Celebrating its 108th Year, Barbetta is the oldest restaurant in New York still owned by its founding family. Barbetta is also New York's oldest Italian restaurant and the oldest restaurant in the Theater District. This three-fold distinction has earned it landmark status by the Locali Storici d'Italia. In a glittering interior decorated with 18th century Italian antiques Barbetta serves the cuisine of Piemonte, Italy's northwestern most region. In summer, its exuberantly verdant garden with century-old trees and scented with the blooms of wisteria, oleander, jasmine and gardenia make it a most sought-after site for al fresco dining.

  • "We had a 5:45pm reservation to allow time for a relaxed dinner before our 8pm show. The online menu looked great. However, upon seating, we were given a fixed-price pre-theatre menu with very limited options - and pricey. The waiter said the regular menu was not available until 7:30pm. Everything was rushed. Each course served immediately after the prior, with no time to linger - entrees and salad were even served together. Even with dessert and coffee, we were out the door before 7pm, with an hour to kill before our show. Not the leisurely dinner we looked forward to. On the plus side, our waiter was very nice and recommended and served us the house gnocchi, which wasn't on the menu but we wanted pasta (and it was tasty)."

  • "Lovel place for a pre theatre dinner. The Maitre D' was friendly, helpful and charming. He was very helpful in meal selection and talking about the history of the restaurant and the owners. Piano playing made the room feel very romanitic and comfortable. Food was tasty and served very well. Everyone that worked there cared about the level of service. Very nice experience."

We had to seek out staff for drinks, our check and they never brought our salads. For a pre-dinner menu, it would have been nice if there had been a focus on getting us to the theatre on time. Best I can say, food was overall good, but not consistently good and the piano playing was lovely."

  • "What a delightful dinner and wonderful host. We ere given great suggestions for dinner and for dessert. I had the perfectly cooked rack of lamb, and my friend a pacific bass. Appetizer was a vegetarian cannelloni which was outstanding. Dessert a pastachio lime pie."

  • "Barbetta is set in the lower level of a beautiful, old Brownstone. The Matre 'd was friendly & accomodating, the waiter was delightful. The servers & bussers were there to immediatley attend to your needs without hovering. Even though there were other guests, you felt like you were the only one being attended to. Now we get to the food, EXCELLENT! The menu was not bland but did not make you feel challenged in trying to figure out what was offered. Lamb, chicken, beef, fish and, lets not forget, pasta. Your menu choice was cooked to perfection. We are definately returning to this beauty especially later in the season to experience the outdoor patio. A softly lit area with statues, trees, flowers and a fountain. Can't wait!"

But the decor was beautiful, and all the food was delicious. The sommelier and waiter were friendly and helpful with my food allergies and wine preferences. There were 2 small complimentary plates to start including cheese puffs and smoked salmon bites - both very good. The food was delicious. The meal was served at a perfect pace. Not rushed but in time to get us to the theater in time. We will definitely return. Highly recommended ."

  • "Recently in NYC to see show . Made reservations for Barbetta and since a NYC landmark, expected great things from reviews. Disappointed with feeling like being in a "food mill" with a priz fix menu, several tables being served essentially at the same time, waiting for most courses and listening to the head waiter say the same speech to each table within our hearing....very overpriced for quality and service. Expected to be out early to walk around before heading to theatre, but they dragged out our dinner for 2.5 hours. Place is funky and ambiance nice, but don't go on Saturday nite where their mentality is..we have essentially one seating, one menu and like it or leave it. You'll get what you get and when we want to deliver it."

  • "It was a birthday event. 2 people. We were the first ones at the restaurant, 3 hours prior to our 8pm broadway show. We had the price fix preshow menu. I felt there wasn't enough food. My date had the salad( was undressed, just a " faint" hint of dressing. I had the soup, it was ok, not good, not bad. The main meal, the lamb stew, was very tasty. But it was a small portion(appetizer size) and came with no side. I felt like there should of been more food served to me. The bill came to $160 (not including tip) for 2 people and 2 glasses of wine. It was a quiet romantic atmosphere and the food was good. Just wish there was more of it for that price. But it was quiet and romantic. As for the staff: They were attentive ,friendly and polite."

  • "This was our 2nd dinner at Barbetta. We were there 2 years ago. On the first visit, we were seated downstairs and had the personal attention of the owner and the more senior staff. This time we were seated upstairs and clearly got the 2nd string wait staff. The head waiter was a bit cool and aloof, the bus staff was clumsy an obviously in training. We had a much, much better experience the first time. This last experience may scratch them from our list."

  • "We went to Barbetta to keep in an "oldest of the Big Apple" theme. We had theatre tickets to the Realistic Jones at the Lyceum which is one of the oldest theatres on Broadway so we chose Barbetta as one if the oldest restaurants in Manhattan, which happens to be in the theatre district. Great pre-theatre menu options - delicious and appropriately priced. They know how to serve you well and quickly. We loved it. The desserts are out of this world too!"

The menu seemed dated, and maybe that could be the charm, but the food presentation was poor and the taste very average. The decor was not to my taste, but in any case also seemed faded. Sadly this restaurant is a tourist trap."

  • "Love the old-world feel of this restaurant. The ambience is very dated, but it suits this place just fine. Wait staff is very accommodating and helpful, although they can be a bit neglectful when it's busy. They have a set menu if you have a show to go to for a fixed price. Not sure if you get a better deal if you just order off the menu. It helps to dress up a bit although casual attire is accepted you may feel out of place. Make sure you eat the cheese biscuits on your table."

Don't know how long the lady who owns it will continue to run the restaurant, but if you've thought of dining here for a long time, you should seriously consider going sooner rather than later. This place is old-school civilized and quite romantic in the evening. The pricing is reasonable for the quality. The scallops were the best I've ever eaten, and I've had scallops at the best seafood places. The espresso was the most fragrant and delicious ever-and I am very fussy about coffee. They were patient and caring about my friend's dietary restrictions and preferences."

  • "Four of us seventy- somethings had a pre-theater dinner on a Wednesday night at this nostalgic and historic Italian restaurant near the Theater District. We were seated upstairs in a dining area with only five other tables, so we could actually hear each other talk. The service was excellent and we were able to linger over coffee before curtain time. There were lots of roses and some antique Italian furniture for those who love all things Italian. And it's in a historic old mansion - been in the same location for 80 years. It's one of the most gracious dining experiences I have had in New York City."
