Barbacco is a modern trattoria that reflects the vibrant city life of San Francisco and offers a casual dining experience that delivers exceptional wines, personable service, and high quality food inspired by recipes from all regions of Italy. Barbacco looks sleek and urbane, with a welcoming feel. The 66-seat restaurant is fitted with a rich black marble bar for counter seating complimented by a bright yellow beverage case displaying coolers of wine on one side and the building’s original brick walls on the other. There are also dark grain walnut individual tables and smaller communal tables that can accommodate up to 6 people. The space is full of energy and infused with a convivial atmosphere where guests share tables with friends or new acquaintances. Reservations are welcome, just keep in mind most of our seating capacity is comprised of counter space and shared communal tables. We also save room everyday for smaller walk-in parties. Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "It was a shame that such a delightful meal was spoiled by a rude waiter. We enjoyed several of the vegetable appetizers, most notable was the corn salad and the roasted carrots. Our pasta dishes were also delicious. However, our waiter then made it clear that we should leave, even before we had finished our wine and had dessert."

  • "I just love this place. Great food, and great service!"

  • "We had made a reservation but were still seated at the bar. We asked for a table, there were plenty available and open and in plain site, and apparently we could not be accommodated. If I hadn't made a reservation in advance, I could understand sitting at the bar. We did have a reservation and this made for a cramped and uncomfortable situation. Food was mediocre. I expected more. Shrimp texture was mushy and the beet salad was tiny and under seasoned. We had great service but again, the seating situation put a damper on the night."

  • "Barbacco has become one of our city favorites to revisit. I especially love the old Italian movies they show. Amazing food and great wine list."

  • "Great menu, seasonal and fresh ingredients. Everything was cooked to perfection, however many of the portions are somewhat small..."

  • "Great salumi. Great small plates with a great variety of vegetable plates + seafood plates. Great wine list including Orange wine. Partially oxidized like a sherry. Very busy and energetic."

  • "We came in here with friend from New York and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves from start to finish. The food was never less than very good, the service was excellent (from the host, to the server, to the busers, to the manager) and the ambiance was pleasant. We'll be back!"

  • "Had dinner here recently. Great looking restaurant. Great service. Food was creative and reasonably priced. The place was packed but we could still hear each other. The brown butter short bread with whipped ricotta was amazing!"

  • "Two big older men in suits blocking the hostess station where there was no hostess. "Do they have a reservation?" "No, but they've been waiting." "But, I have a reservation for right now and I'm here." "Wait for the next table. I'm going to seat them first." So, they got the seats at the bar and we got the two seats on the aisle at a shared table with a party of four who weren't happy to have us there. How can you not have a hostess during the lunch rush? A carafe of lukewarm water. No ice. No offer of ice. Busboy hovering to take dishes as I ate my last few bites of food. The meatballs were great."

  • "Great kale salad with ample dressing! Squid appetizer lacked flavor and was a bit rubbery. Izzy fizzy apple fruit drink was disappointing - very similar to your regular apple cider, just another marketing fancy word. Lasagna was tasty but was overpowered with cheese."

  • "Good food & service every time. Reasonable prices, interesting wine list with helpful wait staff. "

  • "The food and wine were excellent, but the service was so-so. While we had a friendly greeting by the hostess, and our waiter was fine, no one came back once the food was served to fill wine or water glasses or to clear plates, and there was not one staff member around when we left 2 hours later, even though the restaurant was still busy. Service could be a bit more attentive, but I would come back for the food. "

  • "$77 for two entrees, two sides and one glass of wine is just too pricey for our budget. The grilled onion side dish was chewy and the entree portion sizes were also less than appropriate. Unfortunately, we cannot recommend this restaurant."

  • "Took co-worker for birthday lunc. The cheese platter was not very good. The toast was so hard, almost chipped front teeth. Told waiter indicated did not eat. He didn't apologize and just tried to say how the toast was done. Nor did he replace. Noise level very loud. Hard time hearing my friends. Maybe good for a much younger crowd. "

  • "Yes, I love their octopus - always tender and always enjoyable. Other things are as well, but this is a staple for me when I go here. The wine list is great but I would like to see more 'by-the-glass' choices or maybe I just need to order the bottle and take the rest home! But I digress...the food is sharable or not and the service is stellar with a staff that knows the menu without looking at it. I've said tons of times that I will take excellent service over excellent food every time, but at Barbacco I don't have to choose! Thanks again for a great evening..."

  • "I had heard the Sicilian meatballs at Barbacco were amazing. I pretty much thought meatballs to be a fairly pedestrian meal until I tried these. They are available with pasta, or "just meatballs" as one would have in Sicily. I decided to be Sicilian for the evening and went pasta-less. I now have a new addiction. Order them with an appetizer, bread and a vegetable side. And a glass of red wine of course."

