A word from Bar Tartine
Known for dishes that evoke distant places and a cooking style that draws on slow, subtle, and labor-intensive techniques, Executive Chef Nicolaus Balla has a decidedly global culinary approach.

Balla employs his research into artisan techniques such as sausage preparation, cheese making, pickling and preserving to produce those authentic homemade flavors. His preference is for approachable and full-flavored dishes – what he calls “good social food.” The menu pairs naturally with Tartine’s bread by renown baker Chad Robertson, which serves both as inspiration and accompaniment for many of the dishes.

Diner Reviews
  • "These ingredients never tasted so good! Also, excellent choice of beers."

  • "How to describe this place and do it justice? The menu looks like you would not like the food. But I promise you it is all GREAT. It is unusual and so very delicious. The bread and sunflower oil sounds average, but the next day I still licked my chops at the taste. And the dumpling with nettles and peas sounds only okay but it was so good I licked the bowl. Somehow, it had a smoky flavor. The waitstaff is excellent, and all good looking. It is a hip, fabulous place!"

  • "I think it's what we chose, but every dish was green! But oh so good. Who knew there were so many flavors and textures of green food - I'm sure the other diners around us were green with envy! We had a lovely evening and the services was exceptional too"

  • "Food was delicious and well presented. Portions were good for 2 people to share (family style). Ambiance was great for catching up with a friend or a date, enough buzz to not feel too silent, but not crazy load and annoying to talk over."

  • "Nothing was bad but nothing mind blowing. Poor product knowledge with my server, but solid technical service."

  • "Sounds contradictory but the food has formidable flavors and yet it seems to be born from extraordinary imagination. I love this place. You can visit is in so many ways. Lunch and dinner are very different experiences. This was my first bunch. It would be best to come with at least four people. Our table was only three but we found ourselves curious about so many dishes that we nearly covered the table with extraordinarily delicious things. Wish I had those cabbage rolls right now as well as the little Hungarian cheese spread disc."

  • "Condescending service, a menu that is trying too hard, and just generally missed the mark. Too bad because it is well designed and had great date night ambience."

  • "Really had no fun at Bar Tartine. Wanted to like it but found very little to like on the menu which was challenging. Vegetarian tapas basically with somewhat shocking prices. Even the beer was a bad deal. Service was friendly and the room is nice but I felt robbed and left hungry. I will not return and don't recommend it. Tartine Bakery is A+ though."

  • "I've been meaning to try Bar Tartine for a long time, but never managed to make it. Plus, with all the changes in executive chefs, I wasn't sure what to expect. But, the food under Nick Balla and Cortney Burns is fantastic! Everything tasted great and had just the right amount of European flair. I found the service to be a little off - not enough trips around with water or fresh plates and silverware, but that wasn't too much of a problem. Dinner immediately launched Bar Tartine into my top 10 restaurants in SF."

  • "Celebrating our son's birthday, also a date night for him and his wife, we enjoyed their lengthy (3 hours) but extremely pleasurable and somewhat exotic Eastern European cuisine with wines, cava, appetizers, mains and desserts. Every dish was a treat, pistachio dip with lavage crackers, brined pickles, and lamb liver pate started the meal. Mains of kale (two orders), meatballs, croquettes and, of course, smoked potatoes, and two orders of the fish stew started to fill us up. But the carob mousse, kefir cake and candied citrus beckoned, so we all had dessert. Wonderful service, great recommendations for wines, and a warm milieu made for a very satisfying evening."

  • "overall I found the food to be on the bland side this time though in the past I have had a couple of dishes with a lot of flavor. This time we ordered the dumpling with mushroom, the spiced chicken, the potato flat bread, and the kale. The dumpling was very good. Probably just ordered the wrong things this time otherwise. Overall: Positives: restaurant uses very fresh ingredients and produce. Atmosphere is fun. Nice bar counter. negatives: wine list is not very good. not all dishes are that interesting."

  • "My husband and I went to Bar Tartine last weekend and found cordial, attentive service, and extraordinary food. The plates are small, and we had more than enough to eat with 2 plates each plus one dessert."

