A word from Bar Tartine
Known for dishes that evoke distant places and a cooking style that draws on slow, subtle, and labor-intensive techniques, Executive Chef Nicolaus Balla has a decidedly global culinary approach.

Balla employs his research into artisan techniques such as sausage preparation, cheese making, pickling and preserving to produce those authentic homemade flavors. His preference is for approachable and full-flavored dishes – what he calls “good social food.” The menu pairs naturally with Tartine’s bread by renown baker Chad Robertson, which serves both as inspiration and accompaniment for many of the dishes.

We really enjoyed Bar Tartine. We basically ordered everything that looked interesting on the menu to the four of us and managed to eat it all (barely)! Now we know what to order the next time we come, and there WILL be a next time! We enjoyed our experience very much. Bar menu was also an adventure.

Good for poeple who like to combine conventional dishes made in unconventional, way. as expected great food. potatoes with garlic, salad with cheese were great. Flatbread i wasnt too crazy about - a little heavy. wish i would try pork shoulder. combination of brussel sprouts and sauce were a bit overseasoned. Hungarian desert with homemade cheese was unconventional and balanced, refreshing and light - would i order again - no. smoked blood orange tea - again different - would i order again again - no.

We picked Bar Tartine on a recommendation. It was a girls night for 3 to celebrate a birthday. The wines by the glass were not very interesting - I couldn't find a white that I liked and ended up with a rose which wouldn't have been my choice as an evening wine. It also took about 15 mins for the wine to arrive, longer than I've waited at any other restaurant, ever. We picked 4-5 interesting sounding dishes but one friend pointed out that they all seemed to have similar ingredients and kind of tasted the same. I'd requested a candle on the dessert to celebrate the birthday but it was a no show. Ultimately and sadly quite a disappointing experience.

Always a delight- knowledgeable staff, and you'll want to savor each bite! Portions are great for sharing as well. Best place in town to taste fresh flavors and combinations from the alderwood smoked red potatoes with black garlic and mushroom vinegar sauce to pickled vegetables. The bread is the gold standard for how all bread should taste in my opinion.. The scrambled eggs are like nothing I've ever had-a texture that is difficult to reproduce I assure you.

The bread was wonderful. For bread-to-go, do some research to store & reheat the bread to bring back the potato-chip crispness of the crust and the softness of the bread. Other brunch items were magnificent & unique: Nettle broth. Texture & taste perfectly combined. Smoked trout as soft as lox. Potato firm & airy & full flavor. The portions were perfect to share and easily satisfying.

For taste, originality, and pleasant service this restaurant is hard to beat. It is well worth leaving the city centre and the tourist hot spots on the waterfront if the objective is gastronomic excitement and enjoyment. Sadly my wife and I live thousands of miles away and an early return is unlikely. If we lived nearby we would dine here often.

Bar Tartine is a special restaurant with unique food and great service. From unparalleled bread, to in-house fermentation, unmatchable flavors and unique combinations. Knowledgeable staff makes the slightly esoteric food approachable. Bar Tartine is always good but I was blown away this time. All familiar ingredients but taken to a place that made them all new again. The potatoes infused with smokiness, the salmon roe on bread with butter, the best salad I've ever had. And the service was flawless -- everything was brought in the exact right order -- and everyone was friendly and professional - they really knew the menu.

We went there for my husband's birthday. I knew it was highly rated and was hoping it wouldn't be too trendy and snobby. The food was great, but the staff was so warm that it made this place truly special. Everyone helped (not just our waiter), and our waiter's kindness was what made the evening all the more special. The food was unique, well priced and yummy. Great night!

Service - 2 stars -- I had to ask the waiter to come back and serve me coffee. The waiter did not come often to check on our food/drinks. We ordered coffee and the pound cake to start our brunch. The pound cake was really nothing, and it costed $9. I expected something better as I knew the dessert from the Tartine bakery was champ. That was really disappointing. We then ordered shared food (eggs and crackers with caviar). IT was OK-OK. Nothing breathtaking and overpriced. Kind of disappointing.

