A word from Barbetta Restaurant
Celebrating its 108th Year, Barbetta is the oldest restaurant in New York still owned by its founding family. Barbetta is also New York's oldest Italian restaurant and the oldest restaurant in the Theater District. This three-fold distinction has earned it landmark status by the Locali Storici d'Italia. In a glittering interior decorated with 18th century Italian antiques Barbetta serves the cuisine of Piemonte, Italy's northwestern most region. In summer, its exuberantly verdant garden with century-old trees and scented with the blooms of wisteria, oleander, jasmine and gardenia make it a most sought-after site for al fresco dining.

Diner Reviews
  • "This place was just fantastic. Very easy to find on the street with the trees out front being nicely lit. It seemed at first walking through the restaurant and seeing a lot of open tables made me second guess my reservation until they took us outside and it was beautiful. Perfect for a date for two"

  • "Positives: Beautiful garden setting in the heart of Times Square. I have been to other restaurants on Restaurant Row and never noticed Barbetta, but so glad I found it. They fall over themselves in providing outstanding service....never intrusive, but attentive, lovely service minded gentlemen who go out of their way to make your visit worth remembering. The parmesan biscuits are to die for! Well worth the price; a lovely experience. Downsides: the menu is crowded and a little confusing. The food comes almost instantaneously; not ideal if you want to have an unhurried or romantic dinner."

  • "With all the glitz and glamour in Manhattan, Barbetta has stood the test of time for over a century still in the hands of its founding family. Its majestic decor and ambiance make you feel like you are dining in an 19th century mansion. But it is not only the decor that makes it. The attentive and genuine service (impeccably dressed staff to boot) and quality food make you feel like a king! Try the espresso granita after dinner..best granita I've ever had! Great for pre-theatre dinner, for a special occassion or romantic night out. Garden was closed due to rain when I went but it looks like its straight out of Italy. Just please be sure to dress like you belong there meaning shirt, tie and jacket. Laziness is not an excuse!!"

  • "My daughter and two granddaughters and I ate at Barbetta before the theater. The food was all wonderful (great risotto) and our truly Italian waiter was charming and helpful. It is a very expensive restaurant, so go for a special occasion."

  • "We were met at the front door and the evening just kept getting better. Great staff and very professional waiters. Food and atmosphere were top notch. They brought out a slice of chocolate mousse for my wife's birthday and all sang to her. It was a great night and a great trip to NYC for us."

  • "Not only wa the food and service excellent, but my wife and I met the co-owner of the NY football Giants, who was also dining there."

  • "It's still one of the best restaurants in Manhattan. The scallop & the crab entres were delicious & perfect for summer outdoor eating. The service was very attentive & courteous. A relaxing place to eat before a show or at any time. In my mind it should require a shirt, jacket & tie similar to 21 Club. It's an elegant treat so why not dress elegantly."

  • "Outdoor space is great especially given this this is Times Square. Very romantic indoor garden but bit stuffy. Food was also great. Upscale. When we arrived (around 10 pm) there was hardly anybody there. Annoying was waiter who told everybody how upscale this place is, husband of owner a noble price winner and friend of Bill Clinton, how organic the food is, how old this is..... I enjoyed the placed but didn't needed the forced information. Also: ordered a Panna Cotta. They came back telling us we had free dessert splitting it but it had not resemblance of a panna cotta. Pudding!! Will most likely not go back. I enjoyed the food, the setting very much but the staff and behavior was not right."

  • "Too expensive for what the restaurant offers. Portions very small, but tasty. Prix fixe definitely not worth $58."

  • "We try to get to Barbetta when we are in the theater district; it is old-world ambiance and service, and the food is quite good."

  • "Based on many visits, I find Barbetta to be one of the very best New York restaurants catering to the theater-going population. It has a superb menu and a staff there to serve."

  • "This wonderfully restored historical building is hidden away right in the center of the theater district. If you are looking for both history and ambiance, this is the place. The dining room is gorgeous giving you the feeling of being in a room at Versailles. The garden is a quiet, delicate spot to share with someone special while surrounded by the magnificence of Manhatten - just look up. Add delicious food and drink and you have perfection! I will continue to visit with those I love."

  • "Old school - very expensive for what you get. Food really just mediocre. Beautiful old building and staff pleasant, but not worth the money."

  • "Too fancy and expensive for a quick pre-theatre dinner. Old world ambiance, but could use a facelift. Food is good but portions are miniscule. Service is excellent."

  • "We were pleasantly surprised. We ate inside and it was very open and light. We liked the atmosphere. The waiter was very attentive and it was nice that he allowed us to order the appetizer pasta for a full course. We had various plates which were delicious. The pesto sauce was incredible and so fresh. We had it on fresh short pasta. The pasta with ragu was also delicious and very generous with the meat. The salmon was excellent. The crespelle was also very tasty. The wine by the glass is expensive but we enjoyed the wine suggested. The waiter comped us a lemon granita which was nice. Our only complaint was that we were over charged by about $40 on the pasta. They corrected but with no apology. Check your bill."

