A word from Barbes Restaurant
Barbes Restaurant is named after the famous Paris neighborhood at the foot of the Sacre-Coeur, also known as the 'little piece of North Africa'. The Northernmost part of Africa, the Maghreb, is comprised of Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia with cultures captivating with their cuisine, music and decor. Barbes is a melting pot of Parisian and Maghreb cultures and Barbes Restaurant carries that spirit. 'Our restaurant strives to bring the atmosphere of Barbès here in New York. Through our menu and ambiance we aim to immerse our clientele in the unique colors, tastes and sounds of Barbes.'Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Barbes can always be counted on for a tasty meal at a very reasonable price served by attractive and courteous young people. For a starter my friend and I shared a delicious and copious Salade Mediterranee comprised of vegetarian offerings such as eggplant salad, red pepper puree, and hummus. For her main course my friend enjoyed a merguez brochette and I had a chicken and avocado sandwich accompanied by a huge basket of crispy French fries (allumette style) and fresh fruit. My friend and I agreed that Barbes serves real Moroccan food, not a facsimile thereof like some restaurants. My one criticism is that the decor is looking a bit worn and shabby and the restaurant could use some sprucing up."

  • "We were our if town and staying at a hotel nearby. We wanted a place where we could feel like locals and get great food and Barbes was a good choice. It's really small, but I thought that was cool. Moroccan mint tea was really good, hummus excellent, and mussels really good too. We got chicken and fish tangine and it was good too. It's a tight squeeze so be prepared to be in close quarters with other people. Waitstaff was nice, but we noticed our waitress being kind of mean to another server who could hardly understand English. That was a little odd, but everyone was friendly to us!"

  • "I had the Chicken Kabob, not bad and everyone I was with seemed to enjoy the food. The waitress was very good and if she was not around someone else jumped in to help....great service."

  • "The restaurant is cozy (ie tables crowded together) and the service was friendly (seemed like almost everyone who worked there stopped by our table at some point to see if we were enjoying our meal). Some of the food was very good (chicken/lemon tagine, chicken with almonds, lamb special) and some was really just so-so (shrimp tasted like iodine and were overcooked; couscous royale was mostly cabbage and carrots with 2 sausage on top)."

  • "We have eaten at Barbes several times for dinner. The food is always excellent but the noise level is an issue. My husband and I have dinner together but do not invite friends to join us since they complained about the noise. Frankly, it does not bother us. So for a luncheon with girlfriends it is ideal since the noise level was OK and we all had a very good time. The service is gracious and unhurried (the restaurant was full and people were waiting for a table). We spent 2 hours and no one rushed us. It is our one of our favorite restaurants and we will come back."

  • "Went here for a business lunch. The food was decent--rather undersalted and I would have liked more favors to be infused in the dishes (spices, etc). The waitress was a little overeager but clearly new and very sweet. The dishes are hearty and the portions generous. Oh, and the pita and hummus are to die for, the hummus is so creamy! All in all a solid meal and for a business lunch I would probably go back."

  • "Moroccan tagine held lightly spiced lamb, vegetables, and coucous. Superb humus & pita. Wonderful mint tea. Barbes is very popular with every table occupied on a Monday evening. Tables are close together. Solicitous staff."

  • "The good food paired with the cocktails, attentive service and great music really set the tone for this restaurant becoming one of my optimal choices."

  • "Barbes has reliably good renderings of Franco-Moroccan food--not always the most authentic, but everyone will find something very tasty for lunch. Elegant and cozy Moroccan decor and friendly service make this a great place for tete-a-tetes."

  • "Boring food for a North African restaurant. Too bad! If it had been good, u would have become a regular. Handy location."

  • "The food at Barbes is always good but I always find myself annoyed after eating there. You buy an entree that requires a bed of rice/couscous only to find out that it's $5 extra. A soda for $4 but no refills. It's midtown prices without the ambiance."

  • "I have been here before and will come back. I do not live in New York. The Lamb tangine was a little mushy. Next time I will have the lamb meatball tangine again. I was a single diner and they were very nice to me."

  • "Highly recommend Barbes for an enjoyable meal, delicious food and excellent service. The pastilla was fresh, very tasty and extremely satisfying. The shrimp dish with coucous was equally well proportioned and full of flavor. I would definitely return to this establishment. The staff was very attentive without being overbearing."

  • "My friend and I had this restaurant as a back up place. We were so glad that the other restaurant was booked as we would miss out on a great food, super friendly service, and a very nice ambience. Humus was just delish, my couscous superb, and desert was melting in my mouth. I also really enjoyed my Marroccon mint tea. Can't wait to go back."

