A word from Bar Tartine
Known for dishes that evoke distant places and a cooking style that draws on slow, subtle, and labor-intensive techniques, Executive Chef Nicolaus Balla has a decidedly global culinary approach.

Balla employs his research into artisan techniques such as sausage preparation, cheese making, pickling and preserving to produce those authentic homemade flavors. His preference is for approachable and full-flavored dishes – what he calls “good social food.” The menu pairs naturally with Tartine’s bread by renown baker Chad Robertson, which serves both as inspiration and accompaniment for many of the dishes.

Diner Reviews
  • "This has been on of our favorite restaurants in the Bay & we are the pickiest. Sadly, the last two times, the service has declined. This week, we were seated and no one came over for a long time. Finally someone came w/ water and I asked if she was our server. She wasn't, but said they work together so she can help. We put in drinks and a couple of small plates to start and would be offering the rest shortly. No one came back again for a long time to ask for our order. I saw that same server again and mentioned we never saw ours. She said she told him she had "taken care" of us. I said we had been ready to order--she took the order. Then we waited so long for the check, even w/our cards out , that I had to walk our cards to the hostess."

  • "Took my wife there for her birthday. Didn't know what to expect, just that is was one of the top 100. Was surprised to find that it was a small plate paradise. Not overwhelming in the number of options but enough to have to make some hard choices. Loved the lobster mushroom fondue. Not sure if there was lobster in it or if lobster was a type of mushroom. It was just yummy. Try the roasted eggplant thing. We also ordered the lard spread for the bread; which, was pretty good but wouldn't order it again. The bread was really good. Couldn't pass up ordering lard. I guess I should have known but Bar Tartine is wine and beer only."

  • "Unfortunately not a favorite. The menu is a little weird and some dishes were not fully cooked and some watery."

  • "I thought that with all the hype that Bar Tartine would be overrate. Not so! The atmosphere is comfortable with an earthy almost rustic feel. The service was friendly, helpful and most of all, astute. The dishes were truly innovative, and looked and tasted much better than the menu descriptions would have you expect. Oddly enough, my only criticism was of dessert - we had "steamed carrot cake". I appreciated the new twist on a classic, but for my taste (and my companion's), it was a miss - lacking in both flavor and sweetness. Odd considering how renowned their bakery is. That said, I would go back to try more dishes and desserts and would recommend Bar Tartine to friends - both locals and out of towners."

  • " the service was friendly but sporadic. the food came out of order and we never got the bread we ordered which a highlight at this restaurant."

  • "All the food we ate was delicious. Many of the dishes revolve around fresh produce with delicious housemade sauces. Housemade kefir? This is something I have to learn! The pickled mushrooms had the perfect balance of flavors and texture and the kale was the best I've ever eaten. Really, I wish I lived closer so I could eat here more often. Hands down the leader in San Franciscan cuisine."

  • "It took me a month to get a saturday night reservation and invited a few close friends . I have eaten there before and was a walk in and sat at the bar The main cource as were my friends with theirs .I had the trout as an entree and came in a small salad format , cold and when questioned the staff was redirected to the menu which yes at the very bottom indicated in small print a cold plate but couldnt this have been maybe mentioned to us ,Who reads small print when out at dinner and during conversation.I love trying new resturaunts and espeically in this city but in general found the wait service slow and portions small and bland , dissappointed"

  • "Awesome dinner here. Chef is a master at both flavors and plate presentation. Colors in everything were awesome. Lentil croquettes and Halibut dishes were by far our favorites."

  • "I capped off a visit to SF with a dinner at Bar Tartine and was fortunate to try the smoked potatoes with black garlic and the charred tomatoes. Both were excellent dishes and made me crave for more! I would highly recommend these with a bottle of wine from there extensive selection. Our server was professional and friendly and did a great job of taking care of us. I would definitely return again."

  • "Or trying too hard. Of the four dishes we tried, only one was even close to what we hoped for. The combination of flavors was strange, portions small for the price and too many sprouts & seeds. Maybe we hit an off day? Even the desserts did not appeal. They bake their own bread which was lovely. Service was excellent.Wine list interesting. Really like the ambience. We will try other "foodie" restaurants before we circle back"

  • "Yes, I appreciate the artistry and love of food that goes into this place. But $9 for 5 little potatoes? $15 for what amounts to an open faced avocado and egg sandwich? It's...just so insane. The kind of insane you can only get away with in a wealthy city full of people who don't cook for themselves. So. Tasty, but probably the poorest bang for buck of any restaurant in SF."

  • "Nothing stood out. Combination of ingredients- very questionable."