  • "Delicious plates with well balanced flavors. For example, the Brussels Sprouts were enhanced not overwhelmed by the duck fat. Great for sharing. Jee, our waiter, flawlessly took care of us; so, you can go there knowing you are in good hands for the whole evening. "

  • "i've gone twice and would go again. delicious food, good energy. can get a bit noisy however"

  • "We loved the burrata salad here and the curried carrot soup. The Hamachi was good. too. Our server really talked up the lasagne and yet, it was not great by any means. She also recommended the brussel sprouts, which were nicely roasted but topped off with too much vinegar. We probably wouldn't go back here since they don't have a bar and some of the dishes were disappointing."

  • "The noise level was a bit loud for a lunch conversation. The pork sandwich was not impressive, rather flavorless. The service was both friendly and efficient. "

  • "Barbacco has been on my list of To Do's "Again" because I just had to have my BF try the incredible meatballs! I was pleased to find a reasonable reservation time last minute on my anniversary Saturday evening. I have been here a couple of times, and have been raving about the meatballs to my boyfriend and they did not let me down. If the option was available, he would have "kept them coming!" :-) The arugula and radicchio salad is one so simple and the flavors are delicious. If there was one thing I would have preferred, seeing that this was an anniversary dinner would have been to have a table setting as opposed to having been seated at the bar. Although they explain when making a reservation, I was still hoping for a sit down table. "

  • "The food here was delicious and reasonably priced. Pasta dishes were generous and filling, salads a little small but very good. The service was workman-like -- nothing fancy or particularly friendly, but they got the job done. I think it's a very good value for the price and the quality of the food, especially in that neighborhood. But go somewhere else for a really special occasion or if you want service that goes above and beyond. "

  • "The dinner was excellent and exquisite. The host who assisted us to our seats either hated us, is fed up with life or simply wants to carry an air of attitude. Either way, it was not the greatest beginning to a wonderful dining experience. "

  • "Barbacco continues to be one of my favorites places downtown. The quality of food, the service (Alex, Leona, and Lindsay are top notch!), and the wine are stellar. For red wine, go for the San Lazzaro. I always have the mussels which are prepared in a chorizo red spicy sauce...the best in the city!"

  • "Service was friendly, but food wasn't up to my last visit. Brussels sprout order was skimpy, with very few solid sprouts. Pasta dish was a bit runny in the bottom of the dish, the sauce not as thick as it should have been. It was heated to the point it almost seemed microwaved. Kale salad was quite good. Noise level at tables for two almost intolerable."

  • "Interesting offerings not over priced. Could have had a wider variety of pasta selections - it is an Italian food based menu. Good, solid, certainly a downtown area option."

  • "Food was excellent. Waiter not so much. could not really understand him. No offense but having someone who is Hispanic who barely speaks English isn't what you should get at a Italian restaurant"

  • "This place is a great "neighborhood gem" nested int he FiDi. IF you are looking for a place without an overly corporate feel, this is the place! This is not THE BEST Italian place I have ever eaten at...but it is really close. More like 4 1/2 stars."

  • "The restaurant is located in the side of financial district, and it provide a very well-suited atmosphere for couples to dwell. The food was alright-- perhaps I'm not a huge aficionado of Italian food (although many others rave this place), but I think it's a very pleasant place to bring a date. "

  • "Just a few steps from our hotel, a venue where you can either sit at the bar or join a communal table. We chose the latter and found ourselves on a table with two couples sharing date night. So we were pretty much left to ourselves which suited us fine. Great appetisers and then onto the mains - lasagne for my wife and lemon chicken for me, with Brussels fried in duck fat (had to be done). Chose a mezzo of local Sauvignon Blanc and enjoyed our desserts. Noisy but well worth a visit!"

  • "We had reservations and were seated right away. The service was excellent and we were never left needing a thing. We all ordered different dishes (lasagna, paccheri and a chicken dish as well as the minestrone soup) and ALL were amazingly delicious!"

  • "Entire staff was attentive and friendly. Sat at the 'bar' and got to watch one of the chefs work, which was great. Loved the cheeses, bruschetta and dessert. We had pastas for dinner that I would have enjoyed more if it weren't so overly spicy (I'm a spice wimp). Would definitely go back!"

  • "I have gone to Barbacco on multiple occasions-- after late work night for snack and drink, for dinner-- etc. It is always fun and always a total pleasure, good food, good service, great ambiance"

  • "We are local people and enjoy being able to traverse the small terrain between our SOMA home and barbacco. We went there quite a few times in 2011 - 2012 hoping they would get the kinks out. The bottom line is that everything is way too salt infused. I don't know if it is a case of chefs having thier palates blown out, or just some sort of misplaced insecurity. We took the leftovers home so we could dilute the oppressive saline with something more innocuous. I cannot believe you have not heard this criticism before. We will not be back, amd that makes me sad."

  • "As long as you don't mind sharing tables this is a great lunch place. Food is delicious and lots of options. A bit noisy but typical for lunch in FIDI"

  • "My wife and I are dinner here after a recommendation from a person we met up in NAPA. The food was very good. We were placed on a community table which was fine. We had some nice pasta dishes & some fine wine! The server was very good and I would definitely go back."