  • "Very attentive service. I enjoyed the very tender and delicious lamb brochette. My husband enjoyed the couscous and lamb, a dish that we had first many years ago on the Left Bank in Paris. Big chunks of carrot, cabbage, a tasty broth - just wonderful. We lingered over a bottle of wine and then a fragrant mint tea. The only difference between NYC and Paris: they allowed dogs in the restaurant in Paris. Great find.. thanks to Open Table."

  • "Awesome spot to enjoy good Moroccan food with some friends and a glass of wine. Only thing keeping this from 5 stars is that the waiter forgot to box up my leftovers when I asked him (we were in a big group though). Definitely will return!"

  • "While the East 36th St. location may not suggest a pre-theatre venue, Barbed worked out nicely for a Saturday matinee at Broadway house east of Times Square. We had the place to ourselves. And while that can be disconcerting at first, the kind attention we received and sound advice on the Moroccan menu quickly put any hesitation aside. The herrara soup was perfectly spiced. We each had a tangine. I had the kefta and Joce the lamb. Both were super. All in all, an excellent lunch. I wouldn't hesitate to return for dinner when in the neighborhood."

  • "A very good find for this neighborhood. A French/Moroccan cuisine and a very pleasant space. We did not range over the whole menu, but the lunches we had were quite good, with generous portions."

  • "I would definitely recommend this traditional and authentic Moroccan cuisine. The food is excellent from first to last bite. As good for a group as for a romantic outing."

  • "great find around the corner from Morgan Library and Grand Central. Excellent Moroccan menu, the tagine was wonderful (hint: we ordered a chicken tagine and a vegetable couscous and put them together). Had a Moroccan cabernet to go with it, delish. The ambiance is charming, intimate and romantic, and the staff helpful, friendly, delightful. Will be back!"

  • "My wife, daughter, and I had a very pleasant Sunday dinner. Lentil salad and eggplant appetizers were great. Moroccan main dishes were a change of pace. Coucous was so light it almost levitated. Service was good with and extra effort to keep the place warm on one of the coldest nights of the year. We had no trouble having a normal conversation."

  • "A really good menu (sandwiches, soups, something for everyone) in an area without too many other choices (36th and Fifth). And Not Too pricey."

  • "If you have tickets for an evening event at the Morgan Library, this is the perfect spot for dinner. It's less than one block away, with a very nice French/Middle Eastern menu. What's notable about the wine list is its large selection of wines from Morocco and Algeria."

  • "I had lunch with two friends at Barbes earlier this week. This was the second time I had lunch there. The food is very tasty. We shared an arugula salad, merguez brochette platter, chicken tagine (w/preserved lemon and olives), and a side of couscous, followed up by Barbes' "signature dessert" -- layers of film pastry with a sweet milk-based sauce and fresh strawberries. Everything was well prepared and nicely presented. The service was excellent -- they brought us our food in good time, but also graciously left us alone so that we could talk. This was a long overdue catch-up, so we lingered over lunch for a long while. The place was busy, but not so busy that they needed our table -- they let us stay, and refilled our water."

  • "My husband and I had dinner here on a Saturday night. It was quiet but still busy. The service was wonderful, very pleasant and attentive. Our food was also delicious and similar to what we had experienced during our trip to Morocco a year prior. We will return."

  • "It has been a while since my friends and I were here. It was such a comfortable and convenient place to meet. The service is excellent! Upon entering I was helped immediately. Our server was terrific! She was so pleasant. She gave us great recommendations and choices. I selected a dish she highly recommended and it was delicious! The cocktails were even very, very good. We'll be back!"

  • "It’s self-defined a "French Moroccan". The food was delicious but the portions pretty small and every "side" is extra. So if look at it as "French": prices are reasonable. If you look at it as "Moroccan" it’s a bit expensive."

  • "The wine list is notable for interesting bottles at under $40, and a very wide selection under $50. I went with two friends who wanted to enjoy food and drink while we caught up on recent life experiences. We spent about 2.5 hours at the restaurant doing exactly as we planned, so for our purposes, it was perfect."

  • "I only recently learned that Barbes is the sister restaurant of Arabesque. Both our outstanding. The skewered lamb melts in your mouth. The place has a cozy feel. Very inviting. The service is excellent ... the staff are extremely professional and attentive. I highly recommend either of their restaurants."

  • "We found this through Open table and were very pleased with the atmosphere and the waiters ( Gary in particular) were really on the ball and were part of the evening but not intrusive. Noise level was low but only half full at the time we were there . the place is pleasingly small and quaint and decorated to fit the food that is offered . I like a restaurant to play music that also fits the type of decor and food that they serve to complete the experience! They had the "real deal" atmosphere at Barbes!! The mussels were great in the local broth and had a bold , spicy flavor without being over bearing . Not all people have a taste for lamb but if you do the lamb chops were outstanding !!!"