  • "The food was unique and so tasty. I'm not sure why all the hype, though, with the bread. Seemed like just run of the mill bread to me, except that you had to pay for it. Oh, and also have to pay for butter or oil as well. We ordered bread and thought we would wait to order until that came until the waitress informed us that they won't bring you bread until you ordered. We found that a little irritating. The waitress suggested 2-3 dishes per person. We only ordered four for the two of us and it felt like way too much. The dishes are not small plates. Otherwise it was very good and we would recommend it to our friends."

  • "Portions are extremely small for the price. Said otherwise, very expensive for very little food."

  • "I had been looking forward to the meal for a year and was afraid of serious let down. Bar Tartine did not disappoint! Food was awesome, service even better. At the end of our meal the server sent us home with bread for the next morning! Looking forward to our next trip so we can go back!!"

  • "The meal was exceptional and the service was mediocre. We were shocked that of the 4-5 people serving us, only 2 were friendly. 2 were quite gruff and the other one ignored us. It was never clear who our server was and we had to get up 2-3 times to ask for a menu, inquire on a main course, or request (and correct) the check. The staff, including one manager, seemed annoyed whenever we would ask for something, instead of apologetic. We loved the food and were impressed with the inventive flavors and creative combinations. I'd recommend returning, especially for the cardamom dessert but if I were ever treated like that again, I would never go back, no matter how good the food."

  • "Wanted to try something new and we had read about this place before so gave it a try. Great decision. Had the assorted pickle plate and the assorted mere plate. Both were great. The best dish was the warm chicken salad with summer vegetables. The bread was excellent too."

  • "Great vibe, hot spot in Mission district, excellent service ! Food did not live up to our expectations, somewhat disappointing, will not come back again!"

  • "From sunflower tahina to pickled radishes, from eggplant to beef tartar, the food was as interesting as it was tasty. Non-alcohol beverages were complex and delicious. Desserts are described as a savory transition to the end of the meal, and the description is accurate. Great meal and good service."

  • "Food was good, albeit rich. For a San Fran restaurant, Bar Tartine is notably missing a good selection of California wines on the menu, which was disappointing. Also, the service was too casual and staff were not attentive to basic things (e.g., filling water carafes, clearing plates)."
    Dined on 6/24/2014
  • "Unusual but delicious small plates. Seasonings and flavors worked very well adding interest without being heavy or overbearing. The small plates were large enough to easily share. The music, however, didn't fit the dining. It was intrusive. It was the only thing that I didn't like about the restaurant."
    Dined on 6/23/2014
  • "The menu reads a little scary, but everything we ordered was bright, fresh and delicious. We did not leave bloated and salty, but feeling great and satisfied. Some portions could be a bit bigger, but otherwise we were very happy with the food."
    Dined on 6/22/2014
  • "Other than the pickled mushrooms, which were delicious - everything we ordered for brunch (about 75% of the menu) was over flavored or under flavored. After paying a lot for my meal/drinks - I left very hungry and feeling gross. My plate and bowl were heavily chipped. and both water glasses had a strong chemical odor from the dishwasher. I never complain, but definitely skip the restaurant and get yourself some bread and pastries from their bakery."

  • "We've been in SF for 2 years now and have eaten at some of the cities highest rated spots. This is definitely up there as one of the best meals to date. You have to try the fondue, potatoes with black garlic and Kafir Pount Cake. Amazing."

  • "Incredible experience. The food was so special, interesting, and absolutely delicious. One of the best, if not the best, dining experiences I have ever had. My husband and I left practically speechless."

  • "Finally made it to Bar Tartine and what a gem. We tasted a good portion of the menu as we had a party of four. Innovative and really fresh seasonal ingredients leave you satisfied but not bursting at the seams. King salmon with peas and mint devine ,also the rainbow trout. Beet and spring onion in buttermilk , and kale with sunflower tahini, rye and yoghurt really good.Service was friendly and helpful. Small but very interesting wine list. Favorite dessert was Kefir pound cake, and rice cookie elderflower custard. Would love to see Tartines delicious baking in a few more gluten free choices especially a bread that could be eaten with the delicious celery root spread! Loved the ambiance of the room and will definitely return."

  • "We loved the fermentation element; the long beans and mushrooms in particular. The portion sizes and presentation were perfect, allowing the 3 of us to share. I knew the meal would be delicious (I know someone on the inside), and thought the menu was perfectly written but my dinner mates were skeptical; they thought the menu barely hinted at the wonderfully different and flavorful meal that they ended up with. Excellent!"

