Diner Reviews
  • "Attentive service. Good food. Ceviche and shrimp tacos were flavorful. Guacamole made to order. Accommodated dietary requests. Inviting interior design. Nice addition and alternative to west suburban restaurant offerings. Hope they are successful. Bonus for moms: changing table in ladies' room stall."

  • "We chose to dine outside - great patio, clean and comfortable! Outstanding service from our server, Hector. He was both knowledgable and attentive. We went with the house recommendations - Chicharon Guacamole with crispy pork was so smooth and tasty; the Tortitas Barbakoas were small bites of mouth watering short rib sliders; and the Baja (fish) and Carne Asada tacos were lovely. Margaritas and mojitos were fabulous. Overall a wonderful dining experience!"

  • "Went to brunch at Barbakoa on Saturday and it was amazing! Some of us did the per person tasting meal, which I HIGHLY recommend and another had the chicken and waffles, which he said was unreal!. The drinks rocked as well and service was great. This will be a new go to place for outstanding Mexican"

  • "Arrived early for reservation wasn't offered to wait at bar maybe because it was such a right squeeze. Bartender was not very attentive but it was a Friday night. once seated our waiter arrived and was ok. Not very helpful on suggestions even after asking if it was our first visit. Food was brought out quickly which overwhelmed the small table. It made you feel rushed. Food was bland. The guacamole with pork skins the skins were stale. The braised short ribs were bland even after dousing in the sauce provided. The pork belly tacos were probably the tastiest. Desert was a miss. The menu idea of up to four items with a per person charge is a good idea. The food just doesn't follow the same path"

  • "The salsas were OK, tacos were excellent. Sangria was good and the super-sweet Pedro Ximenez sherry is a good value at $5. Your bill can add up quickly because so many things cost extra. Very attentive staff."

  • "We have been wanting to try this relatively new restaurant. Brunch was excellent - some unique options, spicy, and great service."

  • "I found the food delicious and the service very accommodating. The wait staff was very attentive. When the queso fundido came out a bit cold, we asked to have it re-heated. The wait staff took it back immediately and it was returned sufficiently warmed. The e types of quacamole are amazing. The most unfortunate part of the evening was the noise level in the restaurant."

  • "The food was very good. Quantity was large. Service made us feel rushed. Had to keep telling to leave things on the table. It was not overly crowded and there was no waiting, but we still felt like they wanted us out of there on a Saturday night. We did the Dos tapas and could not finish, in part because of the rushed feeling but also because of quantity. Waiter was very good, but support people kept coming and taking dishes."

  • "Service was much too slow because not enough servers plus food just took forever to come out. Definitely an 'energetic' restaurant and seemed like a fun place for Sunday brunch but tables are so close together you had to squeeze between them just to follow hostess to your table. I felt like we were right on top of the group table next to us, so didn't make for a very intimate setting for couples like my husband and I."

  • "This is a family style restaurant. The menu is designed for large groups or families. They did adjust for a couple dining together but it was a lot of food. The dishes we chose had good flavor but not too spicy."

  • "Came for Father's day with my family. We were looking to try something new. This restaurant was great. Our server Ricardo was kind and knowledgeable explaining the restaurant's unique style. Each dish was excellent! Something nice in the suburbs that saves the trip downtown."

  • "Food is delicious. Loved the hand made tortillas and the classic margarita is one of the best I've ever had. Only things they would improvement on, it is not very kid friendly, two weeks ago web went there for lunch and there wasn't a changing table anywhere to change my 3 month-old diaper. Also service was a bit slow, husband and I ordered a margarita each, mine came out first and his about 15 minutes later, also did not have the aphrodisiac margarita that I wanted first, even though it was in your menu. Overall delicious food/drinks but service needs a bit of improvement. Finally, thumbs up to the busboys who actually was right on top of things when we needed something."

  • "The evening was wonderful. I enjoyed the food and atmosphere. The only thing I would improve on is the "fishbowl" of sangria was actually a fishbowl. It was bigger than a pitcher and a warning from staff before ordering would have been great. This was a minor setback as the sangria was awesome and the $15 charge for the fishbowl was very reasonable."

  • "we tried the brunch at barbakoa with a groupon and it was awesome. Our food was great. The service was great. I'm excited that I accidentally bought a second one, so we get to go again. We sat in the covered patio area and it was just lovely."