  • "Knowing that Bar Tartine was small plates made me a bit nervous, but the portions were pretty sizeable. My friend and I were expecting to spend more than we had, but we mainly got plates from the more "main course" section rather than getting one from each category as we just weren't so interested in paying $6 for sliced bread and butter...which I thought was strange, but appears to be more of a trend these days, not having complimentary bread that is. Otherwise, satisfied with the flavor and the portions. We would definitely go back again."

  • "Everything was well prepared, flavorful and original. Very good bread and nice attention to seasonal vegetables. We had the creamed beets and marinated Mushrooms. I highly recommend both. Also, a very good beet mimosa, which was pretty as well."

  • "Food was great. Service was terrible. Waited 10 min after reservation time even though 3 empty tables were available. Waitress kept disappearing. We never received one of the dishes we ordered and had to order it again. Table next to us reported having a similar experience and said they would probably not return."

  • "I haven't been to a restaurant with such fresh well-thought out dishes in a while. Each item had its own unique flavors, and was well-presented. The wait staff was professional and well trained. I would highly recommend this nice little jewel in the Mission."

  • "We found the menu of small plates wanting in execution. A lot of big flavors mushed together. The ultimate result is things tasted muddy. And there is something outrageous about a restaurant affiliated with a bakery charging $6 for bread and butter, although they were, admittedly, the best things we ate."

  • "I've been wanting to go to Bar Tartine for a long time, so used a friend's birthday as an excuse to book brunch. We got 5 dishes to share - open-faced kale, goat cheese, and egg large shared plate, bread assortment, rainbow trout in rice bowl, potatoes, and scrambled eggs with broccoli. The scrambled eggs was the most traditional and nondescript of the groupings. Also tried the beet mimosa, which was definitely "earthy" as they'd described it. Loved it all and would definitely go again."

  • "Perhaps the best way to define Bar Tartine is by selecting some of the written reviews: A Major Disappointment, What Happened?, Absolutely Terrible!!!, Just No Good, Mediocre food at best ... We ordered 7 different dishes and none were eatable! In summary, still a long way to be DISASTER!!! However, I could even make an effort and rank it only BAD in case I had never gone to any other restaurant in my life but, sorry, this is not the case!!!"

  • "Hands down, Bar Tartine is my favorite restaurant in SF. We go for our special occasions, when we want to show off the best parts of SF to our out-of-town guests, and for date night at the bar. Go, and order the smoked potatoes. They're bangin!"

  • "So much hype around Bar Tartine! I was very looking forward to our brunch, happy to have booked a table to avoid long queue.. too bad our waitress forgot about half of our order! She brings two plates, we wait for the bread.. finally it arrived when we are almost done.. and then she comes: "Is there anything else I can bring you today?" WELL... yes, our order! After another 25 minutes finally the two other main arrive.. Unacceptable!"

  • "We made this reservation a month in advance. We were really looking forward to this experience. The only good things were the atmosphere of the Restaurant and the bread. We had the Paprika chicken stew that came with skin and undercooked. The dessert was far from what you expect as dessert. They really need to taste their food combinations before placing on a menu. There is also a floor manager that has the audacity to come to your table when you go to the Restroom. She folds your napkin in front of your party, touching your napkin?! She did this twice without a word? We have traveled all over the world just for food. We have never experienced anything like this before. They are trying too hard to be different and it is not working."

  • "I have been a fan of all things Tatine from the beginning. Always a safe go to spot. Was shocked at the shift in the dinner menu last night. While the move toward eastern european/ hardcore hippy granola fair is bold and adventurous they failed misurably to balance flavors on multiple fronts. Lunch last week was phenomenal so I won't write them off this one star is only a message to the chef about the dinner menu. It's not easy pushing boundaries...I get it."

  • "Overall, I would recommend Bar Tartine to foodie friends. They took the brussel sprout dish off the menu which is very disappointing. Also, our server was a bit flighty."