  • "This was my first visit and the menu looks very interesting. In one visit, I managed to try only 3 of the small plates, so will have to go back to try some of the others. I especially enjoyed the Chicken and farmer’s cheese melt with kale and mushrooms. That dish was topnotch! Although there are very few fried things that I don't care for, the potato flatbread just doesn't appeal. And the smokey potatoes have to be the first potatoes that did not appeal to me. The smokey flavor was created by a thick, sweet barbeque sauce. Those last two I will not try again."

  • "All round great experience! the recommendations from our server were very good and plentiful. It took awhile to get served at first but that was the only hiccup in the experience. Would definitely go back!"
    Dined on 6/14/2014
  • "The music was amazing (which is not something I ever think about but it was just that amazing) and the food was also fantastic. I'm not usually a potato fan but the black garlic potatoes were phenomenal. The service was excellent, the bread of course was delicious, and everything else was amazing, too. There are a lot of yogurt dishes (which I like) but I was surprised at first. The beef tartare would be better with less red pepper yogurt as it almost eclipsed the flavor."

  • "I was very disappointed with the service at Bar Tartine. The server, Nolan, was not attentive at all, never came by to see how we were doing, took ten minutes to bring us our dessert menu. He would sneak by to glance at the table and not say anything to us. Another server took our second drink order and they never appeared. Yet another server took our coffee order and Nolan had the audacity to plop down our bill shortly after our coffees were brought! We were done in less than an hour and felt rushed and unwanted. The food was great but the experience was thoroughly ruined by a very rude and inadequate server, shame."

  • "I have been trying to get here for years and after I finally found the unmarked gem, I am happy to report that my expectations were met. the menu was unique and very pleasing. We had a baby with us (last min addition) and the host was very accommodating / even sat us next to a window for extra room. Great experience!"

  • "The weekend brunch menu is limited but executed well. The yogurt with fruit balanced fruit, crunch and tartness. I was disappointed that there were no Bloody Mary's and the iced tea was, well, horrible."

  • "Bar Tartine boasts an inventive menu that challenges the imagination and palate. We loved the creative dishes and pairing them with one another. Dinner was an adventure, and if you're a bread eater, don't miss the fabulous and famous Tartine bread that is offered on the menu."

  • "People who dislike food probably don't have a thorough understanding of it or perhaps the food itself just isn't good. These were feelings my peers and I shared during our evening. While some of the dishes were homeruns, a few failed to make it past the infield. Must Gets: Smoked Potatoes wBlack Garlic / Kale wSunflower Tahini, Rye &Yoghurt / Porcini Mushrooms, Turnips & Buttermilk / ANY Bread &Butter / Kefir Pound Cake &Ice Cream wBee Pollen / Cauliflower Salad (perhaps the best item all night) / Halibut wPeas *Mint (omit the mint, it overpowered the fish) Avoid: Beef Tartare wCharred Onion &Paprika (fennel seed heavy, the cracker with it was great) / Sesame Custard wBrown Butter (texture of flourless cake, but flavor of bitter sesame)"

  • "I fell in love with Bar Tartine when I tried the kale. My friend who I went with usually don't like kale but enjoyed the Tartine kale — so in short please try the kale! Their bread is also amazing (fresh from Tartine Bakery), and is hands down the best bread I've ever had. I also had a cucumber dessert, which I don't know if it's still on the menu but that was scrumptious. The decor/environment is pretty cozy, with really nice wood textures and photogenic window light, although tables are a little uncomfortably close sometimes and it's pretty easy to overhear all sorts of conversations. That wasn't too bothersome though. The only complaint I really had was that the napkins were incredibly linty."

  • "Food was so delicious and decadent! Coffee was good too, a fantastic place for brunch. Ambiance was calm. Trendy decorations. Might not come back because the food was very expensive. Not a place for a cheap meal and simple plate."

  • "I found the food quite disappointing and several dishes in the overpriced tasting menu were inedible, including the dessert which we all took half a bite of and stopped eating. We also had 3 different wait staff who were not coordinated and forgot that we were doing the tasting menu halfway through service. "

  • "Easily the most innovative dining experience we've had in a while, and we're foodies from Philly. This kitchen is doing something, trying something, different - and it totally works. Great staff, great (sometimes surprising) wine/cocktail selections. Go. "

  • "Came here for birthday, service was great, food was innovative and delicious. Main recommendation, COME HUNGRY if you are getting the tasting menu. Dishes are flavor intensive and rich, so I'd go for a la carte instead of full tasting menu if you are not too hungry or want a light feel after dinner. Desserts were disappointing (some may like the unconventional type), but after having pastries/sweets from Tartine bakery, I was expecting a world class dessert."
