A word from Bar Tartine
Known for dishes that evoke distant places and a cooking style that draws on slow, subtle, and labor-intensive techniques, Executive Chef Nicolaus Balla has a decidedly global culinary approach.

Balla employs his research into artisan techniques such as sausage preparation, cheese making, pickling and preserving to produce those authentic homemade flavors. His preference is for approachable and full-flavored dishes – what he calls “good social food.” The menu pairs naturally with Tartine’s bread by renown baker Chad Robertson, which serves both as inspiration and accompaniment for many of the dishes.

I had my 4th meal Friday night. Top notch service, interesting beer selection. I like that the chef has a unique voice, unlike many of the new hot spots in town which all seem to serve variations of the same meal. Service is definitely better than the average restaurant in the same category from the bar staff to the servers. Atmosphere is relaxed. Great place to have dinner any night of the week and come home happy and satisfied.

Sourdough Bread that is an appetizer for $ and butter is extra $. Ludicrous. Cobb salad good organic California ingredients we shared and shared an entree w a few small cubes of roasted salmon and veggies. It was late we were hungry from out of town and knew no where else to leave this restaurant.

It is in vogue these days for restaurants to provide lists of ingredients on the menu, sans description of preparation or composition. Bar Tartine does this, and it is a pretentious and confusing mess. Without menu headers, the diner must decipher whether the item in question is a starter, a soup, an entrée, etc. Rather than "eggplant and feta with rye," it would be helpful to state that this is, for example, a dip where all items are incorporated. Don't count on the server to help. She is likely cooler than you, and cannot comprehend your confusion. Further, the kitchen knows better than you the order in which your food should be served, so don't try to orchestrate your own sequence of items. Plus: delicious roasted potatoes.

Of the 4 dishes I tried, 2 were great and 2 were not. The flatbread with beef tartare was spectacular but the kale dish with sour yogurt was weird. The poached peach desert was terrific but I could not eat the stuffed date desert because the taste (over sweet dates with a sour sauce) was bizarre overall and not cohesive for me. Like most SF restaurants, I did not care for the fact that I was given a table stuck to a pillar because I was there by myself. Not sure why restaurants feel single people need to be confined to a corner! Good ambience, no crazy noise levels and prompt service. Overall a good place, as long as one is up for an experiment when it comes to the food.

My husband and I dined here on our anniversary. It's close to where we live and we had read of its excellence. Our first interaction with the hostess was less than warm--an unfortunate way to start, particularly when it's your special occasion. She proceeded to tell us how small the portions are and that we should order 3-4 per person. Upon hearing that, we upped # of items we ordered. Food comes quickly (usually great, unless you're trying to take your time)& is made to order. Must haves: Tartine sourdough& cultured butter, rainbow trout, lobster mushroom salad with cheese, kale with tahini & kiefer. We ordered more than was necessary (hostess's rec) and would omit beef tartar next time. Food outstanding. Portions definitely not skimpy.

Phenomenal food - creative, extremely flavorful and inventive but not snobby! Very accommodating and down to earth service . We were running late and called, they saved our table, accommodated a stroller and were totally low key about it! I also requested a dairy free dinner and they were remarkable with that as well. This is what a great SF restaurant should be like, in my opinion. Looking forward to going back.

This place had character and most of all, excellent, personalized service. The wait staff went above and beyond their scope of duty to explain everything to you in specific detail and this made the meal so much more special. The food was different and yet not unappetizing and even my most carnivorous friends were stimulated enough to try all the vegetarian dishes. Good was sensational. A real treat to the senses, I especially love the amount of sauce that many of the dishes came with, allowing you to use to break to soak up the Flavours and unique tastes of each dish. I very highly recommend this restaurant. It was a memorable experience. Try it! You will not be disappointed!

We have enjoyed every meal we've ever had at Bar Tartine but this was the first time we tried their tasting menu and it is absolutely the way to go. Save two dishes that were "merely" good, every other dish was superb. We went with another couple, so note that all four of you have to agree to go with the tasting menu. We also did the wine pairing which was the perfect final touch to an altogether thoroughly enjoyable evening.