  • "What a great little spot to have a quiet dinner in the garden. I almost felt like I was in Rome as we sat outside and dined on authentic Italian food. The service was great, the food was also very good, but the ambience was amazing. It was so quiet and relaxing. A nice change from the busy street outside!"

  • "Absolutely beautiful setting, inside and outside. Old world feel with old world service not seen much today. Food is predominantly Piedmontese (i.n my opinion, the best food and wine region of Italy), so don't expect Neopolitan fare here. Under same family pride of ownership since 1906. I wonder what will happen to this treasure when Ms. Magliolo can no longer sit at the helm."

  • "A must place to eat when in NYC. Over 100 years old. For the best in Piedmont cuisine and the dessert tray will definitely satisfy your sweet tooth. And most important, the staff, from maitre'd to the bus boy, your dining experience will never be forgotten. A loss to all if you do not eat there."

  • "Have dined at Barbetta quite few times but not since the fire and renovation. When Bullets Over Broadway took us to the area, Barbetta was a natural choice. We had beet salad and finocchio salad--both superb--then veal agnolotti in a light cream sauce--absolutely out of this world! Desserts were also excellent. My one complaint is the rolls we were served. Honestly, they must have been last night's left-overs. They were stone cold and absolutely rubbery. Sorry to have to be at all negative regarding one of my favorite places in Manhattan, but this one item should be remedied, especially since patrons at the next table commented on the rubbery rolls as well."

  • "Barbetta's is a wonderful experience. The food and service was impeccable. The restaurant and outdoor eating area are beautiful. I recommend dressing at least business casual."

  • "We felt like we were in Italy sitting in the magnificent garden. Everything was good, our beet and roasted pepper salad, chicken paillard delicious, wine list very good. The missing link is the tall white haird head waiter who is too old school for today's dining world. He is rude, tells you what you want, doesn't listen and turns everything into the customers problem. When I asked his name he wouldn't tell me and walked away. This guy does not belong in this remarkable setting in the middle of NYC. It was still a perfect setting on a beautiful summer night! I have recommended many times already!"

  • "My family has enjoyed Barbetta so much that we often brave Time Square traffic to dine there when we have no intention of going to one of the theaters. Barbetta seems to me to be what one hopes for on an evening out - great food and wine, impeccable service in beautiful surroundings."

  • "Came across this when looking for a pre-theater restaurant for my daughter and myself. I loved the history of the restaurant. It lived up to expectations. The food and the service were excellent. We dined outside on the patio and it was great. The service was excellent! Very pleased with our choice."

  • "The staff was so welcoming and went out of their way to make my special day even more so! Not a thing was overlooked! The food was exceptional and served in a timely but not rushed manner allowing us ample time to make our theatre plans. All four luncheons were delicious! We came from Maryland and would certainly be regulars if we lived closer!"

  • "After breaking through the Boradway crowds-a welcome dining oasis. Ambience beautiful and staff professional. Wine list also very diverse. Food only so so, but fun to eat a historical NYC restraurant"

  • "The service was great, and so were the decorations and the ambiance. However, the food was completely overpriced and not the greatest Italian food I've had. I'm a vegetarian, and my selections were very limited on what I could order. Portions were very small, and I feel that I didn't get enough food for the amount of money spent. After our Broadway show, we ended up getting slices of pizza because we were still hungry. I also wish we could have had outdoor seating, and that the dinner wasn't so rushed. Service was very accommodating when I asked for a different desert when I didn't like the first one I ordered."

  • "Really good food... But empty after the theater crowd has eaten... We were the ONLY table that remained from 6:30-8..... Next guests did not arrive until 9pm as we were leaving"

  • "Ambience is superb! Garden looked delightful but it was pouring. Very welcoming atmosphere, greeted warmly. Menu choices were somewhat limited. The special, soft shelled crabs were quite good while my dining partner felt his pasta was just ok. There are so many Italian restaurants with better food. But the dining experience and room decor made it a lovely evening."

  • "In the midst of the noise and commotion of Times Square, the idyllic garden of Barbetta represents an unexpected oasis of peace and tranqullity. The beautiful town house, furnished with antique furniture and chandeliers offers the impeccable service of times gone and the amazing food of the Northern Italian region of Piedmont, along with other Italian fare. To make things easy, the menu features in red the typical dishes of Piedmont. My cousins and I sticked to those and were in foodie heaven for a couple of hours: bagna cauda, risotto ai porcini and vitel tonné among our choices and definitely some of the best Italian dishes we've ever had in New York."

  • "I selected this restaurant because of it's historic and romantic setting. "It" lived up to it's name, but our waiter rudely discriminated against us when he learned we were from Kansas. His political references, belligerent comments regarding our conservative values and beliefs, and his continued badgering throughout our dinner ( a celebration of our wedding anniversary) negated the wonderful atmosphere and the excellent food, to include the special dessert served to us for our anniversary. My wife left in tears, as we had spent a good amount of time searching for and securing a reservation at this establishment, with expectations of having a romantic and relaxing dinner. I would never recommend this restaurant to anyone."
