A word from Barbette
Named "Best French Restaurant, populist vote" by Mpls St. Paul Magazine (CLICK HERE to see our menus), Barbette has also received "best of's" from local press for its late night dining, desserts, wine list, date spot, music, and, of course, those French fries that accompany the steak frites. We use local and organic ingredients as often as possible, presenting beautiful food in a casual, eclectic, bistro atmosphere.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Wonderful food - we enjoyed the soba noodles, the fondue and especially enjoyed the key lime pie with white chocolate sauce! Excellent selection for vegetarians. Highly recommend."

  • "while our waitress was pleasant and the food was good, this is not a restaurant that compels me to come back. The portions were rather small and the prices were rather large...our dessert of carrot cake was more than generous, had a dense cake and creamy frosting. The fact that our waitress served us caffeinated coffee when we ordered decaf made for a VERY long night for two of us who were awake until nearly 3 AM."

  • "The goat cheese fondue my husband ordered was amazing, and they did their steak-frites well. I really enjoyed the celeriac cold soup. Good spicy mussel broth. Our server forgot to ask me how I wanted my steak; I guess I assumed I didn't get a choice since it was supposed to be a chef's tasting menu and therefore the chef would send things out however the chef wanted...? I'm sure it tasted fine, but I hate undercooked meat, so most of it went home to our dog. The dessert was barely there; usually my favorite part of a meal, it was delicious but hardly worth it. So, we'd go back, but I wouldn't do the prix fixe menu, and we'd get dessert elsewhere. We had an enjoyable evening, and their corkage fee was totally worth it!"

  • "Authentic French feel to food. I go to Paris every year"

  • "This was rated as the "Best French Restaurant" in town. For an 11 year old who loves France, there was little French to be found.l"

  • "Traveled to Minneapolis with several leaders of my organizations and had to find a place on a Monday night. On top of that I am vegan....WOW was my food good and that was the response from everyone at my table. Would definitely return!"

  • "We love Barbette for its mussels and creative entries. As to atmosphere, there was a foul smell that permeated the indoor restaurant. We have never noticed this before. It was enough to make us sit outside, Luckily, it was a beautiful summer afternoon and we got a curbside table. Had it been the middle of winter, we would have had to make other dining plans. Meaning: we would have left, the smell was that offensive. I would be reluctant to take out-of-town guests here."

  • "Reservations were extremely limited on OpenTable but when we got there and for the 1.5 -2 hours that we were there multiple empty tables. Food was forgettable and service was awful. Waitress barely paid attention to us and when it came time to leave, we asked for the check to be split between 2 credit cards. She brought it back and our friend who was once a server always leaves a cash tip (full 20% each time), so he signed the receipt for the exact amount and slipped the cash tip under the receipt. When waitress came back she looked at both receipts and then turned to us and said "Oh, you must have made a mistake...." She then happened to catch sight of the cash under receipt and turned abruptly left. Cannot recommend this place."

  • "I went to Barbette to try out their fixed price 4 course meal on Monday night. It was not my lucky night as none of the four courses were that satisfying. If I had ordered off the menu, my dining experience would have been different. I watched the wait staff brought out beautiful dishes to diners sitting nearby me wishing that I had what they ordered! In particular, the other desserts that were served to the table next to mine, not only looked, but actually smelled heavenly."

  • "The truffled scrambled eggs were exquisite and the lemon blueberry compote was the perfect compliment for our waffle. Our waiter was quite helpful with suggestions. Very glad that we made reservations as brunch became quite crowded as the morning went on. Tables are a little tight, but wasn't a problem until towards the end of the meal when the restaurant really filled in."

  • "The entire meal, which was the grass feed ribeye, was wonderful. Everything on the plate was done perfectly. Service was spectacular. Only negative thing is how close you are sitting to the next table."

  • "I met my friend for lunch. We both tried the veggie hash(not sure if that's what they called it)which was amazing! I wanted to lick the bowl! I made reservations which was wise. They were very busy at 12:30 on a Saturday afternoon. We enjoyed our food served by an attentive yet not hovering waitress. We talked over coffee after the meal and never felt hurried or pressured to leave."

  • "A great atmosphere - trendy vibe. A fun small window allows the diners to catch glimpses of the celebrity chef (Sarah, a semi-finalist on "The Taste" season 2). We ordered a number of items, and all were superb! It is not the kind of place to penny-pinch, but you get what you pay for! Service was great and all of the other diners seemed happy and pleased with life - and isn't that the goal? Thank you Barbette, WE WILL RETURN!"

  • "Went there on a first date and loved every bite from the perfectly concocted salad dressing (what was that, a vinaigrette with a touch of mustard?) covering every bite of fresh arugula, to the flavorful curry vegetables dish and the fresh seasonal fish. And the wine list, oh my! What a huge selection of wines. I braved the ice wine for the first time. I'm not usually into sweet wines, but at a place like this... you just have to GO FOR IT!"