We arrived with high hopes which were not completely fulfilled. We started off with excellent appetizers (padron peppers and Jerusalem artichoke), followed by linguini with clams which unfortunately had a very(!) strong taste of garlic. For dessert we had cannelloni which was okey. The venue, however, was really nice and the waiters were polite. The cocktails were very tasty!

I've been to Bar Tartine many many times and the food is truly outstanding! It's hard to get inventive any tasty done right at the same time but you guys do so consistently. This last time, however, I was very disappointed by the service. I had brought a friend with me who I was introducing to the restaurant and the wait staff was border-line rude. The person who sat us was impatient; my friend asked for a new plate as his was chipped and the waitress in a very irritated tone explained that's the style of the plates (because they're recycled) and walked away. The wait staff barely checked in on us and I had to flag down our waitress and ask for a change in plates.

The food is amazing. It's a foodie dream. The service was perfect. Our server gave us recommendations that we didn't take but she seemed to know what she was talking about. We asked about the source for the meats and she had all of the answers. The only thing... the dessert was not good. It wasn't even a little sweet and it wasn't intentionally savory. We each had a bite and then didn't have any interest...and if you know my sister and me, you would know that we never turn away dessert.

Our first visit was so poor we won't be back for the overpriced blah experimental dishes. We would usually give a restaurant a second chance if the service was at least friendly and attentive. Our server was speedy and anxious at the beginning, and then disappeared completely the second half of our meal, never checking in. Not to even check if our food was okay. We had to flag other servers to get order things and to ask about our starters after our dinners were served,etc,etc...

Thanks for ruining my streak of not having a bad meal in SF. When I asked the server what happened to the burger he said they haven't had the burger in 6 mo since it was a staple of the old chef in a pretty snarky "omg how could you not know that" way. After dinner I told him maybe they should get the old chef back.

Of my many trips to Bar Tartine, I have to say this was one of the most interesting, adventurous and delicious yet.The subtle blends of flavors and essences in each of the dishes piqued curiosity and delight with every course. Visual presentations have hit a new high, and I don't know how they do it, but about half way through every meal I have at Bar Tartine, I can literally feel the vitality of the food in my skin. Do not miss the desserts, especially if you are not a dessert person! They do it in a whole different way here, and you'll be glad you broke the rules- just like they do!

Great food and really thought through menu, for a city with great food pretensions Tartine does deliver interesting and fresh food that is well presented and healthful in both combinations and portions. One minor gripe charging for bread and butter separately is taking the mickey. Eschew the butter and get the lard, amazing!

We arrived when the restaurant opened at 6pm and opted to order a few items to share as they recommended. The beef tartare on potato flatbread with green horseradish was so drowned in horseradish sauce we couldn't taste or barely see the beef tartare below. When we told our server about it, he spoke to the kitchen then told us that if people aren't read for the kick of horseradish, they can be taken aback. We clarified again that that wasn't our problem, it was that we couldn't taste anything underneath the over abundance of sauce. The remainder of the dishes were edible but nothing great. The meal felt very rushed as we were out of there having paid the bill before 7pm. I wouldn't go back.

Food was very good and creative. Some over the top delicious, however the staff mostly put food on plate and walked through their "description" with as much enthusiasm as if they were reading a car mechanics "how-to". By the end, we just ignored them and referred to the menu. Also, wine paring did not quite synch up, so that was not good. Still would go back as food was terrific.

Everything was good, just a few details missed. Tasting menu portions were way to large, half way through the tasting we were both very full and so didn't enjoy the last half. Desserts were extremely tart, almost no sweetness at all. Savory desserts in general are great, but, for example, you expect some sweetness from caramel. Wine pairings were good, served to groups of dishes. For the most part servers hardly mentioned the name when leaving them, let alone region, etc. A bit odd to have 2 wines served at the same time (red and white) that were very different and it wasn't mentioned which went with which dish.