This has been on of our favorite restaurants in the Bay & we are the pickiest. Sadly, the last two times, the service has declined. This week, we were seated and no one came over for a long time. Finally someone came w/ water and I asked if she was our server. She wasn't, but said they work together so she can help. We put in drinks and a couple of small plates to start and would be offering the rest shortly. No one came back again for a long time to ask for our order. I saw that same server again and mentioned we never saw ours. She said she told him she had "taken care" of us. I said we had been ready to order--she took the order. Then we waited so long for the check, even w/our cards out , that I had to walk our cards to the hostess.

Bar Tartine dishes were unique but nothing that I need to eat again - especially given the price. I am not a stranger to paying for a good meal from a quality kitchen. I like the fact that in the Bay Area quantity does not equal quality. However, Bar Tartine has taken both to the extreme. You pay for the butter and there is not enough for 2 slice of bread. We were told that we could share the beet/chickpea dish among the four of us; there was only enough for two to have a satisfying bite. Finally the "main" dishes of salmon and cod, while tasty, were very small - the size of a piece of sushi - and certainly not distinctive enough either pay the high prize or come for a return visit.

Took my wife there for her birthday. Didn't know what to expect, just that is was one of the top 100. Was surprised to find that it was a small plate paradise. Not overwhelming in the number of options but enough to have to make some hard choices. Loved the lobster mushroom fondue. Not sure if there was lobster in it or if lobster was a type of mushroom. It was just yummy. Try the roasted eggplant thing. We also ordered the lard spread for the bread; which, was pretty good but wouldn't order it again. The bread was really good. Couldn't pass up ordering lard. I guess I should have known but Bar Tartine is wine and beer only.

I thought that with all the hype that Bar Tartine would be overrate. Not so! The atmosphere is comfortable with an earthy almost rustic feel. The service was friendly, helpful and most of all, astute. The dishes were truly innovative, and looked and tasted much better than the menu descriptions would have you expect. Oddly enough, my only criticism was of dessert - we had "steamed carrot cake". I appreciated the new twist on a classic, but for my taste (and my companion's), it was a miss - lacking in both flavor and sweetness. Odd considering how renowned their bakery is. That said, I would go back to try more dishes and desserts and would recommend Bar Tartine to friends - both locals and out of towners.

All the food we ate was delicious. Many of the dishes revolve around fresh produce with delicious housemade sauces. Housemade kefir? This is something I have to learn! The pickled mushrooms had the perfect balance of flavors and texture and the kale was the best I've ever eaten. Really, I wish I lived closer so I could eat here more often. Or trying too hard. Of the four dishes we tried, only one was even close to what we hoped for. The combination of flavors was strange, portions small for the price and too many sprouts & seeds. Maybe we hit an off day? Even the desserts did not appeal. They bake their own bread which was lovely. Service was excellent.Wine list interesting. Really like the ambience. Yes, I appreciate the artistry and love of food that goes into this place. But $9 for 5 little potatoes? $15 for what amounts to an open faced avocado and egg sandwich? It's...just so insane. The kind of insane you can only get away with in a wealthy city full of people who don't cook for themselves. So. Tasty, but probably the poorest bang for buck of any restaurant in SF.

The food was unique and so tasty. I'm not sure why all the hype, though, with the bread. Seemed like just run of the mill bread to me, except that you had to pay for it. Oh, and also have to pay for butter or oil as well. We ordered bread and thought we would wait to order until that came until the waitress informed us that they won't bring you bread until you ordered. We found that a little irritating. The waitress suggested 2-3 dishes per person. We only ordered four for the two of us and it felt like way too much. The dishes are not small plates. Otherwise it was very good and we would recommend it to our friends.

The meal was exceptional and the service was mediocre. We were shocked that of the 4-5 people serving us, only 2 were friendly. 2 were quite gruff and the other one ignored us. It was never clear who our server was and we had to get up 2-3 times to ask for a menu, inquire on a main course, or request (and correct) the check. The staff, including one manager, seemed annoyed whenever we would ask for something, instead of apologetic. We loved the food and were impressed with the inventive flavors and creative combinations. I'd recommend returning, especially for the cardamom dessert but if I were ever treated like that again, I would never go back, no matter how good the food.