  • "The drinks, food and wait staff are outstanding. The drink menu has a lot to offer and is a great value. They have great non-alcohol options too. The food is all delicious and a good variety. Our waitress was knowledgeable about the food and fun. She made excellent recommendations."

  • "The waiter needs more practice. If items are not available on menu then they should specify that. Why can't people mix and match tacos? Why is this simple concept so difficult."

  • "My first visit was just simply so pleasant. I felt very welcomed the moment I entered. The food was delicious. Thank you to the whole staff for adding a special touch to my birthday week. The visit to my table by the fine general manager was so cool! Thank you so much for the complimentary desserts. I will definitely be back."

  • "Call it Latin, not Mexican, but tortillas and salsa, tacos, and carne asada should not cost this much. Sure, throw in 2 glasses of wine, the short ribs and a ceviche and it all is a lot of food. Tasty too. But our meal came to $40 per person which is just not worth the money."

  • "Absolutely wonderful food. We did the "dos" sampling and not only did we have a wide variety of choices, we were stuffed by the time we left. Service was on point, but not overly friendly. We'll be back for sure."

  • "I give the place a 3 for food. Some items were good and some were not. Parking is terrible there. I give it a 1 for service because of our rude waitress, but everyone else that worked that seemed to be nice. Maybe she was in a bad mood or something but we could tell she didn't like us from the beginning and she definitely contributed to the negative experience. I will not be returning... Oh and she added 20% gratuity after being so rude to us."

  • "Service was horrible. We had a group of 3 people and no one really cared that we were there. The servers just cared about the larger groups. When we got our food our server never came back to see how things were. I am sorry I would never go back."

  • "Our food was delicious and I will go back because of this. The guacamole sampler starter is amazing. This place is large and was pretty empty which was nice for our business lunch but didn't offer much of a vibe, plus I always wonder when a place is that empty. I guess its the suburbs. Music was too loud as well. "

  • "This restaurant has a great menu. The food and drinks are awesome. Plan to share because the portions seem small, so you order more and fill up quickly. It can get expensive going ala carte, so choose the sharing menu. The tortilla soup is amazing! The seafood paella was a little over cooked. "

  • "Food was dry.Food was dry. The atmosphere was lively, but loud. We liked the low lighting, and had heard good things about the food, but our experience didn't hold true to those recommendations. The service was fine. "

  • "Food was good. The place was completely dead on a Saturday night 10pm. Had the mango sangria, which I think was virgin. At least it tasted that way. Menu slightly confusing."

  • "Really enjoy going to this restaurant for the variety of food and awesome drinks. The layout this great, perfect who those who wish to dine more romantic, hang out with a bar scene or enjoy open air dining. However, I was not AT ALL impressed with the late night Friday bar scene at Barbakoa. In one of my many visits I was told that they host a salsa/latin theme on Friday and Saturday nights. So I gathered my friends, had dinner and stuck around for the bar scene. I was extremely disappointed. Not the bar scene I expected at all. "

  • "Way to expensive for the amount of food that you get. One chip for an order of ceviche? Really?"
    Dined on 5/17/2014
  • "Food at Barbakoa is amazing! The tables don't provide the necessary space for serving 4 "tapas" style. Other than that it is such a fun place. Noisy, but in a festive way. Hector, our server, was attentive & gracious. Margarita's are divine! Especially enjoyed the various guacamole choices. And the desserts....mmmmmm! All in all, a great addition to our dining choices. "

  • "This place is perfect for sharing, and even better for a good cocktail. The Spice and Ice is my new favorite, but you can't go wrong with their red sangria. I pretty much come here every weekend! "

  • "it was out first time there and we loved it. our waiter was very helpful in explaining the menu choices. we choose to do the sampling style. we were afraid we would be hungry but our waiter assured us that it was a lot of food. we tried things that a few of us had never had before and we were all really full by the end of the meal. the drinks were really good which is why we had a 2nd round of them. we plan on visiting this place again very soon."

  • "Food was a interesting mix of what I would consider Mexican but in a fancy tapas style. The desert sampler was awesome mix for that little bit of sweet to share for 2 or even 3 to finish the meal. Blackberry-Blood Orange Sangria also very good. Plus the day was perfect after a long winter and the outside patio nice."