  • "The evening didn't start very well. Reservation for a party of 6 had been made and confirmed in advanced and when we arrived, despite having some empty tables!, "ours" was not ready and we had to wait for 30 minutes. Complementary drinks were offered but it was definitely annoying and I think unnecessary. (It might have ruined a good mood) The food, however, was truly remarkable. All of us went with the fix menu that offers a great variety of flavors and an exceptional combination of styles that surprisingly work well together (Californian, Asian, Hungarian) We loved it. I did not click with the dessert, but the rest was a total experience. Kudos for the chef. Removing the fifth star only because of the unnecessary delay with the table."

  • "We could not believe that there is so much hype around this restaurant. The menu not only lacks any creativity but also does not list any food that you would want to eat. We ordered half the items on the menu, the food was bland, mushy, most easily described as baby food. The server had no personality and we had to ask for new plate and utensils after having eaten several courses. As for pricing, most of the food was not too expensive (considering you're paying to eat awful food). The only part that really bugged us was not just that they charged for bread as that's becoming increasingly more common, but that they also charged separately for the butter, which was not even interesting or flavorful."

  • "Each dish was creative without too much going on and with well balanced flavors and a good portion to share bites with 2-3 people. They were served pretty promptly. I thought the desserts were a bit too salty, which is unusual for me. The beer was excellent, and I was surprised with how good the wines offered by the glass were since I hadn't hear of any of the Eastern European grapes. And of course the bread is definitely the best in the city."

  • "What an awesome meal. Our waiter was so helpful helping us choose from the many delicious sounding items on the menu. We also got a great bottle of wine with the meal that was very reasonably priced."

  • "We really enjoyed all we ordered. We went for brunch. Noise level was normal and we liked that we could see the bakery. The bread is amazing. Best bread we've tasted. Paired with the cheese dip it was even better. I suggest the smoked potatoes. Those were to die for and we would have ordered more, but we decided to order the brisket open faced sandwich and the carrot curried soup. I liked the soup more than the sandwich, but it was all tasty. Also, the blood orange mimosas were refreshing. Service was on point."

  • "We first found Tartine before it served the Hungarian Menu. It was awesome. Then they switched over to expensive but tasty Hungarian food. Different but still good. Then we went back and they changed the menu a month ago. Not so good. They kept the high prices and made the plates smaller, like tapas style. The menu is very limited and portions are now smaller, but prices are still the same. Time to find a new gem in the hood."

  • "The yogurt was tangy and weird and was unlike anything I'd ever tasted before: exactly what I look for in a great restaurant. A tiny leaf of cilantro was unsettling, a great example of my entire experience at Bar Tartine. The smoked potatoes and pound cake were good but nothing spectacular, but the yogurt and a hazelnut dessert thing were incredible. Not just tasty (any restaurant can do that) but epiphanic -- I never knew food could taste like this."

  • "I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone dining in the Mission, and be prepared to order family style because the dishes are on the smaller side and you will definitely want to try a variation of plates. They change the menu pretty frequently (in fact, our menu was replaced with a reprint after we had already sat down), but always have a selection of bread, seafood, vegetable and meat dishes. Our meal came to $55 each, which included a nice bottle of wine – not too bad if you ask me!"

  • "I've been to this restaurant for brunch and loved it! Dinner not so much... The tasting menu really disappointment and was way over priced! Bread, more bread and yet more bread followed by sour cream and sour cream soaked, pickled non delectables dishes that were so sour and salty that you just couldn't finish em!. It's the first tasting menu I've ever ordered that I wished they would stop bringing out dishes to the table. When the waiter said, "just 2 more" we both cringed. Wont be racing back anytime soon or heading to the Baltic-Eastern Europe country's to tour their restaurants!"

  • "I made a reservation for two at 6:30 on a Tuesday night. We were there a little early and were seated right away. The waitress was helpful and we ordered four dishes to share (I'm vegetarian, and the options available to me were awesome). The dishes arrived in sequence, and all were delicious. I will say that they mentioned that certain dishes would deviate slightly from what was printed on the menu, but there was one dish that appeared to be completely different-- it was wonderful, just not what had been described on the menu. Overall, I enjoyed myself immensely and will certainly be back!"

  • "The food was just as wholesome as it was vibrant. The service, appreciative of their product, presented with respect, and patience. Warm, earthy vibe reminiscent of kinder times. Expect to share plates and voluntarily eat the bread, and kindly ask for more."
