A word from Barbao
BarBao brings Michael “Bao” Huynh’s’ inspired Vietnamese cuisine to one of the most recognizable restaurant address in New York for Asian cuisine. For 15 years 100 West 82 Street was home to Rain which introduced many New Yorkers to the joys of pan-Asian cookery. Now alongside longtime owners Main Street Restaurant Group, this prolific chef has found a new place to call home, and the diners who have enjoyed his food in the past will have a new restaurant to frequent.

We live in the neighborhood and have gone to Barbao with other friends in the neighborhood, just by ourselves, or with friends visiting NYC. The service and food are great - good wine list...It's become a place we are going to become regulars.

This was our second visit to this restaurant and the food was just as good as the first visit, although I would have preferred sitting in a booth (I asked but the hostess would not let us because we were a party of two, not four). That was the only disappointment of the evening, especially since no one was seated in that booth the whole time we were at a table (for four). Where is the logic?? I ordered the salmon and my husband had the striped bass. Both were delicious. The skewered shrimp appetizer was also very good -- that was a special and I'm glad we got it. A wonderful mix of flavors during the entire meal. Our favorite dessert is that Chocolate Chili Ice Cream. Wow. We rarely order dessert, but this is well worth it.

Went with my husband and 3 young adults (average age 20) for a reservation at 6PM (opening time). We arrived about 10 min early and were told the kitchen had not yet opened--bartender was attentive while we waited. The room is beautiful with unfinished wood on the ceiling; large velvet banquettes, large windows but with romantic lighting in the interior suggestive of candles. Food was good but not exceptional: had the calamari with chili aioli, duck hash with daikon radish, short rib skewers, cuttlefish, lamb lollipops and the duck breast. The miss was the duck hash--the daikon radish was flavorless and had a texture that is associated with tapioca pearls. The hit was the Saigon Needle cocktail.

I ordered several drinks including a wine that was so so and under poured. The waiter asked my guest about her less than half eaten desert, she said that she didn't like it, and the waiter just walked away without trying to remedy the situation. The food was beautifully presented and delicious. I would give it a second chance.

  • We are never disappointed

We are never disappointed at BarBao. Their small plates can construct a wonderful dinner and entrees can be shared as well. You do have to be sure to pace the dishes if you don't want everything to come at once but that can be arranged--or don't order the next dish until the current one/s comes to the table. Their cocktails are outstanding--especially the Saigon Needle--and the wine list, although small, offers some wonderful bottles and by-the-glass choices. And they are not one of those restaurants that puts 2 inches of wine in a glass and thinks this is a fair pour for $12. The bar area is really cool and a great place to get a group together for a drink before heading into the attractive main dining room. Wonderful!

We love Barbao. It is such a special feeling to dine there -- our personal favorite is the parlor-type seating in the back, where you can sit on love seats and eat dinner off of wrought iron low tables. The decor is exotic et soothing, the food unique -- the use of herbs and aromatics is exceptional - and the waitstaff are so good at explaining your options and making suggestions. The other night I went there for my birthday and from the maitre-d to the coatcheck to the waiter to the busboy to the bartender, everyone wished me a happy birthday. LOVE this place.

The food was very satisfying, although neither my fiance or I ordered anything that was going to test the limits of the culinary experience. I had the skirt steak, which I have no trouble recommending, and my fiance had the fish of the day, which was a very well cooked piece of salmon. We both enjoyed the spring roll appetizer, but again, anyone can fry some pork mash and it's only notable if it doesn't taste good. Service was attentive and the ambiance was attractive.

We had been to the bar before and loved it. Still has same great bartenders, but dining room falls short. Small plates interesting and delivered in seconds. Large plates took too long and were very salty. No one ever asked about dinner or if we wanted more drinks. I'll go back, but for small plates at the bar.

Great place to come with friends. Food and music was great. Servings are somewhat small so you might need to order one or twoo of the small o large entrees as an appetizer. We misunderstood the waiter when he explained that and ended up re-ordering in the middle of our meal. But overall we loved it and can't wait to go back.

I thought the space was beautiful, open and softly lit, and the food was delicious (particularly the short rib skewers and salmon, which was so tender). I also appreciated the separation from the busier bar/lounge at the front from the much quieter and more romantic dining area where we sat. As an added bonus, everyone working there was also very good looking.

We shared 2 appetizers and 3 main dishes. all loved lamb lollipops and the skirtsteak and also the noodles with vegatables. My friends were very pleased with my suggestion that we meet at Barbao!! As we were leaving, the place was more crowded and a large group had gathered in the bar.

We basically walked in off the street and were pleasantly surprised. Food was great, service was attentive. We had the loup de mer in a parsnip puree with curry. The tastes went together magnificently. The only thing we weren't crazy about were the pea shoots, pretty bland (side dish). They also have very little in the way of juice, or non-alcoholic options. Cucumber, mint, melon juice options would make this place unbeatable.

Great find. We were a group of 4 & had an excellent meal overall. Love the design and ambience. Good cocktails. Try the China Beach or the Dharma Punk....We brought our own wine and the corkage service could have been a bit better (we waited 15 minutes for an additional glass to be brought to the table). Barbao is a good place for a small group to share a great meal, 4-6 is the ideal number to be comfortable at the tables.

    OpenTable Diner Since 2005

The food ranged from good to very good and the menu offered many enticing options, making it difficult to chose. There was one disappointment, the service - it started off well when the restaurant was about half full, but quickly deteriorated once it reached capacity. They even ran out of wine glasses, or at least that was the excuse I was given after a 20 minute wait for some wine that ultimately failed to appear. That was the start of a bad run for the waiting staff, pity because what had started well turned into a disappointing experience. I'd go back on a quieter night (we went Saturday night) to be able to enjoy the food and ambience (great decor, nicely sized place with a decent bar) without an overstretched wait staff.

An interesting building/interior and a very busy place. We were greeted warmly, and wish our waiter had half as much interest in us. The food was mixed, portions were small. Mostly it was so noisy, that we couldn't carry on a conversation throughout dinner. There are too many other GREAT places in NYC to bother to go back to Barbao.

I hesitate to sing their praises too loudly because the place will get swamped if folks find out how great it is. I've been there several times and the food has been consistently superb, but this was our first Sunday. They have a tastings menu every Sunday of some of the most delectable dishes on the menu, capped off with a make your own Sunday, at an extremely reasonable price. We may go back next Sunday!

The cocktails and appetizers were outstanding. The service was awful. After taking our order, our waiter basically disappeared. Our cocktail glasses sat empty for 20+ minutes without anyone asking us if we wanted another round (we did) or if we wanted to order wine. My wagyu pho was very underseasoned. By the time I got the attention of a busboy/runner to bring salt, and by the time he came back, my noodles were lukewarm and starting to get gummy.