  • "I went for brunch and had to wait over an hour for the meal. I was very disappointed in the service and the waitress was quite nasty the entire service. If it wasn't for the great food I would not go back. I'm hoping it was just an off day."

  • "The oysters were blend. The trout was dry and one of us got lamb chops instead of rack of lamb. We were not impressed. We used to really like the food and service. But not anymore. "

  • "We sought a restaurant in uptown with predictably good food, not too much noise, and a good wine list for a Sunday fun day outing with the girls. Barbette provided l that and more! Along with beautifully prepared and presented meals, the wine list delivered a range of excellent selections. We had a plate of their perfect pomme frites to start - the definition of crisp potato heaven - then grilled to perfection. Vegetables and a great cut of steak Helene. If you are looking for a place where you can carry on a conversation with dear Reid a over excellent food, this is it. "

  • "Went to Cafe Barbette to celebrate a graduation - great service, great food. We came hungry & the wait was a little too long (about an hour) so next time we would defiantly opt for a quick appetizer first as we were starving once the food got there. Recommend for anyone looking for a semi casual dining experience in uptown - would be great for date night, small celebration, birthday dinner, etc."

  • "We took our mom here to celebrate Mother's Day, and all of us enjoyed our meals. I ordered the brisket benedict, which featured perfectly-cooked eggs. My only critique is that the brisket had a large piece of fat I had to trim away. Nice salad greens included with many of the dishes."

  • "This was a great experience. The service was attentive without being intrusive. The food was excellent. The meal was not rushed although Barbette's was quite busy. A wonderful dinner; quite enjoyable. "

  • "I just had the pleasure of dining at Barbette for brunch for the first time. The buckwheat crepe was delightful. The menu is always impressive at Barbette. My family and I split the poutine and it was the best poutine I have ever had! My family had never had poutine before so I was glad that Barbette's was their first poutine experience."

  • "Four of us, had reservation at 6:45 hoping to catch up over dinner, but it was nearly impossible to talkacross table--way too loud!! Something needs to be done about that. Tables were quite jammed in. Waitress a bit inattentive. Steel head trout was delicious-as was strawberry rhubarb dessert. The noise took the edge off of great food. "

  • "The food was OK but I was hoping for more. The trout was really bland- a bit dried out and little flavor. The sides were great. We also enjoyed our salads at the start of our meal. For an over $100 dinner...we were looking for more. Not a very good value in our opinion. It was a fun atmosphere. If we ever go back, would just do drinks and a few small plates. "

  • "some of our food was great, some not so much. The creme brulee - fab! Wine - very good. Mussles - very good. Pork loin, daily special, disappointing, but the sides with it were very good. Service was great. We will go back and try other entrees."

  • "We eat at Barbette often, as we are always pleased with the service and food. We love the location and ambiance. The sound level is just right -- a friendly buzz, but never too loud for conversation. Most important, we are never rushed. "

  • "Wonderful ambiance at this French restaurant. A lively place but not overbearing at all -- and unlike many French places, the table aren't crammed next to each other. The seating arrangements are appealing and varied to accommodate various party sizes. Food-wise, the french fry appetizer was a bit lifeless. The herbed Brie was quite good, though IMO it ought to be accompanied by more balsamic. The trout was artfully presented, and the lobster risotto was excellent. Will definitely return."

  • "I have been to Barbette for brunch and just recently went for dinner. I had made reservations a few weeks early since we were a group of 6, but after a quick walk around Lake of the Isles, we ended up arriving 45 minutes early planning to have a drink at the bar before dinner. Unfortunately the bar was full, but the hostess was able to seat us right away. The staff couldn't have been more welcoming and accommodating, and the food at both brunch and dinner was out of this world. I would highly recommend this for any occasion! "

  • "I drive by here a lot, and now I am kicking myself that I haven't dropped by. Good thing we made reservations for dinner as it seems to fill up quickly. Great variety of menu selections. Cheese plate was delicious. Field green salad was huge. Lobster risotto was outstanding. Fun drink menu. Dessert was the perfect size after a filling meal. Service was exceptional. I will definitely return here. "

  • "This was a magical trip back to my childhood days in Brussels. Specifically the amusement of steamed mussels in white wine, lemon and garlic, was perfectly executed and reminded me of Bruge. The roasted bone marrow was very nicely complimented by the tangy marmalade of shallots. I had the lamb chops cooked to a perfect medium rare with the crunch of the shaved daikon a great contrast to the tender lamb. I loved the English peas as they were large and firm and unmushy. My partner's rainbow trout was firm yet flaky and full of unfishiness. The service was welcoming, cheerful, unobtrusive and very attentive. We loved the atmosphere with a fantastic selection of eclectic art and great buzz of animated conversation without being to loud."
