two people ordered veal chop listed on the special menu, and they got veal cutlet. The restaurant basically blamed it on a typo. Two people ordered gnocchi and said it was totally soggy. Calamari appetizer- poor. With only 3 tables of people, we still had to ask for our table to be bussed long after it was obvious we were finished eating. we paid $300 for 7 dinners; 6 disapponted people."

  • "I was so happy to have found Barbone this year at the beginning of summer, because I have been able to go back over and over again to sit in the lovely garden in the back. The food is exceptional, and even though my friends and I have our favorites, we all try to have something new each time. We are never disappointed. The food is obviously a high quality, the portions are the perfect size and the menu is quite diverse. The owner is incredibly warm to his guests, and makes you feel like family throughout your meal. The service is great, always on point, and I have never felt rushed at all. My boyfriend and I have gone on numerous occasions for a romantic dinner, but we've also gone back with friends for a fun night out."

  • "After being seated, it took about 15 minutes for the server to take our drink order. The chicken livers, which other reviewers had recommended, vaguely suggested ammonia. The backyard is beautiful, however, and the wine list has a number of delicious, moderately priced bottles and glasses."

  • "we have dined here are on several occasions and NOW find...... *potions have mysteriously morphed into a 'child like' state *wine is RIDICULOUSLY expensive (we live steps from trader joes and realize the true cost) we probably will not return (too many wonderful and fairly priced restaurants in this area) too bad :-("
